We've been discussing all week how to approach this UEFA Champions League match and, you know what, we've decided to go to the Spotify Camp Nou and try and play our game. We know we're a good team, we know our style of play brings the best out of our players, so let's go and test ourselves against one of the best club teams in Europe. If Barcelona get away from us early then we may have to make changes but let's see how we get on.

Unfortunately we have quite a few injuries to important players so we won't be anywhere close to full strength.

Barcelona (Spain) v Viking (Norway)

UEFA Champions League

--

05_Barcelona_05.png.70a4e2ebbd7cf77ca549393ca6054f61.png

We decided to go a bit more defensively solid so Isak Amundsen moved out to right-back, Aleksander Liland came in at centre-back for his Viking debut, and Brice Wembangomo went to the bench.

Wow! Just, wow!

You go into a match like this knowing Barcelona are a very good team but it's not until you see them close-up, in their own Spotify Camp Nou back yard that you realise just how good they are. What really impressed me was how hard they worked out of possession to get the ball back.

Barcelona were all over us from the start and had already hit the post before they scored their first goal after only 13 minutes. They would go on to hit the woodwork three times in total as well as having a goal disallowed.

We  went more Cautious after that.

05_Barcelona_12_11mins.png.73628280269e596e25a01e7b20604d4e.png

2-0 down at the break, we made a couple of substitutions and made a few changes to try and get some attacking momentum.

05_Barcelona_12_HT.png.d1219c1af374ec394837119dad7cc794.png

Once it was clear the match had gone, I sent as many of our young players on as I could so that they could experience playing against Barcelona in the Spotify Camp Nou.

Oh, I know . I have to play them at least twice a year and it's always like that. They just overwhelm you.

There's no shame in it, and you were always up against it with that injury list. Better luck next time :)

Viking Announce Hartveit Ryste Signing

--

IN_Ryste_press_01.png.9b3fb804ac599906826a6ed415b994a7.png

IN_Ryste_00.thumb.png.245a78433b440cedb25e52e4c9480184.png

I'm delighted to finally sign Anders Hartveit Ryste as he's a player we've been tracking for a considerable time.

IN_Ryste_04.thumb.png.7a909b2af90d54bba1774bd563473d84.png

Spoiler

IN_Ryste_05_spoiler.thumb.png.66a73bbc20a9cb7fe54c6e7b2ca190d8.png

This deal has been an ongoing saga if I'm honest with you and, at times, we thought Anders Hartveit Ryste would never become a Viking player.

We first made an offer for him two years ago and Odd wanted far more than his market value. We continued to make offers every transfer window since then and each time the fee Odd wanted was more than we were willing to pay. We didn't get much encouragement from the players' agent either as he kept saying Anders wasn't interested in joining us.

Then earlier this month, when we were trying to get some of our younger players out on loan, we got feedback that Odds were interested in loaning one of our players but needed to generate some income before they could make a bid.

So we went back to Odd and made an offer, a reasonable offer I'd say, and our bid was accepted.

IN_Ryste_03.png.d7ca9f0176858b22f818c77d24bd8787.png

We offered Anders a contract but the vibes we were getting from both the player and his agent, even at this advanced stage of negotiations, was less than encouraging.

BID_ACCEPT_Ryste_01.png.2d5437a234a250af412e8fc3058a9870.png

But Anders did sign and we're delighted to finally have him as part of the Viking squad.

IN_Ryste_press_02.png.654e7f5b101d061db32ff76da1038482.png

Anders will go straight into the first team squad and, after that, we'll see. We now have four, if not five very good strikers here.

IN_Ryste_press_03.png.74184624b3ab5047b81a54e0440e6e7e.png

Anders has been capped by Norway at U21 level and, since the World Cup, has been part of Antonio Conte's senior Norway squad although Anders has still to make his senior debut for Norway. Hopefully we can help him get that first Norway cap and many more.

IN_Ryste_press_04.png.d0b04d5e8c97b0b2f4298d064ad74e8d.png

I'm sure Anders will settle just fine.

IN_Ryste_press_05.png.ae1ef993bf7fec24f8b4bf553cb2506d.png

We're looking to sign good, young Norwegian players who can contribute to the first team straight away and develop into even better players in the future.

We've already guaranteed ourselves a UEFA Champions League Playoff spot, which is great but if we can win against Napoli at home in our SR-Bank Arena, which will be a difficult ask, we could qualify automatically for the knockout stage depending on other results.

But we have to win first... and then cross our fingers.

We still have a few injury and fitness issues to deal with.

This Viking team, and this group of players, keep finding new ways to surprise me.

We've qualified for the Round of 16 Knockout Phase of the UEFA Champions League, avoiding the Playoffs.

Two penalties were enough - Lasse Nordås in the first-half and new signing Anders Hartveit Ryste in the second after coming on as a substitute to make his debut.

Oh and a big thank you to PAOK Salonika for their late equaliser at 3-3 to deny Sevilla.

So it WAS the right decision to stay and win the championship :) Congratulations!

Thank you, @Carambau

Although, to be fair, it wasn’t a case of deciding to stay, as such, because my previous contract ran until the end of this season (2031).

The question was more a case of whether to extend it early and how long for? I did agree to extend and am now under contract with Viking until the end of the 2034 season.

Hartveit Ryste - Let's see how this one plays out...

--

coaching_Ryste_01.thumb.png.fad74e8bb5bd231939c289b55e62caa3.png

Our new signing Anders Hartveit Ryste is expecting an improvement in the club's coaching team.

coaching_Ryste_02.thumb.png.97f90654486ecd37690bb9270332ed62.png

And it seems I've promised to do that...

coaching_Ryste_03.thumb.png.7737fc372a7298fa5b63170e229406d6.png

... although I'm not sure how, or when, I promised that because I excluded it from contract negotiations but, what I did do when asking his agent about whether Hartveit Ryste would be interested in joining Viking, I did say his expectations (which included improve the coaching staff) were acceptable (see quoted post below)... so maybe that's what triggered the promise, not the actual contract negotiations.

The problem is though that, with the exception of goalkeeper coaches (which doesn't directly affect Hartveit Ryste as he's a striker), our first team coaching is the Highest in Eliteserien so I don't see the point of tying to improve it, particularly as I like to remain loyal to my backroom staff.

coaching.thumb.png.eaa5db10687160f30b796bb311dbba08.png

I guess I'm just going to have to wait and see how this one plays out...

This was a good run out for us in difficult, snowy conditions in Iceland.

We scored four goals, had two goals ruled out for offside, and Jakob Napoleon Romsaas hit the post from a free-kick.

We lost El Hadji Malick Diouf early with a tight thigh but we don't think it's too serious.

We lost Jakob Napoleon Romsaas to injury in training this week but, otherwise, we have a clean bill of health and it's great to have David Møller Wolfe back after his illness.

I'm delighted to have finished this series of three away matches in Iceland with a third victory.

The win today against Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar was very pleasing as we weren't anywhere near full strength for this friendly.

Last episode (see below) I updated that we'd loaned eight players out and had reached our limit for eight players out on loan.

Since then, Brage Kvithyld has also gone out on loan to Eliteserien Sandnes Ulf which takes us up to nine players out on loan.

Oscar Bobb (ill) and Jakob Napoleon Romsaas (calf) will be big misses for us away against Sevilla but, hopefully, we'll have them both back for the second leg at our SR-Bank Arena.

Our job at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán is to make sure we're still in the tie when Sevilla come to Stavanger.

I'm so proud of the Viking players today, I can't put into words just how proud I am... but we have to remember the job's not done and we still have to finish the job back in Stavanger in front of our own fans in the SR-Bank Arena.

We had to weather an early storm from Sevilla, as we expected, but what I didn't expect was that we'd score from our very first attack, a lovely team passing move ended with Anders Hartveit Ryste putting a low ball into the penalty area and Runar Norheim arrived late in the box to bury it.

That incensed Sevilla and they put us under more pressure but we defended magnificently.

01_Sevilla_10b.png.7cc2a9b46fe69a2dd9e51e5bcc7d0420.png

Yeah, absolutely outstanding, Anders Hartveit Ryste's screamer from 25-yards, that rocketed into the roof of the net, gave us all a lift, gave the the players belief, and they really settled into the game after that.

01_Sevilla_12_Ryste.png.b33da903be292a7b5095644849487590.png

Sevilla pulled a goal back on 36 minutes but we got to half-time with a 2-1 lead.

We encouraged the players during the break, made a couple of changes because Isak Amundsen was on a yellow card and Martin Palumbo looked exhausted.

We ummed and aaahed about sending Steinar Braathen on because of his inexperience but I'm glad we did because his energy was infectious and he produced late in the second-half, first with the assist for Edvin Austbø and then Steinar rounded things off by scoring our fourth goal.

We've put ourselves in a great position after winning 4-1 away at Sevilla but we still have a lot of hard work to do in the SR-Bank Arena as we saw first-hand in the first leg just how good a team Sevilla are.

To be honest, whilst I thought we did deserve to win, the score line flattered us a bit.

02_Sevilla_02b.png.60272c04ee601a588c1483b8a57d16b0.png

Just over 15,000 Viking supporters in a SR-Bank Arena attendance of 15,339 and I'm thrilled we were able to put on a show and get the job done in front of our de mørkeblå fans.

We stressed the importance of not conceding early but, in my wildest dreams, I never imagined we'd be 3-0 up after quarter of an hour.

And we could've scored more as David Møller Wolfe rattled the post from distance midway through the second half.

Our captain David Brekalo was one yellow card away from a suspension so we told him to ease off tackles at 3-0 and we substituted him at half-time.

02_Sevilla_10b.thumb.png.6bceeb64cd718111e7b3f657cd16b081.png

We did concede two goals in the last 10+ minutes with a relatively inexperienced back-four on by then but, to be fair, Sergio Aribas's strike for Sevilla's first goal was an absolute world class goal.

Our young defenders will have learnt a lot from being on the pitch against players like Aribas and the rest of the Sevilla team.

Apart from a few match fitness issues we have a healthy squad.

Today's friendly is mainly for the players who didn't feature much against Sevilla.

I also want to take a look at two young players, Per Andreas Haughom and...

I thought today was a good work out. We did enough to have won the game I thought but, with the team we put out, I'm very happy with the performance and satisfied with the draw.

Both Per Andreas Haughom and Per Andreas Haugerud Hagen did well and I was delighted for 15 year old Per Andreas Haugerud Hagen to get the assist for our goal and be named Player of the Match.

The only real negative was we had to substitute Johan Bakke at half-time with a stubbed toe but he should be ok in a few days.

Note: These are two names / players I'm going to keep getting mixed up: Per Andreas Haughom and Per Andreas Haugerud Hagen:lol:

Thank you, @Hootieleece. I couldn’t quite believe how comfortable it was in the end.

Count that sweet UEFA Money!

I know. £8.23M. Our bank balance is now over £31M and Viking are now showing as “Rich”.

I’ve put in a request to the Board to increase the percentage of transfer money received that is made available.

🤞

Vidar (OBOS-ligaen) v Viking (Eliteserien)

We don't have any injury worries as such, but we do still have quite a few players working their way back to full fitness.

For this friendly though, against our affiliate club Vidar who were promoted to OBOS-ligaen last season, we're going to go with a young starting 11 and see how they get on.

For saying we went with a very young starting 11 I'm thrilled with the performance and result against Vidar.

Per Andreas Haugerud Hagen had played for the U19s recently; understandably, he got tired and didn't last the first half.

After an hour, we brought on some of the senior players who are lacking match fitness.

Aalesund (OBOS-ligaen) v Viking (Eliteserien)

We have no injury problems but we do have quite a few players lacking match fitness so, for this friendly against Aalesund, we'll be focussing on fitness.

As our opening Eliteserien fixture at home to Åsane has been pushed back until after the UEFA Champions League Quarter Final first leg, we're trying to arrange one more friendly ahead of the Arsenal tie.

For saying this match against Aalesund was about match fitness, I'm delighted with the performance and the result.

Unfortunately we lost two midfielders to injury though.

Steinar Braathen did his ankle and three minutes later his replacement, Johan Bakke, strained his hamstring.

Alta (Tier 4) v Viking (Eliteserien)

Friendly

We go into our final friendly away at Alta with our 2031 Eliteserien campaign due to start soon.

01_Alta_02.png.b5ad10514b98bc1d8e15225a373bb224.png

Before then, we go to Arsenal in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarter Final before kicking off our Eliteserien campaign at home to Åsane the following Saturday.

01_Alta_03_int-duty.png.c248094839addb793bacfd40106d7a9a.png

We'll be without four players who are away on International duty.

01_Alta_03_injury.thumb.png.69b9edcd3dac3de9c088ad2b39760c84.png

We're also missing Steinar Braathen and Johan Bakke who both picked up injuries last time out against Aalesund.

We were very good in the first half and deservedly led 4-0 at half-time.

After the break, we got a bit sloppy and conceded two avoidable goals.

We had chances to score more ourselves, and Edvin Austbø hit the cross bar.

Unfortunately we lost Martin Palumbo with a groin strain and we now have three central midfielders out injured.
