Tonbridge Angels F.C.

Tonbridge Angels Football Club is a professional football club based in Tonbridge, Kent, England. The club was founded as Tonbridge Football Club in 1947 and became known as "The Angels" in 1949 when they started playing at the Angel Ground. Since 1980, they have played home matches at the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium. As of the 2021–22 season, the club competes in the National League South, at the sixth tier of the English football league system.

The club reached what was then the Conference South in 2011, after winning the play-off final of the 2010–11 Isthmian League Premier Division. They were relegated back to the Isthmian League in 2014, but were promoted back to the National League South in 2019 after winning one of the "Step 3 Super Play-Offs" at the end of the 2018–19 season.

Notable ex-players include England international Malcolm Macdonald, Aston Villa's league championship winning manager Ron Saunders, and one of our most successful England managers, Roy Hodgson ;)

Longmead Stadium

The club plays their home games at Longmead Stadium, Darenth Avenue, Tonbridge TN10 3JF. The stadium has a capacity of 3,000 people. Covered terraces are in place behind each goal, which were named after the Mezzanine Floor Company who helped build them.

In 2008 the North Stand was renamed The Jack Maddams Stand in memory of the young player who died that year. In the same year, the club installed over 760 seats in the West Stand which was brought over from the old Angel Ground when the club first moved to the Longmead.

On 2 May 2022 the Angels played their last game on grass at Longmead. For the start of the 2022–23 season a new professional 3G pitch was laid, together with other ground works and new floodlights.

The new FIFA standard 3G pitch was formally opened before the Angels' first league game at Longmead Stadium on 20 August 2022.

The Manager

Like a typical Singaporean, Jansen Pang studied hard his whole life and got a degree before getting a job in the government sector. However, deep down, his passion lies in football and his experience in operations management landed him his first job in football. Jansen was operations manager at local club, Lion City Sailors, while pursuing qualifications to become a football coach. He moved away from the operations role and started coaching the U13s and U17s, before bagging the Continental A Licence in 2023.

Jansen dreams of managing at the highest level every night and began looking for job opportunities in the lower tiers of English football. An opportunity came up before the start of the 2023/2024 season when Tonbridge Angels F.C.'s manager Jay Saunders left the club by mutual consent following disagreement with the board over the club's long-term goals. Jansen applied to fill the vacancy and managed to impress Sophie Purves during the interview with his meticulousness and footballing philosophy. And this is how the story begins..

Thanks mate! I've been wanting to do a one-club save for quite some time and this year feels right! Looking forward to building the club from the bottom and bringing the Angels back to where they belong! :D

Squad Planner

We have finally gotten down to use the squad planner this year and there are two obvious weak spots in the squad. We have neither strikers nor left-footed central midfielders at the club. Strengthening these positions will be at the top of Jansen's priority when he plans his transfer businesses with 0 transfer budget. The depth in our defence also needs addressing and we will get there after filling the problematic positions.

Key Players

2cfc3266da955829f491b8f996af4e8f.jpg

The strongest area of our squad is in the wide areas and Ruben Soares Junior is one of the best players to watch on the ball in this league. The Portuguese will start down our right flank in the Robben / Salah Inside Forward role.

af03ffa213005560514b078c6fda0b82.jpg

On the opposite flank, Gianni Crichlow is an equally capable, if not quicker inverted wide player than his colleague. The ex-QPR academy graduate can also cross the ball much better than Ruben and he has been handed the no. 11 shirt to start in the Inverted Winger role \o/

13478a8e39af347af627a5fb7703e514.jpg

There is no one stronger aerially than Tommie Fagg at the club and he plays in central midfield. The Englishman is however a hot head and if he can avoid getting unnecessary reds in games, he could be a dark horse for our player of the season award.

I love the Angels' new badge, so cool. Seems you have inherited a mess of a team. Rebuilding should be a challenge! Good luck DB!

Fu3siiFX0AArGSI.jpg

The badge revamp was such an upgrade! To be honest, that was one of the key reasons which drew me to start a save with the Angels!

Yes, we have not even played a league game! We are spending so much time trialling a long list of players to identify the right ones with our limited wage budget :(

One of very few clubs who have nailed a modern logo to perfection. I didn’t know Scott Wagstaff was playing for Tonbridge these days. That’s some real experience and quality in your midfield with him. Best of luck!

That new badge is simple yet awesome at the same time.  Well done, Tonbridge Angels!

Cheers lads! All clubs looking to revamp their logos should use Angels’ designer!

Scott is fantastic technically but he is really slow! He’s still with us but we are exploring offloading him! Still more than 50% on keeping him though! ;)

Key Signings

d3acd9e49ec39dcb1793a3b1bc3ed5c8.jpg

Filling the left-sided no. 8 spot was one of our key priorities and thankfully, Byron Lawrence was available on a free and agreed to come in on a non-contract deal. The Englishman is well rounded and has no real weakness in his game at this level. He will go straight into our starting eleven as our Box To Box Midfielder \o/

7d887cd66cf66a8dee24199381c48895.jpg

As mentioned earlier, there are no strikers in the squad which Jansen inherited and we wasted little time to bring in Victor Sodeinde on another non-contract deal. The quick striker is one of the most determined players in the league and he will get most of his game time coming off the bench for..

6506f7a43fb924eb0c8778ba6723c6ac.jpg

..Tyrese Briscoe in the lone Pressing Forward role. The Millwall academy graduate has great pace and work rate for this level and suits our no. 9 spot to a tee. The no. of goals he can get will go a long way in any success we may have in the upcoming season!

New Beginnings

9adb05b2d1187b293290a6096bd439a1.jpg

We couldn't have wished for a better start!

6aba790ccd33a23d07ea73a1ce181b81.png

To our pleasant surprise, the boys managed to win our opening four games with our new recruits settling well into life at the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium. The fixtures pileup is an issue though as we still have 2 games to go in a very busy August. Jansen will continue to rotate his squad heavily to avoid unnecessary injuries due to wear and tear.

Star Performer

The signing which ate away most of our wage budget began repaying our faith early, scoring 2 and creating a further 2 in the opening fixtures. As the spearhead of our team, it is not surprising to see the team's results mirror his level of performances and we are expecting big things from the boy for the rest of the campaign \o/

First Ten

235cbeb0070f4c6e8beae1ba3050bd2f.jpg

We managed to hang on to top spot after the first ten, but our nearest rivals (Braintree) has one on us as they managed a point at our home ground. With only the top spot guaranteed promotion, we gotta be near to faultless from now till the end of campaign.

7b1a6d75a79891be29ad23bdbb6f48b7.png

After winning our opening four, the Angels were brought back down to reality after drawing 3 of our last 6. The home draw against Braintree meant we need to get a least a point in our away trip to the title contenders :(

Star Performer

Our Mezzala and main set-piece threat has overtaken Tyrese in the race for our player of the season thus far! The gigantic midfielder scored 5 in just 7 starts and managed to create a further two from the no. 8 position. Long may it continue! \o/

I've had a soft spot for Braintree as they were the first club I managed back when this game was called Worldwide Soccer Manager in Canada.

Hope you do well in the season (and Braintree make the playoffs!!)

Good start.  Annoying when the tricky fixtures come on the Tuesday after a Saturday match, but I guess it was true from Braintree as well.

With that goal difference of 23 I should think you'll start pulling away before long though...unless the other sides start to tighten up and you can't break them down.

There are so many mid-week games that I have to rotate the squad really heavily! I play an entirely rotated 11 in the mid-week games and their energy has gotten us through those tightgames! Thanks for the faith and I certainly hope that we can pull away somehow :D

End of November Update

085f520811e2bd6fe3582153579ac8ee.jpg

The Angels continue to stay among the clouds at the end of November, sitting top on 50 points, 6 points ahead of our nearest rivals in Worthing \o/

Vanarama National League South

28b11b89d80414d122d75c7c543d4b55.png

Jansen's boys were excellent in the league, winning all but 2 of the 10 fixtures in October and November. We picked up two good away points at decent outfits too. Things couldn't be better but we aren't getting complacent as we have not had that inevitable season slump yet!

FA Cup

69ee6b95b41fe20f795c447514adc058.png

The lads continued to progress in the FA Cup too, and we are now in the second round proper where League two outfit Stockport County awaits us at home. We are all hoping that their fans can help to fill our stadium in the upcoming cup tie :brock:

FA Trophy

5758f2f4cf7e0890bf07e6f2b481b4ed.png

The boys also began their journey in the FA Trophy, where we managed to progress to the third round after a 3-0 away win at Chichester. It's not going to be easy the next round though as we face a Vanarama National League side in Maidenhead.

Star Performer

882dd7a7ea85edd16e56775980360964.jpg

Another candidate for our Player of the Season emerged in the last two months as Ruben Soares Junior managed 12 goal contributions in just 14 starts thus far. He is such a goal threat cutting in from the right on his left foot, slotting 9 past the oppositions' keepers before the mid-season mark. However, his good form is beginning to attract interest from teams in the division above and we have offered him a new deal which he took. Fingers-crossed that he stays with us for the rest of the season!

Pleasant Start

3eb1cdb4882b08f20a8000aefc56f0ab.jpg

The good form continues at the Angels!

Vanarama National League South

b3025280b8ea2e7dcc187605fdf24280.jpg

The squad has begun life so well under Jansen and we have managed to keep up our solid form, pulling away from our nearest challengers at the top with 70 points. The only way is downhill from here and we are hoping that we can stay top at the end of the excellent campaign thus far.

e10a8c7703955880d83864c9d11b730e.png

The boys were excellent in the eight league fixtures, winning all but 2 hard-fought away draws at Torquay and Maidstone. While it is still early days, we can't help but begin to dream of promotion after just 28 league games!

FA Cup

23fd2b23fed4ae17aa306ff09b7992ad.png

We were sent crashing out in the FA Cup though, and our second stringers lost convincingly at home to League Two outfit Stockport in the Second Round. It was perhaps more disappointing that we did not bag more cash from the good cup run we had this season :(

FA Trophy

81cada1646704c898ceab4e3604cee44.png

Despite the FA Cup disappointment, we are still alive in our second cup competition! A tough side from the league above (Southend) awaits us in the Fourth Round and the boys will need to be at their best if we want to progress further in the competition.

Star Performer

6a6ee5737ad918a58d201c0c34ddda10.jpg

Our number 9 continues to excel in the lone pressing forward role up top as he bagged 6 goals since our last update. Tyrese Briscoe does not have the best goal-scoring record but he is so vital for our system as he sets the pace for our pressing game. The speedster also has the ability to create openings for his team-mates and Jansen has no doubt that he will continue to be crucial in our bid for promotion this campaign \o/

Consistency

The boys have managed to keep going and we are now 17 clear entering our last dozen of league games..

0a0b383b824c6f9c449b0eff82265136.png

We managed to stay unbeaten at the 34th game mark, winning 4 and drawing 2 since our last update, scoring 12 and conceding 3 in our consistent run of form \o/

Longest Penalty Shootout

fdd2f364aa971a0c062ba3855d100316.jpg

We also had the longest ever penalty shootout in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup Trophy, winning 10-9 against higher league opposition in Southend after fighting out a goal-less draw. The second string progresses on in the cup!

Star Performer

786a761c9319ee92ba77d8484c3f9da1.jpg

Our 196 cm tall Mezzala continues to impress, reaching the ten goal mark after just 24 starts in his bid to be Jansen's 1st ever player of the season. Long may it continue!

Season Review 2023/24

We're going up say we're going up!

Vanarama National League South

2a01f7cb2d05a726b2ae634927f48a8a.png

The boys brought it home after maintaining their consistent form throughout the year, finishing top on 115 points ahead of Worthing and Yeovil. Jansen has done it at the first time of asking! Vanarama National League here we come! \o/

FA Cup

e0d6f96ec3111962fdf031351ccf7398.png

It was a credible FA Cup run all the way till the Second Round proper, where we were knocked out by Stockport County who were playing two tiers above us. The major disappointment was that we did not manage any windfall despite a decent cup run :(

FA Trophy

21883da65e7243848f0db331096e2e2a.png

The second string also did very well in the FA Trophy, progressing all the way to the semis where we were eventually halted by a side in the league above in a narrow 0-1 defeat :(

Goal of the Season

1e5e9d51a773c09c6e75affa00257a48.gif

Our goal of the year was a precise free-kick by our best free-kick taker in Dan Sparkes. Love the bend!

The Finances

May we get richer day by day! :D

11 of the Year

1168c50f3295e71453ed137126052043.png

Our promotion-winning starting 11 \o/ As you can see, we rotated the squad heavily due to the crazy fixtures' congestion in the league.

Player of the Season

3a361ea97c1a268b2f5396d38e4bd485.jpg

Our number 9 is Jansen's pick for our player of the season! While Tyrese Briscoe is not a prolific goal-scorer, the speedy attacker had 28 goal contributions in 31 starts and had been setting the rhythm for our pressing game right from the top throughout the season. However, with his deal expiring at the end of this campaign and him asking for more than double his current wages, I don't think we will be able to keep him with our small budget :(

First Key Signing

72daeaec8c635a69d206cc7ff0b0681e.jpg

It's gonna be a busy summer building for the league above and things started off in a positive manner. Damon Park came in on a free after Fulham chose not to renew his contract and their loss is certainly our gain. The young center-back is already one of the best tacklers and aerial threats in the league and at only 18 years young, we cannot wait to see how he grows his game with us in the upcoming campaign \o/

More Key Signings

56f897688200957f76c36c7c2d7e5ec2.jpg

We brought in the non-league James Ward-Prowse this summer and an increase in no. of set-piece goals will surely accompany this key signing! In addition to his set-piece prowess, Giorgio Rasulo is a terrific leader on and off the pitch, and Jansen has already made the Mezzala our club captain right from the start. Many will bet on him to be our player of the season come the end of the campaign, and Jansen certainly doesn't disagree!

3153c3de73d9058b369a6c191428ab38.jpg

Noah Watson arrives at the Angels following Crystal Palace's decision to release him and we are delighted to add a player of his quality and physicality in the squad. While he starts the season as our 1st choice left-back, the Englishman's versatility meant he will fill in at center-back during times of need as well. What a player we have on our hands!

953c98fc0ad3875d46849326674fb5ed.jpg

We have a new no. 7 after Ruben Soares Junior chose to return home to Portuguese side Académica, and he is another academy graduate from Crystal Palace! David Omilabu is left-footed and is perfect for the right wing inside forward role in our system. As we struggled to find a no. 9 who is good enough to excel at this level, we will be depending heavily on David's goal output from the right this year :(

The Most Competitive League

4c88be1271794e2531cfc75b21fc2532.jpg

Jansen cannot believe how competitive the Vanarama National League is so far! Yeovil (in 11th place) is just 7 points behind the leaders at this point and it is impossible to predict how the season will go at this point..

e7649d0605fb63ce2cff26ef6cb73e53.png

We have moved up and down the table so much that we were just in twelve place not long ago (after the 15th league fixture). While this update came at the right time when our form is currently on an upward trajectory, we would be happy with a play-off spot at the end of the season after seeing how inconsistent our form has been thus far.

FA Cup

da0460df89d5d7346eee6e80e811daaf.png

We are also out of the FA Cup after losing to League One side Preston in the First Round proper. We managed to get a windfall though! ;)

Player of the Update

e19867531d2b3ff587cd1c82669f5da2.jpg

Our player of the season thus far is our JWP, our set-piece taker, and our club captain! Playing in the right-sided no. 8 position, Giorgio Rasulo managed 10 goal contributions (4 goals and 6 assists) in 16 starts and is absolutely key in our attacking transitions when attempting to unlock oppositions' defences. Jansen is hoping that he can continue to lead by example and keep the Angels high up the table \o/

Vanarama National League

736002a6a9d8bd6963457febb0f1ba96.png

We are going up again! It has been such a tough season with teams beating each other left right and center (we have lost 11 ourselves), but the boys came through in the end. Jansen's transfer strategy of bringing in Prem rejects and giving them a platform to show their best paid off handsomely in our second consecutive promotion-winning campaign! :D

FA Cup

82be1b32d376373f945693a8db3aa817.png

We were knocked out early in the FA Cup though, with our second string going down to a side two tiers above in a 1-2 home defeat.

FA Trophy

17fe34eaebf2a5216ecdd9cd2b4342c1.png

The boys bagged our second trophy of the season, winning the FA Trophy after coming through three penalty shootouts in six rounds of cup football. What a year we have had \o/

The Finances

73e63583285a81db5edce1f316ef4f33.png

It's great to see green arrows everywhere and we will need to continue to progress the club financially if we wanna climb further up the English football ladder.

How You Lined Up

33e7c5c2c11a6eacc10a6770f0d46e10.png

The heroes who got us up again! Byron Lawrence was the only player who was with us when we got promoted from the Vanarama South. This shows what a great job the gaffer has done to ensure that the new recruits gel together within a limited period of time to bag us enough points for the league title. We are going up say we're going up!!

Player of the Season

0d40d731173ffaa433884de540c4c257.jpg

Our right winger who had 20 goal contributions in just 30 starts is without a shadow of a doubt our Player of the Year! David Omilabu's pace cutting in from the right on his favoured left foot has been a signature of Jansen's system and his goals and assists have been crucial in our promotion winning season. We are thankful to have him tied down for another year and we are hoping that he can make the step up to league football in the next campaign!

Key Signings for League Two

243f7b35960243cb550ffdbb27961650.jpg

Kenny Coker was our top target last summer but he eventually chose Yeovil despite them playing in the league below. He got Yeovil up to the Vanarama National League while we got ourselves promoted to League Two. To Jansen's surprise, the hardworking forward was made available for loan this summer and we snapped him up immediately. His drive, work rate and fitness is perfect for our lone Pressing Forward role up top and he will compete with..

d23bdceec30ddba86613e28a27045533.jpg

..Jovon Makama for playing time. Jo was in League Two last season and managed 5 goals in just 9 starts. We are hoping that he can bring that crucial experience and bag the much needed goals for us in League football.

784a754b331fc5ec15e157041dfd2dc7.jpg

We dug deep in the loan market and spotted a gem in Kian Le Fondre, who is perfect for the Inverted Winger role down our left flank. The Englishman is a good crosser and has decent pace for this level, and Jansen gave him the no. 11 shirt without hesitation. We have high hopes that he can create loads for our first two key signings in the upcoming campaign!
