The Brief

Our first season as defending 1.Bundesliga champions and the board brief was to Finish in the Champions League Qualification Spots this season in the league, building on our title-winning season. In the DfB Pokal, the board want us to make the Quarter Finals. Finally, the board want us to make the Group Stage of the UEFA Champions League. Our budgets were £4.7m in the wages and £160m transfer budget.

The Results

image.thumb.png.d63f78ee5e96904760387cfc9ad15d71.png

The 1-1 draw with Gladbach was frustrating as we battered them, but conceded from their only shot on goal.

Getting there slowly but surely though! Remember how far you’ve come 🤣

Definitely.

It’s very interesting now as we have a bit of a Man Utd situation in that a lot of our players are reaching their prime/hitting their 30’s and, whilst they’re still performing at a high level, I don’t know if the youth players can match up.

I think I might have to do a post on it for the end of the season

A generational gap.

Well done on the title but that was a horrible finish lol.

Dortmund well down :(

It was, but we played the backups and youth for the last 4 games

Dortmund haven't been relevant for a while now. Leipzig have been the real force here recently

Oh ok fair enough, nice to have the title wrapped up and not really a surprise with Dortmund, especially an AI managed Dortmund.

The Eye Test

We made another executive decision this season to ignore the Champions League this season, once again using the backups in order to give us the best chance to be able to make it back next season. It's again paid off as we're currently 3 points behind Bayern, with 13 games to go. We're still in the DfB Pokal, but we've had some favourable draws luckily. Adnan Muric once again tops our goalscoring charts so far, with 10 goals and, unexpectedly, Bruno Waack tops the assist charts with 6

Well, we've got some excellent prospects in this intake, which is apparently ranked as Excellent. Let's check those prospects out

image.thumb.png.94e2c9023a38dd44fd943bc741fe99a3.png

  • M/AML Soren Borg - Work Rate: 13, Pace 15, Techinque 14 - DNA: PASSED

We've finally got some good talent in on the left side. He'll be close to the first team pretty soon as well

image.thumb.png.80d9ec5272377cea0d47b915f48764e4.png

  • AMRC/ST Stipe Ivanjko - Work Rate: 11, Pace 13, Techinque 15 - DNA: PASSED

What a weird octogon. But I think he could be an excellent alternative to Muric up front.

image.thumb.png.7a4e92d6d4de4a291f0a36c841210aff.png

  • D/DM/MC Marc Wohlart - Work Rate: 12, Pace 11, Techinque 14 - DNA: PASSED

A good prospect for the Segundo Volante role and he will be a first team fixture as long as he develops well

How Local Is Your Intake?

1. Simon Steinhauer

Simon is the only prospect within an hour's drive of Cottbus. Probably won't amount  to much, but we'll give him every chance.

The Eyetest
We retained the title by the skin of our teeth, finishing 1st in the Bundesliga on the final day as rivals FC Bayern Munich lost to third placed Borussia Dortmund to hand us the title by a point! Dortmund's win put them level with second so the top three finishers were seperated by just a point. Striker Adnan Muric led the way with 12 goals, with him also coming up with 6 assists for the season . We also squeaked the DfB Pokal, with a Final win on penalties against 1.Bundesliga challengers SV Werder Bremen, after drawing 0-0. We also retained the DfL-Supercup. beating RB Leipzig 4-1 on the night for a magnificent domestic Treble. We looked at our fixtures in this season's UEFA Champions League and decided our best way back into the Champions League for the next season was to play the backups. So we finished 30th in the league and out at the Group Stage. Stats-wise, we finished 3rd on Goals Scored and 1st on Goals Conceded, by some mile, a full 11 goals better than second place.

The Misc

Lefteris Karakitsos finished second in the German U-17 Player of the Year Award
I won the German Players Manager of the Season Award
Tim Brodwolf won the German Player's Player of the Year Award, Marius Tomas was second and Fabian Demmig finished third, completing another clean sweep

So, we had some decent attendences at the pre-World Cup training camps. Sadly, Muric and Waack were cut from the German squad and Sarigul was dropped from the final 23 of the Turkish squad.

So, eventually, we had 8 players representing their countries at the 2046 FIFA World Cup in Japan

image.thumb.png.c0b2f5712a81bfbe4b780bf2424b4de1.png

How did they get on? Let's find out!

Lebanon - Out, Group Stage

Ali Farhat's second attempt at the World Cup did not go as well as his first as his Lebanon side crashed out in the Group Stage, losing 0-4 to Colombia and then drawing 0-0 with Croatiawith both players playing every minute

United States - Out, Third Round

Oliver Lovett and Jovan Busch's USA navigated the Group Stage eventually, losing 0-1 to Serbia with Lovett playing all 90 mins and Busch subbed in the 63rd minute, and then winning 1-0 against Syria, with again Lovett playing all 90 and Busch subbed off, this time in the 78th minute. Busch was on the bench for the whole Second Round clash with Morocco, as Lovett played all 90 mins in the 2-0 win. In the Third Round loss, 1-2, to the Netherlands, there was a turn of events. Busch started and played all 90 mins, whilst Lovett was subbed on 49 mins as the USA crashed out.

Germany - Out, Second Round

A disastrous World Cup for Fabian Demmig and Rudiger Derichs's Germany as they struggled through the Group Stage. Even before the tournament started, Derichs suffered a hamstring injury on his Germany debut, forcing him out of the World Cup 26. Their campaign started with an awful 0-0 draw with Comoros, then didn't get much better in Game 2, giving up a 90+4 minute equaliser to United Arab Emirates in a 1-1 draw. Finally, Scotland put them out of their misery on penalties after a 0-0 draw in the Second Round. Demmig played every minute, picking up the Player of the Match in the Second Round clash.

Romania
-
Out, Quarter Final

In sharp contrast, the World Cup for Marius Tomas and his Romania side was a good one. They sailed through the Group Stage, beating Mexico 1-0 and drawing 1-1 with South Africa. They then faced New Zealand in the Second Round, who they comfortably dispatched 2-0. Then came their crowning glory as Tomas made a Player of the Match contribution with two assists as Romania beat Portugal 3-2 after extra time in the Third Round. Sadly the run came to an end with a 0-1 loss to Spain in the Quarter Finals, but Tomas played every minute of their campaign.

Turkey - Out, Quarter Final

A relatively successful World Cup for Okay Cakir and Turkey. A 3-2 win over Suriname booked their place in the next round, even with finishing the Group Stage with a 0-2 loss to Morocco. It took extra time, but they navigated their way past Serbia in the Second Round, 3-1, to advance to the Third Round, where they faced Cape Verde. This game was notable for Cakir's minutes streak to end, being subbed in the 61st minute of a 2-1 win, having played every minute up to that point. Their run came to a screeching halt in the Quarter Finals, losing 1-4 to France, with Cakir suffering the ignominy of being subbed in the first half...

The Transfers

OUT

Sad to see Jarosch go, I was hoping he'd stay until the end of his career, but he wanted out and hopefully he'll want to be a coach so I can bring him into my backroom staff. Waack was a victim of my desire to shake things up. Needed to clear the AMR logjam and for a lovely price too. O'Reilly never really developed at the club and it's best for all if he moves on. Lauer was also a logjam victim

The Eye Test

We decided to actually test ourselves in the Champions League this season, using our first team there and the backups in the league. This lead to us qualifying for the Round of 16 for the first time. We also had a bit of a shuffle in personnel this season as well. Our traditional exit to a 2.Bundesliga side in the DfB Pokal meant that we could try to work together to go for the CL. We are unbeaten in the league this season, but still 3rd, thanks to a ton of draws. Fatih Sarigul celebrated his first season as main striker with 10 goals so far and Marius Tomas leads us in assists in 7!

The Transfers

This was not a deal that I wanted to do, but it meant more chances for the youth coming through

This is next season's lineup without moves. Let's look through to see when/where there are issues.

GK - Demmig is still #1 and a Germany international. Only a big deal will shift him. Janowski is an excellent back up with Rask as a capable third choice
DR - Incardona is the new first choice right back and Dreher comes back in via transfer to be the #2. Kallnik drops to third choice and I'll be pushing for him to become a coach at the club
DCR - Some slight changes here with Jack Donaldson coming in at third place.
DCL - Probably the only position that has no changes.
DL - Egberts has taken over as first choice with the departure of Bormann. Aydin is second choice and Karbstein is third
DMCR - Cakir is nailed, Zorn has picked up the backup role and Poland international Musiolik is third choice.
DMCL - Mohr is the elder statesman, but still the best player we have in that position. Grgic is the backup with youth player Wohlert being third choice
ML - The Bagman is delivering as first choice with Derichs dropping to backup. 16 year old phenom Soren Borg is the third choice
AMR -  Marius Tomas moves out to the wing and instantly becomes first choice, with Wenzel dropping to backup and Luca Gashi being third choice
AMC - Hoxha becomes the first choice with LGG, the perennial second choice, and Alex Jentzsch coming in at third choice
ST - Sarigul has supplanted Muric as first choice and Busch did as well. The backup and third choice slots are interchangable

This intake was rated Excellent which always works for me. Lets look at the top three prospects!

image.thumb.png.d96330117c1faf7f15bfe6b6036e51a9.png

  • D/DM/MC Samuel Kroos - Work Rate: 15, Pace 10, Techinque 14 - DNA: PASSED

Defensive midfielder a-go-go! Kroos looks like the natural heir to Mohr.

image.thumb.png.53699a5902075f23f7129c0f57beefc2.png

  • MC Daisuke Schulz - Work Rate: 17, Pace 11, Techinque 15 - DNA: PASSED

'The Axis' will be trained as an AMC, as we need some talent in that position

 image.thumb.png.777ad71c872e6b34af51fbc16fbb788e.png

  • AMRLC Sandro Rosati - Work Rate: 14, Pace 10, Techinque 13 - DNA: PASSED

He's a great prospect at the AMR role, as he'll be a good Advanced Playmaker.

Well, this is a serious endorsement of what we are doing as a club with our youth players. How did they get on? Let's find out!

England U21 - Winners

Jack Donaldson rode the England hype train all the way to the Final and won it all. He played no part in the 5-2 win over Austria U21, but played the entire game in a 1-0 win over Belgium U21. He also played the full 90 mins in a 2-0 win over the Netherlands U21 as England finished top of Group A. He came on in the 74th minute of the extra time win over Spain U21 in the Quarter Final and played all 90 mins of the 3-0 win over Italy U21 in the Semi Final. Finally, he was a rock in the 3-0 win in the Final against France U21. For his efforts, he made the UEFA U-21 Euros Team of the Tournament

The Netherlands U21 - Out, Quarter Final

Wim Egberts was called up to the Netherlands squad, traditionally a powerhouse in these areas. And he got his tournament off to a bang with a knuckleball-esque strike from the edge of the area to open the scoring against a 2-1 win over Belgium U21's. Ex-player Brian Vink scored the only goal in first half added time in a 1-0 win over Austria U21's as Wim was subbed in the 76th minute. He was subbed again with a minute to go in the 0-2 loss to England U21. to finish the Group Stage in second place. That put them up against Italy U21's in the Quarter Final and a 0-2 loss sent them home.

Germany U21 - Out, Group Stage

A disastrous Euros for Vincenzo Incardona, Thom Maurer, Arjan Morina and Omer Aydin as Germany crashed out of the Group Stage. Their campaign started with an 2-3 loss to Spain U21, with Incardona scoring twice! Aydin and Morina also played all 90 mins, whilst Maurer didn't get onto the pitch. Things got better in Game 2, beating Wales U21, 4-1. Aydin and Morina were subbed in the 63rd and 93rd minutes, whilst Maurer and Incardona didn't get onto the pitch. Finally, Italy U21 put them out of their misery after a 1-2 defeat. Morina played every minute, with Incardona subbed on at 63 mins and Aydin and Maurer staying on the bench

Republic of Ireland U21
-
Out, Quarter Final

Mickey O'Brien came to the Euros with a point to prove after being loaned out. He played all 90 minutes in the 0-0 draw with Turkey U21's, but he was subbed on after 36 mins in a 3-0 win over Serbia U21. Finally he scored the consolation goal in a 1-3 loss against Sweden U21.  In the Quarter Final, he opened the scoring before being subbed in the 80th minute as they lost on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Poland U21's

Turkey U21 - Out, Group Stage

A poor tournament by Efe Celik, as his Turkey U21 side crashed out in the Group Stage. He didn't play a single minute of his country's first two games, but played 90 minutes with a the dead rubber 3-0 win against Serbia U21, scoring twice.

Serbia U21- Out, Group Stage

Petar Dimitrov and Darko Millic were publicly vilified in the media, along with the rest of the U21 side as they scored no goals and no points in this trainwreck of a tournament. Millic was subbed in the 78th minute of the 0-1 loss to Sweden U21, whilst Dimitrov was left on the bench. Dimitrov was subbed on in the 56th minute, whilst Millic played the whole 90 minutes in the 0-3 loss to Ireland U21's. Finally, their humilation was complete with another 0-3 defeat againsst Turkey U21s as they crashed out.

Welcome to Loan Watch.

Our feeder club is SpVgg Greuther Fürth, finally back in the 3.Liga. This will allow me to be able to send my best prospects off for meaningful football for a season.

In our fifth season in this venture, we sent out AMLC/ST Lefteris Karatsos, DRC/MM Dionysis Galatas, D/WB/M/AML Nils Buss, ML/AMRC/ST Yannick Krause, AMRL/ST Jovan Busch, MC/AMRC Ricky Peters, AMRL/ST Jovan Busch and M/AMR Justin Diestelhorst. The club ended up finishing 1st in 3.Liga last season and were promoted to 2.Bundesliga.

  • Lefteris Karakitsos - An less than average season for the attacking midfielder, as he only played 502 minutes of first team football, scoring 5 goals in 11 appearances. An Avg Rating of 7.09 does bode well, but he didn't have the games.
  • Dionysis Galatas - Playing mainly as a central defender, Galatas racked up 3,150 minutes of first team football for the club, assisting three times and scoring once . His Avg Rating of 7.06 is also a decent marker of a spell there.
  • Clemens Rask - The goalie appeared for 3,330 minutes this season. And his Avg Rating of 6.90 wasn't bad for a starting goalie
  • Jovan Busch - A good loan for the young American as he appeared for 3,104 minutes this season, proving his worth over the season. His 15 goals led the team, however his Avg Rating of 6.99 was decent enough
  • Yannick Krause - A cracking loan spell for the young winger and his 2,532 minutes of first team football, scoring 10 goals and assisting 8 times in 33 appearances for an Avg Rating of 7.20, was not what I was looking for
  • Nils Buss - The attacking left back played 2,356 mins this season, scoring twice and assisting 8 times. With his Avg Rating of 7.05, It's a decent season for him
  • Justin Diestelhorst - The right winger played 985 minutes this season, making 21 sub appearances and scoring 4 goals and 4 assists, with an average rating of 7.04
  • Ricky Peters - The right winger had an awful spell on loan, appearing just twice for 63 minutes of football this season, for an Avg Rating of 6.55
