It would be sweeter to win the league on head to head anyway :D

Don't think away goals count in european comps now anyway so 3-0 was always needed to overcome Sociedad. On course for another CL win.

Yep, a head to head win would of course be very sweet.

Yeah sorry. I'm old, so struggling to come to terms with the fact that they have done away with the away goals rule.

May & Jun 2061

Liga Bwin. We took it all the way to the last game and then we lost it in the pre-match briefing for the Leixões game when my Ass Man pulled me aside and suggested that I should tell the players they were expected to win........  It was pretty late and I was tired and I can neither confirm nor deny that I had drunk a few alcoholic beverages during the evening. In any case I trusted my Ass Man implicitly and heaped pressure on the players.......................

The rest as they say is history and needless to say Benfica won their game. :(

Taça de Portugal Placard:( We lost the league on the last game of the season and then lost the Champions League Final and the Taça de Portugal Placard Final in successive games.

As a tiny comfort I do find that that ups and downs, and trials and tribulations make for a more interesting read compared to steamrolling and winning everything all of the time. I'm sure you'll come back stronger next season.

Yeah, and that's exactly the way I see it too.

Had we won 3 Liga Bwin/Champions league doubles on the bounce it would have been a little ridiculous. I'm still gutted to lose all 3, but that's just the way it goes.

102 GD over the season is amazing and 5 of the 19 goals conceded were to your team,  Benfica are an incredible team. There is just no margin for losing in the league.

Losing the cup to Porto though

I made a mistake.

I played the same team in all 3 games, 15th May, 28th May & 1st June. Fatigue wasn't a huge issue, but I should have played the Reserves in the 3rd game, (the Taça de Portugal Placard Final). I think by then my head had gone, (and so had theirs).

Benfica really are a force, but we stuck 4 past them in the home league game, beat them in the Allianz Cup Finaland the Taça de Portugal Placard Semi-Final, but they still won the league.

Let's not even talk about the Porto Final. :seagull:

Ha! Striker-Keeper for the extra time win and progress from the Quarterfinals of the UCL after a 90th minute goal to force extra time :D

Now with a decent advantage over Porto in the Semi’s.

Oh yes, congrats on your 3-0 against Real Sociedad.

The league is tight, though in your advantage

And you’ve made another cup final, at Benfica’s expense :brock:

It’s going to be a big month next month!

Youth Intake day. Mar 2061

What we were expecting. 1x GK, 1x FB, 1x SC.

5679002b982da03b0560833ea9057011.png

What have we got? 1x AMR, 2x DL, 1x AML.

e0c83257b0fa0c915d7730ef8d16e52d.png

83867e7a871afe3d2787a7bd21c2779b.png

Squad by PA. I'm not really sure what to make of the intake at this stage.

  • We only have 1x Low Det + (Unamb) player so I'm not offering a contract to (61k).
  • There are some nice Nationalities.
  • I don't like the personalities, although there are 3x Amb, 1x F.Amb, 1x F.Pro & 1x F.Det.
  • We only have 1 Low (Det) player and I'm hopeful (61b) & (61d) will pop to double-figures (Det) soon.

1e0909477ff977038ed7ae20a797eb89.png

Squad by Actual PA. Well this is better than expected.

  • I'm happy that I chose not to offer a contract to (61k).
  • I wish that I hadn't offered a contract to (61p)
  • We've got 4x players at 130+ PA.
  • We've got 3 more players at 120+ PA.
  • The top 5 players, (by actual PA) have decent starting CA.
  • Players ranked 6, 7 & 8, (by actual PA), have low starting CA, (50, 56 & 47), so it will be harder for them to reach their PA.

a91d7211f047719e3734c9ed0eebfd12.png

(61c) Novak (PER) (CRO) looks decent, but I'm not sure he looks like a typical winger, although he certainly isn't a DL or SC.

da7dc04d433c3755b02e86d255d619c7.png

(61h) Fradinho (POR) looks a decent striker, although he will be a "lefty" playing on the right.

e050f60a10203d95d1395f169519b625.png

(61a) Mateus (BRA) (POR) I really like the look of, (as a right-sided second striker).

d52feb895d8cb722517af454e64edb3c.png

(61j) Monteiro (POR) 6'0" looks decent, although my plan is to end the save once Ako retires so I'm not sure we need another GK.

af3127752b94a33e61ac9b0c6c743498.png

(61b) Müller (GER) 6'2" DC is a left back, but he's 6'2" at 15, slow and can jump so I see him more as a centre-half than a left back.

d965edafe349f1f9517232af6b00ca4a.png

Now we have the 3 players with decent PA but who have low starting CA.

(61i) Lopes (POR) looks awful physically and it will take some work to improve him.

032b93e4d376be3720e1741ffc540606.png

(61g) Dumange (POR) (SUI) looks ok mentally and reasonable physically, but poor technically. Lots of work needed.

671aa8989c66fbb5eced567c46f4e155.png

(61l) Soares (CPV) (POR) looks decent technically & physically, but very poor mentally. He looks decent though.

Not sure I’m keen on this intake, though squad depth I guess.

Been a few intakes that has a star come through.

Not sure if you’d consider this gaming the system, but if you want to sell a keeper, would setting them as a set piece taker make it easier to? Or harder because they will be unhappy?

Meh, not the big month ending I was hoping to read.

Still though, a fantastic season, coming second by a fine margin, and making the finals of UCL and the Cup.

Yeah, it was a tough end to the season but we're a year stronger and just have to go again.

Stars are all well and good, but if we only have 1 star and then little else from an intake then while the star is obviously great, it doesn't actually help that much, and of course if we can't keep the star at the club then we've got nothing.

We got 5 players through that intake with a CA/PA good enough that they are likely to be able to impact the 1st Team that is challenging for titles. That's not good. That's brilliant.

Yes gaming the system to sell a GK would work, but it's also completely counter-productive as a big part of this save is to see how many goals we can score with a GK and Ako is on the verge of beating my all-time record. Selling him, (even for a ridiculous price), would be just silly.

FIFA Club World Cup. Jun 2061.

The holders are PSG and the hosts are Scotland

It seems I'm completely out of touch now and have absolutely no idea what the format of this competition is now.

There are 8 Groups of 3, (so 24 teams involved), but there is also a Preliminary Round which has just 1 team getting knocked out, (so a total of 25 teams involved). All seems very strange to me.

567e8a58b86bd381d827d5b28c22c86b.png

Well that didn't last long.

e07d63950b3ee9c21e9e4911b8ea6823.png

We did ok in the Group games, but I noticed after the Fluminese game that although there was 6 days between the 2 Group games, the players didn't seem to recover physically at all. There was training scheduled, but something wasn't working as it should and there were absolutely 0 players in a squad of 23 who were fit to play against Liverpool to my normal standards.

188ca834919c017b8c547ea28cf13ab9.png

I'm a little bit peeved at this. Not because it makes much of a difference, but because I feel we have been cheated out of an opportunity to win a trophy that we may not get many more opportunities to win. Also, 39 years into a save it's a bit of an anti-climax to get this far and for this to happen. There was no extra time in the Liverpool game. They scored 3 goals in the 1st half. It's not normal for the players to be in this state after these 3 games. It's almost as if they had been playing the games without any training, but although I delegate training I have checked and there was training scheduled.

dd3be615812f1c68acc86d9d29ab3eca.png

Just as a comparison, here is the Liverpool squad. Their players are tired after playing the game, (as you would expect), but it's on completely normal levels that you would usually expect to see and nothing like our situation at all. Very strange.

Anyway, enough negativity. What's done is done. I binned off 3 different competitions in 17 days so who am I to complain?

Portugal might get to 1st in the coefficients  with a good year in europe next season

I'm surprised we're not top already if I'm honest. We've got to the Final 3 years running now.

Belenenses. We've been really consistent over the last 4 years after a long period of struggle in Europe.

2061. Champions League Runners Up
2060. Champions League Winners.
2059. Champions League Winners.
2058. Champions League Semi-Final.
2057. Champions League 1st Knockout Round.

Benfica. I think they need to be doing better than this with their quality. Quarters at least should be their aim.

2061. Champions League Quarter-Final.
2060. Champions League 1st Knockout Round.
2059. Champions League Quarter-Final.
2058. Champions League 1st Knockout Round.
2057. Champions League 1st Knockout Round.

Porto. getting to the Quarters & Semi is good for Porto, but I think when they do drop into the Europa League they need to be doing better.

2061. Champions League Semi-Final
2060. Champions League Quarter-Final.
2059. Champions League 1st Knockout Round.
2058. Europa League Quarter-Final.
2057. Champions League 1st Knockout Round.

Sporting. Europa League Champions is great, but dropping into the Europa Conference and getting knocked out so early is awful.

2061. Europa League Quarter-Final.
2060. Champions League 1st Knockout Round.
2059. Champions League 1st Knockout Round.
2058. Europa League Champions
2057. Europa Conference 2nd Knockout Round.

Braga. This is absolutely brilliant from Braga with 4 consecutive European Semi-Finals in the last 4 seasons.

2061. Champions League Semi-Final
2060. Europa League Semi-Final
2059. Europa Conference Semi-Final.
2058. Europa League Semi-Final
2057. Champions League Group.

The other clubs have been in and out of Europe. There really is a Big 5 in Portugal right now.

The 4-year WCC format is crap, hope when it happens IRL they think about returning to year to year WCC

It's not simple actually. Every year is a little strange, but then again AFCON being every 2 years also seems strange. It seems strange because I'm from Europe and the EURO's and the EURO's are every 4 years opposite the World Cup Finals.

It's always been low on my list of priorities in previous FM's, but I would rather win it and then ignore it.

The fatigue issue in club world Cup is a well known issue I think from memory. There's been a few posts about it in general community forum and I can't remember any resolution to the problem (although there might be one)

That makes sense. Glad it's not me but shame that it seems it will happen again and again. At least it wasn't something I was looking to tick-off complete as part of the major goals. That would be a real mare.

Aug 2061.

Liga Bwin. A decent start to the month saw us win all 4 games without conceding a goal. Benfica have scored more goals than us, (10 more goals in 2 more games), but they have also conceded 1 and so far we haven't.

532 apps at 26 for Ako is quite impressive as well. Reckon you could get him to 1000?

I was just having a look at that. He's played 11 "full" seasons so far, 4 for the B Team (33, 33, 33 & 32) +3 more appearances in other seasons,= 134 and 7 for the 1st Team (34+20 34+18 34+19 34+21 34+18 34+25 34+29) + 6 appearances when he also played a full B Team season = 394.

134+394 = 528  (which is correct because I haven't counted this seasons games yet).

At that sort of rate....

At the end of the 2061/62 season, (using 34+20 games as an average per season), he will be 27 years old and will have made 582 appearances.
At the end of the 2062/63 season, (using 34+20 games as an average per season), he will be 28 years old and will have made 636 appearances.
At the end of the 2063/64 season, (using 34+20 games as an average per season), he will be 29 years old and will have made 690 appearances.
At the end of the 2064/65 season, (using 34+20 games as an average per season), he will be 30 years old and will have made 744 appearances.
At the end of the 2065/66 season, (using 34+20 games as an average per season), he will be 31 years old and will have made 798 appearances.
At the end of the 2066/67 season, (using 34+20 games as an average per season), he will be 32 years old and will have made 852 appearances.
At the end of the 2067/68 season, (using 34+20 games as an average per season), he will be 33 years old and will have made 906 appearances.
At the end of the 2069/69 season, (using 34+20 games as an average per season), he will be 34 years old and will have made 960 appearances.
At the end of the 2069/70 season, (using 34+20 games as an average per season), he will be 35 years old and will have made 1,014 appearances.

1,014 club appearances seems doable barring serious injury + of course he currently has 77x Caps for France, 7x U21 Caps, 1x U20 Cap, 3x U19 Caps, 3x U18 Caps whch would bring him to 1,105 career appearances.

If he plays to 35 and I keep playing the save until then, I estimate that he will be on...... (165 goals at the beginning of this season + 20 goals per season for 9 more seasons = 180 so 345 career goals.

@MerryGuido has a striker who is about to make 1,000+ league appearances, scoring 1200+ league goals and God knows how many career appearances and goals. It sort of puts things in perspective don't you think?

Assuming I can keep him playing past 35 then.....

At the end of the 2070/71 season, (using 34+20 games as an average per season), he will be 36 years old and will have made 1,158 appearances.
At the end of the 2071/72 season, (using 34+20 games as an average per season), he will be 37 years old and will have made 1,213 appearances.

I don't think the issue here is retirement. The biggest issue here is when FM23 is released and how quickly I can get through the seasons.

Liga Bwin. I can't begin to tell you how frustrating this loss to Varzim was but I will try. :(

  • We were struggling with injuries and lack of fitness so the squad was weakened anyway, but I perhaps weakened it a little too much.
  • We had a penalty saved.
  • The opposition GK who saved our penalty was (45i) Ion (POR)(ROU) 6'2", (product of our Academy), and this wasn't the 1st time he has saved a penalty against us. #
  • The goal they scored was from deep in their own half after our GK took a wide free-kick short and we lost the ball. I don't mind him taking those free-kicks, (I have selected it on purpose), but I want him to cross the ball!!!)
  • We hit the woodwork twice.
  • We won the xG battle 3.01 - 0.27.

Ah well. As one winning/not-losing/not conceding streak ends, so another begins.

I had considered earlier this month whether my priority was the Champions League or Liga Bwin, and I immediately concluded that the Liga Bwin would be our priority. The problem with this was that I immediately forgot that and after we lost to Dortmund, my eye was drawn to the PAOK game 4 days after the Varzim game and that definitely played a part in my squad selection for the Varzim game. Silly silly boy. :seagull:

UEFA Champions League. I selected a weakened squad for the Dortmund game, (because this competition is not a priority). but a 1st half red card wih the score at 0-0 removed any chance of us getting a result. The rotated team were plenty good enough for PAOK.

Liga Bwin. As rubbish as the loss to Varzim was last month, it was brilliant to absolutely smash Benfica this month. We're level on pts at the top, but obviously after giving Benfica a hiding we're ahead of them on the head to head basis.

I see that you mentioned FM23.
Any plans for a save in FM23? I did enjoy your Irchester save and I am certainly enjoying this one :D

I've got a few things on the shortlist, but nothing concrete at the moment. One thing that I "think" I've decided on though is that rather than going #YouthOnly, it will be a scouting based save. I've seen others play with all attributes completely hidden, and I must admit I like the idea of that. I'm just not sure when such a skin, (that covers up the attributes), will be made available.

Liga Bwin. I'm really sorry but it's just so hard to type between sobs as the tears pour endlessly down my cheeks, so I will keep this brief. :(

Hi Jim - you can do that now...

In Preferences > Skin colours, do this:

Change the 'a' to 0, then you'll have this:

Ooh! I knew it could be done, but had no idea it was that easy. Brilliant stuff. I will definitely be using this. Cheers @_Ben_:thup:

Who are Dezembro?  Just noted them first time. They must have came quite far to reach top tier.

Dezembro are actually S.U. 1º Dezembro.

Although they don't have a Tycoon Chairman, there were 2 different failed Tycoon takeovers in 2042 & 2043.

I've never actually taken much notice of this graphic before, but it's actually brilliant. Yellow bars are players out and Blue are players in so their spending has been very low as you would expect.

238f1d653fcf7365d6ff8c9b490ec722.png

They started in a non-playable league but in 2024/25 they were promoted to the 4th Tier.

86704b843fda2ecd6ae60170e86fb3c8.png

They then spent 6 seasons in the 3rd Tier.

def27f019e1a48f38a7bbf0d3c761a0e.png

They were then relegated back to the 4th Tier and spent 5 more seasons at that level.

7abacfb7c7d9bfe3ed03a200c957b1ce.png

They were then promoted again and even spent 1 of the next 8 seasons in the 2nd Tier.

abe1d90236a464ef451ad7f0fface386.png

They managed to get promoted to the 2nd Tier for a 2nd time, and this time they were able to avoid relegation there and spent 8 seasons at that level.

a8b6a977aed6bfadb6c7d198722ab12c.png

They were then promoted to the Liga Bwin, (on 3 occasions), and have been a bit of a yo-yo club for the last 9 seasons.

I look at the finances pages every month, but I rarely look at this and don't even glance at it when I view the Transfers - History screen. It makes for pretty interesting viewing.

abe64ccede8685e7913b09a64deb889f.png

I really like this graph because it continues over the course of the whole save rather than just a set period.

abdd14c4b861954817ce9d3f39d36eb9.png

I have also noticed that the graph can be minimized and it means that the transfers in/out page can be made much bigger. This is the original size.

698844d0f15083a834b64cff20a37640.png

And this is it after the graph has been minimized. I have never done this before.  :idiot:

Dec 2061

Liga Bwin. This is more like it and we're back on form after a shocking November. Benfica drew at home with EdA and it's given us a sniff.

UEFA Champions League. The Reserves played really well in this game and were really unlucky not to win and top the Group. Unfortunately finishing 2nd means that we will play Spurs in the 1st Knockout Round.

Crash.

We've had a crash the day we won the Allianz Cup and silly me I forgot to save at the end of both November and December so we lose almost 3 months. :( I've been really good at saving during this save and do it almost religiously on the 1st of each month, (when I post the update), but for some reason today I didn't do it. I was trying and failing to multi-task.

We had just won a trophy and Benfica had dropped more points in the league meaning that we were top and sitting pretty. We had also just beaten Benfica in the Cup Final and I was expecting them to take a further morale hit and increase the chances of them dropping more points in the league.

The biggest issue however was the transfers. You will see lower down that the Jan 61 window had been busy and although we were losing (50l) Bartlett (ENG) * on a free at the end of the season, (and that was a blow), I had miraculously arranged a deal to sign 44c) Ogbu (ENG) (NGA) * on a free coming the other way from Real Madrid.

The other thing I had managed was to sell (51a) Marinho (POR) *** for £93M (I think). (It was £9?M anyway).

As far as I'm concerned we had a VERY good window.

Very frustrating bit I only have myself to blame.

Transfers. This was a big error on my part. I tried to re-negotiate his contract last month and played a little too tough in the negotiations and they fell through. Before I was able to get the deal done, Lyon came in and snapped him up on a free. He's not 1st choice, but he he has still scored almost 200 career goals for us. Losing him is a big blow and I will have to look to re-sign him after his 1st year. It will be costly, but I need to get it done.

9c4ae739a7e48374bf96b6cc32e38a3f.png

If we thought £111M then £139M is monstrous. (53a) Khwinana (ENG) (RSA) *** has 3.5 +3 years left on his contract so I'm in no rush to sell, (whatever the price).

4d0916b2ce873596062cc8577c5e8bdb.png

£153M is ridiculous and we still have 3 weeks of the window to go. The thing is, I don't even want to sell him for £300M or £500M. I can't go out and sign someone so I'm just not selling;.

678f7501fc184447848bdd026d16a37e.png

I'm actually willing to accept the right offer for (51a) Marinho (POR) ***, but it needs to be closer to £100M rather than £64M. He's 26, but hasn't played well this season, (or last season for that matter), and has 18 months left on his contract. We have 2 good other options on the right flank but they need to get closer to his valuation of £72M-£87M before I accept.
