San Marino Challenge

The Goal - To win the World Cup with the tiny nation of San Marino

The San Marino challenge entails taking international football minnows San Marino to the top with a World Cup victory. This seems impossible however San Marino has an ace up it's sleeve. San Marino Calcio is a club based in San Marino that plays in Italy's Serie D. Getting this club promoted to Serie A and investing heavily in youth facilities, junior coaching and youth recruitment should see higher quality Sammarinese players produced leading to a better national team. I tried this in FM17 and did alright, this time I want to try and complete it.

Goals

Take San Marino Calcio to Serie A -

Win Serie A with San Marino Calcio -

Win the Champions League with San Marino Calcio -

Get San Marino into the top 100 ranked National Teams -

Qualify for a major tournament with the San Marino National Team -

Win the European Championships with San Marino -

Become the number 1 ranked national team in the world -

Win the World Cup with San Marino -

Win the Champions League with San Marino Calcio with a squad of purely Sammarinese players -

Current state of the club. They reside in Serie D. For us to have any chance of completing the challenge we must be plying our trade in Serie A so we have the money to improve our facilities and get better Sammarinese regens.

Brief National Team Overview 2018

I don't manage the national team yet and I won't be managing them for a little while as there isn't much point while the club languishes in Serie D. As we get promoted I'll take them over, probably when I'm in Serie B. They're currently ranked 203rd in the world.

This is the best player in the national side and he's actually pretty good tbh, the best since Andy Selva declined/retired. Other than him there is Benedettini who's a keeper who starts in Serie C, maybe I'll look to sign him when we reach Serie C.

Is the db file any good? Any bugs or wrongly set league rules and so on?

Nothing I have noticed so far but I haven't really played around much yet nor do I really know what everything should be. Looks ok for now though, hopefully I can just get out of Serie D first season and take it out after that

Currently in December and it's not looking like we're gonna be getting promoted as it stands, the team at the top are flying and and Modena are pulling away a little. Even finishing 2nd only gets us into the playoffs which if I remember correctly is really hard to get out of. Now I wouldn't be opposed to one more year extra in Serie D if it came to it but there's a problem...622572768_2018FinancesDec1.thumb.png.948a5ada9ce8103f634d2a09c6384957.png

Our finances are DIRE! Even though I'm £700 p/w under our wage budget we are haemorrhaging money and I'm not sure if we'll even survive another season in Serie D. So I'm debating just splashing out in January and going balls to the wall for promotion to try and save the club (although Serie C money sucks iirc)

Huge Result! Big comeback in the 2nd half against the team top of the league away from home. We absolutely smacked them too, this bodes well for the rest of the season and closes the gap between us and them to 7 points. Hopefully their morale is down after this result.

Something I've noticed so far is how much having my right back overlap is killing teams. He's a natural wingback so I stuck him in that role with my LB just as a full back. Wanted to ensure both players were comfortable in their roles. It's inadvertently worked out perfectly, the right back is constantly forward and causing havoc and then the LB stays at home and tucks in to ensure we don't get rinsed on the counter.

Almost every attack my midfield 3 will control the ball, the RB darts up and either drags a defender out with him creating tons of space or they let the RB go free, my CMs fire it over to him and all of a sudden he's wide open and able to cross into the box.

He currently has 5 assists in 19 games but he's created a ton more goals just purely by being out there and dragging someone over to cover him. The guy doing the damage from RB is also from San Marino which is nice.

Still trying to chase down the leaders Pergolettese but barring a slowdown on their part there's nothing I can do, they are too good.

2018-2019 Youth Intake - We've been BLESSED

115327676_2018YouthIntake.thumb.png.9a82b65e6bfcb630c05b4cc035cc5d44.png

Wow! A 5* potential player from San Marino who's already 2.5* ability aged 15!

1158877133_2018Zonzini.thumb.png.48997dd5b0f92f58221f838d0eee7183.png

Zonzini is a complete gem, I really can't believe how lucky this is to get him in Serie D. I haven't upgraded anything yet. And he also has a good personality. What a gem. I don't currently play with an AM but I'll probably rejig the formation to get him into the team. This guy is gonna be a beast, not even sure we will be able to hold onto him.

He's also fully SM so no dual nationality drama... he's so ugly though .

It is always a relief to see the single nationality, wonder if he'd be good enough for Italy? He looks immense!

This is the table with 3 games to, interestingly we play both of the teams above us. If we win all 3 games we just need one other slipup from these two to sneak into the playoffs. Not sure it'll happen though, us 3 teams have set an insane pace.

I’m not 100% sure, but if i’m Right the Team winning Serie D Playoffs, do NOT get promoted. So you have to win the League.

the Winners of the Playoffs gets into the List of repechage and have to Hope that some of the Teams in higher leagues get bankrupt. In this case they pick a Team from this List, like Imolese and Cavese last year.

That's interesting. Gonna re-tool in the summer and *should* hopefully just blast through this season. Had so many awful players who were already at the club on decent wages so will be nice to be able to put that money to use. Although I suspect my wage budget might get slashed.

Told them before the season I would get into the playoffs and we just missed out. I have to get 9 points from my opening 5 games next season or I'm getting the boot which is a bit harsh in my opinion lol

2018-19 Season Review - Frustration

Serie D

803761167_2018LeagueTable.thumb.png.5b0a3e96ca2c7d46400fad70c1a8bf09.png

We came up short this season of both the league win and playoffs. The two teams ahead of us got out front early and never really looked back. A shaky November saw us pick up 1 win in 5 games and that was enough to give these teams a gap that we never closed. Annoying but we go again next season.

Transfers

1339887087_2018Transfers.thumb.png.ae863afcaf1fb0650e601b8960622f04.png

I made the transfers from Colombo down. We brought in a lot of loanees who were a good help, in particular Costa was a very solid left back who defended extremely well the entire season. The best of the freebies was San Marino's own Matteo Vitaoli, veterans of this challenge will probably recognise the name. He has 55 caps for San Marino and chipped in with a decent 7 goals and 10 assists in 30 games.

Awards and Team Of The Season

62652150_2018Awards.thumb.png.b9783f40d7d84d8b661848c643762035.png

Matteo Gasperi cleaned up at the awards and with an average rating of 7.51 and a crazy 12 goals and 10 assists from midfield its easy to see why. This guy is a class above and I'm praying nobody comes in for him in the summer because without him this season would have been much worse. Colombo up top probably needs to be replaced, he didn't get the production I was hoping for with 13 goals in 33 games. I think we can do better.

Youth Intake

894186008_2018YouthIntake.thumb.png.927c5cb51fc6417055ed23d15ff56dfc.png101310964_2018Zonzini.thumb.png.58d28b6af14fc3601575d4f59f3285eb.png

First ever youth intake gave us a complete gem. Single nationality Nicola Zonzini is already a backup level player aged 15 with good determination and personality. If developed properly he will do damage for a long team on the international level. I'm surprised how good he is considering we are in Serie D with no facility upgrades to speak of. He plays AM which is kind of annoying, I think I will adapt the tactic next season to try and fit him into the team and give him first team football but I'm also training him to play CM.

Finances

1471112891_2018Finances.thumb.png.9e8e09ce306888e4403499d00c64ddd9.png

Finances are probably gonna be a big issue next season. Despite me not even getting close to maxing the wage budget I was given we still lost money hand over first and needed 175k of investments from the board to stay afloat. If the boards money dries up we are gonna be in massive trouble. It's imperative we get out of this division as soon as possible.

Had one of those 'San Marino on the verge of signing' news things come through about this guy who I'd never actually heard of in my life. Checked him out and he was playing in the 5th tier of Italian football on a non-contract. His potential is extremely high and he's 3* ability aged 16. Scooped him up on a free transfer and unless I can find a better striker it looks like he's going to be leading the line this season.

So thanks for the random news thing SI.

I had that the other day, was managing in a non-storied save in the lower tiers in Portugal, had no members of staff with any knowledge of Scandinavia, but got linked with an amateur regen centre mid from Sweden, he's now my best player at 17, 4.5* current. Febi looks very handy!

So yesterday I was set a points target for the start of this season of 9 points from 5 games or I'd get sacked. I thought that would be easy but these are the results from the first two games of the season...

21170715_2019result1.thumb.png.cc2c4c89a414d569415a82146f244aaf.png520947186_2019result2.thumb.png.0ad81cfc254ee09e553a5fbe62f0344d.png

At least Zonzini scored I guess :/

We need 7 points from 3 games. One loss and I think we're sacked. Lol

Hey! Been enjoying following this challenge so far. It bothers me a little that no clubs have logos - especially that the club you manage don't.
I would recommend the Standard Logo Pack from FMScout.
Cheers for sharing this challenge, I look forward to following it in the future - and good luck!

2019-20 January Update

500170920_2019JanTable.thumb.png.bd03a10a6f7fa9cca3748ab9dbb224d5.png

Extremely tight between us and Pavia at the moment. They've been top pretty much all year but as you can see with their last 5 games they've only won 2 and we've managed to capitalise and now get level with them. I dare to jinx it when I say that I think we *SHOULD* get at least playoffs this year barring an absolute collapse but I am of course hoping to go up as champions. Going to have my eyes peeled all January for a striker as 16 year old Febi has 6 goals in 20 which isn't really good enough, although he does have a knack of bagging very important goals.

Special shoutout to San Marino's own D'Addario who is once again causing absolute mayhem from right back. He has a ridiculous 8 man of the matches in 17 games from wing back and he keeps popping up with extremely vital goals or assists. In my last game I was at home vs the team bottom of the league, battered them for 90 mins but couldn't score and then in the 94th minute the hero D'Addario pops up in the box for a corner and ends up smashing it home.

Two horse race.  As you say, very very tight!  Do you have to play Pavia again?

Yep, and away from home. Spanked them at our place the first time we played so hopefully go and do a job on them again!

2018-2019 Youth Intake - Pretty Dead

1068170200_2019YouthIntake.thumb.png.89f7307f362bb9b14f168543cb874677.png

Last year gave us Zonzini so we probably deserved to have a pretty terrible intake. Not much to get excited about here tbh.

1335374812_2019Fabbri.thumb.png.0b9e1d3679290da35fd35fed776d780d.png

Looks ok, plays AM though which is Zonzini's position. I'm not really too hyped with this guy.
