Okay, I'm back and we're back under way.

Update 142

Years: 11, Months: 142, Days: 4315

A wise man once said to me ‘If you haven’t finished your week’s work by lunchtime on Monday, you’re doing something wrong’. It is only now that I wish I had asked him in retort ‘What if you are fifth in La Liga with Barcelona? Are you doing something wrong then?’. And the answer would surely be yes.

Even so, Haowan Madridstas remains in charge of Barcelona, and his mighty pay packet makes sure he is Secure in his job. Okay, maybe I’m being slightly harsh on Madridstas: he did have a very good month his month. Although it started with a 1-1 draw at Valladolid, Barca went on to beat Racing 4-0, Murcia 8-0, with four Marquinhos goals, Hércules 1-0 and Recreativo 2-0. But they remain fifth, and time is beginning to run out for an assault on the Champions League places.

One could also argue that Lucas Volman is underperforming in Spain. His Real Madrid side dropped one place this month to 3rd, after seven dropped points this month. Victories came over Sporting and Sevilla, but Real couldn’t capitalise in tough home matches against Atlético Madrid and Zaragoza, drawing them both 1-1, and lost 0-2 at Elche. An away trip to Barcelona opens next month.

Over in England, things are pretty much nicely sorted. Lawrence Lazewski’s Man City lifted the Premier League with a win at home to Sheffield Wednesday, who had just been relegated following a loss to Chelsea. West Ham and Middlesbrough also ended up going down, canning their managers in the process, but with two games still to go in the league not everything is done and dusted. Tom Smith’s Arsenal are guaranteed a Champions League berth for next season, and will probably finish 2nd in the league for the second year running. In April, they drew both home games, against Chelsea and Hull, and won both away games, against Aston Villa and Blackburn. A goal from 23-year-old Danish midfielder Michael Hansen, however, put the Gunners out of the FA Cup in the Semi Finals. Man City, Hansen’s team, will go on to face Chelsea in the Final after the Pensioners knocked out Portsmouth in a 3-2 thriller decided by a Robin Ridley goal in the 90+1st minute. To be fair, Chelsea out-shot Portsmouth 10-1. Meanwhile, Super Lampard’s Ipswich won the Championship, after garnering 99 points from 45 games. Q.P.R., Fréderico Canvey’s Everton and Cardiff booked themselves playoff places, and Bristol City, Carlisle and Bristol Rovers all went down. Birmingham suffered another 10-point deduction for entering administration, but have avoided the drop quite comfortably.

This month also saw European football. In the Champions League, Arsenal travelled to Zaragoza, only to lose 0-2. But the Gunners won the home leg 5-0, with a hattrick from Diogo, allowing them to reach the Semi Finals. Meanwhile, Chelsea beat Real Madrid 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, but were eliminated when they lost 0-2 in Spain. Atlético Madrid won 2-1 away to A.C. Milan and proceeded with ease after a 3-1 home victory meant a 5-2 aggregate win. Roma and Man City were deadlocked, after the home sides won both of their legs 1-0, but Liam Ferguson’s side won the penalty shootout in Italy 5-4. In the Semi Finals, Arsenal welcomed Atlético Madrid, and won 1-0, and Man City welcomed Real Madrid, and also won 1-0. Good luck to the Spanish police forces who will attempt to patrol their capital city for two consecutive days with two fiery football matches.

In the Europa League, Tyler Burrows’s Udinese went out to Lyon on away goals after a 1-1 home draw and a 0-0 away one. Lazio stunned Liverpool, drawing 1-1 in Italy but sneaking a 1-0 win at Anfield. Brettney Joven’s Leeds knocked out Rangers, winning 3-1 at home, meaning a 2-3 defeat in Scotland was enough to send them through. And Inter had little trouble against Porto, drawing 2-2 in Portugal and clinching victory with a 3-1 home win. They will be hopeful of reaching the Final after they grabbed an away goal in their Semi Final against Leeds, losing 1-2 at Elland Road. Lyon and Lazio drew 1-1 in France, which will probably mean the Italians will reach their second Europa League Final in four years.

We’ll conclude with Italy, where Lord Weeman’s Napoli are continuing their flirt with Champions League qualification. They won all their games in April, beating Bologna, Atalanta, Udinese, Brescia and Catania in the league, and winning 2-1 at the home of Europa League Semi-Finalists Lazio in the Coppa Italia, sending them through to the Final 4-1 on aggregate. Yet Weeman is still Insecure in his job. Tyler Burrows’s Udinese are 8th after a pretty balanced month. As well as the defeat to Napoli, they lost to Juventus, and they also lost 0-2 at home to A.C. Milan in the Coppa Italia, putting them out 0-3 on aggregate. But victories, albeit narrow, came over Catania, Brescia and Mantova. Burrows’s team are virtually guaranteed to finish 8th or higher, and Sampdoria and Lazio are both only two points ahead. They need 7th if they want European football next year.

As promised, some hopes and dreams were shattered this month. We’ll see how the season finishes up next month. I’ll leave you with this: Liam Ferguson managed his fifth England game this month, in what seems to be an annual friendly against the Netherlands. This time it was in Amsterdam, and the Dutch won 3-1, thanks in part to two Klaas-Jan Huntelaar goals. That’s something to think about, especially considering that the Netherlands are in England’s Euro 2020 group.

This month;

Lord Weeman, Napoli

pips Haowan Madridstas to the post. Weeman won every single game this month, which keeps him in contention for Champions League football next season, and put him into the Coppa Italia Final. Madridstas won all but one, a draw, and his victories included an 8-0 win over Murcia and a 4-0 one over Racing. But I have to punish that draw and give the award to Weeman.

Another season out of the way but our final five stay as five. How did the managers do in May?

Cool Manager’s Inter did hold up to lift the Serie A title, holding back Roma with a 12-point gap. Fortunately for Lord Weeman, his side did do well enough to get into the Champions League, and they in fact finished 3rd. In May, they won 3-2 away to Juventus, before victory over Mantova and a draw against Sampdoria. A.C. Milan claimed the final Champions League spot, with Juventus, Lazio and James Ridley’s Sampdoria making it into the Europa League. That does of course mean that Tyler Burrows’s Udinese didn’t, after they picked up just two from nine points in a difficult month. They lost to Sampdoria and drew with Lazio and A.C. Milan. Fiorentina were relegated in 18th place, 10 places below their expected finish, so understandably, Lars Tommersen got the sack, after just 174 days in charge. Theo Stigarakis, who was fired from Mallorca earlier in the year, returned to Italy after almost a three year absence to manage Fiorentina. Catania and Pisa also went down, while Livorno, Reggina and one of Bari, Torino, Lecce and Siena will make the step up. And Lord Weeman, after ending the season well, was looking for his fourth title with Napoli in the Coppa Italia Final.

Road to the Final – Coppa Italia

Napoli’s Italian Cup campaign started in the First Round, when they beat Reggina 3-0. This was followed by the same scoreline against Juventus in the Quarter Finals, after a particularly strong performance. Meanwhile, Marco van Basten’s A.C. Milan got through the First Round with a 2-0 victory over Livorno, and knocked out Empoli 3-1 in the Last Eight. They beat Udinese in the Semi Finals, winning 1-0 at home and 2-0 away, while Napoli booked their place in the Final by beating Lazio 2-0 at home and 2-1 away.

Rome’s Olimpico was, as is tradition, the host for the Final, and just over 81,000 fans came out to see the spectacle. A.C. Milan bossed the match, but were unable to find a breakthrough. Lord Weeman’s Napoli weren’t completely outplayed, but they certainly spent a lot of time on the back foot, and so it was a great relief for Weeman that when the deadlock was broken, in the 83rd minute, it was by his team. Argentine striker Federico Laurito received the ball from Marek Hamsik, ran past the challenge of Norwegian defender Fredrik Klungervik and slotted the ball into the bottom corner from just outside the penalty area. A.C. Milan, slightly stunned I’d say, couldn’t react and so Weeman won his second Coppa Italia, three years after winning his first.

We’ll just wrap up things in England, where Tom Smith’s Arsenal won their last two games of the season, beating fellow FA Cup Semi-Finalists Portsmouth 2-0 at home and Crystal Palace 1-0 away. They finish 2nd, while Chelsea and Liverpool join the Gunners and Man City in the Champions League next season. High-flying Leicester, whom many predicted at the start of the season would be struggling against relegation, took 5th place, while Man United, where Leo Dodge has performed quite a revolution, finished sixth. Despite a crisis in the middle of the season which saw Dave Jones out and Jellybean Man in, Fulham finished seventh, and all three of those sides will take Europa League places next season. In the FA Cup Final, which was again given to Howard Webb, Chelsea denied Man City the double, winning 1-0 thanks to a John Fleck penalty. Super Lampard’s Ipswich and Queens Park Rangers got automatic promotion to the Premier League, although Q.P.R. boss Glenn Hoddle jumped ship this month to Murcia. Fréderico Canvey’s Everton were knocked out in the Playoff Semi Finals by Huddersfield, 4-6 on aggregate, while Wigan beat Cardiff 3-2 despite a 2-2 draw at the DW Stadium. An extra time winner from 27-year-old striker Mark Deakin saw the Terriers into the Premier League.

I left you with the European Semi Finals in limbo, so let’s see how those concluded. Arsenal, who had beaten Atlético Madrid 1-0 at the Emirates, travelled to Spain and were thumped 0-4, with legendary forward Sergio Agüero netting two of the goals for Atlético. They faced a derby seeing as Real Madrid had held Man City to a 1-0 home win. All Lucas Volman needed to do was win 1-0 or better at home to set up a fiery Madrid finale. But, for all their dominance, Real couldn’t score in their home match, which ended 0-0, and so Atlético faced City in the Final. Atlético Madrid attacked and attacked but Man City caused a bit of an upset, winning 1-0 thanks to Rubén Ramos’s scrappy goal in the fourth minute. This could be considered atonement for Man City’s unfortunate loss to Lazio in the Europa League Final three years ago, if last year’s Champions League win hadn’t been that. Lens’s Stade Félix Bollaert hosted the Final.

In the Europa League, Brettney Joven’s Leeds held on to their advantage against Inter, denying the Italians an away goal win by equalising through Jake Thompson in the 90+1st minute in Italy. Another late winner settled the other tie, with Karim Benzema netting in the 90+4th minute to give Lyon a 2-1 win at Lazio, sending them through to the Final 3-2 on aggregate. The Final, hosted in Vienna, needed extra time to settle it, but once Leeds went two men down in the 103rd minute, the result was surely going Lyon’s way. David Campos put the French in front in first half stoppage time, before Romanian Viorel Nicolin’s equaliser in minute 54. In extra time, Owen Garvan’s challenge on goalscorer Campos saw him receive a straight red, and José María Begoña’s vehement complaint to the referee saw him get a second yellow and an early bath. Okay then, I’ll leave you with news from Spain, where Ben Cee’s Valencia wrapped up the La Liga title with a draw at Atlético Madrid in the first game of the month. The league title represents the 13th title for the Singaporean Cee, and his fourth at Nuevo Mestalla. Zaragoza finished second, with Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid taking third place. Real’s month started with a 1-1 draw at Barcelona, before victories over Mallorca, Valladolid, Racing and a closing-day draw with Recreativo. Atlético Madrid finished fourth, after Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona dropped some vital points this month. As well as the draw hosting Real Madrid, they lost 0-1 at Betis and drew 3-3 at Valencia. Their victories were confident though, beating Getafe 3-1 and Cádiz 5-0. But after two consecutive fifth-placed finishes, isn’t it time for the Barcelona board to let go? I’m sure they would if they could, but Madridstas earns £175,000p/w, more than his entire backroom staff put together. He still has £9.8M remaining on his contract. On the plus side, he took his side to the Copa del Rey Final this season…

Road to the Final – Copa del Rey

Barcelona’s Spanish Cup run began in the Fourth Round with a tie against Athletic. They drew 1-1 in Basque country but proceeded thanks to a 4-2 home win. They then got a 2-1 victory over Elche in the home leg of their Fifth Round tie, before smashing their opponents 4-0 in the second, away, leg. Recreativo, meanwhile, beat Tim Aubel’s Villarreal in the Fourth Round, despite a 1-1 home draw in the First Leg making it look like they would go out. They won 2-0 away to make the next round, where they beat Racing 2-1 away and proceeded despite a 0-1 home loss. Their Quarter Final match came against Sevilla, whom they beat 2-0 on aggregate, drawing the second match goalless away.

Barcelona’s Quarter Final was against Real Sociedad, whom they beat with ease, 3-0 away and 3-1 at home. This set up a Semi Final against Zaragoza, and despite losing the first leg 1-2, Barca triumphed by winning 2-0 at the Nou Camp to reach the Final. Recreativo lost their first leg at home to Getafe, 1-2, but reached the Final by winning 3-1 away.

Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu hosted the Final, in front of just over 75,000 fans. Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona dominated the match, and were rewarded for that. Marquinhos put them in front in the 34th minute, eventually putting the ball home after he was let in by a sloppy Recreativo defence, who tried to play some sort of offside trap. Five minutes later, the ball was in the net again and Lionel Messi had made it 2-0 with a sneaky shot from the edge of the area that clipped into the net. With 15 minutes to go in the match, Gaël Kakuta, who had been stellar on the wing throughout the game, completed the win when his header bounced off the head of Recreativo goalkeeper Roberto and into the net. Copa del Rey number four for Madridstas, and title number twenty-five.

Just to conclude Spain: Mallorca, Málaga and Sporting were relegated, and so the latter fired their manager James Salter. Real Sociedad, Lorca and Athletic were promoted from the LIGA adelante, although the divison has one more game to play.

Now, all attention turns to Euro 2020 in England!

He’s only gone and done it again;

Lord Weeman, Napoli

has picked up another Manager of the Update award. This month, he lifted his team to third in Serie A, and won the Coppa Italia. Haowan Madridstas was also in contention for winning the Copa del Rey, but couldn’t get his team into the top four, and Lucas Volman had a good month despite a draw which put his team out of the Champions League.

Euro 2020 Preview

England hosts the 2020 European Championship, the 16th edition of the tournament. Let’s take a look at the teams involved and let me give you my picks from each of the four groups.

Group A contains hosts and holders England. As I revealed to you earlier, the Netherlands make up part of England’s tough group. The other parts are Croatia and the Czech Republic, and it’s rather difficult to predict. I think the Netherlands should get through: their record against England alone in the last two years should make them strong enough in this group. I’m actually going to tip the Czech Republic for second place here; Liam Ferguson hasn’t impressed me in his two years in charge of England, and I fear they could fizzle out to a fourth-placed finish. But it’s anyone’s group so I won’t be blushing if I get this one wrong.

Italy are the clear favourites to sweep Group B, since the teams there to stop them are Denmark, Serbia and Wales. Unfortunately, I don’t think Saul Goode’s Wales can make an impact, leaving Serbia and Denmark to fight for the second-placed spot. I think I’m going to have to go for Denmark, who have been a stronger team than Serbia in recent years.

Group C is the home of world champions Spain. They will encounter little difficulty in trying to get out of this group, leaving Norway, Belgium and Greece to compete for the second place. I really like this group, as I feel these teams are pretty equivalent on ability. Unfortunately, I don’t think Belgium will do too well, so they’re my fourth-place picks. Norway should pip Greece to second, although I’d like to see Greece do well here.

The last of our home nations, Scotland, find themselves in Group D. They have France to contend with there, as well as a resilient Turkey side. Poland complete the group, but I don’t think Maciej Skorza’s side will do very well. France should get through; in a tougher group they might slip up but shouldn’t do here, and Scotland would be my picks for second. I wouldn’t pick them in real life, but they are better here than there, especially with their strike partnership of John Fleck and Gavin Brown.

Update 144 and Euro 2020 Report

Years: 12, Months: 144, Days: 4376

12 years into the job and our managers, at least five of them, are still going strong at their original clubs. What would it take for one of them to leave? Perhaps if a juicy international job came up…?

For some reason, Italy played the opener to Euro 2020, and they did indeed open the tournament…with a 1-1 draw with Serbia at New Anfield (which Liverpool don’t play in). The next day, their fellow Group B teams Wales and Denmark were in action, and the Danes took a 2-0 victory over Saul Goode’s side in that match at the City of Manchester Stadium, thanks to two goals from 26-year-old FC København striker Mads Gade. Wales were well and truly outclassed, taking one shot for each Danish goal. Turkey, Scotland, Poland and France all also played on the second day, with the Scots losing 1-2 to Turkey at St James’ Park and France trouncing Poland 4-0 at New Anfield. Two Arda Turan strikes bookended egg-headed 24-year-old striker Sam Law’s goal for Scotland, and the Scots couldn’t level in the last 25 minutes despite Nuri Sahin’s dismissal for Turkey in minute 65. Two penalties helped the French to victory; one was part of Karim Benzema’s brace, and the other was scored by Gabriel Obertan, after Moussa Sissoko opened the scoring in the 17th minute.

Matchday three was the one everyone was waiting for, with hosts and holders England kicking off their campaign. First, though, their Group A teammates Croatia and the Czech Republic were playing each other at (Old) Anfield. Croatia saw their 1-0 lead overturned by a strong Czech period around the hour mark, but they levelled again in minute 65. 26-year-old A.C. Milan attacking midfielder Karel Vagner won the match for the Czech Republic in the 72nd minute. England and the Netherlands kicked off later that night at the Stadium of Light. A brace from Leicester striker Craig Robson wasn’t enough, as Ryan Babel scored a hattrick, including a penalty, which, alongside Toulouse forward Martijn van Deisnen’s 20th-minute goal, gave the Dutch the win, 4-2. Despite taking the lead, England found themselves 1-3 down at half time and had to contend the second half with 10 men after Chris Heslop’s dismissal.

World Champions Spain kicked off next, and they started very strongly against Norway at Old Trafford, with Bojan scoring in the first minute. Piojo made it 2-0 just before the half hour mark, and Bojan made it 3-0 just after the half hour mark. Norway were well and truly outclassed. In the other game, at the Stadium of Light, Greece beat Belgium with Olympiakos striker Sami da Silva scoring the only goal of the game.

So what have our managers been doing during the tournament? Not a lot, it transpires. Tyler Burrows, whom we have discovered loves to spend, brought two players to Udinese this month, both of which were buy-outs of co-ownerships. The defender Alberto Antonioli joined completely from Atalanta for £325k, and Parma central midfielder Antonio Ceccarelli joined for £350k.

We’ll go back to the Euro 2020 action, then. England’s group, Group A, was concluded, and Liam Ferguson’s side managed to qualify. They beat the Czech Republic 3-0 at Anfield, with three real players scoring: Micah Richards, Wayne Rooney and Nathan Delfouneso, before reversing that legendary defeat in Euro 2008 qualifying by beating Croatia 3-2 at Old Trafford, with three non-real players scoring, including Inter’s Matt Hazell, and Leicester’s Craig Robson, who got his third goal of the tournament. The Netherlands left as group winners, beating Croatia 2-1 at the Emirates, where Ryan Babel bagged his fourth goal of the tournament, and drawing 1-1 with the Czechs at Anfield, where Martijn van Deinsen got his second.

Wales never really got their campaign going. After the defeat by Denmark, they went to St James’ Park where they lost 0-1 to Serbia. They remained there for their final match; a goalless draw with Italy, but it wasn’t enough, obviously. Italy had beaten Denmark 3-1 at New Anfield, with Fausto Rossi scoring twice and Giuseppe Rossi once, but the Danes topped the group with a 2-1 win over Serbia. The Serbs went out, and Manchester United’s Danijel Aleksic scored all three of their goals in the tournament.

Spain continued their dominance in Group C. They beat Belgium 2-1, with another goal from Bojan, and Greece 2-0. The Greeks, however, had already amassed six points through 1-0 victories over Belgium and Norway, the latter thanks to a 2nd-minute goal, so qualified second. Norway beat Belgium 3-0 in the final game but it wasn’t enough. And Scotland’s Group D campaign was a bit of a disaster. They crashed to a 1-3 defeat by Poland at New Anfield, with John Fleck scoring their only goal only after they were 0-2 down. Their campaign finally fell apart with defeat by France at the same venue; Karim Benzema put the French ahead in the 64th minute, and the lead was doubled by Yoann Gourcuff nine minutes later. A late goal from Scott Brown was scant consolation. Turkey went through along with France; they lost to the French at St James’ Park thanks to Gabriel Obertan’s 90th minute goal, but a 1-1 draw with Poland, made so by a similarly late goal from Hamburger SV’s Köksal Günes, put them through on goal difference.

England got an extra place in the Europa League thanks to the Fair Play system. It was taken by Brettney Joven’s Leeds, and they kicked off their new Europa League campaign less than a month after their heartbreaking Final in last year’s competition. They travelled to Finland, beating IFK Mariehamn 4-0, and then progressed after a 2-1 home victory. Romanian striker Rãzvan Constantin scored two goals in each of the matches, and Leeds face Sweden’s Halmstad next. Bookies have tipped Leeds to finish 11th in the Premier League this season, which would be a two-place improvement on last year. Unsurprisingly, Lawrence Lazewski’s Man City are favourites to lift the title, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool also predicted to finish in the top four. Crystal Palace, Huddersfield and Queen’s Park Rangers should go down, say the newspapers, which means Super Lampard’s Ipswich can clinch survival. The London Football Daily reports that Arsenal are looking at two players: Real Madrid’s £4.7M-rated Daniel Schwaab, and goalkeeper Rhys Taylor, who sits in Aston Villa’s reserves.

It’s Quarter Final time people, and we’ll start with England’s. They outclassed their opponents Denmark at New Anfield, but only ran out 1-0 winners, with Theo Walcott scoring in the 14th minute. Even Niki Zimling’s dismissal just before the hour mark couldn’t encourage Liam Ferguson’s side to score more goals. Spain were the most prolific in their Quarter Final, beating Turkey by three goals to nil. Barcelona’s Iñigo Fraile doubled his international goal count with a brace, while Sergio Ramos grabbed the other in the game at Old Trafford. Oddly enough, the Spanish didn’t start scoring until after they’d gone a man down due to Ignacio Camacho’s red card.

France had little problem in seeing off Greece in their Quarter Final at St James’ Park. In fact, the Greeks were well and truly outclassed, although France were somehow kept to just two goals. Karim Benzema scored the first, in the 38th minute, and Lassana Diarra made it two just past the hour mark. In the last Quarter Final, at the Emirates, the Netherlands met Italy. Ryan Babel continued his prolific goalscoring, giving the Dutch the lead, but they were pegged back just before the hour mark by Mattia Destro’s goal. Penalties were eventually needed, and it looked like the Netherlands would be going home, since Italy scored their first three penalties but Gianni Zuiverloon missed the Dutch third. However, Destro missed for Italy, before Babel scored, and 27-year-old Napoli winger Vittorio Mattioli also missed for Italy. Wesley Sneijder scored the winning penalty. The Dutch would face France in the Last Four, while England played Spain.

Despite lifting the crown last season, Cool Manager’s Inter are not Scudetto favourites this time around. That distinction goes to their cross-city rivals A.C. Milan, although Inter are tipped to finish second. Critics say that Lord Weeman’s Napoli can also make the top four, alongside Roma, who are tipped to drop two places. Of the new sides to the division, Livorno and Torino are believed to be capable of survival, unlike Reggina. Bologna and Rimini are the other favourites to fall back to Serie B. The papers say that Udinese can climb one place to finish 7th. They also say that Udinese manager Tyler Burrows is chasing Roma’s 21-year-old £3M-rated striker Eros Brunetti, and A.C. Milan’s Patrick van Aanholt, whose contract has just expired. Napoli are supposedly hot on the heels of Portsmouth’s £4.5M-rated defender Diego Viana, and Catania’s 25-year-old attacking midfielder Alessandro Gentili, who would cost £2M.

The Netherlands were the first side to book their place in the Euro 2020 Final after an incisive 2-0 win over France at New Anfield. The French seemed to have the better of the game, but were frustrated by the solid performance of Tim Krul in the Dutch goal and the clinical finishing of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. He got the second of the goals just after the restart from half time, after the Dutch had taken the lead through Schalke defender Martin de Weerdt’s penalty in the 11th minute, given for Timothée Kolodzieczak’s reckless challenge on Nacer Barazite. In the other Semi Final, at the Emirates, World Champions Spain took the lead in the 33rd minute thanks to a penalty from Iñigo Fraile, given for Manchester United midfielder Chris Bailey’s trip of Rubén Ramos. But Liam Ferguson’s England bounced straight back, with Theo Walcott netting an equaliser three minutes later. However, the England star was forced off with an injury just before full time, and wouldn’t contest the additional 30 minutes. Rubén Ramos gave Spain the victory with his 103rd minute strike.

Roll up, roll up, to the Euro 2020 Final. 76,211 Dutch and Spanish fans congregated at Old Trafford for the match between their teams. The only recent meeting (last 10 years) of the teams was in a Friendly in 2018, which Spain won 2-0. The Dutch started strongly, but the Spanish didn’t take too long to warm up either, and it was less than ten minutes into the match when Daniel Aquino put the ball into the net for his team, heading in Sergio Ramos’s insightful cross. Three minutes later, Ramos himself got on the scoresheet, in a virtual reversal; Aquino provided the assist, and Ramos headed it in, although this time Aquino’s cross was a free kick. Stunned, the Netherlands, for all their oh-so-near-almost-promising attacks, couldn’t score, and the match emulated that friendly match. World champions two times in a row, and now European champions. No one could argue with Spain’s dominance.

The golden boot award went to Ryan Babel, of course, with Iñigo Fraile winning the Best Player award. Lee Taylor, Chelsea’s attacking midfielder, was the only British player to get into the dream team, although Craig Robson and Inter’s Matt Hazell featured on the bench. Liam Ferguson kept his job, which pleases me as his performance wasn’t bad, but there were three sacked managers. Turkey, who reached the Quarter Finals, sacked Michael Skibbe, and both Poland and Serbia fired their bosses after falling in the group stages, Maciej Skorza and Slavisa Jokanovic respectively. Martin Jol retired after taking the Netherlands to another European Championship Final. Brian Eastick retired, giving up his role as England u19s manager and as Blackburn manager. The latter role was filled by Aston Villa youth coach Steven Gerrard, who returns to the club where he ended his career.

I hope you all had a great time at Euro 2020 but it’s time to get back to domestic football now. Our five managers have a long and difficult season ahead of them. Tyler Burrows has a long and difficult season after that one, and Lord Weeman has three long and difficult seasons remaining on his contract.

for taking England to the Semi Finals of the European Championship, which is no easy feat, even if it was on home soil. Brettney Joven enjoyed a good win in the Europa League with Leeds, while Tyler Burrows was the best of our managers as he actually did something.

Update 145

We’re into season thirteen with our five caped crusaders, our soccer superheroes. Let’s see how their pre-season preparations are getting along, and what they did during the month of July.

My July wooden spoon award goes to Joan Laporta. I would have called the award something else but I felt it too rude to publish. He get this award for extending the contract of Haowan Madridstas by three years. That’s Haowan Madridstas, the manager who led Barcelona to two consecutive fifth-placed finishes. Madridstas must some very tender parts of Laporta in a vice or something, but if that’s the case, I don’t know why he didn’t barter himself some more money too. In July, Madridstas brought two players to the club, and sold one. Torric joined from La Liga champions Valencia for £19.25M, and 27-year-old Ghanaian goalkeeper Andrew Mensah joined from Benfica for £375k. 31-year-old Emirati defensive midfielder Saleh Ah-Sharji joined Wolfsburg after the German club agreed the £1.4M fee proposed by Madridstas. Barcelona played two friendlies this month, drawing 1-1 at Dortmund and beating Zamora 3-1.

Lucas Volman also managed to wrangle himself a three-year contract extension, although his salary too remained unchanged. He was also involved in a bit of a spending frenzy this month, bringing in three players for a total of over £28.5M. Blackburn’s bald-headed left winger Steve Robertson joined the club for £10M, while right winger Stefano Bianchini joined from Brescia for £2.4M. The biggest transfer was that of Roma’s Mateo Musacchio, who cost Volman £16.25M. He did make a sale, however, and it was back to Roma. Midfielder Francesco Bolzoni joined the Italian club for £12M. Real played the first two games of a tour of Italy this month, beating Sassuolo 3-0 and Torino 3-2. They are tipped to finish 3rd again, after Valencia and Zaragoza. Atlético Madrid are expected to finish 4th again, which would push Barcelona into a third consecutive fifth-placed finish. Lorca are the only one of the new sides expected to fall back down, with Athletic and Real Sociedad believed to be capable of surviving. The papers tip Cádiz and Glenn Hoddle’s Murcia to finish in the bottom three.

Over in England, Tom Smith also got his contract extended, albeit more modestly, by just a year. He brought in three players this month; West Brom goalkeeper Carl Mullen for £1.1M, Napoli goalkeeper Rudy Osti for £3M and Inter left-back Marcelo for £3.2M. Philippe Senderos was the most notable of the eight released players, and he joined Basel. Arsenal’s pre-season tour of Spain got off to a solid start, with a 2-1 win over Numancia and a 2-0 one over La Liga new boys Lorca. All three goalscorers were Brazilian, although Eduardo declared himself for Croatia, and has in fact scored 100 goals in 101 games for his country. Smith will be hoping for a slightly easier title run-in this season, as Chelsea boss Pim Verbeek retired. Former Everton, Roma and Manchester United manager Bryan McGuinness was hired as his successor. McGuinness is notable for a poor 341-day stint at Manchester United, in contrast to his 4 year 8 month spell at Everton. The other two appointments of our managers came in Spain: Maz Armley was chosen as Tim Aubel’s successor at Villarreal, who finished off last season with a caretaker manager, and Betis appointed Lars Tommersen as their boss after the retirement of the previous one. Tommersen had a successful stint at Villarreal but in recent time he dragged Fiorentina down to Serie B.

Speaking of Fiorentina, we’re off over to Italy now. Lord Weeman’s Napoli were very busy in the transfer market this month. As well as the sale of Rudy Osti, whom Napoli had bought from CSKA Moscow a week earlier for £400k, English goalkeeper Dave Boyd joined Galatasaray for £1.2M. Gianni De Santis was another player whom Napoli shipped in-then-out, as the 21-year-old goalkeeper signed from Reggina for £6.5M (I think Napoli already owned half of him) and was sold to Sampdoria for £2.6M. Not the soundest logic by Weeman. Slovakian defender Eugen Nemec signed from Stuttgart for £11.5M, half of Livorno midfielder Rosario Bosi cost Napoli £2M, Ivorian fullback Franck Kone arrived from Cruzeiro for £9.25M, Fiorentina’s Salvatore Sirigu came dirt-cheap at £160k, and the biggest signing was that of Turkish striker Ugur Ates, who had impressed during the European Championship, £14.75M from Leverkusen. Napoli played one game this month, winning 1-0 at Ascoli.

Tyler Burrows also made a few transfers this month, but was nowhere near as prolific as Lord Weeman. A.C. Milan forward Francesco Banti joined Udinese on a free, while left winger Marco Rossini arrived from Bologna for £1.2M and Burrows bought half of 18-year-old Livorno striker Paolo Mattioli. Udinese lost their first pre-season friendly, 2-3 at Bari.

We’ll conclude with a little European action. In the Europa League, Brettney Joven’s Leeds continued their campaign, knocking out Sweden’s Halmstad 5-0 on aggregate in the Second Qualifying Round, before defeating Switzerland’s Bellinzona 7-0 on aggregate in the Third Qualifying Round. Jellybean Man’s Fulham also played in this round, knocking out AaB with two 4-0 wins, as did James Ridley’s Sampdoria, who beat Romanian club FC Otelul Galati 7-0 over the two legs. Sevilla beat Dinamo Tbilisi 13-2, with an 8-2 win in Spain. The Champions League Playoff draw was made this month: Liverpool will face AEK Athens or Grasshopper Zurich, A.C. Milan will face Dinamo Kiev or PSV Eindhoven and Atlético Madrid will face Zenit St. Petersburg or St. Mirren.

The season starts next month, in all three countries. It’s time for Haowan Madridstas to reward the faith put in him by his chairman with a spectacular performance.

gets the award from me as he wrangled himself a new contract. It looks like he’ll be wasting no time with his new lease of life, as he spent nearly £20M on players this month. Other candidates for the award were Lucas Volman, who spent almost £30M and got a more-deserved contract extension, and Lord Weeman, who spent £44.5M in a clear attempt to mount a title challenge this season, although the Napoli boss did make a rather strange loss on one player.

Update 146

We’re up and running on season 2020-21, so let’s see what our five managers got up to in the month of August.

Barcelona managed to haul this year’s Supercopa de España, pipping Ben Cee’s Valencia to the post. Two strikes from Alexis Sánchez gave Barca a 3-1 victory in the home leg, which was followed up by a 2-2 draw at Nuevo Mestalla. The Italian equivalent was won by Inter, who beat Lord Weeman’s Napoli by two goals to one. Bryan McGuinness started his career at Chelsea with silverware in his very first game, as the Pensioners beat Lawrence Lazewski’s Manchester City 2-0 at Wembley. But there was consolation for City in the UEFA Super Cup, which was won on penalties after a 2-2 draw with Lyon. In fact, the Citizens had been leading 2-0 with five minutes to go, but found their easy victory snatched away from them by goals from Héctor Moreno and Abdou Traoré.

We’ll start in Spain, where our two managers have made an encouraging start. Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona won their first game of the season, and it was a strong win considering the opposition; 3-1 at home to Zaragoza. As well as that and the Super Cup win this month, they qualified for the Europa League group stages with a 7-0 aggregate win over Metalurg Donetsk in the Fourth Qualifying Round. Barca made three transfers this month: Japanese forward Naoya Sato joined from Juventus for £19.75M, and both Hatem Ben Arfa and Franco Zuculini left the club, to Arsenal for £3.4M and to Roma for £16.5M respectively. Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid also made a winning start to the season, beating Racing 2-1. Volman made a couple of small sales this month too: goalkeeper Ugo Gabriele returned to Mantova, from whom Real had bought him last season, for £1M, a £400k profit, and 24-year-old central defender Carlos Ortiz joined Castellón for £525k.

Over in England, Tom Smith’s Arsenal have made a very bright start to the season, winning all three games and sitting at the top of the Premier League. They got comprehensive wins away to Blackburn and Hull, before a 4-2 win over Portsmouth, including two goals from Keirrison. Arsenal start their Carling Cup campaign with a difficult tie; at Old Trafford against Leo Dodge’s Manchester United. United, however, made a poor start to the season and currently sit 12th. Chelsea and Sunderland are level on points with Arsenal, and Man City also have a 100% winning record but have played one game fewer due to the European Super Cup. Aside from the Hatem Ben Arfa purchase this month, Smith only sold 21-year-old midfielder Tony Whitbread to bottom-of-the-table Queen’s Park Rangers for £1.7M.

Both of our Italian sides lost their games, unfortunately. However, for Lord Weeman, his fixture reflected that of the Super Cup; a 1-2 loss away to Cool Manager’s Inter. The result was going to be 2-0 before Choco’s 90+2nd minute goal for Weeman’s side. Tyler Burrows’s Udinese also lost 1-2 away, but to Parma, and that too was because of a fairly late goal: Pablo Piatti scored for Burrows’s side in the 87th minute. A Mirko Antenucci brace between the 66th and 69th minutes propelled Parma into the original 2-0 lead. Both sides made transfers this month, with Udinese pulling off quite a coup with the £4.4M signing of Stevan Jovetic from Fiorentina. The Montenegrin is just three goals short of Mirko Vucinic’s 34-goal haul for his country. Italian goalkeeper Luca Anelli also joined Udinese, from Ponferradina for £900k. It is interesting to note that Anelli counts Clark Aitken among his favoured personnel. Burrows made a mint in selling half of 17-year-old goalkeeper Alessandro Carlucci to A.C. Milan for £6.25M, while both of Weeman’s transfers were incoming. 26-year-old centre-back Marco Visconti joined Napoli from Palermo for £8M, while Weeman also bought half of Genoa’s centre-back Aldo Finazzi for £4.4M.

The Champions League draw has seen two of our teams put in the same group: Napoli and Arsenal. They will also face trips to Poland and Ukraine, with Wisla Krakow and Shakhtar Donetsk completing their ensemble. Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid have Stuttgart, Panathanaikos and Club Brugge in their group, while there are plenty of delectable ties on offer. Chelsea meet Celtic and Bayern Munich in their group; Zaragoza play fellow Iberians Porto; Man City, Sporting CP and Roma share a group; Ben Cee takes on his former team as Valencia meet Inter; and Liverpool face last year’s Europa League finalists Lyon, with Ajax thrown into the mix there. Benfica, Rangers, Manchester United, Leicester, Barcelona, Juventus, Fulham, Sampdoria, Lazio, Werder Bremen, Leeds, Galatasaray, Bordeaux and Sevilla are just some of the teams awaiting their fate in the Europa League draw next month.

just edges this one. He took his side to victory in the Europa League 4th Qualifying Round this month, as well as lifting the Supercopa de España and winning his first league game, against Zaragoza. I wanted to give it to Tom Smith for his three league victories, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it!

Another month has passed in the world of football. ‘So what happened?’ I hear you say. Well, you’re about to find out.

We’ll start in England, where Tom Smith’s Arsenal continue to lead the Premier League. In fact, no team has been able to keep toe-to-toe with them and they sit alone on 15 points. They beat West Brom and Man United this month, but lost 1-2 to Bryan McGuinness’s Chelsea at Chelsea Stadium (that’s right). But the Pensioners had trouble of their own this month, losing at Old Trafford and Anfield, so Rafa Benítez’s Liverpool are Arsenal’s closest contenders. The Gunners also travelled to Old Trafford for their Carling Cup Third Round tie, where they beat Leo Dodge’s Manchester United 2-0 with goals from Keirrison and Henri Saivet. Smith’s side face an interesting trip to face Fréderico Canvey’s Everton for the Fourth Round. Holders Chelsea were the biggest casualties of the Third Round, falling on penalties at Upton Park of Championship West Ham. The Hammers’ Reserves player Scott Robertson netted an 87th minute goal that forced extra time, where two more goals were scored before Chelsea were defeated 4-5 from the spot. All the other Premier League sides to lose here; Q.P.R., Leeds, Sunderland, Blackburn, Aston Villa and Leicester, did so to other Premier League sides.

We’re off over to Italy now, where are two sides are now in much more respectable positions. Lord Weeman’s Napoli are 2nd and are leading the assault on Inter’s unbeaten performance so far. They cruised through September, beating Juventus 3-0, Frosinone 2-0, Parma 5-0 and Rimini 6-0. They face Bologna next, the team that happen to be their Coppa Italia First Round opponents. Tyler Burrows’s Udinese are 7th, slap-bang on target, after going unbeaten this month. Three of their four games were victories; against Rimini, Bologna and Atalana, and the fourth was a 1-1 draw at home to Neilio’s Palermo, the only side other than Inter who are unbeaten in the league. A home tie against Frosinone, who are currently lurking just above the relegation zone, is their Coppa Italia First Round match. Those matches will be played in December.

The Champions League group stages kicked off this month, and Napoli and Arsenal met at San Paolo. The Gunners won the match 1-0, and went on to win their second match 3-0 at home to Wisla Krakow. Napoli also won their second match, 2-0 in Ukraine against Shakhtar. Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid top their group after a goalless draw in Greece against Panathanaikos and a 4-1 home win over Club Brugge. They are level with Stuttgart on four points. Bayern Munich, Atlético Madrid, Porto, Sporting CP, Inter and Lyon got their campaigns off to good starts and currently top their groups. Cool Manager’s Inter beat Ben Cee’s Valencia 2-0 in their match at Giuseppe Meazza: two goals in the first six minutes made Cee’s return to his former club quite unpleasurable. In the Europa League, Barcelona won their only game, 8-1 at home to Braga, with an Alexis Sánchez hattrick. Slavia Prague and CSKA Sofia are also in their group. Matches involving our former managers saw Leeds win 1-0 at FC Groningen, Man United draw 1-1 at Sparta Prague, Juventus beat Partizan 3-1 in Serbia, Sampdoria win 1-0 in Romania against FC Vaslui, Rangers beat Lille 2-0 at home and Fulham draw 1-1 at Olympiakos.

Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid lead La Liga, and if he can bring the Spanish title back to the Bernabéu after a two-year absence, he may be worth that contract extension. In September, Real won all but one of their games, beating Sevilla, Real Sociedad and Hércules but drawing goalless at Valladolid. Meanwhile, 4th-placed Barcelona beat Lorca and Racing this month, drew with Sevilla and lost to Valencia. Elsewhere in La Liga, Zaragoza are struggling in 17th place while Cádiz and Lorca have made bright starts to the season, sitting 5th and 9th respectively.

The nations of Europe started their journey along the road to Buenos Aires this month with the first games of their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign. Liam Ferguson’s England travelled to play Andorra, whom they beat 4-0 with two goals from Theo Walcott. Saul Goode’s Wales suffered the reverse of that, a 0-4 drubbing, in their away trip to Serbia. Scotland won 2-1 in Belgium, Northern Ireland drew goalless at home to Romania, and Ireland lost 0-3 in Poland. The biggest victory of the round was Slovakia’s 6-1 win over San Marino.

I find it difficult to give this award.

Lord Weeman, Napoli

just about edges it for me. He won five of his six games this month, including a 5-0 win over Parma and a 6-0 one at Rimini. However, Napoli came unstuck in a home game against Arsenal. The award could have easily gone to Tom Smith, who guided Arsenal to the same five wins and one loss, and who lost out simply because of those 5- and 6-0 victories, or Lucas Volman, who had a good month but looked to be just about getting through at times. Tyler Burrows and Haowan Madridstas also did well, although the latter lost an important game to Valencia. Now you see why I found it difficult to give this award.

Update 148

The managers are teetering on the edge of their 4500th day in management at their clubs, but before they can achieve that, you’re going to have to read the October report from me.

Said report commences in Spain, where Atlético Madrid lead La Liga. Their rivals, Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid, sit two points further back in 2nd. In October, Real won their first three games, beating Tenerife, Getafe and Tim Aubel’s Villarreal. They also beat Real Unión 3-0 in the Copa del Rey Fourth Round First Leg, but continued their indifferent Champions League campaign with a 1-4 defeat in Germany against Stuttgart. Their last game of the month was against Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona, who had beaten Real Sociedad and Tenerife that month, but lost to Hércules. Barca also got two 2-0 victories in the Europa League, over CSKA Sofia and Slavia Prague, but drew 1-1 at Osasuna in their Spanish Cup tie. The match between the two sides, at the Nou Camp, swung decisively in Barcelona’s favour as they took a 4-0 lead within half an hour, and ended up winning 5-0 in what was a huge blow to Real’s title campaign. Barca are currently 3rd.

Over in Italy, our two sides are doing very well. Lord Weeman’s Napoli are 2nd and are chasing down Serie A leaders Inter. In October, they beat Bologna, Palermo, Atalanta and Lazio on their way to an unbeaten month, which ended with a goalless draw at home to James Ridley’s Sampdoria. Napoli also won 1-0 in Poland against Wisla Krakow in the Champions League. Tyler Burrows’s Udinese are three points behind Napoli and in 3rd place, but would draw level if they were to win their game in hand. This month, the Andorran manager guided his team to victory in all four of their games; over Lazio, Sampdoria, Torino, and, most importantly, A.C. Milan. New signing Stevan Jovetic scored the winner in that last game, and, at his current strike rate, after eight games, has cost his club £1.5M a goal. That figure should diminish substantially as the season goes on.

In England, Tom Smith’s Arsenal have been cast off the top spot by a rampant Manchester City. This month, Lawrence Lazewski’s team won all their games, with big victories coming at home to relegation fodder Huddersfield and sixth-placed Portsmouth. As for Arsenal, they beat Crystal Palace and Sunderland but drew at Anfield, not bad, and lost at home to Newcastle, bad. Scottish striker Jamie Mitchell scored a brace for Arnold J. Rimmer’s Magpies during their trip to the Emirates. On the plus side, Arsenal reversed the 1-3 loss against Shakhtar, winning 3-1 in Ukraine to put them well and truly top of their Champions League group. Leeds and Liverpool are the other two sides in the top four of the Premier League, while Fréderico Canvey’s Everton have opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Championship. His former team Stoke sacked manager Manuel Jiménez Jiménez this month and appointed former Reggina, Sporting and Torino manager James Salter, who becomes the third of our managers to complete the hattrick, managing in each of our countries.

More World Cup qualifying for you now: Liam Ferguson’s England won both their games this month by three-goal margins, netting four at Wembley against Norway, with a Theo Walcott hattrick, and keeping a clean sheet during a trip to Moldova, with Walcott grabbing another couple of goals. The 31-year-old Arsenal man currently tops the European qualification’s goalscoring chart on seven goals, but has to be wary of Wales’ Ched Evans, the Czech Republic’s Martin Fenin, Albania’s Edgar Cani and Russia’s 28-year-old Zenit striker Denis Bochkov, who have each scored five. Saul Goode’s Wales netted huge wins in their games against Georgia and the Faroe Islands, which were 4-0 and 5-0 victories respectively. Needless to say, Evans grabbed five goals in the two games. Scotland lost both their games, at home to Macedonia and away to France; Northern Ireland won in Bulgaria and Ireland beat Liechtenstein and got a good home win over the Czech Republic. England, Spain, Ukraine, Portugal, the Netherlands, Russia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, FYR Macedonia and Romania currently top the groups, which means some big teams are struggling to put points on the board.

Update 149

Our managers completed their 4500th day at one club this month, with another milestone lurking on the horizon: the 150 month one. Still, let’s see what happened in November 2020.

Tom Smith’s Arsenal are at the head of the English Premier League, and are pushing back Manchester City with just a point separating the two sides. Smith’s side got off to a very good start in the league this month, beating Ipswich 4-0, Leeds 3-0 and Aston Villa 5-0, before their spirits were dampened at Craven Cottage with a 1-1 draw. They host Man City in their next game in a real six-pointer, and their Carling Cup Fourth Round trip to Fréderico Canvey’s Everton did not go as planned, when the Toffees proceeded on penalties following a 0-0 draw. Everton will go on to face a tie at the City of Manchester Stadium (Lawrence Lazewski’s side are cropping up everywhere), while the other Quarter Finals see Crystal Palace host Portsmouth, Reading host Tottenham and Liverpool face West Ham. In other England news, two managers jumped ship to Italy this month. Leo Dodge left Manchester United to replace Pierluigi Casiraghi at Roma, so Casiraghi took the seat at Old Trafford. A vacancy opened at Parma, so Super Lampard left Ipswich to go back to Italy. George Burley was appointed at Portman Road in Lampard’s place.

It seems logical to go over to Italy now, as that’s what our England-based managers are doing. Cool Manager’s Inter lead Serie A, but Lord Weeman’s Napoli are level with them on points and have a vastly superior goal difference. In November, Napoli bounced back from defeat at A.C. Milan to beat Torino, Reggina and Udinese. The last of those teams now sits in 5th, having won once, drawn three times and lost just that one game this month.

With just one group stage game to be played in the Champions League, most of the teams that will secure qualification to the next round have done so already. In Group D, Arsenal and Napoli both won their first game this month, beating Shakhtar 4-0 and Wisla 6-0 respectively, and despite at the Emirates, Lord Weeman’s Napoli qualified alongside Arsenal. Real Madrid reversed the 1-4 drubbing they had suffered at Stuttgart, beating the German team by the same scoreline, before trouncing Panathanaikos 7-0, so they qualified with Stuttgart. Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Atlético Madrid, Porto, Zaragoza, Man City, Inter, Valencia, Liverpool and Lyon also booked their placed in the Last 16. Only one game was played in the Europa League this month: in Barcelona’s group, both fixtures ended 0-0, so the Catalan team qualify for the next round. Benfica, Racing, Leeds, Juventus, Sampdoria, Werder Bremen, A.C. Milan and Sevilla are all guaranteed to be featuring in the next round.

We’ll conclude the report in Spain, where Atlético Madrid and their cross-city rivals Real are battling it out for the title. Real Madrid, who are managed by £20M-a-year manager Lucas Volman, won all their games this month, beating Recreativo, Cádiz and Betis all 4-0, and Athletic 4-3. They also won 5-0 at home to Real Unión in the Copa del Rey Fourth Round, so they proceed to the Fifth Round, where they meet Athletic, 8-0 on aggregate. Yes, it was a good month, but whether that justifies a salary 800 times that of the average person is a different question. Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona and Ben Cee’s Valencia are battling it out for third place. Barca continued their generally poor form this month, drawing with Valladolid and losing to Getafe before beating Villarreal and Recreativo. A Marquinhos hattrick helped them to the win over Maz Armley’s Villarreal, which was a 6-0 victory. Armley is currently Very Insecure. Madridstas booked passage for his team to the Copa del Rey Fifth Round with a 2-0 win over Osasuna which sees them through 3-1 on aggregate. Elche await, and the double-legged tie means Barcelona will face three consecutive games against Elche.

With the grand old sesquicentenary coming up (okay, it’s not years but months), I’ll leave you to prepare your celebrations.

Manager of the Update

It’s clear that this month’s winner is;

Lucas Volman, Real Madrid

after his side tonked away to seven victories this month, with five clean sheets. This all comes after a 0-5 loss to Barcelona at the end of last month; talk about a comeback! Tom Smith’s Arsenal also had a good month, winning five of their seven games, and even if they hadn’t been knocked out of the Carling Cup at Everton, there was no way they would have been able to match Real Madrid this month.

Happy 150th update! I'm moving home tomorrow, so obviously will be busy in the impending weeks. Expect updates to be a bit more erratic.

Update 150

Years: 12, Months: 150, Days: 4560

Our five managers reached their 150th month in charge of the same club this month, and, as if to celebrate, the Premier League launched fireworks of sackings, with many managers there losing their jobs. There were also sackings elsewhere, although our five will surely be relieved to know that they were not among them.

We’ll start in Spain, where the title race is still as close as ever. Atlético Madrid lead the way, and they gained two points on their cross-city rivals Real this month, after Lucas Volman’s team drew at Elche. The match between the two teams that opened the month was also a draw, and both draws saw no goals. Real did end the month with a 3-0 win over Glenn Hoddle’s Murcia however, and beat Club Brugge 2-0 in the Europa League. Ben Cee’s Valencia are third, with Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona three points further back in fourth place. In December, Barcelona bagged two 4-2 wins, over Cádiz and Athletic, but they were three goals short when they lost 1-2 to Betis. They beat CSKA Sofia and Slavia Prague in the Europa League. In other La Liga news, bottom-placed Real Sociedad went out with the old and in with the new this month as they fired and hired managers.

In Italy too the title race is close, with Lord Weeman’s Napoli pushing Cool Manager’s Inter all the way to the finish line, which is not yet in sight. The two teams are level on 43 points, after Napoli beat Livorno, Brescia and Mantova this month. Their nearest opponents, A.C. Milan, are third and seven points further back. Meanwhile, Tyler Burrows’s Udinese are continuing their good season, sitting 5th after one of each result this month, including a 3-1 win over Leo Dodge’s Roma. Udinese powered through their Coppa Italia First Round match with a 3-0 win over Frosinone, a scoreline that was matched by Napoli, who beat Bologna. Partenopei also got that result against Shakhtar in the Champions League. In the Italian Cup Quarter Finals, Udinese travel to Mikael Schøler’s Juventus, while Napoli travel to James Ridley’s Sampdoria. Italy, ever a haven for managers, saw no sackings this month.

A new horse has emerged in the race for the Premier League, although it is not one that should be too surprising. However, I applaud Bryan McGuinness’s apparent turnaround of fortunes at Chelsea, as not too long ago he was looking at the door. They sit top, and are a point clear of Tom Smith’s Arsenal, and two points clear of third-placed Liverpool. Arsenal’s pursuit of the title took big blows early on this month with a 0-1 defeat at home to Lawrence Lazewski’s Man City and a 2-4 loss at Tottenham. They beat Huddersfield, Q.P.R. and Hull this month, and drew with Leicester, but the two opening games were the most harmful, particularly in the fans’ eyes. They won their final Champions League group stage match 4-0 in Poland against Wisla Krakow. For a bit of context; Leicester, who finished 5th last year, Huddersfield and Q.P.R. are in the relegation zone, with the Rs yet to get into double figures with points. Fréderico Canvey’s Everton lead the Championship, although they are level on 55 points with Steve Bruce’s West Ham.

Now, for those sackings. Aston Villa were the first English side to can their manager this month, and Randy Lerner ended the contract of Frank Lampard with the club 16th, eight places below expectations. Robert Boyle was appointed as Lampard’s successor, although Boyle retains his job with England u21s. His appointment was announced just after that of Hull’s Alan Irvine at Leicester, who had sacked Javier Manjarín just after Villa had sacked Lampard. Wolves sacked their manager and hired Nottingham Forest’s, who hired Numancia’s. Hull sought the services of former Torino, Charlton, Bolton, Besiktas and Everton boss dafuge, and they got those services, so they’ll be going down this season. dafuge has only been relegated twice at his five clubs, although he was sacked from Torino before they did go down, left Bolton after getting them promoted (they went down) and he couldn’t have been relegated at Besiktas. Finally, Watford sacked Sol Campbell and hired Peterborough’s Jonathan Woodgate.

Now it’s time to talk cup draws. I’ve already told you some of the Italian and Spanish cup draws; those with our teams, but what about the FA Cup and the European competitions? There’s also the Carling Cup, which I’ll start with: Arsenal’s conquerors Everton lost heavily at Man City, who will face Tottenham in the Semi Final. Liverpool will play Crystal Palace. In the FA Cup Third Round, Tom Smith’s Arsenal won’t have to go too far, travelling to Jonathan Woodgate’s Watford. Fulham play Tottenham in my pick of the round, while two other all-Premier League fixtures see Liverpool host West Brom and Chelsea host Ipswich. In the Champions League, Arsenal play Porto, Napoli play holders Man City, and Real Madrid play last year’s Europa League winners Lyon. Other notable ties see Chelsea against Atlético Madrid, Valencia against Bayern Munich and Leo Dodge’s Roma playing Liverpool. Barcelona’s Europa League Last 32 tie comes against Jellybean Man’s Fulham, with Schalke or last year’s runners-up Leeds in the next round. A.C. Milan playing Sporting CP is probably the biggest tie of the round, although as a Fulham fan I’d choose Fulham v Barcelona any day.

All that delectable football is to look forward to then! In addition, the transfer window opens and the managers begin the mad, mad dash to the finish line.

It’s a new year, that of 2021, so what have our managers been up to during the month of January?

Unfortunately, it’s been a very poor month for Napoli, who have fallen five points behind Serie A leaders Inter and are now third, also behind A.C. Milan. Lord Weeman’s side drew two big games this month: at Roma and at home to Inter, but lost away to Juventus. Victories came over Genoa and Frosinone, but it wasn’t enough, and the title dreams may need to be put away for another day. However, the Coppa Italia dreams are still on track after a 1-0 victory at Sampdoria in the Quarter Final. Udinese also won their match, on penalties at Juventus, and the two will meet in their Semi Final, while Roma play Inter. Tyler Burrows’s Udinese team are going solidly in Serie A, still sitting fifth after wins over Frosinone, Rimini and Bologna this month. They drew with Parma, and also lost their league game at Delle Alpi.

As for transfers, Burrows continued his busying in the transfer market, bringing in three players and shipping out two. He signed Michele Camporese from Fenerbahçe for £850k, Deniz Naki from Fulham for £5.25M, and Roma’s Tiago Luís for £2.2M. Half of talented centreback Vincenzo Calzavara was bought by A.C. Milan for £7.5M, while goalkeeper Luca Anelli joined Atalanta for £875k. Lord Weeman was also busy this month, signing Wolfsburg’s Portuguese wonderkid Hélder Trindade for £14.25M. Trindade is 20, born on April Fool’s Day, plays on the left wing or in central midfield, and has four caps for his country. A whole host of former big names left Napoli: Nikola Saric to Atalanta for £3.3M, Éder to Grêmio for £150k and Albin Ekdal to Neilio’s Palermo for £10.75M.

We’ll hop over to England now, where Tom Smith’s Arsenal are back on top of the Premier League. The advantage swung strongly in Arsenal’s favour this month when they won all four games in the league, beating Portsmouth, Blackburn, West Brom and finally, with the aid of a 90th minute own goal, title chasers Chelsea. The Gunners also successfully navigated through two rounds of the FA Cup, beating Watford 5-0 at Vicarage Road and Stoke 1-0 at the Britannia Stadium. A home tie with turbulent Sheffield Wednesday awaits. Smith, obviously keen to bring the title back to the Emirates after a three-year absence, dipped into his transfer kitty this month, signing A.C. Milan’s ‘cultured’ Croatian attacking midfielder Dinko Leovac for £27.5M, and Aston Villa’s crazy-haired Libyan central midfielder Redouane Bacha for £30M. If that’s not ambitious, I don’t know what is. Chelsea are second, followed by Leeds, Man City, Liverpool and then Portsmouth. Man City beat Tottenham and Liverpool beat Crystal Palace in the Carling Cup Semi Final, so those two will meet at Wembley on February 28th.

In Spain, January may well be remembered as the month Real Madrid’s title hopes withered away. Despite challenging strongly at this point last month, their cross-city rivals Atlético have run away, and are now seven points clear at the top. Lucas Volman’s Real side beat Lorca, Racing and Sevilla this month, but drew with Valencia and lost to Zaragoza. On the plus side, two rounds of the Copa del Rey were successfully hurdled: a 3-0 win over Athletic allowed progress despite a 1-3 defeat in the second leg, and a 4-1 aggregate win over Getafe was achieved with victories both home and away. Real made three small transfers this month, bringing in Inter’s Maor Bozaglo for £2M and selling Eros Corradini to Roma for £500k and right winger Stefano Bianchini to Parma for £2.4M.

Barcelona had a similar troubled time this month. Whereas last month they were neck-and-neck with third-placed Valencia, a similar seven-point lead has emerged for Ben Cee’s team. Now, Barcelona must compete with Zaragoza to avoid a third consecutive fifth-placed finish. Barca did actually beat Zaragoza this month, 3-2 away, but lost to Atlético Madrid and Murcia. The other games were a win over Elche and a 2-2 draw at home to Valencia, a result which matched Real Madrid’s in the same fixture. Barcelona won’t be retaining the Copa del Rey: despite beating Elche 3-1 on aggregate, they lost 1-2 in total to Atlético Madrid. They only made one transfer move, and that was loaning out a 16-year-old to small team Reus. Ben Cee’s Valencia were by far the busiest of the Spanish teams in the transfer window: the Singaporean brought in seven players this month for a total of £91M, while selling my personal favourite Australian striker Matty Barton to Aston Villa for £5M. In other Spain news, Maz Armley was sacked from his post at Villarreal after 180 days in charge. It’s a stark difference from his reign at Sevilla, which, lasting 2504 days, was 14 times longer. Marcos Alonso, who was sacked from then-bottom-placed Real Sociedad earlier in the season (Real Sociedad are currently 19th, ahead of Villarreal) became the new boss.

So what awaits next month? European football resumes with both legs of the Europa League Last 32, and one leg of the Champions League Last 16. There are three Premier League games, four Serie A matches and four La Liga fixtures. The Carling Cup Final, FA Cup Fifth Round and Copa del Rey Semi Final First Leg all also take place. Plenty to look forward to, and look forward we shall!

Things are looking good for Arsenal, who top the Premier League, and it is obvious that Smith intends his team to stay in that first-placed position. Update 152

With another month under their belts, the managers are continuing to blaze a trail into the future. Let’s see how they did in February, starting in Spain.

It would require one hell of a choke for Atlético Madrid to lose the title from here. They sit nine points clear of second-placed Real Madrid with 13 games to play, although they do count among their future opponents Zaragoza, Valencia, Barcelona and Real Madrid themselves. Still, one would expect Atlético to lock down the title this season. In February, Lucas Volman’s Real side did well in the league, beating Real Sociedad, Valladolid and Hércules, and drawing with Tenerife. They didn’t do so well in cups, losing 0-2 at Valencia in the first leg of their Copa del Rey Semi-Final, and losing 1-2 at Lyon in the Champions League, which resumed this month. Meanwhile, Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona have slipped to fifth and, if previous seasons are anything to go on, the gap separating them and Champions League qualification will only get wider. This month, they beat Lorca, Racing and Real Sociedad in La Liga, before tumbling to defeat at Sevilla. They knocked Jellybean Man’s Fulham out of the Europa League with a 3-2 aggregate victory, and face another English side, Brettney Joven’s Leeds, next.

This month and the next ones look like they will just be catch-up missions for Lord Weeman’s Napoli, after a poor January saw them plummet from the Serie A chase with Inter. The Milan club are managed by Englishman Cool Manager, who pockets £170,000 each week, are four points ahead of Napoli and of their rivals A.C. Milan. Napoli’s quest to regain the top spot went well in February, with three wins and a draw. Parma and Rimini were both beaten 3-0, Palermo 2-1, while the match at Bologna ended goalless. Their Champions League Last 16 first leg tie at home to Lawrence Lazewski’s defending champions Man City went well: Napoli won 1-0. Meanwhile, Tyler Burrows’s Udinese are 7th after a poor month. To be fair, their results were balanced: two wins and two losses, but they sunk a couple of places regardless.

We’ll finish in England, where Tom Smith’s Arsenal are steaming away in pursuit of the Premier League title. They netted three 2-0 wins this month, against Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Newcastle, and drew goalless at Old Trafford, which isn’t the fortress it used to be. Arsenal also steered through the FA Cup 5th Round with a 3-1 victory at home to Sheffield Wednesday, and will be treated to a home match with Blackburn in the Quarter Finals. The other 6th Round ties see Sunderland hosting Liverpool, Chelsea hosting Portsmouth, and Championship Wolves hosting Leeds. Arsenal’s Champions League game this month ended positively: it was a 2-2 draw in Portugal against Porto, which means progress into the Last Eight is looking likely. Meanwhile, Lawrence Lazewski’s Man City hauled the Carling Cup with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Wembley. The scores were level at 90 minutes, although Liverpool were a man down, but central defender Breno scored the winner for City, who missed their chance to go 3-1 up in the 103rd minute when Czech fullback Roman Cerny fluffed his penalty.

It’s coming to crunch time, and some losses here could define the season. Arsenal need to stave off Chelsea to get the Premier League title, Napoli are in pursuit of Serie A, and Udinese need to bag 7th to stop their season falling to pieces. Real Madrid still harbour hopes of the La Liga crown, and Barcelona surely need to get into the Champions League this season or things will be going very wrong. Stay tuned!

takes it this month based on statistics: he won four games out of five (drawing the fifth), while Tom Smith won four games out of six (drawing the other two). Regardless, they both gave good performances this month. Haowan Madridstas almost did rather well before his month finished so poorly against Sevilla.

The season is creeping into its finishing stages now. Let’s see how our five managers, the most durable of our original sixty, peformed in March 2021.

With as many games to be played, Tom Smith’s Arsenal lead the Premier League by eight points. Bryan McGuinness’s Chelsea are in keen pursuit, and Lawrence Lazewski’s third-placed Manchester City are also ready to pounce. In March, Arsenal played three games, netting three goals in away ties with Ipswich and Aston Villa but being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Sunderland. The Gunners booked an FA Cup Semi Final place with a 2-0 home win over Blackburn in the Sixth Round, and it is Brettney Joven’s Leeds, who reached last year’s Europa League Final, who stand in their way, while Liverpool meet Chelsea in the other Semi Final.

Only two sets of league games were played in Spain this month, and so Atlético Madrid are still cruising at the top of La Liga. They tallied four points from their games, a total that was matched by Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid, after they beat Getafe but drew with Barcelona this month. I’ve decided not to rule out Real’s title chances just yet; they overcame two deficits to win this month, beating Valencia 3-0 in the Copa del Rey Semi Final second leg to win 3-2 on aggregate, and beating Lyon 3-1 in the Champions League Last 16 second leg to win 4-3 on aggregate. I’d be happy, however, to categorically say that Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona won’t finish in the top four this season. Their poor form continued this month, with a home draw against Hércules following the 2-2 one at Real Madrid.

As you may have guessed, the Champions League Last 16 second legs took place this month. Obviously Real Madrid got themselves through, but what of our other sides? Tom Smith’s Arsenal sealed a convincing 5-0 win at the Emirates to beat Porto 7-2 on aggregate, and the happiness was redoubled when Chelsea crashed out, drawing 0-0 in Spain against Atlético Madrid, thus being knocked out 2-2 on away goals. In fact, Arsenal are the only English side left standing, with Liverpool falling 3-5 on aggregate to Leo Dodge’s Roma, and Lord Weeman’s Napoli holding Man City to a 3-2 win at the City of Manchester Stadium and thus knocking the Champions League holders out on away goals. Cool Manager’s Inter also won on away goals, having drawn 2-2 in the Netherlands and goalless at home to AZ Alkmaar.

In the two matches between Spanish and German sides, Bayern Munich knocked out Ben Cee’s Valencia 2-0 on aggregate but Zaragoza beat Stuttgart 6-2. Two of our sides meet in the Quarter Finals, as Napoli take on Real Madrid, while Arsenal will face Roma. Atlético Madrid play Bayern Munich and Inter play Zaragoza. In the Europa League, Barcelona came through their Last 16 tie with Leeds, drawing 2-2 at Elland Road and winning 3-0 at home. They face Bob Bradley’s Celtic in the Quarter Finals, while we have two managers left in: James Ridley’s Sampdoria face Barca’s groupmates Braga, and Mikael Schøler’s Juventus face Sevilla. But the tie of the round is A.C. Milan against Manchester United.

I suppose the logical place to head to next is Italy, so I will do just that. We’ll start with Tyler Burrows at Udinese, although he’ll wish we hadn’t, because they slumped to 9th place after the two games they played this month. Like last month, they had a 50% win rate, but it just wasn’t good enough, and a defeat to A.C. Milan set them back so that a 3-0 win over Torio wouldn’t recover things. However, they are level with Mantova and Lazio, who both sit ahead of them, and sixth-placed Roma are just a point away. Even Champions League qualification is only seven points away, although Burrows should be focused on getting his team into the Europa League. As for Lord Weeman’s Napoli, they didn’t have a great month in terms of title-chasing, beating Lazio and Sampdoria but fell to a twisted defeat at Atalanta, with Nikola Saric, who Weeman sold to bermybhoy’s former club in January, netting a brace for the home team and pretty much sealing the 2-1 win single-handedly.

Weeman and Burrows met for the 26th time this month when Udinese hosted Napoli in the first leg of their Coppa Italia Semi Final, which was their first ever meeting outside Serie A. Napoli have reached the Final three times in the last five years, lifting the cup twice, and look to get themselves there again, as they won 3-0 in what was a disastrous game for Tyler Burrows. European qualification are the two words on the lips of every Udinese fan right now, although I’ll grant that they speak Italian. Elsewhere in Italy, Theo Stigarakis’s 11-month tenure at Fiorentina ended this month after he was sacked. He leaves the side 3rd in Serie B, which was really not acceptable.

European nations continued their steps towards Argentina this month with another game in the World Cup qualifying series. Liam Ferguson’s England beat Turkey 3-1 and now top their group, but Saul Goode’s Wales lost 1-2 at home to Spain, with Barcelona’s prolific forward Daniel Aquino netting both Spanish goals. Scotland put in a spirited performance to beat Armenia 5-1 at Celtic Park, while both Ireland and Northern Ireland drew; 2-2 in Bosnia and 1-1 at home to Belarus respectively. So far, hosts Argentina remain the only side qualified for the tournament next summer, although Brazil have won every single qualifying game, and Australia and China have both booked places in the Asian Playoff system. Whoever wins through that system, which probably won’t be either of those two as they’ll likely ensure automatic qualification, will face Oceania’s entrant New Zealand.

There were some good performances this month, but;

Lucas Volman , Real Madrid

was the best performer in my opinion. He only played two league games, drawing one of them against Barcelona, but he inspired two comebacks in his team and so made his way into a Copa del Rey Final and a Champions League Quarter Final. Tom Smith had a very good month, inching closer to the Premier League title and winning in the cups, and Lord Weeman gets a mention despite a poor league defeat to Atalanta: he won 3-0 at Udinese to virtually guarantee the Coppa Italia Final and held Champions League holders Man City to a narrow win to thus book Napoli’s first ever Champions League Quarter Final.

Okay, folks, the end of the season is almost upon us and some very exciting things have been happening in April. Let’s take a look at them all!

Just two more games should seal the title for Atlético Madrid, who boast a commendable nine-point lead at the top of La Liga. Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid are second, but looked to have lost the title race this month after a 0-3 loss at their cross-city rivals. They won all their other games, beating Cádiz, Athletic, Betis, Elche and Villarreal, but the derby defeat will surely be the game that sticks in the fans’ minds. They face a Copa del Rey Final against the league leaders next month, and that will be the perfect chance to either avenge their league campaign, or to have their season blown to smithereens. Elsewhere in La Liga, Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona remain fifth, but made promising moves towards a top four finish this month. They achieved narrow victories over Getafe, Recreativo, Cádiz and Villarreal, and pounded Betis 6-0 at the end of the month. A home tie against Atlético Madrid remains the most difficult in their calendar, while Zaragoza, three points ahead in fourth, face a trip to Real next month.

I must say, I found this month’s Champions League action very exciting. We’ll start with Tom Smith’s Arsenal, who won 2-1 at home to Roma, thanks to an own goal in the 90+2nd minute, and progressed to the Semi Finals after a 1-1 draw in Italy. Atlético Madrid looked to have good measure of their opponents Bayern Munich, beating the Germans 4-1 at home, but they actually limped out on away goals when they lost 0-3 at the Allianz-Arena. Cool Manager’s Inter left the competition at this point too, drawing 1-1 at home to Zaragoza and being knocked out in extra time in the away leg. And the big tie: Napoli versus Real Madrid. In the first leg in Italy, Lord Weeman’s side recorded a comfortable 2-0 victory thanks to a brace from Argentine striker Federico Laurito. Over in Spain, Sergio Ramos put Real in front in the 14th minute, and Lucas Volman’s team battered and battered the Napoli defence, but couldn’t get a goal to level the tie. Napoli were in the Semi Finals! There, they faced Tom Smith’s Arsenal, and it looks like the Italians will be heading for the Final as they romped to a 4-1 victory at home, with a Lauri Dalla Valle hattrick. However, we all saw what happened to Atlético Madrid, and Smith will be keen to win the tie. Bayern Munich won 1-0 at Zaragoza in the other Semi Final, with former Udinese player Juan Bruno missing a penalty for the home side.

We’ll head over to England now, where the biggest surprise is that dafuge’s Hull have definitely avoided relegation! And just in time too, as matches with Chelsea and Man United end the season. With three games to play, Huddersfield and Q.P.R. have been relegated, while West Brom are likely to join them, since 17th-placed Leicester are seven points ahead of the Baggies. Fréderico Canvey’s Everton will be replacing one of these teams; they guaranteed promotion this month, with West Ham and Middlesbrough in contention for the second automatic promotion spot and Wigan, Southampton, Bolton, Sheffield Wednesday and Northampton chasing the playoffs. Anyway, Portuguese manager Tom Smith sealed his 19th trophy this month by lifting the Premier League with Arsenal. Man City’s defeat by Liverpool gave the Gunners the title, although they had it coming their way on their own merits, beating Fulham and Leeds this month, winning 3-2 in the North London derby and drawing 2-2 at Eastlands to not let City gain any ground at all. Another piece of silverware could be just around the corner after a 1-0 win over Leeds in the FA Cup Semi Final put them into the gold medal match. There, they’ll face Liverpool, who beat Chelsea by the same scoreline.

April has been a successful month in the Europa League for our managers. Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona grabbed a 1-1 draw at Celtic with a goal a minute from time, and won the tie with a 3-1 home victory. James Ridley’s Sampdoria knocked out Braga with a 3-0 win in Portugal and a 2-1 one in Italy, and Mikael Schøler’s Juventus’ 3-1 home victory was enough for progression despite a 0-1 loss away to Sevilla in the second leg. Manchester United triumphed 4-3 against A.C. Milan in the other Quarter Final, and they won the first leg of their Semi Final, at home to Sampdoria, 2-0. Barcelona travelled to play Juventus, and got a 1-1 draw that leaves them hopeful of reaching the Final.

Now it’s over to Italy to conclude this report. Lord Weeman’s Napoli continue their pursuit of the Scudetto, and now sit just five points behind leaders Inter with a game in hand. After they level up, both teams have four matches to play, but Inter look to have an easy run-in, while Napoli count A.C. Milan and Roma among their opponents to come. In April, Weeman’s side lost vital ground in the pursuit when they suffered a 1-2 defeat away to Tyler Burrows’s Udinese. They achieved comfortable wins in their other games, 4-0 over Reggina and 3-0 over both Torino and Livorno, and they got their revenge on Udinese by winning 2-0 at home in the Coppa Italia second leg, reaching the Final 5-0 on aggregate. Roma await, after Leo Dodge’s side knocked out Inter 3-1 on aggregate. As for Udinese’s month in the league, they didn’t do spectacularly and still sit ninth. Although they beat Napoli, and also Livorno, they drew goalless at Reggina, Brescia and Roma, and lost 0-3 in a trip to face Mantova. Inter and Juventus await next month, but Udinese are just four points behind Mikael Schøler’s fourth-placed side.

I must say that in general, the month has been very good for our managers. But the season isn’t yet over! Napoli and Arsenal remain gripped in battle in their Champions League Semi Final, while the Italians are still in pursuit of the Serie A title. Udinese need to improve rapidly to secure European football. Real Madrid have an important cup final to come, and Barcelona will be aiming for Europa League glory. The best days are yet to come…

Manager of the Update

It’s been an excellent month for our managers and so it isn’t easy to pick a winner. I think I’m tipping towards;

Lord Weeman, Napoli

after his excellent exploits in the Champions League. This is fresh ground for Napoli, but he has done brilliantly, beating Real Madrid and notching up a huge win over Arsenal. Incidentally, Tom Smith was also in the running this month, after securing the Premier League and, like Weeman, reaching his domestic cup final. Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona did well, but couldn’t reach the glamorous heights of the others, and Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid put in a solid month, but a loss to their rivals cost them, and both Volman and Smith lost out on this award as Weeman’s Napoli defeated both of their teams.
