Rise of the Dragon - The Welsh SuperLeague

The Plotline

YES!

The resounding shout came from the polling booths. (Not literally of course, that would be silly.) The people of Wales had voted resoundably for independence from Britain in referendum. The controversial British Prime Minister James Red of the Drudgery party agreed. After a few days of turmoil famous rain miner Russell L. Nation rose to power. Standing in his new house in Roald Dahl Plass, Nation decided he needed to raise Wales’s profile. Being a football fan, he invited eighteen rich Welsh businessmen into the Plass building, and offered them millions of his own personal fortune to set up 18 football clubs, promising top-class stadiums.

They took the money and left. Some stayed in Cardiff. Some travelled along the M4 to nearby Swansea. And others travelled, taking their clubs as far-afield as Holyhead, Llandrindod Wells and Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Then one of them noticed a slinght snag in Nation's plans, and went to the Plass,

“But Mr. Nation.” he told him, “We have no players!”

Mr Nation thought for a minute and set his Second-in-command Terry Davies to Zürich. After a lengthy discussion with Sepp Blatter involving bulging bags with dollar signs on them, Mr Davies returned to Cardiff with the promise that the clubs would be allowed any 7 players and manager, but only one per club. (“Because if one of your teams had the entire Chelsea side, it would be ridiculous. I mean, Chelsea. IN WALES!” said Blatter, reportedly)

Negotiations were swift. The clubs signed players raging from Cristiano Ronaldo to Wayne Price. In an effort to ensure the future development of Welsh football, Nation ensured that there would be three young players, and three Welsh people in the squad, and that they would have brilliant academies.

Then he sat back, and waited to see the results…

Alright, hopefully I can get through the qualifying stages of the Champions League as that could be quite a problem if I come up against the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool. Otherwise I look good, just a question, will we get screenshots of our teams after the transfer windows.

EUROPEAN REPORT

Inter-Toto Cup 1ST Rnd Leg 1

Dacia v. Sheep Spankers (Zimbru Headquaters stadium, Chişinău)

A match which had been predicted as an easy win for the Sheep, the travelling fans were stunned when Vitaly Stanciu managed to get the ball behind the Sheep Spanker's defence and slotted it past Craig Gordon. However, it looked as though this was all the Moldovians would do, as just two minutes later Rob Earnshaw got on the end of a perfect Messi past, tucking the ball into the net. Just five minutes late however Alex Rãdoi headed a corner past Gordon, restoring the Dacia lead. In the 36th minute,

Stanciu got his second of the goal and Dacia's third. Just when it looked like Dacia would have the advantage going to Swansea, Rob Earnshaw managed to do exactly what Stanciu had done for Dacia's first goal, getting behind the defensive line and scoring. Despire a very good shot for Messi, the Sheep where unable to get a 3rd goal, meaning that Dacia Chişinău won the match 3-2. Despite this, many pundits were still backing Sheep Spankers to go through, with many suspecting the away goals would settle it.

Inter-Toto Cup 1ST Rnd Leg 2

Sheep Spankers (2) v. Dacia (3) (The Farm, Swansea)

As this match began the Welsh fans were nevous, but any fears that Dacia may be able to repeat their performance were quashed in the seventh minute as Micah Richards made a long pass from the right towards Lionel Messi, who managed to open the scoring , taking the lead on away goals. Seven minutes later Rob Earnshaw took the ball from Dacia's Ilie Coman and got the Sheep's second goal. In the 31st minute Earnshaw got his second of the match, with an assist from Messi. In the 75th minute 16-year-old Bradley Proctor came on for Hélio Pereira, and with his first touch, got on the end of a pass from Messi and put the ball in the back of the net. The Sheep Spankers United thus won the match 4-0 and 6-3 on aggrgate.

Inter-Toto Cup 2nd Rnd Leg 1

St. Gallen v. Sheep Spankers (Espenmoos, St. Gallen)

For their second round, Sheep Spankers were heading to Switzerland. The match started evenly, until Andrea Kohler managed to get the ball passed Craig Gordon to make it 1-0. This was still the score at half time, but almost instantly after the break Adam Franklin and Craig Gordon combined to do an impression of Gary Neville and Paul Robinson, making the score 2-0 to the Swiss. And thus it looked like staying - until stoppage time, where Jöel Schaub managed to get the ball into the net from a yard out. Even then, it wasn't over for the Sheep, as Giovanni Fischer managed to get his head to a David Rama cross, resulting in the final score; 4-0. The Sheep Spankers fans headed back to Swansea knowing that they needed a miracle at the Farm to keep their UEFA Cup dreams alive.

St. Gallen 4-0 Sheep Spankers | Match Stats

Inter-Toto Cup 2nd Rnd Leg 2

Sheep Spankers (0) v. St. Gallen (4) (The Farm, Swansea)

The first half of the Sheeps's attempt to pull of the near impossible was dull. No bookings, no goals. The Sheep had had four times as many shots as St. Gallen, but unfortunetly the same number of goals - zero. The second half looked to be going the same way, until the 58th minute, when Ched Evans passed the ball to Rob Earnshaw, who got his fifth goal of the campaign. Could Sheep Spankers United pull off the impossible? Unfortunely, it looked like it wasn't going to happen- until the 80th minute, when youth player Sam Burrows got free in the area and scored! Unfortunetly, despite badgering the Swiss for the last ten minutes, the Sheep were unable to get the crucial last two goals, and were eliminated from the Inter-Toto Cup in the Second Round.

The UEFA Champions League got underway at The Millennium Stadium for Ultimate Winners FC, facing a tough tie against Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb. 8 minutes in youth player Carl Francis managed to get on the end of a rebound from a Prince Gibson shot, and Winners FC went 1:0 ahead. Francis was then immediately subbed off. Not sure how that line of tactical thinking works, actually, espically as almost instantly after the restart Drazen Ivic managed to get an equaliser. However, Winners FC took the lead again in the 36th minute, Stephen Ireland heading in a corner. Just as it looked like Winners FC would be going in a goal ahead, Davor Vugerinec got an equaliser for Dinamo. In the second half both sides had good chances, however neither was able to get a winner, and the game finished 2:2.

UEFA Cup 1st Qualifying Phs Leg 1

Blue Army v. Artmedia (The Boot Camp, Holyhead)

A very dull first half was complimented by an only-slightly-less dull second half. The high point of the game came in the 46th minute, as Wayne Rooney got hold of a Sergio Agüero cross and scored the only goal. Other than that, very dull game which the home side won one nil. Very dull. Unlike the next one...

FC Midtjylland v. Llandrindod (SAS Arena, Herning)

While a very dull match was being played over in Holyhead, in Herning Ken Fagerberg, the FC Midtjylland captain, scored in the 7th minute. Just five minutes later Dimitar Berbatov got an equalisier after a pin-point pass from David Bentley. However, five more minutes later, Mikkel Thygesen tackled Llandrindod's Simon Davies in the area and made the score 2-1, and five MORE minutes later (are you spotting a pattern here?) Baba Collins made it 3-1, after some lovely passing from the Danes. Then the game slowed down a bit. Five whole minutes went by and no one scored. However, in the 37th minute Fagerberg headed in a Collins cross to pile the misery upon Llandrindod's supporters, and five minutes later Baba Collins got his second, to make it 5-1. In the 54th minute Simon Davies intercepted a pass from Thomas Pedersen and buried it to give the away fans some hope, but this was quickly dashed when Berbatov went down with what was later revealed to be a damaged elbow, meaning he would probably miss the second leg. In the 74th minute hope sprung again for Llandrindod, as Steve Bennett gave a penalty for a Thomas Pedersen foul. David Bentley put the ball on the spot and had no difficulty in making it 5:3. However these renewed hopes were dashed again, as Søren Hansen headed the ball into the net to make it 6:3, which was how it finished, leaving Llandrindod with three away goals, but needing one heck of a performance at Llandrindod Arena to reach the next round.

One week after the confrontation at The Millennium Stadium, Dinamo invited Winners FC into their own stadium. At the start of the match Dinamo had the advantage on away goals, and in the 5th minute took the lead on actual goals, Davor Vugrinec getting away from his marker and scoring. In the 27th minute Jasmin Ratkovic got through on goal and scored to make it 4-2 on aggregate, and they could have had another in the 39th minute, Etto's shot being ruled out for offside. It was 4-2 at half time, but almost instantly after the restart Prince Gibson scored to make it 4-3. Despite both sides having good oppertunities, it was Vugrinec who scored the game's next goal, with a cracking effort from 25 yards out. This more-or-less ended Winners FC's Champions League hopes, and Etto got a goal in stoppage time to confirm this- a 4-1 win to Dinamo; 6-3 on aggregate.

Llandrindod (3) v. FC Midtjylland (6) (Llandrindod Arena, Llandrindod Wells)

The Wellers went into this game needing a miracle. And it looked like they would get one after 3 minutes, when Berbatov - recovered from his injury - scored the opening goal. 5 minutes later David Bentley got the ball in the area and made it 2, giving the home fans hope. However, Ken Fagerberg got clean through on goal and made it 2-1 in the 11th minute, and could have equalised in the 18th minute - his shot being ruled out for offside. However after half time Baba Collins got on the end of a counter-attack and that was it, Midtjylland winning the tie 8-5 on aggregate.

Artmedia (0) v. Blue Army (1) (Za Starym mostom, Bratislava)

It was anticipated that this match would be a stroll in the park for the Army. They had one of the best goalies in the world- Iker Casillas- and one of the best strikers in the world - Wayne Rooney. It should have been easy. However, just 2 minutes in Milan Mentel got the Slovak side infront, and in the 6th minute Vratislav Kiss got Artmedia 2-0 up. Instantly Wayne Rooney got a goal for the Army to make it 2-2, but from then on it was all Artmedia. Vratislav got his second in the 10th minute, and the 20th minute saw Lubos Gajdos get a 4th for the Slovaks. It was 5-1 in the 31st minute from a Milan Mentel shot, and that was how it stayed at half time. Almost instantly after the restart however Vratislav Kiss made it 6-1, and in the 77th minute Stephen McManus gave away a penalty, which Lubos Gajdos took. It was saved by Casillas, but the Spaniad could do nothing about the rebound, which Gajdos put in the net. And that was it - 7-1. Despite this, it could have been a lot worse for the Army, Casillas pulling off several top-notch saves to prevent a higher total.

Artmedia 7-1 Blue Army | Match Stats

I'm guessing my manager's dumped Saivet and Anderson in the Reserves or U18's?

They're certainly missing from the 1st team squad.

Damn. I appear to have forgotten to put Anderson in your squad. (Saivet's in there, in the U19s). I've messed up there, sorry. I haven't gone to far and can easily restart with Anderson in your squad, what does everyone think I should do?

That is really quite annoying but as long as it's only the games inconsistencies then it shouldn't be too much trouble.

EUROPEAN REPORT

Inter-toto Cup 1st Round 1st Leg

Makedonija GP v. Sheep Spankers (Gjorce Petrov, Skopje)

The first half was very slow, and unfortunetly, neither side could break the deadlock. Almost instantly after the kick-off however, Feim Arsovski had a shot parried by Gordon and easily put the rebound into the net. The Macedonians now fell backwards trying to keep this lead, but controversy reared it's ugly head in the 67th minute when the Norwegian referee Terje Hauge gave a penalty against Tasev even though little contact was made. Rob Earnshaw didn't mind about the dubiousness of the penalty however, and scored to make it 1-1. Just 6 minutes later Earnshaw scored again, this time scoring a powerful free-kick from just outside the area. And that was how the match ended, with the Sheep taking a win and two away goals back with them to Swansea.

Sheep Spankers (2) v. Makedonija GP (1) (The Farm, Swansea)

Once again the match was very slow, and it took until the 82nd minute for there to be a goal, youth player Stuart Bowyer getting hold of a Messi cross and scoring. This made it 3-1 on aggregate, and it looked like a done deal for the Sheep. However in the 90th minute Feim Arsovski managed to score to set up an exciting finale, but there were no goals and the Sheep went through to the next round.

As Radchenko was the last man Manuel González had no choice but to dismiss the Ukrainian. In the 67th minute Lionel Messi was brought down by Vladimir Koryt'ko. In the penalty area. Messi had no problem in putting the resulting penalty into the net. There was controversy in the 90th minute as Golub was obstructed by Earnshaw and recieved a second yellow card, to the bafflement of many, espacially since it seemed the Welsh player had been at fault.

Just before halftime Earnshaw managed to take the aggregate lead for the Sheep with a calm finish. In the 58th minute Lysenko headed another goal, but the Sheep still had the lead on away goals. The rest of the match went by and it looked like RC Lens' opponents in the next round would be Sheep Spankers. However, in the 90th minute Blake was sent off for a second yellow card. In the injury time the Ukrainians threw everyone forward and got their reward, with Rinar Valeev heading Chornomorts's fourth goal, winning them the game and the tie.

In Romania, the Welsh champions tried to carry on the road to the Champions League group stage. However, in the 11th minute it looked like a troublesome night for the Winners, as Andrés Mendoza scored. From then on, it was almost all Winners FC, but they just couldn't get the ball into the net. Their best oppertunity came in the 85th minute, as Stephen Ireland got behind the keeper, but missed from a very tight angle. The game ended 1:0, with the Winners still in with a good chance of winning at the Millennium Stadium.

Vaduz (1) v. Llandrindod (2) (Rheinpark Stadion, Vaduz)

With all other WSL teams having qualifiyed for their second rounds, the Wellers wouldn't want to be the team to break the trend in the tiny little principality of Liechenstein. They had the advantage initally, and held in until the 68th minute, when Andreas Ben Hatira scored an incredible free-kick, giving Vaduz the lead on away goals. They held this lead for 6 minutes, before Simon Davies delievered a vicious shot into the top corner to regain the Welsh side's lead. 4 minutes later Nicklas Bendtner scored to ensure that both WSL sides would be carrying on in their quest for glory.

The third Qualifiying Round is where many big teams enter. The potental for a 'dream tie' like Arsenal, Celtic, Lazio, Liverpool or Valencia is there. But to get there, Ultimate Winners FC would have to overcome a one goal disadvantage against a Romanian side. The first half was slow, and it looked like the two teams would be trudging off at half-time with the score at 0-0. Howver, right on the stoke of half-time, Dan Hurst intercepted a pass and gave Winners FC the lead. However, neither side had an away goal, and the second half was full of attacks, with both sides trying to get through, until the 90th minute, when the referee blew his whistle. It would take an extra 30 minutes to seperate these two...

The winning goal came in the 99th minute. Miles Adam got hold of a pass from Stephen Ireland and smashed it towards the goal. Zapata parried the ball but wasn't able to stop Ceri Williams getting onto the rebound and scoring the winner, ensuring that the Cardiff side would be guareenteed to get at least four more games of European action this season!

Ultimate Winners FC are now just two games away from the UEFA Champions League proper. Even if they lose at this stage, they'll still qualify for the UEFA Cup. But to carry on on their major path, the one to glory in Moscow, they would have to take on Turkish champions Fenerbahçe. With newly-appointed England manager Stuart Pearce on hand to witness the performance of Mr. Gerrard, Winners FC got off to a bad start, Mateja Kezman heading past Hugo Lloris after 8 minutes. From then on Winners FC had all the pressure, unitl shortly after half time, when Kezman got the ball in the penalty area against the run of play and was pushed by Matthew Tuck. The Fenerbahçe captain, Alex, had no trouble in putting the penalty past Hugo Lloris. Despite all the chances created by Cristiano and Ceri, Winners couldn't get an away goal. But as Fabio Capello pointed out after the match, the Winners have not yet won the away leg of any of the Champions League ties so far, and they still got through. Hope was not lost...

UEFA Cup 2nd Qual. Round 1st Leg

Groclin v. Blue Army (Powstancow Chocieszynskich, Grodzisk Wielkopolski)

Imagine getting that stadium name on Scrabble!

The Blue Army's quest for glory in the Greatest Stadium in the World™ continued in Grodzisk Wielkopolski. Groclin had beaten Maltese side Hibernians to get to the 2nd Qual. Round. The first half was a drab affair, generally dominated by the Welsh team, Sergio Agüero having the best chances. Instantly after half time a long ball intended for Wayne Rooney was taken by Pance Kumbav, who passed the ball back to his keeper. Or would have done, had Wladyslaw Bogusz not completely mistimed his run, meaning the Poles had scored a spectacular own goal! For a long time it looked like the Army would return to Holyhead with this slim lead, but in the 83rd minute Adam Wilk managed to get the ball past Casillas from quite far out. Still, at full-time the scores were level, but the Army had the advantage on away goals and so confidence was high amongst the Soldiers.

Basel v. Llandrindod (St. Jakobspark, Basel)

Having already won in Liechenstein, Llandrindod Wells went to the counrty next door to take on Basel in their UEFA Cup match. The first half was attacking, but noone got on target and the teams departed at 0:0. Almost immediately Davide Favre parried a shot but could do nothing about Dimitar Bebatov's rebound to give the Wellers the lead. It took just 4 minutes for Eren Dediyok to get an equaliser, and in the 68th minute Mathias Schneuwly made it 2:1. No one came anywhere near getting another goal, and the game ended with Basel having the lead, but with Llandrindod having an away goal.

Could it be done? Could Winners FC reach the UEFA Champions League Group Stage? the Cardiff-based side were two goals down, and needed a quick goal. And there was a goal after just 3 minutes, but unfortunetly it was Mateja Kezman who got it, after a free-kick took a deflection off Hunt. This away goal ment that Winners FC would have to get at least 4 goals to qualify. In the 24th minute Robinson took a corner for Winners FC and Cristiano Ronaldo buried it to make it 3:1. Could it be done? No. There were no more goals, and Winners FC dropped down into the UEFA Cup.

Until the 82nd minure, when Simon Davies intercepted the ball and scored! Blue Army (1) v. Groclin (1) (The Boot Camp, Holyhead)

The Army invited the team that hasn't heard of vowels to their Camp to play for the UEFA Cup. The Welsh club got a corner in the 31st minute, which Koumas drifted in towards Wayne Rooney, who put the ball into the net. The lead was kept until the 69th minute, when Janusz Kuklis finished to make the scores equal. It was still equal at 90 minutes, when the fourth offical raised the numbers board: 4. It was 94th minute when Paul Evans scored with literally the last kick of the game. And that was it, and the WSL would have three teams in the UEFA Cup!
