Why AS Monaco?

Although based in Monaco, the Club is regarded as a French club, as it plays in the French football league system, and because the Principality of Monaco is not a member of UEFA. Monaco FC is one of the most successful clubs in France, having won seven league titles and five Coupe de France trophies. The Club has also regularly competed in European football having been runners-up in both the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Champions League in 1992 and 2004, respectively.

Monaco have recently been relegated from Ligue 1 and after enduring a stable first season in Ligue 2 they were taken over by a Russian billionaire who wants to take Monaco back to Ligue 1 and European success, a nice budget for Ligue 2 and a good crop of young players including one of the best South American youngsters are just some of the reasons to manage this fallen club.

The Chairman - Dmitry Rybolovlev

The Russian business man (currently ranked 93rd in the Forbes Billionaire list) acquired AS Monaco in December 2011, having lived in Monaco and an avid football fan it made sense for all parties involved, Rybolovlev has said that he did not consider the transaction simply as an acquisition but as the beginning of a new and effective partnership in the interest of the development of the Club. He stated that he sees Monaco FC as something more than just a sports team but as one of the main symbols of the Principality, its pride and its traditions.

History

Early Years

AS Monaco FC was founded on 23 August 1924 as an unification of numerous local clubs based in France and the principality. The club's early years were spent in the amateur regional divisions of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, rising rapidly between the leagues in the 1990s. In 1933, Monaco were invited by the French Football Federation to turn professional. The Monégasques' first year of second division football ended in failure however, as they were relegated to the amateur leagues the following year. By 1948, Monaco re-acquired its professional status and returned to the French second division; they subsequently consistently finished in its upper echelons, with this sustained effort resulting in promotion to the French first division for the first time in 1953.

First success and decline

In 1960, Monaco's first iconic coach, Lucien Leduc, led the club to its first professional trophy, the Coupe de France. This initial success was bettered in the following year with the club winning the French Championship for the first time in its history, qualifying for the European Cup. Leduc subsequently led the club to its first League and Cup Double in 1963. Upon Leduc's departure in 1963, Monaco endured a barren run, entrenched in the middle half of the league for the best part of the next decadeand alternating between the first and second divisions after 1963.

Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger was appointed manager of AS Monaco in 1987. Wenger's reign saw the club enjoy one of its most successful periods, with several inspired signings, including future legends George Weah, Glenn Hoddle, Jürgen Klinsmann, and Youri Djorkaeff. Youth team policies produced future World Cup winners Emmanuel Petit, Lilian Thuram, and Thierry Henry. Under Wenger, they won the league in his first season in charge (1988) and the Coupe de France in 1989 and 1991, with the club consistently competing in the latter stages of the European Cup and regularly challenging for the league title.

Second decline

After Wenger's departure, the club went on to record two further league championships; under Jean Tigana in 1997 and under Claude Puel in 2000. However as the decade came to an end, rumours were surfacing that the club was facing numerous financial difficulties. In 2003, these financial problems came to a head. Despite finishing second in the league, the club was relegated to Ligue 2 by the French Professional League for amassing a €50 million debt.

Didier Deschamps, European dreams and financial woes

Former French national team captain Didier Deschamps became manager of the club in 2001 and had a team featuring stalwarts such as Fernando Morientes, Ludovic Giuly, Jérôme Rothen, and Dado Pršo, finished third in Ligue 1 and enjoyed a remarkable run to the final of the UEFA Champions League, beating Real Madrid and Chelsea along the way. However despite the on-field success, the 2003–04 season was the clubs worst financial year in its history. Within 12 months Deschamps had left as coach and Svara had been replaced by Michel Pastor as the chairman. The team declined for a few years and ultimately were relegated from Ligue 1.

Current status

AS Monaco finished 8th in their last season in Ligue 2, mid-way through the season Rybolovlev took charge of the club and cleared the massive amount of debt the club had. Claudio Ranieri was hired to lead the club back into Ligue 1. The philosophy of the club has been to bring in young talent and achieve promotion, after this Rybolovlev has said further investment in bigger named players will occur.

The Players

Goalkeepers

Sebestien Chabbert - Age: 34 - Nationality: French. Value: £425k

Chabbert joined Monaco 2 seasons ago and has only had a handful of appearances. Decent shot stopper but lacking in Aerial Ability and rushing out, either substitute goal keeper or sell.

Flavio Roma - Age: 38 - Nationality: French. Value: 275k

Flavio returned to the club from Milan after making only 1 appearance in 3 years in Italy. Flavio Roma had previously been at the club from 2001-2009 and is in the favoured personal list for the club, his age is an issue and is fairly susceptible to injures. As he has just re-joined the club it will be difficult to sell him quickly not that there will be many takers, either release (recommended) or back up.

Danijel Subasic - Age: 27 - Nationality: Croatian. Value: 1.6m

The best keeper of a fairly poor bunch has good reflexes and mentally is capable of performing in the bigger games but isn't suited to a sweeper keeper role and has average aerial ability - Starter.

This is a must strengthen area, Chabbert and Roma are aging and are fairly poor and can't be counted on that much, Subasic is only slightly better than those two so expect to concede goals if this area isn't strengthened. Monaco do have Martin Sourzac who is in the reserves who has the potential to become a good Ligue 1 goalkeeper, he however is not ready for first team football.

Transfer Targets:

Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester City) Available between £2m - £3m

Thomas Kraft (Hertha Berlin) - Available between £2.6m and £3.7m

Yohann Thuram-Ulien (Troyes) - Contract runs out in 6 months, the best out of the three targets mentioned.

Right Backs

Dennis Appiah - Age: 20. Nationality: French. Value. £750k.

Appiah has come up through the youth ranks and has yet to make an appearance for Monaco, he is currently the only natural right back in the first team squad and this is an area needing to be looked. He is capable of being a starter right off the bat but I would personally try and get someone a bit more experienced. Anrea Raggi is rated a better right back but is not a natural, he is more suited to a centre back so I would make a purchase in this area.

Transfer targets:

Sebastian Corchia. Age: 21 (Sochaux) - Definite purchase, but will cost a lot has he is rated as one of the game’s best right backs

Serge Aurier. Age. 19 (Toulouse) Same as above

Jonathan. Age: 26 (Inter) Available between £1.7m and £2.4m

Jonathan will probably be your best bet right now as he is cheaper and more developed than the other two, but in the future keep a look out for Corchia and Aurier, won't get many better right backs than those two.

Left Backs

Giorgos Tzavellas - Age: 24. Nationality: Greek. Value: £2.7m.

Giorgos is officially a new signing at the club having spent last season on loan at AS Monaco, he is a well-rounded player with no real strength or weakness, he has a high work rate however and is naturally fit - Starter.

Layvin Kurzawa - Age: 19. Nationality: French. Value £1.4m.

A player graduating from the youth team, yet to make a senior appearance, currently not yet ready to be a regular but the odd game here and there would be very beneficial, he will pick up injuries however but his work rate and team work is to be admired. Back up or loaned out.

As before, Raggi once again is rated the best full back, even on the left but I feel this area is fine for Ligue 2 and a purchase isn't necessary. Plus a youth prospect (Florian Pinteaux) is currently out on loan and could become a regular starter.

Central Defenders

Adriano - Age: 30. Nationality: Brazilian. Value £1.7m

Adriano has been at the club for 6 years and is a capable defender but lacks the mental stats to be a starter at the club, his lack of composure and concentration means that he isn't starter material - Sell or back up

Andrea Raggi - Age: 28. Nationality: Italian. Value: £4.4m

Raggi is a new signing at the club, joining from Bologna in Serie A. A quick defender that is capable of playing either full back role well. Can be prone to injuries - Definite member of the squad, starter or back up is your choice.

Andreas Wolf -Age: 30. Nationality: German. Value. £3m.

Your best defender, recently joined from Werder Bremen, fantastic at marking and tackling whilst also having a high work rate, only weakness is that he may not be as consistent as you would like him to be - Starter

Yvan Erichot -Age: 22. Nationality: French. Value: £575k

Yvan at the age of 22 has been at the club all his life but has failed to make an appearance, he also has only made 10 appearances in total on loan at Clermon Foot and Leira. He is by far the weakest defender at the club but does have decent height, but he will never make it at the club. Sell.

Gary Kagelmacher -Age: 24. Nationality: Uruguayan. Value: £4.1m

Gary cost the club a fee of £2.2m just over 6 months ago, a product of the Real Madrid youth team he is a brilliant defender and along with Wolf the best defender in the side. Has the mental stats to become the captain of the club in the future or straight away.

Well covered area, no need to strengthen.

Defensive Midfielders

Stephane Dumont - Age: 29. Nationality: French. Value: £2.4m

Dumont only joined Monaco in January and starts the game by being transfer listed having not yet played for the club. Can suffer from injuries but has high team work, the jury is still out whether he should stay at the club, although more than capable for this level, he won't be a part of the future of the club - back up or sell.

Gary Coulibaly - Age: 26. Nationality: French. Value: £3.1m

Another playing starting on the transfer list, he is a hard working anchor man who can be an able back up. I would take him off the transfer list and get a good season or two out of him.

Delvin Ndinga - Age: 24. Nationality: Congolese. Value: £4.1m

The best holding midfielder at the club, hardworking, strong, not the greatest passer but is a destroyer, he's a new signing from Auxerre. Starter. Can play Centre mid also.

Nampalys Mendy - Age: 20. Nationality: French. Value: £2.4m

A player from the youth team, became a regular last season and could become a regular start for years to come, not yet as good as Ndinga but definite player to have in the lesser games and cup games. Fast, but not that strong so he will need training in strength, also a poor passer and marker, he will need to be carefully trained but if you can do it, he's a star.

A well stacked area, could do with selling either Coulibaly or Dumont - or even both but centre midfield is a problem..

Centre Midfielders

Jakob Poulsen - Age: 28. Nationality: Danish. Value: £8.25m

A new signing for the club, fantastic as an advanced playmaker, a hard working player with good passing and creativity, can actually play everywhere apart from centre back, but centre midfield is where he is the most natural. Starter

That's basically it, Ndinga can play as a ball winner but isn't a natural, if you play Ndinga in the centre they you may want to keep one of the holding mids. A weak area that does need signings.

Transfer targets.

Marcelinho (Ludogorets) Age: 27. Available between £3m - £4.5m

Rasmus Lindgren (Red Bull Salzbug) available between (£2m - £3m)

Younousse Sankhare (Dijon) Age: 22

Mathieu Coutadeur (Lorient) Age: 26

The latter two will cost a fair bit but both are fantastic players, Marcelinho is a wild card, capable of playing Centre mid, attack mid and up front, good dribbling skills and agility, a little selfish. Lindgren can play everywhere but up front and he could be a good player to bring in, high in creativity.

Attacking Midfielders

Nacer Barazite - Age: 22. Nationality: Dutch. Value: £5.5m.

The former Arsenal man has bags of talent and can play in the wing roles also, may get injured far more than you like but he is a good member of the squad and one to keep around.

A brilliant prospect is currently away on loan (Valentin Eysseric). He is playing at OGC Nice on loan, he will become better than Barazite and maybe one of the best in a long time.

Left Wingers

Emir Bajrami - Age: 24. Nationality: Swedish. Value: £8m (on loan from Twente)

Unfortunately he is only on loan, natural left winger, a fast player with decent stats, first team starter for the first season, depending on how he performs you may want to make it a permanent signing.

You have a few versatile players who can be trained in the left wing role so a signing may not be as needed as you might think, however if you want a natural back up then I'd go for:

Thomas Ince (Blackpool) - Age: 20 - Available between £5m - £7m

Nolito (Benfica) Age: 25 - Available between £2.5m and £4m.

Right Wingers

Nabil Dirar - Age: 25. Nationality: Moroccan. Value: £9m

A highly rated and tricky player is the best right winger at the club. However I have concerns of him long term, he might be good for Ligue 2 and depending on your ambition if you get promoted he may be surplus to requirements.

Edgar Salli - Age: 19. Nationality: Cameroonian. Value: £3m.

A young player who broke through last season, stats wise he needs a lot of work, but he's quick and potentially could become a very good player. I'd either keep or loan out. Good training regime is a must for Edgar.

Yannick Ferreira Carrasco - Age 18. Nationality: Belgian. Value: £400k.

Another player like Salli, he is a natural on either wing but isn't ready for first team football, either loan or youth team for young Yannick.

Strikers

Ibrahima Toure - Age 26. Nationality: Senegalese. Value: £4.7m

Toure was signed last season but never made a league appearance, he's quite a lazy and selfish player but is one of the best finishers at the club, with the right service he can become a good player at this level, long term future is a doubt though.

Frederic Nimani - Age: 24. Nationality: French. Value: £3.5m

A player from the youth team and at th age of 24 has never established himself at the club, countless loans hasn't done him many favours, although he has good strength he has little future at the club - sell

Lucas Ocampos - Age 17. Nationality: Argentinian. Value: £8.75

Lucas cost a whopping £10.25m from River Plate at the start of the season, he made his senior debut for River Plate last season, a young talented striker, and even at his young age is the best striker at the club according to the staff. I wouldn't go that far as his finishing and composure isn't quite good enough yet, high dribbling and flair means he could be deployed on either wing until he gets older and that’s when he can rival the likes of Henry and co who have played for the club. Never sell.

Valere Germain - Age: 22. Nationality: French. Value. £1.1m

A youth product who broke through last season, has fantastic potential and is a hard worker, although not a great finisher he can be nurtured into a good striker for Ligue 1. Keep.

Sebastian Ribas - Age 24. Nationality: Uruguayan. Value: £4.7m (On Loan from Genoa)

Ribas is currently on loan, he is a good target man and could become useful at this level, keep him around but don't hesitate to terminate his loan if he under

performs.

There is a young youth player on loan at Auxerre (Terence Makengo), he has a lot of pace but lacks a lot stat wise for him to become a quality player in the future but his pace when he comes back will always be a danger

Youth and Reserve team:

The youth team is packed with a lot of talent; a lot of good young players are at Monaco. The reserve team also has some prospects and oddly has Jan Koller who is nowhere near any sort of level at the age of 40, I don't think he's at the club IRL so I'm not sure if this is an oversight?

Tactics

This is how I have set up, I think with the amount of wingers in the side that they need to be used, the fact that the strikers are not that great yet means that maybe a lone striker would be the best option. I'm not a big tactical head but this is how I'd play it with counter attacking.

I like the thought of being able to throw millions of Euros around and quickly build a European super-power. I did load up a save to have a look around the side, and saw that you're given a decent budget for Ligue 2, so once your in Champions League it should be even more lucrative I'd imagine.

I will probably put screen shots of the players up in the next day or so..

Yes he is, always pump money during the year when the club run red. I am in the fifth season and always granted a good amount transfer budget. However Ryblolovlev always has high standard for the season objectives as well. So high money, high pressure, good fun.

basically their non french players pay a low rate of tax so you get a big bonus in wage negotiation over the rest of the league.

this benfit was also carried over to the french nationals which shouldnt have been the case as there is an agreement between Monaco and France that means the french player still get charged income tax or something. had pointed this out in the bugs form but not sure if its been implamented into the new patch. will check later.

Yep, I'm 4 seasons in and playing in the CL and still don't get crowds over 15,000 so everytime I ask for an expansion or a new stadium I get shot down by the chairman despite the £60m sitting in the bank.

I disagree with your last point...I've still got a number of the original squad in my first team and doing well in the CL, such as Bazarite, Ocampos, Ndinga and Poulsen.

Do you play Ocampos up front or on the wing, as I noticed his main position is as a ST but I always thought he was a winger.

In 2018 may the board announced new stadium with 27k seats. (Hopefully it can be expended in the future)

Playing him as a striker but rotate him with Doumbia who I got on a free from CSKA...his shooting and composure have gone up with training so he's banging them in the league and Europe.

Overview

A quick update of my first season at Monaco. I started the game with no transfer budget, the same for every other club (I have my reasons..) so this meant I couldn't sign anyone apart from free signings and only one came in, Michel Salgado who will mostly be used as a tutor more than anything else. In France you are allowed one 'joker' transfer when the window is closed, this allows you to sign a player but only from another French club. I haven't yet taken this up. I might try to bring in the Mexican goalkeeper Ochoa who has been a hero for me on past FM's but he's not as good as he used to be.

I employed Eric Cantona as DoF depsite his awful stats, I just wanted a big name staff member at the club to make it seem like we mean business The chairman has put in £15m in total in the first 3 months, as the club loses money but as soon as the balance is below £20m he puts in £7.5m.

Tactic

I tweaked the tactic as the start of the season I felt I was vulnerable in defence so its now this. This allows Barazite to be at his brilliant best.

I was 2-0 at half time against Dijon which prompted the change of tactics which resulted in a 3-2 come back and since then the side have scored more goals and have created more chances, the 1-1 drew with Angers was actually a good result as I was down to 9 men at half time, made 3 subs and then had an injury after 50 mins, played with 8 men and managed to score an equaliser

Coupe de Ligue

I felt the expecations of a quarter final place was a tad unrealistic, I failed. I reached the last 16 and played PSG away, they surprisingly played a very strong side and won, but we put up a better fight than we have in some of our league away gamesbut they were too strong for us in the end, Nene and Hourou got the goals whilst we missed a couple of good chances near the end of the game.

Thoughts

The side is still not flowing as I would have liked, we haven't killed off teams good enough and usually end up hanging on in the last few minutes. But we're unbeaten without playing well which is always a good sign, Traore has been good but inconsistent, Barazite has been brilliant but is currently out for a month, Wolf has been rock solid at the back and surprisngly the goalkeeper Subasic has played well. I still feel I need to strengthen up front and midfield in January but I might put it off until the summer depending on results.

Not as much as I expected, the two holding mids do a good enough job.. but its not ideal if I get promoted.

Started as Monaco, 5 games in and it's been terrible. I've won the games I've played badly and lost when I've played well. A new goalkeeper is a must and Kagelmacher has given away 3 penalties and Wolfs a poor player. Disappointed with Ocampos as well. Gonna try and stick with it in the hope of an up turn.

Stick with Kagelmacher as he is a pretty decent Ligue 2 centre half. I'm just about to enter January, so looking to improve myself.Thanks Barca for going after Ospina I wanted him

Kagalmacher and Wolf turned into solid centre backs for me in Ligue 2. Ocampos hit form around about January, he's only 17 at the start of the game so he needs time. In the end he scored 22 goals and had 8 assists. I finished my season, I might update it but I've gone back to FM12 for the time being..

Well I managed to get sacked first time round (chopped and changed tactics too much). But started again and I'm going to play him as an advanced forward alongside Barazite (DLF)

How good do the attendances get? I'm thinking of starting a Monaco game but I'm worried that the club wont expand over a certain size due to how small Monaco is as a place.

Just finished my first season with Monaco, winning Ligue 2.Trying to get a transfer listed Abel Hernandez coming in the summer for £9.25M, I was hoping to partner him with a transfer listed Gaston Ramires but then I remembered about the no more than two foreign players rule (Already have Doria and Ocampos) My question is which of Doria and Ocampos do I let go out on loan to accomodate Hernandez?

First season, bought Zaha, Ince and Kraft, later bringing in Bony in Jan. Came 2nd in the league, Bony transformed a struggling team.

Second season, Mohammed Sissokho on loan from PSG, Yanga M'biwa, Corchia and Defour joined.

Currently 5th in Ligue 1 after 10 games, Bony with 9 in 10, as well as Zaha and Ince being superb. Ocampos been impressive also, and Barazite pulling the strings in the middle. Kraft is very solid, and surprisingly, Kagelmacher has been very good with Yanga.

Vasco have got to be taking the **** here, Liverpool have had a £30M bid for transfer listed Dede accepted. I offer that it gets rejected, they then up their asking price to £35M. Bid £35M rejected now they've upped their asking price to £40M. I think I'll take Kurt Zouma for £20M cheers Vasco

After this quite frankly poor start things are looking rosy at the beginning of January. Sat top of Ligue 1, in the Semi Finals of the Coupe de la Ligue. Asked the board for more funds in January they agreed to my request and said funds purchased Aurier to rotate with Corchia. Well 3rd season went pretty poorly, scraping a 7th place finish. Signed Isco for this season, as well as a couple of others. Zaha and Ince are also developing well on the wings, hopefully we'll finish top 3 again this season.
