Maybe we let the heat of the derby get to us, but a 2-0 defeat with a man sent off is not the way we hoped our season aside, but at least we are safely to the next round in the cup.

Who are the key players for Santurtzi? what formation do we play? Plus keep me posted if there are any major transfers.

Maradona favours a 4-5-1/4-3-3 formation. There'll be a bit of coverage of transfers and the league's top players in the next hour or so, but probably nothing too in-depth because it would take me ages!

COPA GAIZKA MENDIETA

First Round

2014Mendieta16.png

It's difficult to know which of the matches which took place in the first round of the first ever Copa Gaizka Mendieta were surprises and which were to be expected, but those teams who have started strongly in the league typically did well again here. There were wins for the likes of Saint-Jean de Luz, Getxo KKE and Real Santurtzi, while Real Iruña and Santurtzi Nabigatzalleek suffered more misery. RCD Errenteria lost to rivals Athletic Irún, while Club de Biarritz needed penalties to scrape past Red Bull Bilbo.

Real Santurtzi again getting through, happy with them so far!

Curious to see what the best players look like, they should all be quite similar if they were auto-generated by the same reputation figure for each club. Guessing the first transfers will have quite a big impact and hopefully the youth players will too.

A bit late to ask but did you modify the youth rating for the nation at all?

LIGA DEL EUSKAL HERRIA

24 August 2013

2014LigaMatch2.png

There weren't many goals on offer on the season's second Saturday, with only two sides able to net more than once. Red Bull Bilbo won their second successive match, and possess the only 100% record in the league. Álvaro Líbano scored his third of the season for Saint-Jean de Luz, with their indiscipline costing them victory at home to Real Santurtzi, while SC Mañaria and Santurtzi Nabigatzalleek lost again and remain pointless.

31 August 2013

2014LigaMatch3.png

Things were far more entertaining for the supporters this time around, with early pacesetters Saint-Jean de Luz, Getxo KKE and Vitoria Unido all scoring three times. SC Mañaria picked up their first ever point away to draw specialists Aizkorri-Aratz, but Diego Maradona's Santurtzi side are still pointless. RB Bilbo could only draw at home to Atletico Tolosa so lose their 100% record, while two wins on the bounce has seen Athletic Irún rise and sit only one point from the top. Half of the league's teams have still not lost a game, while half are still yet to taste victory.

Some of the teams have better players than others interestingly; I think the facilities do have a fairly large impact as well as reputation.

And I believe I set the youth rating to be about 150, so just below or around that of Spain and France. So we should see some decent players coming through!

SUMMER TRANSFERS

2014SummerTransfers.png

There were a lot of transfers this summer as all teams looked to bolsters squads they'd assembled at trials with stronger players from other leagues. There were a lot of cases of bigger clubs from abroad snapping up Basque youngsters and loaning them back to their original clubs, while some sides splashed out extravagant fees for new youngsters of their own. RCD Errenteria are the current holders of the Basque transfer record, after paying €10.75 million for Rayo Vallecano teenager José Adán.

am I right in thinking only Basque players can play for the teams?

I hope any of my teams youngsters won't get poached, we have made 2 signings and 0 sales so far so I'm happy with that :)

Nope, they can sign anyone! There's squad rules; they're allowed a maximum of ten foreign players and a minimum of five club homegrown players.

And unfortunately for you, three of your youngsters have been poached, by Ajax, Spurs and a Turkish side. The list of transfers there is only the most expensive ones; there'd be waaaaaaay too many to list them all, there's hundreds. :p

The smart money will be on Saint-Jean de Luz or Getxo KKE to win the league this season I'd say.

Hopefully the clubs become a bit more proactive with their efforts to keep their youngsters.

5 players in those rankings which is great, and I can't wait to see how Blasco will turn out!

I don't expect any fireworks in the first season as I didn't allocate much transfer budget and I aim for better youth to help us and the country. What formation is my manager using by the way?

Fingers crossed that Goñi can develop at quite a rate this season as his CA is pretty poor, but PA is awesome. Best young Basque player in the game! Though only on loan.. and the only one from my team on the list.

I'm hoping for a solid mid-table position this season, and maybe a cup run. Not expecting anything crazy..

Yeah the teams with strong facilities seem to have a disproportionate amount of players in the top tens, which I'd agree makes sense for young players but maybe a little surprising for the league's best players!

Saint-Jean de Luz have begun the season playing a 4-5-1/4-3-3 formation too; it seems to be the way to go with most sides at the moment.

Yeah thats right sell me best players ffs eugh!! Dave im just wondering will you be releasing the DB you have done :D

I don't expect I'll release it any time soon, I think it may take a bit of the thrill and tension out of this sign-up if people start to focus on their own games, sorry! But without a doubt, once this sign-up either starts to die or reaches some form of natural conclusion then I'll release it and let you all know.

Fingers crossed that Goñi can develop at quite a rate this season as his CA is pretty poor, but PA is awesome. Best young Basque player in the game! Though only on loan.. and the only one from my team on the list.

Galatasaray signed him from you for €425K at the beginning of the season; a bit of a steal for them! They had the grace to allow him to remain on loan for the season though, perhaps he'll be able to help you achieve some goals while he's still there.

They haven't declared yet so there's still a chance!
Well, a good start for Unido, although we got knocked out of the Cup :(

Can players like Griezmann and Herrera be called up to the Basque team?

Yep, absolutely right. No France call for Griezmann yet, although he's said that he wants to wait for his chance with them rather than commit to Pays Basque. Herrera and Illaramendi (the other two top-tenners still available to the Basque) have kept quiet so far, but neither has been called up for the nation's first game, a friendly* against Moldova. That's just coming up, by the way.

*It's not technically a friendly, but a World Cup qualifier. I'm treating the few of those that the Basque side have as friendlies, and kind of hope they fail to qualify for the main thing. Then they can start playing 'competitively' when the Euros qualification starts in September next year.

SEASON 2013/14

100px-Basque_Football_Association_logo.png

PAYS BASQUE NATIONAL TEAM

Moldova (H) - 6 September 2013

San Mamés is the setting for Pays Basque's first ever full international as a FIFA affiliated nation, and a sell-out 53100 crowd have paid to see their heroes host minnows Moldova. They'll certainly be expecting fireworks, and a big win, as Didier Deschamps names a strong starting lineup, consisting primarily of players from Athletic Club and Real Sociedad. In fact, all but one of the squad plies their trade in Spain, with Dani Estrada playing in Romania. No players from the Liga del Euskal Herria have been called up. Here is the team in full:

Starting XI: Iraizoz (Athletic); Martínez (R. Sociedad), Oier (Osasuna), Etxeita (Athletic), Yuri (Eibar); Markel, Prieto (R. Sociedad), Rico; Susaeta, Gómez (Athletic), Agirretxe (R. Sociedad). Bench: Herrerín, Sola, Toquero, Gurpegi, De Marcos (Athletic), Ros, Elustondo (R. Sociedad), Estrada (Steaua), Isma (Sporting de Gíjon), Echaide (Hércules), Riesgo (Osasuna).

And Moldova will get us underway, the away team kicking from right to left in this first half.

1st minute - Xabi Prieto has an instant impact within his first sixty seconds of playing in the green, white and red, but the impact is felt solely by Moldovan forward Vasile Galac. Prieto will pick up a yellow card for that challenge.

3rd minute - Igor Clonin with a long throw-in for Moldova, which drops to Galac on the edge of the box. He slips it right to Anatol Pisnic who tries to bend it into the top corner, just wide! Good effort, and good start from Moldova.

11th minute - It's a free-kick for Pays Basque, and Ibai Gómez lays it off to Markel, who looks in front of him but is closed it down. Back to Gómez it goes now, who shoots... Fantastic effort! Tipped just over the bar by Moldovan goalkeeper George Savu, and it'll be a corner kick now to Pays Basque. Gómez it is who knocks it in, but it's cleared away by Pisnic.

16th minute - Moldova now with a free-kick of their own, and Pisnic will take it. But that's way over the bar, poor effort!

24th minute - Moldova are playing it around nicely in midfield, before Eugen Rusu gets away down the right. He looks to bend in a cross but that's way too close to the keeper. Hold on though, as Gorka Iraizoz has to get down sharply to turn it behind. I think that might have been going in! Moldova with the corner now, but that's poor, and away it goes.

33rd minute - Yuri has gone down for the Basque, and looks to be in a bit of pain. It looks like he'll continue for now though.

36th minute - Some lovely football down the right from Pays Basque results in Carlos Martínez laying off Prieto, who hits it hard! Just over the bar, although the goalkeeper looked to have that one covered.

39th minute - Carlos Martínez again down the right, this time slipping Imanol Agirretxe in on the edge of the box. Agirretxe looks to pull it back across the goal, but that's too close to Savu, who catches the ball easily.

45th minute - What an awful first half that was! Both sides restricted to potshots, and only with a handful each. Pays Basque dominated possession and didn't look at all threatened, but they'll have to be a whole lot better than that in the second half.

SEASON 2013/14

100px-Basque_Football_Association_logo.png

PAYS BASQUE NATIONAL TEAM

Moldova (H) - 6 September 2013

One substitution for the home side; Kike Sola comes on for Ibai Gómez. They'll get us underway in this second half.

48th minute - Sola's involving himself in his side's play right away, and feeds the ball down the line for Prieto. His cross is poor though, and Savu catches it. His distribution is poor though, and results in Agirretxe being tripped on the right flank. Markel Susaeta will take the free kick.. And Savu just gets there ahead of Mikel Rico! The ball is hacked behind for a corner, which Prieto swings in, and Sola can't get a meaningful contact on the ball. That'll go out for a throw-in...

60th minute - Igor Clonin is trapped in here in his own box, and his rushed clearance only finds Susaeta. A neat one two is exchanged with Carlos Martínez, and that's a lovely ball into the near post, but Agirretxe can only steer into the side netting. Close!

66th minute - Still no goals here as we go into the last 25 minutes of the match. Susaeta has the ball on the corner spot here for Pays Basque, and he'll swing one in. That's a dangerous ball, and there's a mass scramble in the box, and Savu's way off his line! GOAL!!! It's turned in, and Pays Basque lead! It looks like Markel got the last touch; he's certainly claiming the goal. Delight for the Basque; it's their first ever international goal! The goal hero is being taken off, with Isma on in his place. Imanol Aggiretxe is being substituted too, and it'll be Javi Ros replacing him.

69th minute - Moldova really under the cosh now as Prieto looks to play a long ball in behind the defence, but it's too short and headed away. Now Moldova can look to play the ball out of danger, and Igor Mardari is brought down by Yuri. He's already on a yellow card, this doesn't look good for him... And he's off! Yuri sent off on his Pays Basque debut, dear oh dear.

71st minute - They may be a man down but Pays Basque are still playing all the football. Isma is clear down the left, and his cross is headed just wide by Sola. Close!

74th minute - A corner for the Basque, and Prieto puts it into the box. Javi Ros is so close to a goal, slamming it into the base of the post! Mikel Rico really puts his boot through the rebound, but that's over the bar.

89th minute - Maxim Belan away down the right as Moldova break! And he absolutely smashes that into Iraizoz who produces a great save to turn it over the bar. Not sure he knew an awful lot about that! Every Basque player is inside their own box to defend this as Belan puts it in, and Martínez heads it clear.

90th minute - Javi Ros has it in the corner for Pays Basque, and the referee blows the final whistle!

FULL TIME

2014NTMoldovaScore.png

Not the greatest nor prettiest of starts for Pays Basque, and certainly not without its negatives, but they get the win they desperately wanted to start with at home to Moldova. Real Sociedad midfielder Markel is the man who supplied the goal, and will be delighted. Yuri saw red for a couple of rash challenges and may be ruing that this evening, but the result was the main thing, and that's what Pays Basque got.

SEASON 2013/14

100px-Basque_Football_Association_logo.png

PAYS BASQUE NATIONAL TEAM

England (A) - 10 September 2013

Pays Basque's first ever official away match could have been an easier one; they travel to Wembley where they will come up against the might of England. The Three Lions are confident of three points, but the Basque do possess a trick or two up their sleeves. Deschamps has rung the changes from the win over Moldova, with seven changes being made for his side's second friendly. These include Atlético Madrid's Raúl García, who replaces goalscorer Markel, and Athletic striker Gaizka Toquero. Here is the team in full:

Starting XI: Herrerín; Etxeita (Athletic), Echaide (Hércules), Oier (Osasuna), Estrada (Steaua); Raúl García (Atlético), Elustondo (R. Sociedad), De Marcos; Toquero, Gómez (Athletic), Agirretxe (R. Sociedad). Bench: Iraizoz, Sola, Susaeta, Gurpegi (Athletic), Albizua (Numancia), Ros, Prieto, Martínez, Markel (R. Sociedad), Isma (Sporting de Gíjon), Riesgo, Satrustegui (Osasuna).

2014NTEnglandScore.png

In the end, it wasn't to be for Pays Basque, who lost out to a superior team. Danny Welbeck scored twice, either side of Toquero's equaliser from the penalty spot, and Theo Walcott finished things off towards the end of the match. There were some good individual performances, from Toquero, Raúl García, and subsitute Kike Sola, and the Basque certainly weren't outclassed, mustering several shots on goal. In the end though, they simply weren't clinical enough, and that will need to change over the course of the next year, before they begin playing competitive matches.

SEASON 2013/14

100px-Basque_Football_Association_logo.png

LIGA DEL EUSKAL HERRIA

14 September 2013

2014LigaMatch4.png

Saint-Jean de Luz took the three points from this week's big game at the top, at home to Getxo KKE, looking comfortable throughout. Athletic Irún kept their good run going, while Aizkorri-Aratz claimed their first non-draw of the season in Tolosa. The shock result of the week was Santurtzi Nabigatzalleek securing a dramatic late win at home to Red Bull Bilbo, who were twice a goal in front.

21 September 2013

2014LigaMatch5.png

RB Bilbo were again on the receiving end of a surprise defeat, being beaten by a late goal away to Real Iruña. Aizkorri-Aratz returned to their one-point-ways with a creditable goalless draw in France against the leaders Saint-Jean de Luz, while Real Santurtzi and Athletic Irún kept the pressure on at the top, the latter moving into pole position.

28 September 2013

2014LigaMatch6.png

A stunning comeback from SD Hendaia away to league leaders Athletic Irún, completed by a last-gasp penalty from Jon Merino, saw the side in black and pink move into the top half of the table. Saint-Jean de Luz returned to winning ways and the table's summit with a victory in Bilbao, where the home side ended a miserable month without a point. Aizkorri-Aratz drew again, and along with the league leaders, are the only sides to remain unbeaten. Elsewhere, Real Santurtzi's win in Biarritz saw them move into second, and victories for Gasteizko Txirrindulariak and Getxo KKE meant that they are still just about in touch with the leaders as we move into October.

Aizkorri drawing 5 from 6 I'm finding funny, I hope for their fans sake at least they start having more interesting games!

Good to see Real Santurtzi keep pace with the leaders, hopefully we won't have to regret that loss at Bayonne

edit: Would it be possible to show the attendance for games in the fixture lists, would give a clue as to reputation/size of clubs. if you can't get it to show on the competition fixture summary screen I wouldn't worry, having to go in each fixture individually would be a pain.

I take 100% credit for the might Aizkorri staying unbeaten. We are clearly one of the top teams in this league, with one of the meanest defences around. Unfortunately, we're as useless as a bag of dented bells up front. Still, one win out of six ain't bad...

That Errenteria is starting to earn a reputation as one of the league's draw specialists isn't what I wanted, losing to our rivals at home was catastrophic, but good to finally get on the board with a win! I do wonder how the team is set up to play.

I wasn't gonna include the attendances in the results screenshots because it would greatly increase the width of them, and then the results themselves would be re-sized and be smaller. My plan was to include them in the team stats at the end of the season, but it wouldn't hurt to show them as they are after the first six matches:

2014OctoberAvAtt.png2014OctoberAvAttCap.png

Ouch, that was a horrible collapse for Biarritz against Bayonne. Leading, then destroyed by three goals in ten minutes. What happened there? I see the first goal was a penalty, did someone get sent off?

Nope, nobody got sent off, that would show along with goalscorers (as you may be able to see with other matches). Unfortunately for you it was just a terrible collapse!

Errenteria? Draw specialists? Aizkorri's wonderful five-out-of-six record spits on your four-in-six :p

I said one of them; you take the (probably unwanted) cake there :p

Glad to see Errenteria matches pulling large crowds though, good for the bottom line!

Press Release

SD Hendaia Chairman's reaction on statements Juan de Urbieta, chairman of Ahtletic Irun

Todor Muniain:

Juan keeps whining about the 2 late penalties, but apparently he forgot quickly that their penalty was caused by a swalbe and that we were controlling the whole game. I don't care how and when we scored, we deserved to win. In my opinion Juan should better invest his money in a chickenfactory instead of a footballclub.
