Latest news....

Ranieri has said in an interview on ChelseaTV that he has met Abramovich and is relatively happy now. Abramovich is satisfied that Ranieri can do a job, which at least taken at face value is promising. icon_smile.gif

RANIERI READY TO BUILD NEW ROMAN EMPIRE

Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri is keen to build the Blues into one of Europe's top clubs after clear-the-air talks with new club owner Roman Abramovich.

The Italian, who is currently preparing his squad for their Champions League qualifying campaign, says his job is safe despite speculation that he is to be replaced by a high-profile manager.

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and Roma's Fabio Capello are among the high-profile names put forward as potential candidates to replace Ranieri under Abramovich's regime.

But Ranieri told Chelsea TV he has been assured his position is secure. "Roman is a polite man. It was interesting because he now knows my ideas and I know his," he said.

"Roman said `I agree with your ideas, continue with your job' and so I will stay at Chelsea. There is now a good link - and it's very important for the future of Chelsea."

He continued: "I only spoke about football with him. We want to put Chelsea at the same level as the big teams in Europe - Real Madrid, Manchester United and Arsenal. We are ready."

Abramovich owns a controlling interest in Chelsea and is prepared to underwrite the club's massive debts and bankroll a spending spree from his personal fortune of £3.8billion.

--------------------------------------------

Sounds promising, just as long as we don't try too much, too soon.

In which case Del Bosque seems exactly the kind of coach you need - one who's used to working under a chairman who's in complete control. Yes?

Valdano's not the Chairman, and all Del Bosque really did was let the players play amongst themselves in the only real formation that was effective for them. He's OK, but not great.

Valdano's essentially Perez's voice on sporting matters though. So Del Bosque essentially coached the players that Perez and Valdano bought for him, and didn't have a great deal of say in who to sign. Can see a very similar situation developing at Chelsea, where the coach is responsible for dealing with the squad, but has little influence over bringing in new players. Del Bosque was hardly unsuccessful operating under similar circumstances. icon_smile.gif

Personally I don't see why they're even considering getting rid of Ranieri. I think he's done an excellent job.

It hard to make a solid judgement since he has not played that many league games but he looks very talented. He is pacy, can attack and defend, in defence he may have to improve his positioning but he is a good tackler, aggressive, can head the ball and is very calm, in attack he has got good distribution and will make runs forward.

West Ham fans despite the money will be very upset at the sale.

Looks like Geremi is set for a move to you lot as well. If you sign a really good midfielder and striker thats a hell of a team in my opinion.

If it is true that they are willing to loan him back to West Ham for a season, then that says something about the strength of their finances if they can afford to spend reportedly 4.5M on a player and then be willing to loan him out for a season.

I am gutted about the johnson sale as a west ham fan... we all know in hearts that this is the beginning of the exedos... cole next, then defoe... then division 2.

Apparently Johnson may be loaned back to us for next season though... so not sure about the Melchiot situation.

Seconded. Although if Chelsea get off to an average start this season, I can see him being replaced veryquickly.

From skysports.co.uk

Chelsea have failed in a bid for Dutch international midfielder Edgar Davids.

Blues boss Claudio Ranieri tried to make the Juventus star his first signing after Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's takeover at Stamford Bridge.

Juve transfer supremo Luciano Moggi, who has persistently said that the Oranje star is not for sale, confirmed Chelsea had made a formal bid to buy the midfielder.

"We have refused an offer from Chelsea which, I confirm, was made," Moggi said as he presented Juve's new signing, Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Appiah.

The 30-year-old only has one year left on his contract at the Stadio delle Apli, but Juventus are not willing to sell the former AC Milan and Ajax man.

In reference to oil tycoon Roman Abramovich, who has just bought Chelsea, Moggi quipped: "If Abramovich offered the moon for him he would still not sell him."

The signing of Appiah, signed from Parma after a highly successful year on loan with Brescia, had been seen as an indication that Davids' days may be numbered with the Bianconeri.

However, Moggi did not take that view today as he added: "Davids is part of the future of Juve."

it is too difficult to know what is a eral rumour and what can be taken with a pich of salt in a situation like chelskis... they've been linked with every single big money move happening in europe since abramovich bought in. and while i have no doubt there was probably some interest in some cases, to say that they have been active in all of them is twaddle... i honestly can't see that much happening in the short term, and the replacement of the current squad would be a long term thing.

especially as chelsea had their best season in a while where ranieri would tell anyone who listened that it was all down to the small turn over in his squad...

quote:
Chelsea in triple swoop

By Matt Hughes, Evening Standard

10 July 2003

Chelsea today made a sensational triple swoop for Christian Vieri, Glen Johnson and Geremi as new owner Roman Abramovich began his attempts to transform the club into a football superpower.

Look here too!

• Glen's rise to fame is a £6m fairytale

• Arsenal Reyes bid rejected

• Parker's the man for Spurs

• Gunners 'spew' over Harry loss

The signing of Johnson will be the first to go through as West Ham have accepted a £6million bid for their 18-year-old right-back. They are also finalising a deal for Real Madrid midfielder Geremi, but it is the stunning move for Vieri that catches the eye.

Standard Sport understands that Inter Milan striker Vieri was due to arrive at Stamford Bridge for a medical tonight. The Italian international was leaving Bologna airport in a private jet this afternoon after revealing to a close Inter teammate that he was leaving for Chelsea.

He played under Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri for one season at Atletico Madrid and his arrival will provide a huge boost following last week's departure of Gianfranco Zola.

It also emerged today that Italian champions Juventus refused a bid from Chelsea for Dutch international midfielder Edgar Davids.

Juve transfer supremo Luciano Moggi said: "We have refused an offer from Chelsea. If Roman Abramovich offered the moon for him, we would still not sell him."

However, Abramovich's move for Vieri provides the first evidence that the Russian billionaire will be true to his word to make Chelsea one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

The 30-year-old was the most expensive footballer in the world, having signed for Inter from Lazio for a world-record £32million in 1999 only a year after joining the Roman club from Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea will be Vieri's 11th club in an illustrious career that has seen him score goals wherever he has played.

He started his career at Italian club Prato and soon developeda reputation as a muscular-striker, earning him moves to some of the biggest clubs in Europe including Juventus, Atletico and Lazio.

Vieri won the scudetto and Champions League with Juve in 1997 but enjoyed a great season with Atletico Madrid, under the guidance of Ranieri, scoring 24 goals in 24 appearances.

Vieri will arrive in supreme form, having scored 30 goals for club and country last season as Inter finished second in Serie A, though he also attracted controversy.

He was accused of racially abusing Lomano Lualua during a Champions League match against Newcastle, but was cleared after a UEFA investigation.

He played under Sven-Goran Eriksson at Lazio, and the England coach no doubt had some kind words for him during his infamous meeting with Abramovich last week.

While Vieri has already achieved much in the game, Johnson's career is just beginning.

The Greenwich-born teenager made only 14 senior appearances for West Ham last season but, in that short time, he established a reputation as one of the English game's best young talents.

He had been tipped for senior international honours before the end of next season and Eriksson is known to rate the youngster highly and was considering calling him into the England squad this coming season.

Johnson's departure from Upton Park would be a severe blow for manager Glenn Roeder, but the reality is that relegation has cost the Hammers £20m and they are in no position financially to reject such an offer.

Cameroon international Geremi is also expected to cost Chelsea an initial £6m, rising to £9m depending on appearances.

The 24-year-old Real Madrid midfielder who has been on loan at Middlesbrough, can also play in defence and is surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu following the arrival of David Beckham.

Geremi, who has been at the Spanish club since August 1999, was in talks in May over a £9m move to Manchester United, but representatives from the two clubs failed to reach an agreement.

Middlesbrough wanted to make a permanent deal for the Cameroon star, but could not match Madrid's valuation.

bloody hell if that happens icon_redface.gif

I think Patrick Kluivert & Joe Cole, Scott Parker or Geremi will do for us.

Also we have been linked with Wayne Bridge & Scott Parker.

Kluivert/Vieri Hasselbaink/Gudjohnsen/Cole

Gronkjaer Lampard Joe Cole Geremi

Gallas Desailly Terry Johnson/Melchiot

Cudicini

Hows that!
