Timma Posted April 10, 2007 Share Posted April 10, 2007 So far its been a terrible start to the season and we are only 3 points above the relegation zone after ten games. Mainly thanks to a lack of goals which is the only real problem as the rest of the team looks to be quite good. I thought that we might of actually had a chance of doing well this season after narrowly losing in the playoff semis last season but the players must be as gutted as i am. So i'll use that as and excuse for the first 10 games and hope we push on for the rest of the season and try and get back towards the playoffs again. stabwest Posted April 14, 2007 Author Share Posted April 14, 2007 Yet again it's that time of the season again Each season, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire's Mark Johnson looks forward to Cambridge United's season and gives us his expert view on what's in store for the U's... now into this 9th season with the U's Davie Orr, must be have Cambridge Utd blood in him by now, he's stuck with this club thru thick and thin. Once again the club find themselves heading back into debt, which saw 9 players released and a further 4 sold and in return has saw Mark Wilson a young Scottish striker join from Hibs on free. Wilson has been capped for the u21s in Scotland and looks like a bright player for the future. I can't see us winning the league once again we'll be in the mix for a play off spot. My prediction this season is we take 6 points from Basingstoke Key players for us this season will be David Anderson and Johnny Lindsay and Mark Wilson, Anderson now into his 8th season with the club after coming thru the youth set up, looks set to add to his 58 goals. Building on their successful play off place last season Basingstoke town marched relentlessly to the Conference South title and automatic promotion, the Bas and manager Phillips had learned it was better to avoid the lottery of play offs. Once again Kyle McCoy was the driving force behind Basingstoke defying the odss and claiming the Conference South crown. His constant goal scoring ability saw Basigingstoke town finish on 93 points 15 points clear of their nearest rivals with a goal difference of +47. Basingstoke town now find themselves with a real challenge as with pre season over they find themselves with the same squad after manager Phillips was unable to lure any new faces to the Camrose or secure loan deals to strengthin the squad. Although the Bas started with promise rising to 3rd in their first 2 games they have since learned that the gulf between Conference South and Conference National is wide and find themselves sitting 21st after 10 league games with only 1 win, 4 draws and 5 looses. Manager Phillips knows he will have to turn these draws into wins if Basingstoke are to preserve their newly earned Conference National status. The road ahead will be rocky but manager Phillips is confident that the yet to score McCoy and his team mates will rediscover the form that made made them Conference South Champions last season. Well after the dizzy heights of 4th and the dissapointment of losing to the playoff champs Woking got back to work on trying to get out of the conference south, However its not as easy as thought. The playoff curse struck and a quater season of lack-lustre performances left us flagging at the wrong end of the table. Manager Simon Lynn acted swiftly and ditched alot of driftwood that had started to show this league was beyond them. Nathen Lowndes moved his knowledge into coaching because his legs no longer could go where he wanted them to when he wanted them to. Simon brought in a Niel McCallum to the frontline and he has had an instant impact to the squad scoring 7 goals in 6 games. Steve Price was a wage busting signing from Cambridge but has added pace and skill to the left wing. Will hoskins retunr to form from injury also has started to see Woking shoot away from the also rans and up to 9th, With half a season to play still Woking will be in confidant mood of getting closer to the playoffs. "Well id like to see us go right up but I think now our best shot is a playoff berth, This batch of players we have are young and talented and can hopefully drag this club out of the slums of this league. phlapster Posted April 22, 2007 Share Posted April 22, 2007 Although still sitting just outside the relegation zone in 18th, manager Paul Phillips believes the Mighty Bas have turned the corner. While still drawing games the team are now starting to convert those would be draws into wins and valuable three points. Strength in depth has been brought into the side with some much needed loan signings from their parent club Southampton and although McCoy has started to score goals again he still has not found the same rich vein of form as last season in Conference South. With McCoy short of goals Steve McGlinchy has stepped up and taken McCoys place, McGlinchy is another pacy striker and if he can continue scoring freely as he has done, their may be a new fan favorite at the Camrose. Manager Phillips will be looking for a strong finish to the season and though it seems a play off spot is unattainable he will be believing and installing the belief in his players that nothing is impossible for the mighty Basingstoke Town! Davie Orr is running down the touchline like a mad man, can you blame him his side are 2-0 up and on fire. Could this be the year we return only 43 mins left c'mon the U's 90th looking around the Farnborough fans are heading for the exits, maybe next year lads, 4th official holds up the board it indicated 4 minutes of time added on, keep it tight lads. looking around we've spotted a few ex-Cambridge players Dave Kitson, Micah Hyde Jody Craddock and Totti also there he’s jumping around with the fans. Timma Posted April 29, 2007 Share Posted April 29, 2007 For the first time in our thirty nine year history Stevenage Borough will be playing in the championsip after just managing to finish second by a single point. We are once again predicted to struggle and end up near the bottom but that was what i expected as some of the teams in the championship are much larger than Stevenage but i am confident that we will not be in the relegation places come the end of the season. The team I get was Welling United. I never heard of it as Willem II fan but we must start with the players that we have. The selection was nog very big so I bought some players. The first match was a good test against Margate of Rob. I won that match with 1-2 but it not very good. The next 2 matches I lost. So it was time for a new tactic. And with succes. I won against the number 1 then. It was 5-1 against Slough and it was a good match. But then I lost 2 matches again. stabwest Posted April 30, 2007 Author Share Posted April 30, 2007 oh my god league football, this should be heaven but it feels like HELL After 10 years of not being a league team Cambridge Utd finally returned. With a home tie against Accrington Stanley, with a crowd of over 4400, the U's much unchanged from the team that won the plays offs. this was to be the U's big day BUT Matt Harold had other ideas, 2 goals in the 1st half was enough to kill of the U's, this was followed by another defeat by Southend and a bore 0-0 against Halifax. Then the game that had Rob Knott moist in his pants, it was the moment all Cambridge fans feared the most, the return of Totti. Elphick kept Totti in his back pocket for most of the game, and the former Cambridge Utd player had a less than average game. The unlikely hero was Will McNally with his 30 yard postage stamp corner strike, that sealed a fine 1st league win in over 10 years and set the traveling U's into a frenzy. Currently sitting 15th and always looking over our shoulder is not much fun, on the other hand the fact of playing League football is helping the club, as the gates are up and the cash is starting to flow in. forget the silly F.A.T of course with the return of league football also meant the return of the league cup, which saw Watford up 1st at Abbey road after goalless game after 120mins it had to be settled by pens, with 3 Watford players missing there pens we cruised thro on pens 3-1. Next up was another Championship team WBA, Mark Wilson had gone 11 games without a goal, this lead to Orr’s outburst in the local rag, and it must have struck a chord with Wilson as it took him 75secs to score against WBA. Final score 3-2, bring it on \o/ Next up sees us play other team from the midlands Birmingham City in the 3rd rd. 500 and not out The game against Bury was a bit special as it was Orrs 500th game in charge of Cambridge Utd. Bury took the lead just before h/t before Cambridge took a 2-1 lead with goals thru McNally and Lourougnon mid way thru the 2nd half, damn Bury scored late on to level the game 2-2 He maybe the Chairman Lee Power does it again and offloads another star player Anthony Straker was sold to Mansfield for a fee of £250k Straker who signed just before the last game of 2007/08 on a free and when on to score in that game. But in the playoff semi final it was a total crushing pen shoot out defeat that crushed many gate fans! Now It Time For Gate To Bounce Back Margate Fc Manager has brough in 5 New players for this compaign to help his small squad get the job done and achieve National Football. It Has been Reported that Margate Chairman is now pushing knott for achievements with a wage budget of £5.868. Knott brought in Steve Brooker A very talented 22 year old Left sided Scotsman. Margate thought of many league club to get his signature.Has had 2 loan spells with the club already. Ian Cadwallader The 19 year old left winger arrived from Stevenage FC. Michael White The 18 year old former Reading Apprentice signed for Margate with big hopes and has played a championship football. David LivermoreKnott added experience to his squad with this addition, The former Arsenal and Millwall Man Now 35 still relishes the Chance to win trophies with Margate. Martin Styles Signed on a free transfer from Salisbury city has a great future ahead of him, Many Fans Question when he will be given the chance to make the left back slot his own. After 11 Games Margate sit 3rd but with Knott hoping to Have this league wrapped up and won with games to spare Margate will have to rise to the challenge and the young squad will have to stand up and be counted! Knott added... I truely feel as a club we have been very unlucky, with an average age of 23 i am sure this group of players can achieve great things. phlapster Posted May 12, 2007 Share Posted May 12, 2007 With their highest ever finish of 8th in the Conference National, Basingstoke manager Paul Phillips still has alot of work to do. There is still a gulf in class of 10 points that will need to be made up this season for the Bas to reach the play offs and a few new faces , brought or loaned will be needed. Kyle McCoy proved once again that he is not just a Conference South striker with another great season and the fans player of the year award. Wins will again be hard to come by but with the arrival of newly promoted Margate, 6 points is at least in the bag. Timma Posted May 12, 2007 Share Posted May 12, 2007 Stevenage have once again suprised everyone and managed to get a second promotion in a row and will be heading to the premiership next season after finishing second in the championship and also winning the league cup for the first time in their history. Stevenage have had such a great season with the best defence and third best goals scored in the division meant that they onlt dropped out of the promotion places once or twice. The only bit of dissapointment about the league will be the failure to win the league after being 13 minutes away from winning it but 2 late goals by west brom stopped any hoped of a double for the boro. Stevenage have a lot to look forward to next season with there first season in the premiership but also there first taste of european football after managing to win the league cup in a 2-1 victory over manchester united. It was Stevenages greatest ever day in their biggest match yet after they had impresively already koncked out 3 premiership teams includng a 3-0 thrashing of Blackburn and a 4-0 spanking of Sunderland but this was the greatest test yet. It looked as if it was going to be too much of a test for Stevenage as they fell behind early but they fought back and grabbed a goal to level things up just before the break. It looked as though it was heading for extra time but the boro got some massive luck when paul lynn put the ball into his own net and won it for the underdogs and give them only there 2nd ever trophy after the conference trophy the club won back in 1995/96.
