2nd of July 2006

On the eve of the 2006-7 season, it was announced that former Norwich City striker Lee Power would be the club's new chairman taking over from Brian Attmore's caretaking reign. And with this he was quick to bring in his new manager Davie Orr. which in return saw Robert 'Buzz Lightyear' Newman leave the club.

Orr's first crack at management looks to be a tough one, with Power already showing he has no problem in displacing people.

radio_banner_199_21.gif

speaking on on Radio Cambridgeshire Power has openly stated that Orr will have no money to play with and the club is in talks with a few clubs reguarding becoming a feeder club, with the likes of Arsenal, MK Dons and Charlton been rumoured to be involved in talks with the U's.

Power "this club has sunk to far, Cambridge United football club have a reputation for developing and discovering excellent young footballers. Since 1992, we have made more than £7,000,000 by selling players, but sadly we have nothing to show for this"

" when you think that just over a year ago we where in talks to merge with the Lilywhites, how we must move on and distance ourselves from such clubs"

Power "Orr job is to steady the ship and return us to the football league as soon as possible without getting us into debt"

Orr "am ready for this, fear no-one and let them fear you"

M.K Dons

31st July

Pete Winkleman releases a statement

"as of today M.K Dons with become a parent club for Cambridge United football club, we have formed a local partnership with the club, giving us platform to strenght our club with the help of Cambridge United football club"

Sam Baldock will become the first player to leave on loan, where he'll spent the whole of the upcoming season there"

radio_banner_199_21.gif

Orr " yes we did have talks with Arsenal and Charlton but the chairman felt the M.K Dons deal was much better for the club" icon_rolleyes.gif

goals coming from Trevor Robinson(7), Marcus Richardson(42) and Robbie Simpson(88)

by the end of August the U's had showed signs of becoming a serious challenger for the National Conference title sitting 6th.

wasn't until the 21st of October after defeating Halifax when the U's showed everyone that they meant business, by going top.

After 25 games in the league sitting 6th and 8 points adrift of Grays but well within reach of top spot, one thing for sure the media precition of Cambridge United finishing mid-table is looking well wrong.

Struggling Woking Appoint New Boss

17 games into the new season and Woking FC, a club expected to finish mid-table this season in the English Conference, found themselves rotting down in the relegation zone. Chairman John Buchanan decided drastic action needed to be taken and replaced manager Danny Dunn with the relatively unknown Scot, David McGowan in the hope of saving his side from the drop.

McGowan stated upon taking the job that he would, "instill a new confidence into the side" and promised to "guide the club to safety within the division." His first league game came on the 4th of November where he seemed to be guiding his team to all 3 points at Gravesend, had it not been for a last minute equaliser from Onome Sodje which sent the 33 year old away with a point in his opening game. Things were on the whole positive from here on in with McGowan registering 4 wins, 6 draws and 3 defeats, which has lifted Woking out of the relegation zone and up to 19th place.

There were moves from McGowan as part of his new plans to create a link with a parent club to help the club out with loan signings but this was thwarted by the Woking board for unknown reasons. With no money available to him, it will be interesting to see how the rookie boss copes with life at the Kingfield Sports Ground but he seems to have made a good if unspectacular start to his new profession.

All is well as it stands for McGowan but everything will hinge on whether he can steer Woking to safety his season. If not, the axe will not be long in falling.

Relegation battle for new St.Albans boss

Recently appointed St.Albans boss Joe Kiddle has realised that his challenge of keeping St.Albans up will be a real battle.

After a reshuffle in the line-up, and some new tactics, Kiddle has found his team sitting in 22nd place, 3 points off 21st placed Altincham. Kiddle knows it will not be easy, but he is confident that his lads can do the job. In his Weymouth post-match interview, Kiddle seemed up for the battle; "We have a great team spirit here at the club, and if we can pull a few results out of the bag, we stand a good chance of staying up. We were unlucky to lose against Exeter, but I was pleased with the way we battled, and carried that performance into the game against Stevenage where we picked up a good draw, and could possibly have won it if we were more clinical. It's just one game at a time at the moment, and we'll see what happens."

There is news in the St.Albans Observer that the St.Albans board are currently looking for a parent club link up.

Relegation "unthinkable" for new Northwitch boss

Newly appointed Northwitch Victoria manager Scott Strang has pleaded with his players to help keep the team up this season. As expected, last seasons Conference North winners are languishing at the wrong end of the table, a mere 8 points clear of rivals Altrincham who have 2 games in hand.

The importance of survival in financial and footballing terms is not lost on rookie boss Strang. "It's unthinkable that I could be responsible for our relegation after everyone's hard work to establish the club in this division. Our recent form hasn't been ideal but I've told the players that we have to treat every game like a cup final now and if we can stay difficult to beat, I think we'll do it.

Northwitch have a difficult run of games coming up including match ups with York, Kidderminster, Grays, Southport and Aldershot before finishing up the season with potential relegation deciding ties with Woking away and Altrincham at home. Scott Strang, for one, will be hoping it doesn't go that far.

Woking Reach Cup Final, Struggle For Safety Continues…

Woking's season seems to have took a turn for the better as they reached the FA Trophy final for the second year in a row and also moved 7 points clear of the relegation zone with some strong performances in the league. Fans are hoping the positivity surrounding the club just now can be carried into the final part of the season where they can secure their safety within the division.

Woking started to show their desire to reach the cup final back in the 3rd round of the FA trophy. They dominated against lowly Harrogate, putting 4 goals past the Conference North side, but dodgy defending meant they also conceded 3 in a thrilling tie. The next round saw them come up against high-flying Exeter at home, which proved to be another great game. Woking took the lead through Shola Oyedele's 3rd minute penalty but Exeter turned the game around and where leading 2-1 at half time. McGowan went all out in the last 10 minutes and it paid off as goals from Kevin Davison and Brian McGinty ensured his side's place in the semi finals. Aldershot were the opposition this time, and were clear favourites to advance to the final. Both legs were very tight and Brian McGinty's 45th minute goal in the second leg proved to be the tie winner.

This gives Woking great confidence going into the final but an equally tough test awaits in the form of Morecambe, who are sitting quite comfortably in mid-table. A leading member of the Woking Supporter’s Club said the cup run came, " as a good distraction for the fans, players and manager in a difficult season for Woking, and winning the tournament for the 4th time would be a great achievement. However, keeping this clubs place in the English Conference remains top priority. "

Woking still sit 20th in the league table in mid-March and there is still some worry amongst fans that they could slip back into the relegation zone. However, recent results have eased those fears. Manager McGowan led his side to victories against Aldershot and Southport and also gained a point at York – all 3 clubs leading sides in the division. Confidence is high at the club and a few more wins should see Woking start to move up the table. The next test is a home tie against first placed Grays, where they will be tested to their limits.

Leading Woking to safety has to be McGowan's first priority but a cup win in his first season would no doubt be a good achievement. A bit of consistency seems to be all that is needed, something his side have found hard all season.

Woking have 10 league games remaining and will play Morecambe in the FA Trophy Final on the 20th May.

Play off aim for Stafford Boss

During the appointments of the summer, Josh Hall was introduced as the new boss of ambitious Stafford Rangers. The basic Semi-Proffesional Conference National Team were predicted to finish around 17th, avoiding the relegation zone. The ambitious squad went 8 games unbeaten scoring 15 goals and conceding 12 taking 14 points at the start of the season. Stafford then went on a drawing run and were unable to take points at any game. Hall compensated this with his cup form, progressing to the FA Cup 2nd round and the 3rd round of the FA Trophy. In a tightly contested mid league table, the Stafford boss commented,"i believe that we can push for a play off place. We may look like we are in twelth position but are players want to get into the Football League and show what they have to offer. A run of good results and maybe we can do it." Hall has also comented that he believes that Woking boss McGowan had impressed him and wished him every luck in succeding his quest to taking the FA Trophy and avoiding relegation

finished 10th in the league.

after the great start we had, we started to lose it once we started picking up injuries

the link with MK Dons turned out well with Sam Baldock netting 19 times in 40 games.

with no major signings planned for the new season I'll be forced to wheel and deal in the frees and loan deals, and of course the finances still in the red doesn't help much either.

So Far, So Good For McGowan

After leading his side to safety and a cup final, Woking manager David McGowan set his sights on a mid-table finish in this seasons English Conference and is doing well so far. Many fans were doubtful of McGowan's ability to lead the club to safety when he was appointed back in November 2006 but there are very few doubters now. The team finished in a comfortable 17th place and were unlucky not to pick up some silverware as they lost to Morecambe on penalties in the FA Trophy final. With the club heavily in debt, and with no money to spend on new players, McGowan had to rely on the bosman market to bolster his squad. Here is Woking's summer transfer activity in full:

The new-look Woking side got off to a terrible start to the new season as they crashed 4-1 to cup final rivals Morecambe. Two excellent results then turned things around as they beat Macclesfield 2-1 away from home and Exeter 2-0 at The Kingfield with loan signing James Dunne on the score sheet. A terrible 4-0 defeat then followed this as Woking lost to bottom side Weymouth. Inconsistency seemed to be creeping into the side at this early stage as two days later they beat Burton 5-0. Their latest result was a 2-1 home win against Oxford, where new striker Tipton grabbed both goals.

Even though there were some bad results amongst the first few games, Woking fans must have faith in their manager as he continues to turn around the clubs fortunes. Of the new signings, Dunne from Arsenal certainly looks the most promising even though he is only 17 years old. Woking next play Davie Orr's Cambridge side at The Kingfield in what should be an excellent game.

Woking are currently in 5th place in the English Conference with 12 points from 6 games.

its been a poor start this season, losing the 1st three games of the season to Rushden, Stockport and Kidderminster by the odd last min goal.

only postive facts so far this season is Trevor Robinson last seasons player of the year is in a rich vain of form, and the kids are being given there chance to show what they can do in the 1st team, with the likes of David Anderson and Pat Stewart starting games.

the aim is still the play-offs but with the crippling debt mounting, our plans could be forced into change at Chritmas time.

next game against high flying Woking.

1st March 2008

16th in the table and 5 points above the drop is not where i though i would be at this stage of the season. althou things of late have seen Cambridge Utd football clubs results change for the better sorta icon_rolleyes.gif

with games left against the likes of

York
Gravesend
Oxford
Dag & Red
Northwich

a full and fit squad will be a huge boost, only major doubt of late is Trevor Robinson with a twisted ankle, barr that i DO expect to keep my conference status come the end of the season with the U's

with the club getting ever closer to £1m in debt, I've been told to offload personal in order to help balance the books.

Air Of Excitement Surrounds High-Flying Woking

Pundits up and down the country were predicting mid-table obscurity at best for Woking at the beginning of the season, now with the team sitting in a play off spot at the start of March, many are beginning to take this side seriously. They have been fairly consistent all throughout the season with their home form particularly impressive, wining 10 of their 16 games at The Kingfield. Manager McGowan has relied on his trustworthy 4-4-2 formation for every game, with a mix of experience and youth helping Woking turn their fortunes around.

When the Scot took over the reigns in October 2006, Woking were rotting in the relegation zone of The Conference and he was charged with the task of guiding the club to safety, which he did. Now, just a year and a half later, promotion is a real possibility in the near future and the fans are optimistic that McGowan is the man to lead their club into a new era. He has certainly exceeded all their expectations this year, which were for him to again avoid relegation.

Only one new face arrived in Woking in the January transfer window, Ben Davies who is a right-sided midfielder. He has already made an impact at the club scoring 3 goals in 10 appearances from the wing and putting in some solid performances. Brian McGinty is the clubs leading goalscorer with 11 goals with summer signing Tipton not far behind on 8. The squad looks especially good in the midfield where James Dunne and James Hunt have struck up a good partnership. Loan signing Dunne has hit 6 goals this season and Woking will be hoping to secure his services again next year.

Woking began February with a disappointing 2-1 away defeat to Cambridge before beating York 3-2 at The Kingfield, McGinty bagging 2 of the goals. Next up was another 3-2 victory this time over struggling Gravesend with Woking finishing the month on a low, crashing to a 3-1 loss at Halifax.

There is another 13 games to play in the Conference and Woking are facing some tough ties ahead including an away day at leaders Rushden. If they can keep up their good form then there is no reason why Woking can't make the play offs. Who knows where they can go from there, one thing is for sure, the McGowan era has rejuvenated what was an ailing side and the future is certainly bright.

Woking are currently in 4th place in the English Conference with 56 points from 33 games. They next face Dagenham and Redbridge at home.

overall a bad season althou things did start to look up at the tail end of the season with a 9 game unbeaten run which saw us steer away from the drop. really need a out and out striker and a matching winning centre midfield master to help fill the gaps.

Dion Dublin finally called the curtain on his career and gladly took up a role as a 1st team coach along side Nicky Eaden who quit after playing 535 games for the likes of Barnsley, Biringham, Wigan Nottingham Forest and of course Cambridge, while Dublin notched up 585 with 183 goals, with 57 of them scored in the colours of the U's.

plans are to release a few players and tighten up the 1st team squad.

still deeply in debt and looking for a way out. icon_rolleyes.gif

After winning the league two years in a row Grays in League one this season. Grays manager Orhun Ozdemir said "Our aim for this season is a playoff spot." before the season but media just laughed him as almost everyone thinks League one is too good for them, just like they did think last year. After first 5 games relegation candidates Grays Athletic proved them right as they were sitting in the 20th place with just 5 point. "We have the enough talent in our squad we just gotta believe ourselves and get used to the way they play in league one." Ozdemir said and with new tranfers like Maynard from Leyton Orient Grays didnt give up and they are now 12th with 21 points after 14 games with one game in hand they are just 6 points behind the leader Colchester.
