looks like a good team and formation you've got there george

do you have the opputunity to sign jack cork at the end of the season for a cut down price btw?

was just wondering because he can probably become a really good player for you

and i think you should look to get some new wingers, seeing as you have great aerial strength you may as well have people putting some good balls in :D

Yeah, great opening post.

But these Southampton vs. Portsmouth posts are getting annoying.

Stop now, go to the Football Forum for this.

Well a couple of years ago the clubs fortunes were the other way round. we got all the stick for being shight. away with a team like that why are southampton in the bottom half of the championship?

If anyone is looking for a few loands to strengthen the squad I recommend the following players:

(All of which are likely to come to St. Mary's)

Steven Smith (Rangers LB)

Daryl Murphy (Sunderland AML, ST)

Darron Gibson (Man United CM)

Heidar Helguson (Fulham ST)

James Tomkins (West Ham CB)

Craig Beattie (West Brom ST)

Carlton Cole (West Ham ST)

Mark Randall (Arsenal CM)

Fred Sears (West Ham ST)

Henry Lansbury (Arsenal CM)

I highly recommend that you extend Jack Cork's loan till the end of the season. Although you will have to pay his wages (1.5k p/w) it is well worth while.

As i'm planning a long term game with Saints I may not use the loan system much as I feel this will not give the chance for the likes of Oliver Lancashire, Joseph Mills, Nathan Dyer, Jake Thomson, Jamie Hatch, Oscar Gobern, Jamie White, Matthew Paterson a chance to develop with first team football.

For me the strongest 11 at the start of the game would probably be:

Davis

James Svensson Cork Skacel

Schneiderlin Surman

McGoldrick Lallana Holmes

John

A question to anyone who may know, if I offload say Stern John (10K p/w) would this means that I could transfer the wages into over 500k in the transfer kitty? Or is that not how it works?

1.How do you get your players to interchange like the saint style.. supposedley like arsenal?

2. I wouldn't count Bournemouth as any sort of rival?.. i actually root for them.

3. I don't think the youngsters that are/coming through are good enough... just because were not in the prem doesn't mean are youth players shouldnt be very good. look at the players we have produced in recent years.

4. Where does this affiliation with the chinese team come from ive never heard of it.

5. i believe skacels first name is rudi.

Please take this as constructive criticism. Thanks Scotty

1) In player intstructions you can get them to switch with teammates throughout matches

2) It is only in the game as a minor rivalry. There is more rivalry in a Saints/Bournemouth game than there is in a Saints/Grimsby game for example isn't there? This is down to geographical location. So I felt this was worth the inclusion.

3) Saints youth on FM09 have some very good players with high potential. One of the best teams in the Championship in terms of potential

4) See this http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/search/?mode=movenav&page_id=4416

5) Rudolf Skacel is his actual name. Rudi is a shortened version of Rudolf and is a nickname.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks Mattlegod!

Also another question im trying out jan p's tactics of interchanging forwards... i have dyer and skacel.. my attacking wingers to switch with lone striker... but i also have my full backs to switch round with my attacking wingers.... will my wingers drop back when my full backs go up or will they nly swap with the striker?

sorry if its confusing!

also mattsfc i sold kelvin davis to mancity and bialkoski to real betis.

I have gone Southampton on the demo and I am enjoying it so much I am planning a long term game with them in the future.

I tried a 3-5-2 formation but now I am planning on trying something new as we are struggling too much.

I only made two transfers selling Rudi Skacel to Wolves for 1.5 million and bringing in George Boyd for 500k. He has been good, scoring on his debut. I have also signed Heidar Helguson on loan for a month as we are struggling in that area a little.

How much did everyone get for Bradley Wright-Phillips? and who else have you sold?

Here are a number of players that would come to St. Mary's, and fit the Southampton mould, should you be able to afford the transfer fees:

Joe Lewis (gk, Peterborough)

Paul Huntington (cb, Leeds)

Tommy Spurr (cb, rb, lb, Sheffield Wed)

Neal Eardley (rb, Oldham)

Grant Basey (lb, Charlton)

Ben Parker (lb, Leeds)

Tommy Rowe (lm, Stockport)

James McCarthy (cm, Hamilton)

Giles Barnes (cm, rm, lm, Derby)

Morgan Schneiderlin is quality, he is such a brilliant playmaker, could become real quality. I originally thought Lallana would be the best player but Schneiderlin has exceeded all expectations.

He has the potential to be Premiership class. Guarntee it.

I would say between 500k-800k, someone posted above that they bought Boyd for 500k. Where would you be playing him?

I wrote a short list of good young players worth buying earlier on in this thread.

I would be playing him at AMC. i will take a look. Where would you play him?

try and sign Gerard hes a good signing for free.... id try peter murphy he looks good he was on 08.. also maybe Robert Hastings?

i also released c perry because nobody wanted him and hes on 4k p/w

I also sold Gillette

and Euell i sold to Sheff wed because he was on something like 10k and doesn't warrant it in comparison to other in his position.

Also for Skacel is a good sell because Surman can easily replace him if he wasn't already.

I also got load signings of M Chopra and Man City Brazilian Glauber.. made a good debut.

Id also try and get Zakuani on loan hes doing well for me

Gauber and Zakuani are good because Svensson, Wotton and Thomas were being out paced and 1 of these accompanying them helped a little although they aren't extremely fast themselves. It just looks like you could be having the same problem!

I think ill most likely start my Soton again now i have a feel for it though!

Well that's my 2pence worth!

Ive just brought in a Finnish 20yr old called Juha Hakola 110k he looks good make sure agree a bid on the first or second offer or the price seems to sky rocket as with peter Murphy for me.

Also just got ex Lazio , Valencia and Fiorentina Midfielder Stefano Fiore on a free.. although he is on 10k a week. Looks as if he could do a job for the season at the age of 33.

Fantastic thread this, big well done to the thread starter. I've already completed the demo once with Newcastle, was wondering who to start over with. And you guys have inspired me to choose Southampton.

I'm going to continue the Newcastle save once the full game comes out as I'm really enjoying it, depending on how this one goes I might well end up sticking with Southampton as well.

Will keep you guys updated.

Signed Vakhit Orazsakhedov 16yr old from Turkmenistan plays for Rubin.. out of contract available for free.. cant move untill 2010 though. His stats dont look that great but im hoping for a drastic improvement.. and my scouts said he could play for a premiership side although i doubt i it.. i took a punt! Its of little cost to me to have a go. Although the scout who said this only has a PA + PP rating of 13&13.

( I haven't managed to sign him on my Southampton save)Also out of contract 16 yr old Czech Vaclav Kadlec plays for Sparta Prague looks as if he could turn out decent with good training. I think a side outside of the premiership will struggle to get him to sign.

Yep, I will be posting about my progress in this thread. I play a network game with my mate - he's always Wolves and I'm Southampton. This is the first time I have played an FM demo so my strategy was to find out who at the club were the best players and what shape they would fit into rather than buying new players. If you want to play as Southampton I think the best thing to do is go for loans, even freebies may put too much strain on your wage budget at the beginning. There are no sugar-daddies on the horizon for Saints so you will have to make sacrifices early and try to get finances in order.

The players definitely suit the 4-2-3-1 that Poortvliet uses with the real Saints.

GKs: Kelvin Davis and Bart Bialkowski are very good goalies and I would recommend having Davis as number 1 with Bart as very capable backup. Davis was praised by the media throughout my demo stint and is probably worth his 7k a week wage. Bart is on a low wage with some potential and is worth keeping.

LBs: Andrew Surman's a good full-back and suits an attacking formation. I don't use the assistant feedback much but when I got mullered by Birmingham at St.Andrews he was suspectable to getting skinned so in the big away games perhaps he could be left out. I found Joseph Mills to be very solid and is good backup, maybe he can even play when you play a bit more defensively.

RBs: Jack Cork is on loan from Chelsea and I found him to be the best right back. When I tried to renew his loan in January, I didn't have enough funds (this is without buying or selling anyone in the whole game) so if you want him to be there till the end of the season, someone will have to go. Lloyd James is a natural right back on the game and anyone who has seen him this season knows that's not the case ;) However, he too is a good attacking full-back on a low wage and is good to have at the club. Personally, though I found he hardly won a header for 6 months. If Cork leaves, Jamie Hatch may not be good enough to step up to backup.

CBs: Michael Svensson and Oliver Lancashire were my first choice centre-backs. My home defence record was fantastic (when I finally found my best team) and these two were like rocks. Lancashire is only on 600 a week and is definitely worth a place in the first XI. Paul Wotton and Chris Perry are both on 4k a week and are fine to stay and be backup to the 2 centre positions. Aaran Racine looks like he could be one for the future. You can get a fee for Wayne Thomas and he is no better than Wotton or Perry so can leave.

CMs: Morgan Schniederlin is a must. Simon Gillett is much like real-life in he will intercept passes and dominate the midfield (my assistant agreed). The two compliment each other well and their wages don't even add up to 3k. Anthony Pulis may not be liked by Saints fans even though he has never played a game but is only on 800 a week and you won't get a fee so is worth keeping. James and Wotton both can move from defence to the midfield and cover while Jake Thomson, another youngster and a good passer of the ball, can take the Schniederlin creative role.

LW: Rudi Skacel was my top scorer and was by far my best player. You will get offers for him but try to resist and you will be rewarded. Lee Holmes was injured for most of my game but is on 4k a week and is creative backup. Tactics are important to get the best out of this position and the right wing, obviously.

AM: Adam Lallana started off badly but grew on me as the game advanced and became a regular. This was because David McGoldrick was injured and played there but Lallana took his place and McG didn't get it back. Lallana is a good passer but won't score many goals. On the other hand, McG will score goals from that position being a good "shooter". Both are on 4k and it is close between them - good competition.

RW: Romain Gasmi is injured when you start but he comes back and will perform. He has an agreed price of 800k and it's questionable whether he is worth that. Jake Thomson's best position is right wing and he will perform when in the team. Both players wages are low and they will do well.

ST: Bradley Wright-Phillips is somewhat of a hate icon on the South Coast and most will sell him but I recommend keeping him. He was top assister in the squad and chipped in with 5 goals himself having an avg rating of 7.26. Plays the lone role well. Matthew Paterson and Jamie White are both good backup on low wages. Paterson is probably the best finsher at the club and can only improve. Along with Aaran Racine at centre back, Paterson and White are worth keeping hold of for the future. In January, Marek Saganowski returns due to rejecting a contract offer from Aab so that is another 8k on the wage bill so you will have a decision to make there in January. Could be good to hold MP and JW back and have BWP and Saga battling it out for the striker role.

Sell: Tommy Forecast, Jason Euell, Stern John, Nathan Dyer, Wayne Thomas. You will get fees for Forecast, Dyer and Thomas while John and Euell both get 10k a week and neither earn it. Altogether you'll knock 20k off the wage bill and probably get about 500k in fees.

saintsyk5.th.pngthpix.gif

As you can see I did go on a pretty good run of form, especially defensively.

So that's my squad assessment and hopefully it'll help those wanting to start a Saints game even if you do ignore it.
