Background

Founded in 1881, Watford are a professional English club currently playing in the Coca-Cola Championship. The club play their home games at Vicarage Road and possess good training facilities and a good youth setup. The reserve team play at Meadow Park. The club is affectionately known as The Hornets, The 'Orns or The Yellow Army, and retains a fierce rivalry with Luton Town.

As a club which enjoyed its best spell of success during the 1980's and their last competition win coming as recently as 1998, The Hornets are a club with a growing history. Watford finished runners-up in the English top division for the only time in 1983, finished runners-up in the FA Cup in 1984, finished runners-up in the English 2nd tier for the only time in 1982, and won the English 3rd tier in 1969 and 1998 and finished runners-up on one occasion.

General Finances

The bank balance of Watford is £124k, which is one fo the lowest in the league. This makes managing The Hornets reasonably challenging. Despite this low balance, good management skills will be able to increase this quite quickly.

Budgets

The minimum expectation is that the team reach the Playoff of the Coca-Cola Championship. As a result of this, the transfer budget for Watford is set at £150k, no matter what you feel you can achieve. Your weekly wage budget is £109k, but as the club is currently spending £115,665 on wages per week you will need to cut down.

ST - Moses Ashikodi (on loan at Hereford)

Squad Analysis

GK - Richard Lee is excellent, but is out for around 2 months at the start. Mart Poom and Scott Loach are excellent backup, so you should be able to cope here. Jonathan North is a good player for the future, and could become excellent. Lastly, Bontond Antal looks reasonably good for his age, so when possible try and loan him out to get him some first team experience.

Youngster to watch: Scott Loach

DR - Lloyd Doyley and Adrian Mariappa are both great for the Championship. Mariappa looks like he could turn out to be the better of the two. However if you prefer to have attaking fullbacks, you will need to look for a replacement. Neither of them are great attacking wise, but are up there with the best at this standard at the defensive work.

Youngster to watch: Adrian Mariappa

DL - Matthew Sadler is a very good player, and should do the job. Unfortunatly Jordan Parkes isn't the best, coaches only rate him as having the potential to be a leading Championship right back. Although they say right back, I think he's better at LB.

Youngster to watch: Jordan Parkes

DC - Jay DeMerit is the standout defender in the squad, and is the captain of the squad. 'Captain America' as he is known to fans normally seeks move away from club early on, and you should be able to get offers of £2mil for him. This would have to be a deal, with the financial system as it is. Leigh Bromby is the second starter at centreback in the squad. He's an excellent player too, and his long throws will be able to help you in attack. Cedric Avinel looks to be good backup, and should do well for you. Despite this you could easily get better backup than him. Mariappa and Doyley can both cover here too, Mariappa the more natural of the two here.

Youngster to watch: Cedric Avinel

MR - Tommy Smith is one of the best players in the team, but apart from him there is no real quality in this position. Lionel Ainsworth is average, and Ross Jenkins needs time to develop. A buy would be useful for here, but no-one expensive as Tommy is the undisputed first choice.

Youngster to watch: Ross Jenkins

ML - Jobi McAnuff is the best player here, and can come up with quite a few assists aswell as a goal or two. Jon Harley is also very good, and can be used as first team left back or left midfield well. He's a good player, and is well worth a place in the first team. That means that both Jobi and Jon can play ML well, so you don't really need someone else here. Billy Gibson could become great too, I'd reccommend sending him out on loan to get some experience.

Youngster to watch: Billy Gibson

MC - John Eustace is FB on this game, IMO one of the best players in the team, or even the league. John-Joe O'Toole is a brilliant player too, and would warrent a place in the team. Lee Williamson is great, but you could probably sell him for £1.4mil, and for that, with the backup you have, it may be worth selling. Gareth Williams can be excellent, when fit. He would be excellent backup, as would Al Bangura. Williams and Bangura could both be excellent potentially, with both excellent backup.

Youngster to watch: John-Joe O'Toole

ST - Grzegorz Rasiak is probably the best striker at the club, as if players right he can score many goals in a season. There is an agreed price of £1.3mil for him, so it may be worth trying to tie him down permanently in January if you get the chance. Money permitting, of course. Tamas Priskin is a good player now, and if you are playing with two upfront he should partner Rasiak. Again, if played right he could score quite a few goals. Will Hoskins is adequate backup for them, but looking at his stats he could be more suited to an attacking midfield role. Youth in this area is the strongest of all, with Theo Robinson, Liam Henderson and Lewis Young all having good stats for their ages. Like most good youngsters, try and get them out on loan to get experience. Perhaps keep Robinson in your reserves and use him as your backup player as well as sometimes in the Cups.

Youngster to watch: Lewis Young

Glad to see this here!

I am a watford fan and have just started the demo. apart from the bugs i really do love it and the new match engine.

Players that you must try and keep/ have proved themselfs in the demo.

Tommy Smith

Jay DeMerit

Grzegorz Rasiak (on loan from Southampton)

John-Joe O'Toole

Areas of the team that need cover! Watford lack wingers,Tommy Smith and Jobi McAnuff are good enough for the first but we lack in depth. Center defence is also area we lack in depth. Jay DeMerit will try and move on, you should try and get 2 mil for him and get 2 more decent center defenders if you cant keep him.

We are top heavy in midfield, you can shift a few players on here to reduce the wage bill.

My team

.........................................gk

....................................Richard Lee

................. rb............cd................. cd...........lb

....... Lloyd Doyley...Leigh Bromby....ay DeMerit...Jon Harley

................rw.................cm................cm..................lw

.........Tommy Smith John Eustace..John-Joe O'Toole..Jobi McAnuff

................CF.................striker

........Grzegorz Rasiak ...Tamas Priskin or Will Hoskins

I have found that 4-4-2 fits the watford team the best as we dont really have the players to use any other formation.

I try and find a new right back as my first signing and better left winger then drop Jobi McAnuff and Lloyd Doyley to the bench.

Thats it for now will report back when i have more time ingame!

Glad to see this here!

Hi:)

I'll be playing as Watford quite a bit on 09, so hopefully this thread will survive.

Good analysis of the team, I'll be adding to the OP when I've finished a few months.

Good luck on your game!

EDIT: Getting some pics from the club site, refreshed it and seen that Boothroyd's been sacked:eek:

Who would you say is the biggest prospect, Theo Robinson, Lewis Young and Liam Henderson?

EDIT: I chose Lewis Young

EDITED EDIT: I've completed most of it now, except player recommendations.

Well i must say i am very pleased with watfords youth team many of the players look like they can become pretty decent for the champ and a few for the prem!

my selection for biggest prospects are.

Scott Loach. doing the job for me at the mo while lee and poom are out. will be better then them both by the age of 25

John-Joe O'Toole my 1st choice midfieder at the age of 19..will be on to the prem soon, in real life to.

Ross Jenkins. Awesome stats for a 17 year old midfieder

Billy Gibson. A talented youth team winger who can play on both sides.

Dale Bennett. Right back, looks decent at his age. I think he will become a above average championship player

Theo Robinson. striker. For me the jury is still on this guy i think how he turns out depends on how you loan him and train him.He does have something it depends of you can get it out of him.

Lewis Young. Striker. in real life we sold his brother to villa for just under 10mil, now is villas biggest earner! the coachs in our academy say he has more talent then his brother did at the same age. and seems to in the game to. Again i think you will have to train and play this guy right to develop him as good as ashly young. could possible be the best of the bunch!

I believe we have taken on a other Young family member, tho still at a wee age. I hope the parents keep breeding em!

Well thats my round up of our youth players.

I will keep posting on this thread as i learn more about the game and the team.

Player i have sold and brought in.

As watford you are broke and need to reduce the wage bill, I have sold the player i did not want and was on high wages.

Sold

Gareth williams. £230k not needed

Jobi McAnuff. £1.5m the money is good and be replaced easily

Lloyd Doyley. same as above

Jay DeMerit. £1.6m He did not want to stay and the money was good

Adrian Mariappa £425

Total £4.2m

Brought in

Celestine Babayaro. Free.29 year old left back

Josh kennet. £3k 20 year old, Can play all the way down the right hand side, good youngster

Sergei Terehhov.£60k 33 year old, plays on both wings great first team player

Carlos Tordoya.£75k 21 year old sweeper/defender. better then jay demerit!

Marcos Cáceres £140k 22 year old defender/fullback better then jay and Lloyd put together hehe

Sebastián Abreu. free.31 year old striker. Can play as a target man or striker, best free i have seen

Mascio £28k 17 year old center mid. He is a deadball specialist and ready for the first team

Henri Anier £50k 17 year old strike, will be a real cracker when older!

Ahmed Yanuzi £375k 20 year old forward. a young Dennis Berkham.

Dave parton. free from england trails 16 year old goal keeper

Dan Smith. free from england trails 21 year old left defender

Total spent £725k

The club are in debt so you only get back a small bit of money you make from selling players, out of the 4.2m i made i think i got back just under 1m and remember to keep that wage bill down! Im 9.4k under my wage bill, was over by 6k when i started.

So i have replaced many of my first teamers with better players on lower wages and made the club just over 3m.

|I must thank LincolnCanary's general championship thread http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php?t=55626 for helping me find better cheaper players!

Good transfers, I still haven't done the recommendations so do you have any?

Also what do you think about the squad analysis?

The squad analysis is pretty much bang on.... for a gooner! :p

Been a follower of the mighty orns for 18 years now, at the moment its a pretty worrying time more so then i can remember...aidy (our manager) has walked or been sacked, a huge ammount of money has just vanished! leaving us close to going into admin and elton john and resigned from being life president (what ever that is) in a hissy fit with the board.

So if anyone is going to play watford team in 09 then be assured you HAVE to trim the wage bill to stop the club from sliding further into debt and u have to cut some of the dead wood out to. plus u only get 150k to play with at the start.

i cant seem to be able to sell poom evening offering him to other clubs on a free, no one wants him and he is a very high earner and at most he is the 3rd choice lee and loach are better

you can pretty much sell any other player you wish with no probs.

Im not sure what you mean by recommendations ? do you mean players to bring into the club ? if so then the ones i have listed above are very good considering the money i paid ..some real gems

Mascio the 17 year chap i got for 28k is a really good find i recken by the time he is 20 you would be able to get 10 to 15 mil for him

At the moment i have stoped playing the demo as i have 10 players out with injurys most of them are the new guys i brought in to :( it was a bit soul destroying lol..I hope this injury bug gets fixed in the patch on release day!

:D! I go to Watford matches quite often TBH, so know quite a lot about the team etc. Gutted about Aidy, he's the best thing that's happened to this club recently. Hopefully Malky can do a job!

Yeah, the most important thing is to cut the wage bill. I'll take some of those names once I've written the recomenations.

Thanks:)

Any good tactics for Watford? I've brought in some creative midfielders, and am wondering if I should switch to an attacking 4-4-2. But I don't really have the wingbacks for it. Eh. The board has pretty high expectations to begin with...

3/4 of the way through my first season with these. Was taken over only after a couple of months by a wealthy Argentinian investor so my bank balance is around £25million. No debts to pay off (YAY!) All in all i've been given around £10million to spend on players, they upgraded my youth facilites to the best possible & upgraded the training facilites too.

I kept hold of DeMerit, and its paying off super defender he is. Although his contract will run out at the end of the season worth the risk keeping him and then hoping to offer him a new one at the end of the season, rather than selling him right at the beginning and searching for a worthy replacement.

WOW! Isn't Harley a left back/midfielder!

Yeah he is, he was playing DL then!

But tbh the opposition were crap:D

Does anyone know a decent tactic for watford? Im **** at making my own..

I always use my own tactics now, however bad I do.

What I do is pick a few players that are the top players(for Watford it's probably DeMerit, Smith, O'Toole, Rasiak) and try and find a formation that fits them in. I always have a back 4, never had success with anything else.

GK: Lee

DR: Mariappa

DL: Sadler

DC: DeMerit

DC: Bromby

MR: Smith

ML: McAnuff

MC: O'Toole

MC: Williamson

ST: Rasiak

ST: Priskin

is Watford best lineup imo, so I would ignore all those flashy formations and stick with the traditional 4-4-2.

I have no idea if there is a good 4-4-2 for download, it might be worth looking in the Tactics and Training Forum.

I've got a MASSIVE problem with Watford. I have played numerous different saves with Watford and all 3 patches on FM '09. Most times I start off brightly but soon enough, I get into a slump that seems to be totally unrecoverable from.

No matter what I try (tactics, formations, signings etc.) I simply cannot succeed as Watford. I had a major thought though. On the information screen, it says that the media prediction is 4th. Well that's crazy seeing as we rode our luck last season and right now in real life we are in the relegation zone.

I know I am not bad at this game but the only conclusion I could come up with is that the team are just not good enough to get to the playoffs, a lot of chopping and changing in terms of transfers are always needed. Maybe there is added pressure on the team on this game because they are not very good yet they are predicted to get 4th place.

The team ALWAYS lose faith in me around christmas and it is extremely frustrating seeing as I have always been good at this game but this seems like a big bug or something.

Has ANYONE experienced the same problem????????

Link to post

The game doesn't seem to take the financial position into the expected position, if it knew how little money Watford have then they would be predicted 15th max imo.

I just suggest you pick a first 11 and play them whenever possible, hopfully they will start to work well together.

Try downloading a tactic and develop thqat for your team, too.

Hey guys, just started my Watford save on FM09. So just a quick update on my transfers and whats happened so far...

Transfers In:

As you know we don't have alot of money to spend and with only 15% of sales being given back to you its quite difficult.

but i managed to get some decent players...

Matej Rapnik - 45k (a good defender with alot of potential)

Tales - 170k ( towards the end of the season he could be a first team starter)

Don Cowie - 150k (bought him last year for many championship sides and he did brilliantly so got him in as we have bought him IRL)

Denis Alibec - 230k (on my Inter save this guy is a wonderkid and moved to Man City for £36m)

Joris Delle - Free (needed backup to Loach, Poom picked up a viral infection and is out for 9months and Lee is still injured.)

Seyfo Soley - Free (decent backup for Eustace and O'Toole)

Francisco Merida - Loan (pure quality in the Championship)

Jay Simpson - Loan (needed another striker)

Mark Randall - Loan ( good CM for the Championship)

Outs:

Lee Williamson - 500k

Al Bangura - 500k

Jay Demerit - 1.3m

Ross Jenkins - 130k

Dale Bennett - 30k

Jordan Parkes - 50k

Jonathan North - 26k

Lewis Young - 85k

Cedric Avinel - 45k

Theo Robinson - 75k

Tbh all but Demerit would have no future if promoted first season so I sold them to bring in other players and reduce the wage budget.

Also as Demerit's contract is running out I didn't want to risk losing him on a Free at the end of the season so sold him for as much as anyone would bid.

so far results have been a bit random..

In the Carling Cup:

Watford 5-1 Exeter (O'Toole, Priskin 2, Simpson, DeMerit)

Maccelsfield 1-3 Watford (Smith 2, Rasiak)

So into the third round and a home tie against Wolves.

In the league sitting 9th after 5 games been quite unlucky though.

Watford 1-1 Swansea (Mariappa)

Wolves 2-1 (Smith)

Watford 5-1 Charlton (O'Toole, Simpson, Rasiak, Eustace, DeMerit)

Sheff Utd 4-3 Watford (Priskin 2, Hoskins)

Watford 3-1 Sheff Wed (Cowie 2, Priskin)

So i've been scoring plenty just conceded a few though, but I put that down to Loach not being too great atm, also with DeMerit unhappy I don't think it helped. but i'm expecting it to continue throughout the season as it did with QPR with my tactic but i got promoted by a mile with them so i'm hoping for it again! will update soon.

got promoted to the prem with watford on 9.0.3 patch. now the really hard work starts. got about 5mil to spend (plus anything else I can get by selling some of my squad) managed to get Ben Foster on a free as he left Man U. anyone recommend a good centre back, and midfielder? I have also signed Makukala who has been awsome on previous patches for clubs like Watford.

the other thing that is annoying is that the board expectation is totally unrealistic.

anyone else had any joy in the prem?

Link to post

Currently in 4th season (April) and 5th in the prem with the 'orns.

Promoted through playoff's 1st season, 14th in prem next season and 8th last season.

Won league cup last season therefore in UEFA cup this year, about to play Roma away in 2nd leg of quarter final (after beating them 4-1 at home!)

This seasons budget was £48m (plus £25m from the sale of Raphael Carioca to Barca - Carioca is THE finding of FM09 by the way).

I HIGHLY recommend buying the following players - Raphael Carioca, Robert Lewandowski, Frederico Laurito, Christopher Samba(!), Jan Polak and Guilherme (the LB one)

The best kids i've found are - Salvador Yanguas, Inaki, Andres, Vaclav Kadlec and Wayne Williamson. Get your youth facilities to as good as they can get and every season you will get 2 or 3 gems come through. Also scout the Spanish U19's league all season.

Looking forward to next season as the crop of youngsters bought in the 1st and 2nd season (16-18 year olds) are going to break into the first team. I've got 5 lads with 7 star potential, including 'the next Steven Gerrard'.

Come on u 'orns!

Hey, after a season with Leicester i decided i would try my luck with Watford

in the first season they came 19th with transfers as such:

IN:

Gary Mason 120k

Ben Chorley 35k

Rhys Delvin 22k

Marc Twaddle 6k

OUT:

Lee Williamson 600k

So i came into Watford with a lot of players, and 3m debt. Preseason i have decided to get rid of all the older players and bring in a younger cheaper squad, with the following,

IN:

Thomas Fontaine Free

Dean Leacock Free

Franck Julienne Free

Dan Harding Free

Damien Johnson Free

Lee Martin Loan

Jonjo Shelvy 180k

Jan Supusepa (regen) 15 finishing 15 composure 60k ( not old enough to be playing every week)

Dag Alexander Olsen 1.1m

OUT:

Nathan Ellington Free ( agreed before i became manager )

Jay DeMerit 275k

Jon Harley 1.3m

Leigh Bromby 1.2m

Mart Poom Free

Will Hoskins 85k

Tommy Smith 1.5m

Gary Mason Free

Cedric Avinel Free

Lee Richard FRee

Steven Kabba Free

Jobi McAnuff 950k

Gareth Williams Free

Tamas Priskin 2.5m ( unsettled)

Lloyd Doyley 100k

Marc Twaddle 50k

Mathew Sadler 275k

Ok so i have 1.1m left to spend, i'm in need of a striker to complement my 4-5-1 formation, generally being quick so my midfield can pin point passes to him, so his off the ball and pace must be good. Also any other players you think i should get?

Thanks

Matt

hows everyone finding managing watford in fm 10

---------------------------------------------------------------

Just finished my first season with the golden boys, had a good start but after 3 games I couldn't find any form to save my life! I began getting better around christmas and made a spectacularly late playoff push, even going into 2nd from 22nd at one point, but finished the season 7th! Just outside the playoffs :(

I was optimistic for the 10/11 season, until I found out that I was to receive NO money whatsoever! I was doing well though, I'd made a few signings but then this blasted Lee Hodson palarva came up. Basically I loaned him out to Tranmere and and the end of the season, he didn't return. He didn't return to me six weeks into the summer and he has still gone AWOL. Furious to be honest, because he's a great little prospect and a fantastic backup. How are you doing with them?

Link to post

Came 12th in my first season was near the relegation zone most of the season but a late serge in form pushed me up the table, 3 games into my next season and ive won 2 lost 1. i manage to raise funds by selling demerit for 1.4mil i signed corry evans from man.u as backup also manage to get davenport in on low wages. Its a shame about lee hodson cause he is now my starting right back. i hear what you say about the consistancsey in form every FM game i have have trouble with watfords form.

Link to post

I sorted out this Lee Hodson business, I had to release him on a free then sign him back again. That seems to have sorted the problem out! There was obviously always a danger that someone else could offer him a contract but I had to risk it. You should download tug's training 2010 and put Hodson on it to maximise his potential! I wonder just how good he can get on the game...
