Youth Intake

Despite using some of the money from the City game to upgrade youth facilities, another intake with no standouts. Appleton, however, may get some games this year just for the sake of trying a new option in defence.

The bipolarity of my team continues, with the front men proving far more effective than those responsible for defence. Even in the won matches, my defenders allow many more shots than is workable at any level.

With 3 games to go, things don't look good. I have looked at the run-ins for the four teams who still have it all to do.

2016-17 Season Review

Chelmsford_City.png

League - A long, hard struggle against relegation, thanks to a defence that just couldn't keep it out of the net despite our strong attack force

FA Cup - Through to the 3rd round again, but no big money tie this time. A nice win against League One Brighton was perhaps the highlight of our season

FA Trophy - Two easy draws followed by a tough game against Torquay, who ended our chances of silverware.

FM15JMAugSepOct2017_zps310c465f.png

An excellent first three months in charge, especially once the 15.2 patch came out and sorted out the defensive issues - all games before the Dag & Red match were played on 15.1.3.

The friendly against City was just to keep the boys fit during a strange one week gap from the League program. Screenshot format difference is because ALT-F9 no longer works on the League Two stages page.

Occasional poor results and slipups to my promotion rivals stop me from being as happy as I could be with the latest 3 months. However we have enough of a cushion over 4th that I am hopeful for League One football in Oxford next year.

An injury to our regular Goalkeeper probably cost us the points that would have secured promotion. Now, with 3 games to go, the race is still very much open.

The run-ins for the top 5 clubs are as follows:

York (1st, 85pts)

21/4/18 - Carlisle (22nd) - Home
28/4/18 - Cambridge (6th) - Away
5/5/18 - Burton (18th) - Home

Oxford (2nd, 81pts)

21/4/18 - Cheltenham (21st) - Away
28/4/18 - Notts Co (20th) - Home

2018-19 Season Review

BadgeOxford_United.png

League - A season of hard work paid off as we went up in second place. The margin over the others flatters us a little as we had periods where we struggled.

FA Cup - A typical cup campaign, easily beating a non-league team before failing against League One Barnsley.

League Cup - After a somewhat lucky win against League Two rivals, we did well against a strong Forest side, losing only when we ran out of gas.

Football League Trophy - I am not a fan of this competition anyway, so dropping out early on was no big loss.

Key Players

Nathan Oduwa - One of my first signings, Oduwa, who later on earned the '2nd best signing of the season' tag for League Two, was vital early on, fading a little towards the end.

Jake Wright - Captain Wright was easily my strongest defender, rarely letting me down.

Ashley Fletcher - As Oduwa faded, Fletcher more than made up for it, ending up 3rd on the top scorer's list in the league.

Changing the role of one of my attackers, along with the arrival of new signing Loveridge, produced a month of many goals. The 5-3 beating from Walsall was particularly interesting as we went in down 4-0 at half-time. I am pleased at how easily we beat Orient - they are our opponents in the Football League Trophy.

FM15JMOct2018_zps2872c60c.png

Our excellent form continues into October, as the Oduwa-Loveridge combination beds in perfectly. With the excellent support from the midfield as well as a more solid defence, I'm actually a little optimistic about my chances for the first time this save.

The FA Cup draw gave me League 2 Exeter at the Kassam, whilst we'll play Wycombe, again at home, in the Football League Trophy.

James Loveridge's excellent form continues as we extend our unbeaten run. Our next cup games are Gateshead away in the FA Cup, and Plymouth at home in the Football League Trophy.

Looking good mate as you approach the halfway point. A good cup draw too. A cup run or a huge team in the third round, should you get past Gateshead?

After a 3-0 win, I'll be going over the Tyne in the 3rd round to play Newcastle. Hopefully I'll get some good money from that. :D

3 wins in my first 3 games keep the pressure up on the other top sides. The previous game to me taking over was a loss in the FA Cup to tycoon-owned Q.P.R., so we have no distractions from what I hope can be a successful league campaign.

It may look good on paper, but the performances in many of these games was poor. Millwall, for example, are bottom, and we certainly shouldn't have been losing to Wednesday or struggling to beat a Yeovil side in 23rd.

Already played the first few days of March - I missed an intake screenshot, but all I shall say is that I was disappointed with a group of players that are lower league quality at best.

FM15JMMar2019_zps43cb9bc0.png

A good month with poor results at the start (one of the most boring 0-0s I've had so far this save), and end of the month - we just seemed to bottle it against Huddersfield. The win against Boro was particularly sweet as the team came together perfectly, the winning goal a cross from one of my two new signing wingers.

Which one is the manager in that photo?

Definitely the baby. His daddy is terrible at the game. ;)

April (& May) 2019

200px-Reading_FC.svg.png

FM15JMApr2019_zps93ec71da.png

We end the season on a slightly sour note - two losses in games where we should have won easily, especially given we whacked promotion rivals Palace 5-1. Those dropped points ultimately cost us the title, as an offside goal from Birmingham stole two key points from us minutes from the end.

The time to build the squad for EPL survival has come.

2018-19 Season Review

200px-Reading_FC.svg.png

League - already being 3rd when I took over made it fairly simple to secure promotion, but disappointed not to win my first trophy

FA Cup/League Cup: Out of both before takeover

Key Players

Ben Marshall - one of my first signings due to a lack of decent wingers, Marshall slotted straight in on the right and gave us a creative edge.

Adam Federici - many key saves that got us an extra point or two.

Jem Karacan - another key chance creator.
