cheers, and how have you got regens that good so early and the budgets, both wages and transfer kitty so high I haven't got those wages till my 3rd season in serie A. have you used editer at all for the regens????

Not at all - and don't worry, most of the rest of the players I've had come through are awful - I've only kept 1 player from the last 2 intakes.

I do have a very good Head of Youth Development and excellent Junior Coaching, otherwise I think I just had a lucky streak with them.

Having said that, you should see my defence :D they are woeful. Lucky to keep 5 clean sheets a season despite my excellent keeper.

You have enough for at least a few of the players kits!

I was able to pick up one or two decent regens early on but none as good as Aaron's. It is a bit of luck as well as how well you tweak the training, coaches and using the players in matches. Below are my best youth players since starting this save though (Only included those who featured a decent amount of the time as some were discarded or layed next to no games at the club their entire career like Christian Bernardi):

Aldo Angelini History

Alex Benvenuti History

Alessandro Barra History

Luigi Bertolini History

Franco Macagno History

Nicola Mularoni History

There are a few others like Dolci Tiziano, Nicolo Zanotti, Christian Bernardi, Andrea Giancobbi, etc. Any of the more recent ones can be seen in the World Cup update if they are Sammarinese, but a lot of them just never made it to the full squad as they were not Serie A quality and then either got shipped out or otherwise which is a bit sad. Starting to incorporate more of my youth and have stopped buying players as much as possible. I think 2 last season and only one is used, the other on loan, and picked up a midfielder on free as a Bovu eventual replacement.

Edit: How could I forget Paolo Bindi. This is a screenshot from his debut season.

My players might be good - but wow I wish I had Bindi. My full back options are so poor I've given up playing full backs...

Comparatively, this is Gasperoni the day he came through (my newgens are always 14, I think that's a side effect of having the Sammarinese League activated)

As a renowned Football Manager Handheld cheater in the office, I can confirm that this is a likely scenario. ;)

hmmmm LLM is the best way to play in my opinion. tinkering just takes the worth out of any achievement!!!!!

I wouldn't listen to Duncan too much...

Believe me, if I was to 'cheat' or 'tinker', I wouldn't be hovering in Serie B after 9 seasons!

Do you think your team is ready for a season without relegation struggle?

Just had a very good season... Will have an update out in a couple of hours I hope. Just got to get the screenshots for the best XI and write it all up :)

Little taster though... We got 83 points from our 38 games... Where in the table would this place us?

Club 2034-35

Season Review

We didn't start the season out in the best of fashion as we lost our opening game to Modena 1-0 before narrowly making the group stages of Champions League beating Bilbao 2-1 on aggregate. We then beat Palermo 5-2 which sparked a record run of 35 games without loss. A run that lasted until the Champions League first knockout round where Lille beat us 2-1 at home. Our Serie A run lasted a little longer, 30 games, until a last placed Sampdoria beat us 2-0. In between time we managed to show that we had a fantastic knack for winning or coming back, while beating the likes of Juventus 4-1 and Roma 4-0 to show that we were a formidable force against high class opposition. The run included numeros draws such as a 3 game run with 2-2 at Fiorentina and 0-0 draws with Udinese and Milan. In fact, we had 11 draws during our unbeaten spell, but not before a streak of 5 and 6 wins respectivley pushed up up towards the top of the table.

Despite our excellent form, we still did not occupy first place in the Serie A, behind Juventus and a resurgent Parma team. We were still alive in the Champions League as we overcame our first leg loss to Lille to progress with a thumping 6-0 second leg win, as well as usurping the likes of Roma to make it into the Italian Cup Semi's to verse a Serie B placed Varese. Varse turned out to be one of our biggest challenges all season as we drew both legs, only winning on away goal aggregate with a 1-1 draw away from home. It took until the 30th or so round with a 4-2 win over Juventus, directly followed by a 3-0 win over Parma to push us into first over our two closest opponents and after a few games of back and forth between us, we managed some kicking distance as we won 6 league games in a row. We also managed to beat benfica with a 4-0 second leg win to continue our smashing run in the Chanpions League going. But all good things must come to an end as our second Portugese battle in as many rounds, Porto proved a more difficult hurdle. They beat us in the first leg, 2-1 and managed to hold on to a 2-2 draw to progress to the final as we crashed out in the Semi final stage. A good acheivement that we can hopefully improve on next year as the competition continues to elude us. Our league form dipped with a draw to Bologna and a loss to Cagliari but by that time we already had the title wrapped up, ending the season on 83 points, 10 clear of Juventus in second.

We also folowed up the great season with a 1-0 win over Napoli in the Italian Cup final to give us our second domestic trophy double.

Surprisingly, despite such a great season, where we topped scored in the league with 81 goals, our top goalscoarers for the season were a defender and a midfielder! Tino Schneider showed signs of "legendness" as he knocked in a massive 17 goals, 14 of which were in the league, while Macagno seemlingly bettered that feat, getting 17 also from defense. 9 of these in the league, 8 in other competitions. The only other player to reach double figures in the league was Nieuwenhuis with 10. A few players managed double figures for the entire season though as Nieuwenhuis managed 16 behinf Schneider and Macagno's 17, while Grille and Hemmings got 14 a piece. Assist wise, Bovu went on a tear as he racked up 18 with Hemmings (11) and Grille (10) a fair way behind. Bishop, on loan, did well to get 8 in his debut season.

If the goals category was a sight for sore eyes, the Player of the mach category was even more outrageous. Macagno is well known for getting these awards for fun, but this season was just ridiculous as he picked up a massive 19 awards. Bovu managed just 5 as the next closest, a huge 14 games between them. His average rating was 8.10 which rightfully puts him up there as one of the geats to play defense at such a young age, and he could truely stake a claim if he can maintain it for his career. He also picked up the European Best Player Award, and the Champions League Player of the Tournament which puts him in good position to improve his 3rd placed World Player of the Year acheivement this year.

Another positive by way of the youth system is that our side, for the first time, won their respective Under 20's competition.

Overall Best XI

Franco Macagno enters the all time XI on the bench and is only a season or 2 away from eclipsing the likes of Surano or Bertolini for a starting berth.

San Marino Legends - The Hall of Fame

Every Season, I will nominate 1-3 players to be inducted in to the Hall of Fame. You may only be inducted in to the Hall of Fame once a player has retired or they have passed their peak. In very few circumstances will active/current national team players be added. There is no minimum requirement as it is based on ability, performance, relevance and significance of appearances, not the appearance number or goals scored. Each inductee will be given a brief description of their role and purpose of induction.

Statistics provided in Alphabetical order whilst brief is in induction order.

Class of 2025-26

1. Frederico Laurito (Player 2012-2025, Staff 2025-Present) Stats Career Staff

The most prolific scorer the club has seen and a one time leader in all time appearances. Vice captain for many years, he was loyal and with the club through its growth from Serie C1/A though to Serie A, picking up awards such as Top Goal scorer along the way. Is now a part of the backroom staff and looking to continue on with the club for many more years to come.

2. Francesco Di Tacchio (Player 2013-2026, Staff 2026-Present) Stats Career Staff

Captain from Serie C1/A to Serie A, the all time leading caps for the club, Di Tacchio was a loyal member of the team and family. Well respected and picking up awards throughout his career, there are none more greater than the 4 Fans Player of the Year awards he has received by the fans of the club. One of the All time greats continues on as a backroom staff member.

Class of 2026-27

3. Davide Poletti (Player 2009-2014, Staff 2014-Present) Stats Career Staff

Though he was only working with me for a short time as a player, he was our inaugural captain under my management and was our best player, making the Serie C1/A team of the year, Winning Serie C1/A Player of the Year and taking the Fans Player of the Year award. He then went on to become the u20's manager, keeping him at the club and has been involved in raising such players as Bertolini who is a future Hall of Fame candidate himself. His contribution to the team has been both on and off the field and as such, will be inducted as both a player and staff member in to the Hall of Fame.

Class of 2027-28

4. Alessio Luciani (Player 2013-2019, Player/Coach 2022-2028, Staff 2028-Present) Stats Career Staff

Spent two long spells a the club, becoming one of the most capped and well respected payers the club has seen. With us from the Serie C1/A all the way through to the Serie A, he was able to command a place in the first team up until his last few years, when he became a bench and backup player. Was able to carry on until he was 37, sharing his playing career with a Reserve's Manager role for 6 seasons, now continuing this role at San Marino into his retirement. Able to play all across the backline, he became the bench mark of the ultimate defender at the club and was often revered as one of the clubs best ever, most solid defenders.

5. Dejan Danza (Player 2014-2026) Career

One of our most prolific midfielders, Danza was amazing through the early stage of San Marino, up until the Serie A. He was always able to find the right pass and ended his career with 41 assists for San Marino. Better still, he was also very good from the edge of the area and managed 38 goals for the club, some of which proved vital throughout his career. One of the best all round players to pull on a San Marino Jersey and rightly added to the Hall of Fame.

Class of 2028-29

6. Marco Villanova (Player 2010-2019) Career

Villanova was one of the first fan favourites at San Marino, spending a couple of years at the club before and after I took charge. Was absolutely amazing in his opening 2 seasons as he dominated the charts for both assists and goals and controlled the Serie C1/A side along with Di Tacchio as one of the key contributors. As San Marino improved to the Serie B, Villanova lost his footing in the side and as our shape changed from one utilising wingers to one more focused down the middle, his role went from limited to none and he was loaned out for his last 2 years of his contract. Upon its expiring, he decided not to renew his contract and instead left to retire from the game at just 27 years of age. Despite his swift fall from grace, in 4 to 5 years of the 9 he spent at San Marino, he was truly one of the sides most gifted and best players

7. Matteo Paro (Player 2012-2018) Career Staff

With us for only 6 years, Paro was the heart and sole of the team and really shone when utilised in his favoured Defensive Midfield role. In fact, Paro's ability to supply and control the tempo of the match from this position is what led us to change the structure of the team and head in the direction of an anchor in midfield. To say the team was structured around him is an understatement as he was the leader before Di Tacchio took over, and is one of the main reasons the club rose from Serie C1/A to the Serie B so quickly. He retired and continues in the sport today as a Director of Football for Juve Stabia. He may one day come back to the club in the back room, but until then, will go down as a legend and pioneer of the San Marino midfield and the style of play we utilise today.

8. Carlo Pelagatti (Player 2010-2019) Career

Was at the club before I arrived and was one of the first players to lead from the back line. He helped create a solid defence in the early seasons and was one of our most solid defenders in our push for Serie B football. He struggled with the step up though and become a reserve in his final seasons, making only one Serie B appearance, but remained loyal to the club and fulfilled his contract obligations with no complaints. He decided to retire at just 30 once his contract was not renewed as he was now struggling to keep up with players around him, but his role in the Serie C1/A side will not be forgotten.

Class of 2029-30

9. Gabriele Pacciardi (Player 2012-2017) Career

Had a stay of 5 years, but in that time proved to be a great distributor of the ball and a very consistent performer. 3 of those seasons where successful first team positions as a key player, whilst one was as a provider and rotational distributor. Gained no great accolades but managed 14 assists in his 4 seasons as one of our defensive holding players, including one season alongside Paro as our defence helped us with Promotion. A key ingredient and one of the star players during our mediocre seasons, his only fault was being part of the side in the twilight years of his career. Had he been hear during his younger years and peak, he could of become an icon, if not a legend. Retired from all facets of the game at 33 but still supports us through the media from time to time.

10. Vittorio Ferrero (Player 2011-2015) Career Staff

A fantastic defensive unit in our backline who did a lot in his short stint at the club. Though his tenure was only 4 seasons, 3 under me, he was inspirational and even took home the the Fans Player of the Year Award. Our goals and ambitions differed and he left for Pro Patria before successful stints at Andria and Catanzaro. Though his career remained at Serie C football, he was one of our key players, especially over his last 2 seasons and his love from the fans for such solid performances was undeniable. He has gone on to be a manager, currently at Venezia.

Class of 2030-31

11. Erik Cabalceta (Player 2016-2027, Staff 2027-Present) Career Staff

Was at one time our first choice defender, proving a capable and solid Serie B and A player. In his stay at the club, he had 11 years total at Titani wih 7 great seasons, however towards the latter pat of his career, as the side started to push for higher positions as well, he became out of favour and players deemed stronger in the central defence where brought in to tighten the back line. His worthiness was evident in his 259 appearances, as well as his Fans Player of the Year Award, which he got in 2018-19 and is only the second defender to do so. Would not be out of place at his peak in the team of today and enters the hall of fame only just being ousted from the starting overall XI as of last season by a future hall of famer in Surano.

Class of 2031-32

12. Edoardo Pozzi (Player 2017-2030) Stats Career

A very stable player who managed to always do enough to hang around. Was always a threat and a compatible player in the midfield, able to slip back into the defensive midfield role if required. Was a starter for much of his time with us, but became a capable bench player and proved to be handy as an impact player as his career moved on. May be forgotten by many for his head down and behind the scenes attitude, but definitely one of the cogs that ticked in San Marino's rise to the top. A place in the Hall of Fame is that his efforts will not be forgotten.

13. Marco Bianchi (Player 2018-2027, Staff 2027-Present) Stats Career Staff

Was signed when he was entering his peak and showed his skill with his ability to defend all across the back line, but also to get a lot of assists from defence. This was a trend we exploited, and as a result of his great abilities, it is a tactic we still use to this day, 5 years after his retirement. He amassed 36 assists in less than 300 games from the backline and at the time of his retirement, was our most prolific defender in creating opportunities. Was heavily missed but has since stayed on and helps the younger players from time to time as a scout and with the tactics that made him a San Marino Hall of Famer.

Class of 2032-33

14. Luigi Bertolini (Player 2012-2031, Staff 2031-Present) Stats Career Staff

An absolute legend for both club and country, he will definitely go down as one of the best to play for the side ever. He was always solid and a key component for 20 years, even playing 14 Serie A games in his final season for an average rating of 7.23. He was head and shoulders above the rest of Sammarinese products, not just from his generation, but from all players as he is the only player to be a consistent starter in a top league, which was ranked 2nd behind the Premier League during his time.

A youth Product who played with the team from Serie C1/A all the way through to winning the league in the Serie A in his final season, was fiercely loyal and will forever be remembered as the heart and sole of his club and country. He was lucky enough to be named captain sporadically throughout his career, including a few games of, as well as the final game of their first and only Serie A title to day. More than just an Icon, he is a legend and plans are afoot to erect a statue at the stadium, to be unveiled at the opening of the newly to be created grandstand next season.

Class of 2033-34

15. Alessandro Grilli (Player 2016-2030) Stats Career

He was our first choice keeper for a decade and as of 2034, is still our best ever keeper to date. Was an amazing contributor to the team and saved us many a time in our push from Serie B towards a Serie A title challenger. was loaned out as the team got bigger, but remained loyal and was at the club until his retirement, after starting out a young, budding keeper in our first Serie B campaign. Will take a lot of pushing to move from between the sticks, but if that day does ever come, he will always hold a place in the hearts of the San Marino faithful as one of the best shot stopper to wear the Azzuri e Blanco.

Class of 2034-35

16. Luca Petrucci (Player 2016-2031, Coach 2031-Present) Stats Career Staff

One of the all time geats, Petrucci was from the era where San Marino started to make a name for themselves thanks to the likes of players like himself, Di Tacchio and Laurito who all spent at least the 6 years in Serie B through to San Marino competing in Europe and for the title. The Australian was plucked from obscurity at AIS and went on to reach 474 total appearances, at one point leading the clubs all time charts both overall and in league matches played. A great all round player who could also play on the right, Petrucci dominated midfield managing 69 goals and 61 assists for the club, as well as 76 caps and for goals for Australia. His final year marked San Marino's first Serie A title, and though he only made 2 appearances, he was allowed to celebrate the win with the team. He also played a key role in the clubs UEFA Cup win in 2030 as well as their back to back Italian cup wins beween 2029 to 2030.

17. Lodovichetti (Physio 2011-2035)

For 24 years Lodovichetti helped repair the players' as they hobbled in from training, matches or even the odd holiday related injury. Loyalty to the man who remained at the club my entire tenure until he could do it no more. the 63 year old will be sorely missed and goes down as the first all solely backroom club man

Hi guys,

I'm considering giving this a go as I haven't really got into a long-term save on FM13 yet. I wanted to ask about foreign players - have any of you had luck getting players to take San Marinese nationality? If so, where did they come from originally?

It is not possible to gain Sammarinese nationality in the game unfortunately.

Sometimes I do not understand the AI:

Can you explain to me how this season was unsuccessful?

3 goals, 8 assists and 2 PoM over 42 appearances for a 7.17 average rating, helping the side win both the Serie A title for the first time in 4 years and the Italian Cup?

Sadly it's next to impossible in real life, so it can't be done in game.

I believe it's just a text error, the game doesn't actually recognise it as an unsuccessful loan.

whether the game found it unsuccessful or not, I brought him in again :)

Loan spell number 2 on the road to what I hope will be a permanent signing when his price drops to something I am willing to pay.

So Bindi was just given his first full Italian cap at 18 years of age, but I still have the option to select him for San Marino... Will this option go away once he reaches 23, or will it always remain but I can never select him? I picked some other Italian/Sammarinese players this way (i.e. Davide Bollini) but they only played at under 18 and under 21 level for Italy.

Thanks Johnny. Due to work picking up though, I have had to cut out a few of the reports, but if there are any parts that people like in particular or don't like, I can tweak it to include or not include these features.

Did he play in a friendly? Dual-national players are only bound to a country once they've played a competitive international.

So thought I would point out some key factors in our push for International glory.

World Cup

We have a decent chance to make another run of it: France should top the group while second will be between Ukraine, Austria and ourselves. I can see us finishing second if we can get a result over Ukraine as they will be our biggest opponents.

decentworldcupdraw.jpg

Even more exciting now...

European Championships

Guess who just made their second major tournament in a row? we only got there thanks to our 4-2 win over Norway, which may not have happened, if not for the early sending off of Wickman. It gave us the opportunity to score first, but not before Norway got back in the game to make it 1-1 early in the second half. Our numbers finally took their toll on Norway as Angelini hit a double in a 10 minute period before substitute Daniele Ugolini scored the sealer. We eased off and Norway got a consolation goal to make it 4-2, but Europe beckons!

Firstly, I'm using FM12 as I figured FM13 wasn't worth upgrading to.

I try to keep the game as challenging and realistic as possible, as I love the challenge of figuring out my own tactics, training etc and only buy players that I know purely from real life or that my scouts find themselves.

I've decided to only manage the club and start as a Sammarinese Brian Clough with a Sunday League reputation.

I have already played the first season and just about gained promotion after finishing 2nd in the league, thanks to fairly consistent form and a 12 game unbeaten run after a shaky start and end to the season.

Club records:

http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/2619/clubrecords.jpg

First season I literally just went for broke and bought a whole new squad of free transfers purely from scout recommendations. I believe 9 of my starting 11 were new signings. My best buy was former Italy international Cristiano Doni. He was marked as suspended for the first few games. I then wondered why he was still suspended after a few games and hovered my mouse over the suspended icon, turned out he had a 3 year WORLD BAN! Not such a great signing then, I blame my scout for recommended him to me! :)

I owe all my attacking success last season to my front three, who helped the club get the record amount of goals for a Serie C2/A team with 76 goals.

Lone striker Rossini was the top scorer in the whole league with 20. 37 year old Davide Bombardini scored a surprisingly high 17 league goals from the right wing and left winger Marco Ingrao grabbed himself 19 league assists from 32 games. A regular goal combination seemed to be Ingrao crossing wide from the left to Bombardini arriving unmarked at the back post.

I'm really excited about some of my young players, my scout found an unattached 16 year old Italian defender who had no past club on his profile, so I took him on a trial and then snapped him up asap! I didn't even know you could find youth players who didn't start at a club?

Here he is:

http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/8772/cozzolino.jpg

I also got a GOOD SAMMARINESE youth player midway through last season's youth intake with a great name:

Another decent Sammarinese player my scouts found was:

Welcome David and good first season. You have a bit more of a challenge starting in C2 in FM12 so good luck though it looks like you caught up pretty quick.

A 3 and a half year ban is a hefty stint, especially being on the wrong side of 35. Hope you didn't have to pay too much for him (both to sign and release). Good luck next season!

International 2035

Latvia continue to be a bogey side for us as we fail to win once again, but we had a decent year as we won 4 in a row including a 4-0 win over Albania to signal us as a regular force. Losses to Germany and Moldova put our Euro campaign under pressure and a draw in the second match against Albania meant that we needed a win over Norway to progress. We got it with a 4-2 win to secure our second Major Tournament participation and our first in the European Championships.

2035 Best XI

Fixtures

Players with Potential - 23 and Under

Alex Benvenuti - 22

Featuring regularly at club level now, he is on the verge of full Italian honours but I am still clinging on to any possible chance we have.

Paolo Bindi -18

18 and Italy's first choice right back. We lost a superstar.

Marco Bollini - 20

Great run in to the Euro's. Is already our star player but would get so much more support up front if Benvenuti can be swayed.

Matteo Giannini - 19

Not as prominent as last year, but still used in rotation with the likes of Della Valle

Roberto Mularoni - 22

Use sparingly as he has trouble playing consistently.

San Marino Hall of Fame

Every Season, I will nominate 1-3 players to be inducted in to the Hall of Fame. You may only be inducted in to the Hall of Fame once a player has retired or they have passed their peak. In very few circumstances will active/current national team players be added. There is no minimum requirement as it is based on ability, performance, relevance and significance of appearances, not the appearance number or goals scored. Each inductee will be given a brief description of their role and purpose of induction.

Statistics provided in Alphabetical order whilst brief is in induction order. Being the first year, there has been 6 inducted players.

Class of 2026

1. Luigi Bertolini (2014-2031) - Current All time cap holder, Bertolini has been the best Sammarinese product in the country's history. Has been inducted during his playing career and is the first inducted players. He has been the most consistent player for the national side and since his debut at the age of 16, he has been a guaranteed stater while fit. There has been none better in the history of Sammarinese football, and is known as a living legend. The only Sammarinese player to be a key component to a professional outfit in the Serie A and to have one silverware including Europa League, Italian Cup and the Serie A. Has since tutored and been involved in the development of Sammarinese players at the club side to boost the national team. The most gifted and greatest Sammarinese player ever and will be tough to beat considering the period of which he played, during their toughest years.

2. Andy Selva (1998-2015) - Was the All time top scorer with 10 goals at one point in time. Was a rock and played for the national team until he was 40. Played in a time before some of the better players arrived and did most of his national service as a one man team. Captain of the side for 2 seasons.

3. Cristian Bernardi (2014-2030) - The second highest capped player and the best keeper in the history of the country. Has had no close competition and has been as solid as possible in a side that struggles to be competitive early in its history. Tutored and mentored Angelini who has taken over between the sticks, and even managed an assist from goals in his time with the National team. Will be missed and has reached Legendary status for his achievements.

4. Mattia Stefanelli (2010-2019) - The heir apparent to Selva. Lived up to the bill as best as possible but struggled with only 3 goals. Was the only striker choice for many seasons when Selva retired and captained the side briefly.

5. Aldo Junior Simoncini (2004-2018) - The first goal keeper and vice captain. Played for 6 years before retiring with 54 caps. His stats are not known, however he was a valuable member of a side struggling to find players to field. Was one of 3 original players to be automatic selections, along side Selva and Stefanelli.

6. Matteo Vitaioli (2013-2021) - Retired with 56 caps and 4 goals, he was a solid midfield player in an era that saw very little come through in they way of midfield talent. Though not the best of players, he was admirable in our engine room.

Class of 2027

7. Michele Cervellini (2006-2020) - His stats may not look all that great but he was the unsung hero for a number of years as he played a role in the middle for over a decade. Was a solid player who was always on the starting sheet until he reached his mid 30's and faded at the start of when the new crop of youngster where coming in.

8. Tiziano Colantonio (2013-2022) - Only had 39 caps for the national team but has a number of achievements that came with his short stint. He was the youngest ever player, breaking in to the starting line up of the national team at just 15 years and 290 days. He is also the record holder for the most assists in a match, standing at 3. His downfall in the national team came when the formation shifted from a 4-4-1-1 to a 4-1-3-2 and wide players were removed from the starting line up. He was still given opportunities off the bench and did reasonably well, but his spell will be remembered more as the youngster with much potential who had a good first 5 year with the national team, rather than the squad player off the bench that he obtained for the remainder.

Class of 2028

9. Damiano Vannucci (1992-2013) - Only had one year in the national team under my guidance but has stood the test of time to be one of the highest capped players. Was looked up to by the younger generation and though he played in a difficult era, was still able to make the midfield role his own

10. Alessandro Ceccoli (2014-2026) - His debut year in football came when I entered management and for 13 out his 18 seasons he was a mainstay in the national team backline. He played through the tough years until we started to see some real progress in the national side and will be sorely missed as he was always a key player and valuable member. He managed 4 assists from the left hand side of defence in a team that has always struggled to score, showing he was a main component to anything creative on the left of the field.

Class of 2029

11. Fabio Francini (2016-2028)

Was a handy little midfielder who became a great servant for the national side. His role was primarily to support attacks, and showed good composure in a tough side to manage 3 assists and a decent rating of 6.41. Became a fan favourite and one of our key players during his peak for the national side and will take some beating as one of the better midfielders the country has had.

Class of 2030

12. Mattia Berardi (2015-2028)

Probably the most versatile defender we have had for the national side with the ability to play anywhere in the back line. Not only did he have decent ability technically, he was also one of our fastest defenders for his error, which made him very reliable at the back. In a time where Bertolini and Pellicconi have dominated the central defence, Berardi was on either side with Ceccoli or Riccio, helping to make the most formidable backline the National side has ever seen and the main reason for our sturdier defence and rise up the rankings towards breaking the top 100.

Class of 2031

13. Francesco Riccio (2015-2024)

Defenders have been the strongest component of the national team for a long time, and its no thanks to Riccio on the right helping out with this. A strong player, he was always solid and well deserving of a place in the national team. Currently the right back in the overall XI which shows his contribution was huge and he was one of the reasons that helped make San Marino competitive in the earlier stages of the national side.

Class of 2032

14. Mattia Righi (2019-2031)

Currently the all time top scorer with 12 goals for his country, he could of gone on to become much greater if not for serious injuries hampering him during his younger years. Was also over shadowed towards the latter part of his career with some more talented youngsters, but regardless, still went on to etch his name in history as the first Sammarinese player to hit a hattrick in a match as well as to become the top scorer. He totalled 54 caps by the time he retired at

Class of 2033

15. Alessandro Valentini (2015-2028)

A great player who sparked the attacking flair of the team of the best art of a decade. Was a mentor and teacher to the youth players as they came through such as Zanotti and Mularoni and would of been happy to be part of the squad on their push to creating future stars that would compete on the bigger stages of football. Decided to retire at 32 but was part of the national team for the best part of 13 seasons and has helped hand the torch over to the next line of midfield players who are leading the team to new heights.

Class of 2034

16. Devid Vendrame (2016-2026)

The first player to fit in to the Defensive holding role, which has now become the pivotal role of the side, anchoring defence and helping to build attacks. Devid was key to our rise in the earlier years and did a lot with the talent he had. He was never the best technically nor did he have much speed, but he was able to work hard to get the job done. A very gritty player, he managed 2 goals, 2 assists and 2 Player of the Match awards in 49 appearances and led the way for the likes of Nicola Mularoni who have followed in the footsteps of an underrated player of the national team.

I'm midway through my second season, in Serie C1/B and I'm losing around £200,000 per month, £2m in debt, bankrupt, in receivership and only just over the £32,187 weekly wage budget.

I would be in an even poorer state financially, but the board have injected money into the club on a regular basis over the last two seasons. Were you guys in the same situation in the first/second season? I'm afraid I'm going to lose all my promising players for nothing. :(

The club's finances are a mess, but most of the players aren't letting it effect their performances, although a couple have had a word with me.

Slight update, the board has restructured the £2m debt and now my balance is 0, good news as I was getting worried.

We are currently 2nd in the league, one point off top, have the best goal difference and have scored the most goals.

I have decided to move my star wingers of last season Ingrao and Bombardini into the centre of midfield, as they are both not the quickest. Plus my two young wingers, Villanova and 16 year old youth graduate and San Marino sensation Bart Scalise, have played their way into the first team. Bart is a revelation, his first season as a pro and he has 13 goals from 14 starts, all from the right wing.

yes, you will find that the finances don't get any better until you hit Serie A really. Serie B I still struggled financially and had to resort to loanees as my main port of call, however once the Serie A comes it becomes easy as the revenue from Serie A plus the stadium (when upgraded) helps you turn a tidy profit. I'm upwards of £300m without needing to make any major sales to boost our profits.

Just finished the next season, but will be a way over the weekend. but a little summary.

We have seen a changing of the guard up front and a few players will be on their way out. Benvenuti hit a club record 5 goals in a match while Macagno reached a Serie A league record of 8.22 from 31 games.

More importantly, you are probably wondering if we were able to go back to back?

Well, after 34 games the table looked like this:

Juventus.......74

San Marino....72

with the following run-ins:

San Marino..........Juventus

v Cagliari.............v Genoa CFC

v Alto Adige.........v Parma

v Bologna............v Pro Vercelli

v Lazio................v Palermo

Bovu, our captain, has been out injured for a few months with a torn Hamstring and would miss the final 4 rounds. It would go down to to the wire, but tune in next week for the full summary!

For the second successive season, we finished 2nd , scored a lot of goals and had the league's top scorer. Second in Serie C2 meant automatic promotion, but second in C1/B is just top ranking in the play-offs.

First leg of the play-off semi was away to Barletta, who I hadn't lost to in the two previous league games, where I won 3-1 away and drew 1-1 at home. We went 1-0 up in the semi, enjoying quite a comfortable first half and then on 41 mins Puccio decides to slide in on a player who was going nowhere, straight red and I'm down to 10 men.

Barletta equalises early in the second half and Rossini scored on 62 mins to ensure we retake the lead. Then in the final 15 mins of the match my team couldn't holdout with only ten players and conceded two, meaning we lost the match 3-2. Although 2 away goals gave us a slight positive going into the 2nd leg at home.

The 2nd leg began perfectly as the pre-match team talk obviously had a positive effect, the team were 2-0 up after 19 mins. So, now we're 4-3 up on aggregate and have 2 away goals and we're into the play-off final... But ohhh no, not yet, because Barletta pull a back on 30 mins to even up the score, 4-4 on aggregate. Although we still have two away goals to their one. With a few minutes left it looks like we're going into the final now, but no on 87 mins the season is over, Barletta score, take the lead on aggregate 5-4 and there isn't enough time for me to comeback.

This season it seemed luck really wasn't on my side, all my youth intake are instantly forgettable, we had major long-term injuries

scattered throughout the season to our best players. In-fact, in the last game of the league season. I had my two central midfielders playing with injections, the goalie having to start the match on 75% fitness and another two players injured during the game and still out on the pitch. I was also down tomy two third choice centre backs for a large proportion of the season, as the first and second choice were out injured.

It also seemed like I drew and lost many games where I created most the clear-cut chances, took the most shots and dominated possession.

Right at the moment where I needed my best players most they suffered serious injuries. Star player from last season Bombardini, left winger Villanova and right winger Bart Scalise (topscorer in Serie C1/B with 22 goals) were all out for months, missing the last few games of the league season and the play-offs. Scalise and Villanova were 2 of the 3 highest avg rating players in the whole league, my midfielder Ingrao was the other. All three were part of the Serie C1/B Team of the Year.

The few other positives for the season were the fact the team went 34 games scoring in a row and only lost a league low 5 Serie A C1/B league games.

In terms of individual awards, Marco Villanova won the Italian Serie CB/1 Player of the Year award and Ingrao was runner-up.

Gutting I didn't go up to Serie B first time of asking, simply because of the boost in finances it would have provided. The club is continuing to lose around £200,000 per month, I want to reduce the wages to £15-20,000 per week, but that will mean selling or loaning out my best players on the highest wages. Although it seems very difficult to sell my good players, even for 0 or just loan them out, as no teams are biting.

Club 2035-36

Season Review

After winning the Serie A and Italian Cup last season, there was high hopes, despite and aging squad. Borges was 39, Bovu 35 with a few others in the wings such as Nieuwenhuis, Formiga and a host of others ropping up to the mid 30's. This was probably cause to our slow start as we lost to both Roma and Inter 2-1 with a 3-1 win over Ac Milan to break up our opening month. We won our next 3 to get back on track, including a 2-1 win over rivals Juventus, while also adding the opening CL game to the list. We then lost to Chelsea and Catania before beating Napoli and Panathinaikos to give us 3 losses early on in the league as well as 2 wins and a loss in the Champions League. Not our best opening months, made worse in the CL with a loss and a draw to put us under pressure of qualifying, while our league for hit a good run of 4 including a 5-1 win over Varese. I was a bit worried about our form and a few players grumbled as we lost to Palermo 2-1, languishing in mid table just prior to December was not boding well. I decided to change our key starting players and gave Benvenuti and Hamann a go up front and they proved to change the tide of our season. We went on to beat Chelsea 5-0 to progress through the group stages of the Champions League, but had Barca in the next round and could not beat them, losing 2-0 then drawing 0-0 at home. Our league and cup form was fantastic between the group and the knockout games, between December and February as we won 6 and drew 3 in the league, dispatching the likes of Roma 4-0 and Inter 3-0, and managig an epic match against Juventus for a 3-3 draw. Our run came to an end against Torino, but it saw us lift from mid table to 4th, getting us right in the Europe placings and within touchig distance of the title.

During this period however, a few players lost their way and Seguin requested to leave for a new challenge and then offered himself up on the free transfer market, while Hamann complained a bout lack of game time, despite ow being a regular this season at 21. He too made himself available under the bossman ruling as we fought to keep our stars. Nieuwenhuis too, not able to get the gamet ime he wanted, and also wanting a new challenge decided to also take up a bossman offer, before deciding it better to retire from the game completely at the end of the year, at 33. Angelini was on the verge of filing a request as he wanted to be outright first choice, but with the Seguin saga, he got his wish as Seguin was refused from the first team for bringing the team into disrepute. Some good news though, kn Bishop signing a full time contract for next season, while some youth players like Muratori made the step up and got a few games in.

After early struggles in the Inter match for the Italian Cup, we won out 2-0 in extra time and then became first rate in front of goals, as we beat Udinese 5-0 before trumping Milan 5-2. We became complacent in the second leg of the semis however, as Milan came back in to the match with 3 goals, with only our 1 solitary second half goal he difference on aggregate, 6-5. Our second Italian Cup final in 2 years, this time against Roma, gave us confidence in the league as well as we beat Varese 5-1 followed by Pro Vercelli 3-0 to get us up in to second with 6 games to go. We did a number on Fiorentina as we smash and grabbed a 1-0 win before scoring in stoppage time to beat Palermo 3-2 to get us just 2 points behind Juventus. The final run in saw us beat Cagliari 3-1 while Genoa beat Juventus 2-1 to give us the lead with 3 games to go.

Juventus dispatched Parma while we beat off Alto Adige to keep it a point race with 2 games left. Juventus went behing in round 37 to Pro Vercellin, managing a late equaliser to pull level on 78 points as we prepared for our match against Bologna. It was tight and looked like we would go on to draw and have an interesting final match day, but Hamann struck us the winner to make it 1-0 and give us a 3 point buffer over Juventus. On the final day, chaos ensued as Juventus went 1-0 down against a lowly Palermo while we then went 1-0 down ourselves to Lazio. Juventus saw this as a slim chance and pushed everyone up trying to get an equaliser and then the winner to give themselves a hope of winning back the title and they came close on a few occasions as they peppered the goals. But moments later we scored to level against Lazio, and as we scored and the announcement was made at the Juventus match, they players seemingly stopped to take note of who scored, because just seconds later Palermo raced through a very statis Juventus defence to score their second and make it 2-0. Juventus heard we had scored, and as they snapped out of their intent listening trance, noticed they had also conceded another, at which point, they completely sunk and failed to fight for the remaining 15 minutes. Us o the other hand, upon hearing the second Palermo goal, lifted our foot of the gas and held out for a draw, our third title and our first one back to back. We still had the Italian Cup Final to play and were looking to make it a trebele season as we wonthe Italian Super Cup earlier in the year.

The final of the Italian cup was favourable to Roma as they had the home ground advantage, with the match being played in Rome, but this did little to stem our over confidence from winning the League as we struck 2 goals in the opening 15 to make it 2-0, with a third commig before the break to kill the match off before it even started. Roma did well to limit us to 3 as we comletely controlled the game from start to finish, rounding out a fantastic treble season and a double back to back season as we also have the Italian Cup back to back this year too.

It was a real change of scenery this year up front as Benventui and Hamann made up our primary strikers as Grille, Hemmings and Nieuwehuis all struggled to being the year. Benventui ended up top scoring wih 23 while Hamann did equally well with 16. Bovu at 35 years of age did well with 9 while Guevera, his role replacement managed 8 in a good first season. As usual though, Macagno stole the limelight wih 11 goals from defence to continue his impressive career and goal scoring ration from defence. I the playmaking department though, no one was close as Bovu showed he still has all the skills of a fantastic player, notching 18 assists for the season, while Marini and Bevenuti each got 10. Binidi did well from the back with 8 as a host of players cropped i around the 6-7 mark to show that we still have versatility and supply from all over the pitch. The Player of the Match category of stats in the past few seasons has been strangely one sided, but this year proved even more ridiculous in the league as Macagno took 16 of these in the Serie A alone. He manage 2 more in other competitions to get 18 for the year, 15 better than Bevenuti and Hamann who came in second with just 3.

Another great thing about this season was the rise of Connola who played fantastic, as well as Mamone who complete what will most surely become the most iconic backline ever at San Marino, and one of the best to ever be fielded: Mamone (7.31), Connola (7.34), Macagno (8.18) and Bindi (7.38). Just take a look at their statistics to see how great they are coming together, all of which are still under 20, except Macagno who is 25. And to think we still have M'ong, and Marini in their prime, San Marino look unstoppable at the back.

Class of 2035-36

18. Nicola Girolamo (Player 2021-2034) Career

A player who often went under the radar, he was a fantastic and loyal player out on the left from Serie B to Serie A. He became one of the first defenders in the team to become an attacking based wiger, notching up 37 assists and 11 goals in his 12 year career at the club. Durig his prime, he was superb, averaging 7.30 in two back to back seasons, including 5 out of the 7 full seasons with over 7 as an average rating of his performance. His final few seasons seasons saw his first tea appearances drop to just single figures with him only managing 18 i his final 5 seasons as competition for the left back spot and higher Serie A honors pushed him more as a supporting role player. Though his time ended at just 31 due to injuries and a lack of fooball, for the prominent rise of San Marino to a Serie A and European Force, Girolamo was right amisdt the hear of the action and has a number of awards and medals to prove just that, being involved in numerous Super Cup and Italian Cup finals as well as a number of Serie A runner up seasons and one Winning campaign back in 2031.

After being named in our second Major Tournament, we were given a slim chance of progressing through the group stages of Euro 2036 with a tough draw of Austria, Germany and Sweden. We needed results against Austria and Sweden to stand a chance. As I prepared a few months out from the tournament, is picked the following 23 players for the tour

Selected 23 Man Squad

23mansquad.jpg

The line up I intended to use was pretty similar to that of the last World Cup, with a formation that has now grown to become familiar amongst the current set of players, utilising a 4-1-3-2 formation with the deep lying play maker and a more central, attacking unit holding our midfield, while the two pacey wingers whip in crosses.

Intended line up and formation

News

The side lost to 45th ranked Guinea 3-2 in our first Euro warm up match after taking a half time lead of 2-1.

Giancobbi was injured in our warm up win against Kazakhstan leaving Felici to come into the starting side. The side won the match 1-0 but we are a bit concerned with a key player out injured for potentially the next 3 weeks.

The resulting loss of our winger, Giancobbi and resting some names to get to know the level of ability in the whole squad led us to a 2-1 loss over Armenia. Bucci made his return from injury late in the second half which was a positive.

Our final and toughest warm up match against 40th ranked Australia did not bode well as we lost 3-0, lacking key player Mularoni, Bucci and Giancobbi in the middle. Without our midfield three, we look a much weaker side.

Match Day 1

We had a tough group and needed results against Sweden and Austria to progress outright, or hope results go our way to get the best placed third side. Either way, our opening game was our make or break for the tournament as we had Sweden first up.

Heavy underdogs, we came out and surprised everyone, including ourselves, as we struck 2 goals in the opening 10 minutes. One to Della Vale after 4 minutes as a lovely one two made space for him down the line and saw him cut in on his defender to strike from just inside the box, while the second was just 3 minutes later, Bollini getting on to a fantastic through ball that beat the offside trap and put him one on one with the keeper for an easy finish.

The game remained evenly poised and saw Sweden have a chance cleared off the line towards the end of the first half which really dented their confidence and boosted ours as we went in to the break with a 2 goal lead. We spoke about doing this for the fans and achieving a result here was imperative and the boys seemed to have taken this with passion on their sleeve, ripping right in to Sweden again in the opening stages. A ball was whipped in from Mularoni, just inside Sweden's half, the looping ball finding Bollini lurking on he edge of the area. He got to it first, diving to reach his head on to the ball, and just enough to angle it towards the Swedish goal. The ball had enough on it to slip pas the Swedish keeper and make it 3-0 a virtually put the game beyond doubt, just 52 minutes in to game.

Sweden continued to push, as we started to defend a bit harder and as the game drew on Sweden became more and more astray. With 5 minutes left, Sweden self destructed and a poor back pass was latched on to by Angelini who raced away to make it 4-0. Not only did we pull of a huge upset, but we won by a large margin. We are now virtually guaranteed passage to the next round, bar some overly poor performances, thanks to some fantastic finishing and a great result.

Match Day 2 v Germany

A tough game, but one that we just needed to play well in to keep us in that good position and progress to the knock out stages. We went out perhaps a bit too defensive and it showed with Germany dominating the match early on and after Neubert scored on 7 minutes were already on the back foot. Germany dominated the game but our defensive line was up to the task, Angelini making some great saves while Della Valle intervened more than just a few crucial balls. We held off until half time, the score still 1-0 with us having every chance of getting a result from the game. We came close a few times, the best of which in the second half, a shot that took a deflection and had the keeper beaten, only to hit the bar and go wide.

By mid second half, it was evident though that Germany had the game in the bag and were playing possession football, trying to wear us down in typical tiki taka traditional style. It paid of on 77 minute as they rounded us with some beautiful passing to make it 2-0 and put the game beyond doubt. Statistically speaking it looked like a walk in the park, but in actuality it was even more dominating and just showed how wide the gap is between us and the top teams in the world.

After match day two our group looked like this:

Germany 2 v 0 San Marino

Sweden. 0 v 1 Austria

Germany's win sees them through with one match left to play, while Sweden now require a big win over Germany and results in the other match to progress.

Austria and ourselves are locked on 3 points each and facing each other for the second place spot and this will be the game of the group to watch.

Match Day 3 v Austria

We were looking for a result from this game to guarantee progression through to the next round, but we went on the back foot almost right from the get go. Austria took the game to us and we were lucky not to go behind within the first 10 minutes as some top class saves from Angelini kept the scores level. We managed a single shot for the whole half and a weak one at that, whilst Austria piled on the pressure and 33 minutes in, we finally cracked as Moises' header beat Angelini from the corner. The half came along and I tried to instruct the guys we just needed one goal and then hold out. A draw was possible and if we could get it, we would go through.

Austria clearly had plans of their own though and were even more deadly at the opening of the second half. Forster was weaving through us in the opening 5 minutes, so it was no surprise that eventually he was brought down in a lazy tackle from Pelliccioni in the box, awarding a penalty to which he converted to make it 2-0 That essentially ended the tie as we did not even get breathing space, Austria ripping us to threads, much the same was as Germany in the previous game.

The score could and should of been more, but Angelini had a fantastic game in goals, as shown with his 8.1 in a losing side. 2-0 was the final score, while Sweden managed to pull one over the Germans 2-1 to keep it a close group, but we slumped our heads as we crashed out in the group stages in third place...

austra.jpg

...Or did we? After match day three our group looked like this:

rnd3.jpg

Germany 1 v 2 Sweden

Austria.. 2 v 0 San Marino

Germany's loss to Sweden kept the group open, and thankfully, Angelini's great keeping kept us with the better for and against to retain third. The whole team, myself included, cmpletely forgot about the best placed third placed sides progressing and automatically though our campaign was all over after the 2-0 loss to Austria. But as we trudged off the field, our fans celebrated as the around the ground results came through. San Marino had made it as one of the best third placed sides.

We turned from upset to ecstatic in seconds as we ran over to our fans to celebrate the progression, despite 2 losses in our 3 group games. We had made it to the second round and that is all that matters... We live to fight another day.

Second Round v Bulgaria

We got lucky as we did in the World Cup and drew a side that we could challenge in the second round. Bulgaria are a better side, but I was confident that we could put the game to them if we started brightly. We did, as our aggressive approach led to striker Bollini latching on to a long ball and slotting home past the keeper just 3 minutes in to the game. Bulgaria were clearly shocked and our ruthless start and tried to reshuffle and settle the game. All this did was give us more space in the middle as they tried to settle our wingers and compress our strikers, and Zanotti shot a rocket of a ball from about 30 yards out to ripple the net making it 2-0 within 15 minutes.

Bulgaria had no answers, and we came again, having another shot saved by the keeper in tremendous fashion. Our aggressive stance to the opening of the game got us in trouble though as Bucci and Zanotti picked up quick yellows and forced me to drop our aggression for risk of getting a player sent off. This instantly let Bulgaria back in the game as just 5 minutes later, Bulgaria beat some lax defending to streak through and slot home to make it 2-1 after 38 minutes.

I decided to take a risk and bumped up our attacking a few minutes after we kicked off again, hoping to make some impact just prior to the break, and that we did as right on 45, left back Bollini got above his man to head home from a Bucci cross to make it 3-1 at the break.

I instantly switched to a defensive stance and subbed players who had picked up a yellow here or there in the first half, leaving one up my sleeve for time wasting or emergencies later in the game. Bulgaria, obviously, came out more aggressive and we were able to counter with the defensive mentality and withheld them for the majority of the second half with no incident, however Mulaoni had picked up a yellow early in the second and was putting in some rash challenges and came close to getting a second booking, also giving a way a freekick on the edge of the area. I subbed him off for risk of a red and parked the bus to stop the free kick and hold off for the rest of the half. Possession swung massivley in favour of Bulgaria as we essentially had 11 men behind the ball, but it was enough to hold on to a 3-1 win and make it to the Quarter finals!!

No real upsets, though Germany crashed out 3-0 to the Spaniards, while England lost in extra time to a very well organised Czech side. France struggled against Slovenia but won in extra time while the Swiss won in the only game that went to penalties. Italy and the Dutch went through fairly confidently, and on paper so too did we, though the stats show a much different side to the story.

Quarter Final Matches

qtrw.jpg

Spain and France got the best of the draws as they faced Austria and Us respectively. We were given little to no chance, but the team was full of confidence so I knew we would at least remain competitive.

Holland and Italy were the other favourites, but both had difficult matches in the Swiss and the Czech who could prove very tough competitors.

Quarter Final v France

I looked through the French line up prior to the match, and besides Granier, Coulibaly and Diabate, their side was not as formidable as I was expecting. Statistically speaking, Mularoni has fantastic stats for his Defensive Midfield position, while Bollini is a decent striker. Though well below the standard of Granier, he is capable of playing with the best, While Angelini is arguably a better keeper in the key areas and just came of a winning Serie A campaign.

To me, the match looked a lot closer than a complete write off as many were predicting and we started out on par with France as both sides traded blows and played a cautious brand of football. France started to dominate possession about 25 minutes in and so I moved from our control play to a counter attacking style. At first, the French took full advantage and even scored, before the ref chalked it off for an offside. This seemed to give France more confidence as they started to push up higher, and that is when we decided to make our move, Mularoni, normally a defensive midfield player, stayed up on an attack from the French, losing his marker in the process. The defence made light work of the attacking play and got it out to Giancobbi who used his speed to quickly get the ball up the field, before laying off a mid range cross which Mularoni got to about 30 yards out. He tipped the ball past his marker, caught up to it and took a shot from just outside the box before the defender regathered to challenge him. 1-0 and the fans went ballistic. Half the stadium was cheering for the biggest underdogs of the tournament, almost equivalent to our entire population! We held on for the remarriage 5 minutes of the half to take a narrow and unexpected 1-0 lead into half time.

The French did not take too kindly to going down against the run of play and put in a good fight as the attacked us much harder in the second half. We went completely defensive but it just did not seem to ease the pressure France applied and it all told when Granier equalised. Until the Ref decided to call the goal as offside once again; The second goal chalked off for the French in the game. This seemed to have affected them as they lost their way a little and I noticed this as we had a small pocket of possession and they made some sloppy passes. I decided to take a risk, and pushed for a second goal. One that caught everyone by surprise as we won a free kick, which Mularoni took quickly to an amazingly aware Bollini. Catching the French off guard, we struck our second on 65 minutes. Back to the wall, we defended for dear life as the French threw everything at us, including the keeper!

We managed to hold on though, and we progress to the Semi Finals of Euro 2036, riding the coat tails come the droves of fans and bandwagoners who love an underdog and we hope to give them an entertainig semi final.

Semi Finals

We got lucky this time around as we get the Czech. Though they beat Italy, they are the easiest road to the final, While the Dutch face off against Spain. A replay of 2010 i a hard fought Semi Final match.

Either way, we get 3rd place play-off at worst, and that is nothing to cry about. We are over the moon at our run of form.

Semi Final v Czech Republic

We had a pretty lucky Draw as we could of got either Holland or Spain. The Czech are ranked 39th While we are 44th at the moment, so this is a match that we could win, especially after beating the 6th ranked French.

We started really shaky though and the Czech were all over us, taking a whopping 7 shots in the opening 20 minutes against us. As the Czech's battered our goal, we literally had no response, and so I decided to roll with it and play containing football. I got everyone behind the ball and we defended for our life, not allowing a single shot to the Czech's for the remaining 25 minutes. We didn't get one in ourselves, but that did not concern me at this point. What did though, was an injury to Matteo Zanotti out on the right of our defence, right on 45 minutes. He has been solid all tournament and this was a real blow. Giannini has the better attributes, but as we have seen all tournament, form, morale, will and hunger have proven a more persevering skill set and so Della Valle was brought on due to better form.

His impact was immediate as just seconds into the second half he created an overlap on the right and had a great shot, generating a corner from the outstretched Czech keeper. From the resulting corner, Pelliccioni wound back the clock and his legs as he leaped high to get a glancing header on the ball and put it in the back of the net!! 1-0 oncee again against the run of play, but from then on we took control as we came out of our shell. The Czech had another good chance as they rattled the bar, and then the tap in was saved amazingly by Angelini who is a great chance of making the team of the tournament with some stunning saves.

But despite the chance, it took only 11 minutes for us to virtually put the game beyond doubt as Angelini latched on to a counter attacking move where the ball was once again passed through Della Valle on the right, with an overlap leading to Bucci whipping in a deep cross. Bollini missed the ball initially, but at the back post was Angelini who connected well to shatter the hearts of the Czech fans, as well as the net of their goal.

The game petered out at this point as the Czech Republic gradually lost their nerve and we stepped in to ours. What started out as an overwhelming amount of possession to them, swayed to virtually even by the end of the match as we stabilised the game and made some key subs to rest the likes of Giancobbi for the final.

We made it! Somehow, after believing we were out in the group stages to a plucky Austria side, have made it to out first final of a major tournament (all honesty, I was running around my room and freaked my girlfriend out. She just doesn't understand). the atmosphere was euphoric and we acted as though we had won the final already, running to our fans to celebrate.

We were to face Spain, Who comprehensively out muscled Holland 3-0. While the players continued their celebrations, I quietly bit my lip... Both excited about making the final, but anxious about taking an absolute flogging from the Spaniards. A loss here would of been a success, but where were we to go from here? Would expectations be set higher? Would we be able to achieve such heights again? This was our best generation yet, but we were punching well above our weight. I just didn't want this to be a heavyweight v flyweight final and embarrass the country.

I quickly scurried up the tunnel... I had a final to prepare for. One I was **** scared about.

Final

Unbelievable is an understatement. We seem to show up in big games as we slip against the lighter teams in friendlies, even in the last two tournaments, while we pull out the performance of our lives against better opposition. Looking all the way back to Euro Draw with Ireland back in 2015 when they were ranked number 1 in the world and our first game against Sweden, where we lost 7-0; To beating Sweden 3-1 and making a final 21 years since we started becoming competitive. It is tremendous.

Bring on the Final!!!!

Third Place Play-off

Euro 2036 Final - Spain v San Marino

Pre Match

prematch.jpg

Both Sides have 3 players out, with us missing 2 starters in Matteo and Nicolo Zanotti. Riccardo Mularoni also sits out with a sprained ankle but was an unlikely started anyway with Angelini and Bollini favourites to start.

Starting Line Ups

finallineup.jpg

A few players look a little jaded. Pelliccioni with 83% fitness is the most out of shape with Bucci and captain Mularoni both on 90%. Not at full fitness coming in to the match will make the task of keeping up even harder, but we are determined to not go down with out a fight.

First Half

We chose a defensive outlook for the match and it did not turn out as we expected as Spain struck within 5 minutes taking a 1-0 lead early on. If we thought pressure from previous games was a lot, then this was like hell and back as Spain hailed shots at our goal. Aitor Lopes struck what should of been his second just minutes later, but the goal was cleared off the line, while on 25 minutes Spain had a goal chalked off.

I decided Defence was not our friend ad flipped the script by going attacking against a free flowing Spanish side. The result, nothing, nada. Just more Spaniards approaching us like a bull to a red cloth. By half time they had 14 shots, and Angelini was playing like superman to keep the ball out of the net. I riled the boys up, told them how great it was to be here, but that we weren't done yet. We ramped up the energy and the boys ran out. 1-0 down... We can come back, can't we?

I was just happy to still be in the match in a game that we should of been wiped of the park.

Second Half

We came out and went straight onto the attack as half time speech really seemed to lift them. Despite our high though, it was still all Spain as they continued to flurry shots at us. Somehow though, against the odds, we finally got a strike, Bucci to be precise, took a good counter attacking run and landed our first strike, which also levelled the scores!!

Somehow, we were in the game. I do not know how, but we hung in there with everything we had. As Spain amounted close to 70% possession, something had to give and eventually it did, as Spain's Lopez stuck a second Only to see this goal also disallowed. The second goal to be disallowed... Could this be a sign as with the France match?

I had though so as despite us having a meagre 2 shots, it was 1-1 coming into the final 10 minutes. I switched to defence. I wanted to last until extra time. We seemed good for it, Pelliccioni, Mularoni and Angelini holding us well at the back, until finally the damn could not hold back the flood that was Spain and Lopez finally got his double (his 4th to hit the back of the net tonight). My head slumped.

The lads have done well to hold out Spain for 83 minutes but it had to come. I was readying for the full time whistle as we kicked off what would be the final 7 minutes. I turned to our bench to congratulate them only to hear a roar go up from the stands. DAMN IT! I thought. Spain have scored again! I swivelled around.

I saw blue and white flags everywhere and Bollini under a pile by the corner flag. I looked at the time - 86 minutes - Spain 2 - San Mario... 2. We scored! We struck back while I was busy licking my wounds and i suddenly flashed back to my club days where we pulled a remarkable comeback against Palermo. Could we do it here today?

The 4 minutes went by at a snails pace but eventually the 90 minutes ended. 2-2. Extra time. I was numb. Either way, the team has played valiantly, but now, I wanted this. I didn't just want to be competitive. I wanted to win!

Extra Time

I couldn't believe it. Extra time, with Spain! in the Euro finals!

I had little words for the boys. I said "have fun. No one expected us to get this far, we have nothing to prove now. Regardless, we will go down in history. Whether on the trophy or as runners up. You will leave tonight with a medal. A medal that says San Marino, even for one tournament. Even for one game, are one of the World's best. We have come a long way for last in the Fifa rankings. Go and enjoy it, you have earned it. Tonight, to me... to the world, more importantly, to the country... You are champions"

I walked out of the dressing room, the deafening sound of the crowd could not be heard. All I could hear was the sound of the players in the dressing room. This game was ours, no. It was theirs.

The Extra time kicked off and once again Spain dominated. We knew they were the better team, but tonight, that did not matter. Our defence was as solid as it had ever been. Spain managed a total of 24 shots, we had a total of 3. They had 70% possession to our 30 but eve that wasn't enough.

The turning point was the 91st minute, just 1 minute into extra time. Saracino, our substitute made a challenge for the ball with everything he had, got to it too. But came out second best. He stood and hobbled but could not carry on. Tears in his eyes, the feeling of letting a nation and his team down. We had no more substitutions. Not only was the statistics heavily favouring Spain, now, so too were the numbers on the field.

I relayed some messages from the bench, as Mularoni the captain ran over to me. I wanted to change tactics to play narrower, bring in the wingers. Mularoni made me change my mind. "The middle is mine. We may not win it now, but we will make it to penalties. Have faith" he said. My gut agreed. 10 men faced a full strength Spain squad for 20 minutes, a squad that flung everything at us so much so that we did not even see it once...

...Until Spain too had a player removed from the equation. With 10 minutes to go, Manu Marcos pulled up. he took a knock earlier and was just not able to continue. Spain, like us, had no more substitutions and the playing field was levelled. Spain remained relentless for the final 10 minutes. How could a small country of 32 thousand hold a Football giant like Spain! It angered the purists, puzzled the the neutrals and ignited the underdog fans.

10 minutes passed. we had made it. Mularoni simply smiled.... And walked to the Centre circle. From now, it was simply a game of luck.

Penalties

It was our first shoot out since a friendly match a few years back where I mentioned we may come down to this one day. Many of the players were much younger then and were adamant that they would not need it as part of this Sammarinese generation. We just weren't good enough. We had the shoot out for the drawn match anyway and lost.

Juan Cruz Stepped up for Spain first and slotted calmly to the left of the keeper. 1-0 Spain

Giacobbi stepped up for San Marino and powered the ball to the bottom right. 1-1 even.

Rubio for Spain, inches the ball just wide of Angelini to make it 2-1 Spain.

Bucci approached calmly, perhaps too much so as he floated the ball to Naves to save it down the middle. 2-1 Spain

Olivar had the chance to edge Spain closer and struck to the top corner. SAVED! Angelini finger tips wide. 2-1 Spain

Davide Bollini offered his hand to take the penalty. to level things, he struck it well and rippled the net. 2-2 even

Anibal for Spain stepped up, looking nervous but composed in his run in. Perfect penalty. 3-2 Spain

Marco Bollini for San Marino walked to the box. The hero so far with 5 goals in the tournament. smacked the ball only for Nevas to tip it wide. 3-2 Spain

This was it. No more chances. Angelini between the sticks lined up Lopez, the man who hit 2 goals that stood, and 2 that were denied. Would he be the hero for Spain? Would Angelini keep it alive for at least one more round? The ground hushed to a still. You could hear the footsteps of the run up from the side line. Hell, you could here it from the top of the stands.

5 steps in the run up, but it took an age. Until *bang*... The boot struck the ball. It all seemed slow motion at first. Angelini diving in the right direction. He was going to save it! He had to...

The ball had made it... made it past the hand of Angelini, enough drift to beat him. After it made it through, everything seemed to go back to regular speed. Lopez had scored. 4-2 Spain...

Spain had won the European Championships of 2036 on penalties.

pend.jpg

I sat gobsmacked. Heart in my mouth. Not at the result, but at our players. They shook each and every hand of the Spaniards that day, then run over to the fans and shared the moment with them. One of the most tense finals I have been involved in and they took it like a fan's day. I walked up to Mularoni and asked him how they could be so cheerful after such a heart wrenching loss, after all, I was virtually in tears on the sideline.

He looked at me and said, sporting a big grin "You told us to have fun... There is always the next one" and ran off to join the others...

I thought to myself and promised... "I will not leave until I can fulfil those words... The next one. The next final"

I am pretty devastated to loose in such a way, but have promised myself this... I will continue this challenge until I can win a tournament with the national team. I felt it impossible before and was happy to end the challenge with winning the CL... but now... now I need more. Time to make write history.
