The San Marino Double Challenge Returns for FM 2009

It's back again and it's pretty simple. Take the San Marino club team from the lower Italian leagues to Serie A glory. The second part is to get cracking with the international side and firstly try and get them to qualify for a major tournament. If you get that far then why not go on and try and win one!

Unfortunately the San Marino side aren't doing too well this season and are currently in the relegation play-off slots. Hopefully they will get better and we can have this challenge again next year. Otherwise I'll just have to learn how to code and implement Serie D myself. ;)

Setting Up Your Game

It's recommended that you download and update your game to version 9.2.0 before you start this. You can find the latest patch here

Leagues: Italy

Lowest Divisions: Serie C2

Database Size: User Choice

Retain Players from Nation: San Marino

Rules

As before, this is just a fun challenge to see how we all get on. If you are going to cheat then that is up to you but please don't come on the forums and boast about your achievements if you have cheated.

Good luck! :)

I've played through quite a few seasons so there won't be many screenshots for the seasons up to 2020/21, apologies for that.

They’ll be done in batches of 3, with separate updates for club and national team.

Club

2008/2009- Serie C2/B

Transfers: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/transfers20082009.jpg

A 2nd place finish in Serie C2/B meant that we were in the playoffs, which were negotiated fairly simply, although we did have the team that finished 18th to thank for their draw against the 3rd placed team which secured our 2nd place, as we drew and were promoted thanks to the higher league finish. Daniel Bradaschia was instrumental in this, his 22 goals for the season is still a record total. Manuel Marani didn’t perform as well, as some of you may have noticed from the records thread. He didn’t score once all season, but he played decently and got a few assists.

Best XI: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/best1120082009.jpg

2009/2010- Serie C1/A

Transfers: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/transfers20092010.jpg

We didn’t turn a profit for transfers which didn’t help matters, but it was a decent first year in Serie C1, which culminated in a 7th placed finish. The main problem was that we just weren’t consistent enough, with our longest winning streak being a meagre 2 long. We nearly had another 20 goal season, but unfortunately Tagro Baleghue just came up short and finished with 18 goals, still a good season by anyone’s (Except Super Kevin Phillips maybe) standards. As you may have guessed from the transfers screenshot, we got Fiorentina as a parent club and to be honest they saved us, 3 of our best players coming from them. Emanuele Urbinati, one of the youth project players was easily first choice right winger, cementing his position with 28 fine appearances.

Best XI: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/best1120092010.jpg

2010/2011- Serie C1/B

Transfers: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/transfers20102011.jpg

We were switched to Girone B for this season, and we handled the change brilliantly, forcing our way into the playoffs with a 3rd place finish but we couldn’t continue, and we were knocked out in the Semi-Final. Paolo Rossi was our hero this year, becoming top scorer with 18 goals, the second year in a row that total has won the golden boot. Where possible we kept hold of our better players, but if I felt the fee was good enough, then I had to let them go, especially considering the financial situation. Urbinati made another 28 appearances this season, he is still yet to score however.

Best XI: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/bestxi20102011.jpg

National Team

I took over the national side towards the end of the first season, expecting a few smashing before I could get the quality high enough to start progressing. They were at the bottom of their qualification group, as expected, with 0 points, as expected. These were the last 2 results of the group phase:

2009:

San Marino 1-4 Czech Republic

San Marino 2-1 Slovenia

Yes you read that right, a win in my second game in charge. It was Urbinati’s debut for the national side and boy was it spectacular. He set up Manuel Marani, the same guy who couldn’t score to save his life on the club scene, twice in the opening 20 minutes to give us a 2-0 lead. Slovenia pulled one back late on but we held on for a famous victory.

2010:

After we left 2009 on a high following a famous victory, we began 2010 with an even better one;

San Marino 4-0 Albania

Andy Selva, playing in what turned out to be his last game, was a fitting star in this game, as he hit a first half hat trick to take him to double figures for goals, truly a San Marinese legend.

Russia 2-0 San Marino (Friendly)

San Marino 0-2 Finland

Malta 0-0 San Marino- Our nearest rivals in the group, so at least it wasn’t a loss.

San Marino 0-3 Belarus

Bosnia & Herzegovina 2-0 San Marino

Sweden 5-0 San Marino

Business as usual for San Marino in the rest of 2010, which began so promisingly

2011:

A fairly bog-standard year in the annals of San Marino. We began with a hammering from Bulgaria and it didn’t get easier.

Bulgaria 6-2 San Marino (Friendly)- A landmark in this game was Fabrizio Gorini, who will become fairly important later on, scoring his first goal for the country, as did Urbinati. Unfortunately it didn’t matter too much.

San Marino 1-5 Spain (Griselli- A regen)

Scotland 3-0 San Marino

Finland 4-1 San Marino (One of the Maranis)

San Marino 2-3 Bosnia & Herzegovina (O.G, Toccacelli)

San Marino 1-1 Malta (Gorini)

Belarus 4-1 San Marino (Gorini)

San Marino 1-5 Sweden (O.G)

Spain 4-0 San Marino

San Marino 0-3 Scotland

Gorini, who already has 3 goals in 10 caps and looks to have a decent chance of beating Selva’s record if he can avoid injuries, I won’t reveal what happens but if you want to predict how many he’ll get in his career there might be a prize for whoever gets it right.

So far qualified out of group stage in Serie C Cup, and played two matches in the league. Struggled to sign many players in pre-season, quite a few of the frees took different clubs. Cancelled affiliates now, got a couple of decent loan signings and purchased a great 18 yr old striker, who now I've signed him over 10 clubs want.

First league game ended 0-0. Got two injuries in 78 minute, after made my subs, so was lucky to draw.

injury1.jpg

Second match had a stormer.

sm1.jpg

Finances aren't great atm, and the youth team is severally bloated with crap youngsters on really long contracts which may become a problem.

So far I am optimistic at least for the club side, will worry about national team later.

2011/2012- Serie C1/B

Transfers:http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/trans20112012.jpg

Not a brilliant year for progression to be honest, we flirted with the playouts all year and only a good run towards the end resulted in an 11th placed finish. Paolo Rossi was again top scorer, this time with 12 goals, and he also set up 5 for others. It was in this year that Alessandro Ceccoli, another youth project, broke through into the first team at the age of 16, making 12 appearances and getting 2 assists. I decided that this year was vital in securing the future of the club, and so not many players were bought in on permanent deals, the majority being loans.

Best XI: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/bestxi20112012.jpg

2012/2013- Serie C1/A

Transfers:http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/trans20122013.jpg

Big moves out of the club this year, with financial troubles still present and so £1.8 million was bought in through sales, including Urbinati out for 500k and Paolo Rossi for 425k. More loans and frees were the order of the day, except for the 24k capture of 17 year old Floriano Capecchi, a Dm/MC from Serie D Valle de Giovinco. He looks to have the potential to be a first teamer in Serie B, and has all the hallmarks of a club legend, with excellent technical stats even at this young age (No screenshots, sorry, I didn’t think to take any).

A different Girone, but the same result, with another 11th place finish. Fabrizio Gorini, San Marino starlet, came to the fore this year in the absence of Rossi, scoring 15 goals and finishing as top scorer.

Best XI: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/bestxi20122013.jpg

2013/2014- Serie C1/B

Transfers:http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/trans201314.jpg

More big moves out, including vice captain Giacomo Zappacosta for 325k, sold by the chairman. Most of the in-transfers were players with potential, such as 16 year old Spanish DM Alejandro, or 17 year old Marcos, another Spaniard.

In the league there were signs of progression, as we finished 7th, just outside the playoffs. Andrea Singorini, loan star of last year and bought in on a free this year, was named as captain and he really helped steady the ship after losing Zappacosta. Not a big year for goals however, as Signorini’s CB partner Lorenzo Garcia Fernandez finished top scorer with 7, mostly from penalties.

Best XI: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/bestxi201314.jpg

Capecchi, still only 18, made his 50th appearance for the club.

Nation

2012:

Mostly a year of friendlies, with only 3 competitive fixtures, all of which were lost.

Israel 2-0 San Marino (Friendly)

American Samoa 0-0 San Marino (Friendly)

San Marino 2-1 Wallis and Futuna (Friendly) (Guerra x2- Youth player from Cagliari)

Turkey 4-2 San Marino (Friendly) (O.G, Gorini)

San Marino 0-2 Italy (Friendly)

San Marino 0-1 Wales (WCQ)

Belarus 4-0 San Marino (WCQ)

San Marino 0-3 Slovenia (WCQ)

A fairly big year for 19 year old Marco Guerra, who burst onto the scene with a double in our 2-1 win over Wallis and Futuna. Gorini also grabbed a goal this year, taking him to 4.

2013:

Another fairly standard year for San Marino

San Marino 2-0 Bhutan (Friendly) (Guerra, Gorini)

Italy 2-1 San Marino (Nanni)- An 89th minute goal by Giuseppe Rossi broke Sanmarinese hearts.

San Marino 1-1 Chad (Friendly) (Guerra)

Denmark 5-0 San Marino

Wales 2-1 San Marino (Guerra)

Slovenia 6-3 San Marino (Guerra, Valentini, Gorini)

San Marino 0-3 Italy

Belarus 0-0 San Marino- Our first point of the group

San Marino 1-3 Denmark (Gorini)

Gorini moves onto 7 goals for San Marino, rapidly closing in on Selva’s record of 10. Guerra is also doing well, he is onto 6 goals.

2014:

Like 2012, another friendly dominated year.

San Marino 0-1 Albania (Friendly)

Burundi 0-1 San Marino (Friendly) (Niccola Ciacci)

San Marino 2-0 Djibouti (Friendly) (Gorini, Toccacelli)

San Marino 2-0 Cook Islands (Friendly) (Marani, Malafronte)

Bulgaria 2-0 San Marino

San Marino 0-4 Czech Republic

Azerbaijan 1-1 San Marino (Nanni)

San Marino 1-0 Faroe Islands (Friendly) (Gorini)

Guerra retired after being released by Cagliari and nobody picked him up, but Gorini is now on 9 goals, only 1 short of Selva’s record, which he must have thought would stand for a while.

Just started this challenge now the new patch is out! Put on a poor display in the Serie C cup but joint top of the league early doors!

Sold a few players, and brought some in, mainly free's and loans.... my star players at the moment are goalkeeper Giuseppe Ingrassia (Free) and striker Antonio Gaeta (Loan). Also got two players coming in the January window.

2014/2015- Serie C1/A

Transfers: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/trans201415.jpg

Same old story, a mid table finish and transfers designed to bring money into the club. We finished 12th with 40 points this year, and didn’t get higher than 7th all season. Angel, another Spanish player bought in cheaply, finished as top scorer, with 8 goals although he had to play a few too many games for my liking to get them. Capecchi featured for the first time in the good lists, with 7 assists. Capecchi was also named player of the year, and is coming up to 100 appearances for the club.

Best XI: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/bestxi201415.jpg

2015/2016- Serie C1/A

Transfers:http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/trans201516.jpg

Another year where the chairman hindered the progression, selling promising winger Stephan Mattioli for £1.5 million and Marcos for £1 million. It didn’t matter though, as there was finally some progression in terms of the challenge. We ended up winning the league with 65 points, a very low points total in comparison to earlier years, but there was no complaints from me. It was another year which didn’t involve many goals, top scorer being midfielder Rafael with 8. Capecchi was again the highest assister, this year with 6 goals. He picked up the player of the year award again. Capecchi is also over 125 appearances for the club. He should get many more appearances and awards in Serie B.

Best XI: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/bestxi201516.jpg

2016/2017- Serie B

Transfers: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/trans201617.jpg

There wasn’t actually much building work done on transfers, I figured that the squad was nearly good enough already, so there was only a few additions, such as the return of Jaakola for £1 million + Zanotti, a youth player. Lorenzo Garcia Fernandez was sold for a million, as he wouldn’t sign a new contract. The disappointment is that he was only a year from nationalisation.

The first year in Serie B for San Marino was a decent one, with a top half finish in our debut season. Olimpico was also expanded to 6500, helping a small amount with the financial area. Angel seems to have found his level, finishing top scorer with 20 goals, the first time a San Marino player has hit 20 since Bradaschia in Serie C2. Capecchi wasn’t the biggest assister this year, that prize went to Angel’s strike partner Luigi Miggiano, who wasn’t the greatest goalscorer but still got 6 in the season. Capecchi did however win the player of the year for the third year in a row, and made his 150th appearance, closing in on Berardi’s record of 181 appearances.

Best XI: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/bestxi201617.jpg

National Team

2015:

Not too many shocks this year, here is a list of the results, plus a bonus screenshot of the rankings.

San Marino 0-1 Switzerland

Serbia 2-0 San Marino (Friendly)

Iceland 1-1 San Marino (O.G)

San Marino 0-1 Bulgaria

San Marino 3-0 Azerbaijan (Gorini x3)- Gorini breaks the record in style, and pushes us into the top 100 in the world for the first time ever-

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/Top100.jpg

Switzerland 1-0 San Marino

Czech Republic 3-1 San Marino (Rossi)

San Marino 0-1 Iceland

A nice bit of progression there, into the top 100 and we didn’t finish bottom of the group either!

2016:

Not many games this year, and no wins, which began a small slide back down the rankings.

Northern Ireland 4-1 (Ceccoli)

San Marino 0-2 Sweden

San Marino 0-2 Germany

2017:

Into the main part of the World Cup Qualification this year;

Slovakia 4-0 San Marino

San Marino 1-1 Moldova (Malafronte)

San Marino 0-2 Northern Ireland

Germany 4-0 San Marino

San Marino 0-2 Slovakia

Sweden 3-0 San Marino

Moldova 1-1 San Marino (Gorini)

13 goals for Gorini now, unlucky? Maybe.

I've read all the San Marino challenges since way back in '06, but have yet to actually try one myself. I don't think I would have the patience for it as I tend to struggle with FM anyway, which is frustrating enough as it is. I have to admire anyone who actually attempts this challenge and manages to win.

2017/2018- Serie B

Transfers:http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/trans201718.jpg

Again, not a great deal of money spent, mostly on potential, with Zbrun, an Argentinian keeper, and Maatouk, a German/Lebanese LW coming in, with hopes of nationalisation. David Aranda joined the growing Spanish contingent at the club, but at 16 he won’t be playing many games just yet. Big moves out were Ramiro Bilbao and Giuseppe Iori for £2.5 million and £2.1 million respectively.

Another 10th finish in the league, in a season which was mostly a consolidatory season. Angel hit 20 goals for the 2nd season in a row, which will make it very difficult to hold onto him, as there are a lot of top clubs interested in him. Right winger Claudio Caldaroni was the biggest assister, and finally broke Capecchi’s hold over the player of the year award, but Capecchi did become the highest appearance maker for the club, making his 200th appearance near the end of the season. Angel smashed the previous record for league goals, and at the end of the season he had reached 48, 2 short of a magical 50.

Best XI:http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/bestxi201718.jpg

2018/2019- Serie B

Transfers:http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/trans201819.jpg

We finally lost Angel, the chairman accepting an offer of £2.2 million for him, and we struggled to replace him over the season. This ended up with a playout finish against Gubbio, and a 3-2 loss away gave little hope, but a 4-0 win at home saved us, so we would be in Serie B next season too. Carlo Antonelli, an 18 year old striker bought in from Verona, finished as top scorer, although he was mostly bought on potential, like every player except for Birsa. Olimpico was expanded again this year, by 3000 to 9500, and we nearly filled it in the playout against Gubbio, only 1 empty seat in the entire ground. Caldaroni again finished with most assists, and it was double figures for the first year in ages, but only just as he finished with 10 assists. Club hero Floriano Capecchi again captured player of the year, obviously determined to not let Caldaroni force him out again.

Best XI: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/bestxi201819.jpg

Yes, that is a goal next to Fabbri’s name, think how Robinson scored against Watford.

2019/2020- Serie B

Transfers:http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/trans201920.jpg

Big movement in and out this season, especially Luca Biondini to Pistoiese for £6 million and Caldaroni to Lazio for £6.25 million. The biggest moves in were mostly for ~£1.5 million, especially an ageing Kerlon, who was bought in to help tutor the midfield, and Massimiliano Carfagna, an AMR/L from Cisco.

There was at least improvement in league position this year, as we began to get over the departures of Angel and Caldaroni. Antonelli again came to the fore in terms of goals and assists, helping us to 13th with 16 goals and 6 assists. Capecchi made his 250th appearance for the club, and he could go on further, maybe to 500 or 600 by the time he retires. He again grabbed player of the year, the 5th time in 6 years he has received the award.

Best XI: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/bestxi201920.jpg

National Team

2018:

Only 3 games this year, all competitive;

San Marino 0-1 Latvia

San Marino 1-3 Sweden (O.G)

Azerbaijan 0-2 San Marino (Rossi x2)

2019:

Not a brilliantly successful year

Italy 2-0 San Marino

Australia 4-2 San Marino (Friendly) (Moretti, Rossi)

San Marino 0-1 Slovakia

Sweden 5-1 San Marino (O.G)

Latvia 2-1 San Marino (Mariotti)

San Marino 0-2 Italy

San Marino 1-0 Azerbaijan (Gorini)

Slovakia 4-3 San Marino (Gorini x3)

17 goals for Gorini in his career, he is now playing for 1860 Munich in the 2.Bundesliga after finishing top scorer for Cottbus, also in 2. Bundesliga. Rossi will be the first San Marinese to play at the top level after Catania were promoted

2020:

A fairly average year which finished brilliantly and sets us up well for 2021 and the rest of World Cup Qualification.

Russia 4-1 San Marino (O.G)

Uruguay 1-2 San Marino (Gorini, Moretti)

San Marino 0-3 Germany

Norway 2-3 San Marino (Rossi x2, Gorini)

Estonia 1-2 San Marino (Urbinati, Ceccoli)- Titani old boys come to the fore.

Those last 2 results lifted us up to 3rd in the qualification group temporarily, Gorini is now 1 away from 20 international goals and we are into the top 75 in the world for the first time ever-

First Year over with. Finished top by 14 points. 22w 9d 3l. Came 2nd in group of C2 super cup. Soon as season finished put half my team on transfer to get rid of the players who were auto signed on start up. Started off loading the youth team, managed to get rid of a few on frees to other clubs, released a few to.

Got some solid loan signings in and a few frees, but running on a small squad again to keep the money rolling in. Season tickets gone up from 354 to over 3000 ;)

2nd Season just started, managed to get to 3rd qualifying round beating a club in my div, then one in Serie B but lost 1-0 away to Parma in 3rd Q round. Few quid better off anyway.

First game away, hoping for a good start, was 2-0 up end of 45 mins. 50 mins my winger gets sent off for 2 yellows, opposition switches to 4-2-4 and I am getting over run. My captain (CB) has nightmare, their winger crosses, hits one of my defenders on the back, scoots across the face of goal, my captain wanders off leaving the ball just sitting there, goal keeper cant run 2 feet and pick up ball, their SC just calmly places the ball in the back of the net. 30 minutes to go, and the pressure is really piling on. 4 players of mine get yellows, 10 shots from them in 14 minutes, think I'm going to buckle. 4 minutes of injury time remaining, my back line goes walk about, striker through on goal, GK saves it and pushes it wide, their winger comes in for an open goal, hits the post, bounces out and another of their strikers heads it towards open net, hits the bar, keeper scrambles and saves, game over, Sheesh, aged me at least a year.

High hopes of getting a mid table finish this year, 3 points a good start, so heres hoping. :)

2020/2021- Serie B

Transfers: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/trans202021.jpg

Big moves in were based on potential, Michele Festa was bought for a combined total of £5 million from his 2 parent clubs, and Mauro Notari was bought for £5.5 million from Lazio. Gorka Velez was another potential buy, the 16 year old keeper becoming Festa’s backup as Markus Miller was past his best. The biggest move out was Massimilliano Carfagna, who left in the opposite direction to Notari, joining Lazio for £5 million. Other big fees were for Michel Blazej, who left for Ternana along with Marco Casella and Andrea Censori for a combined total of £4.5 million.

Another fairly average season, with a 16th placed finish. It’s fair to say we’ve consolidated well in this division but I’d like to see a bit more progression to be honest. Antonelli is starting to become a solid part of the team, with his first 20 goal season which pushed him fairly close to Angel’s record of 48. Thomas Weiner was the biggest assister, getting 9 over the course of the season. In this season Floriano Capecchi became the first San Marino player to ever reach 300 league appearances, and he was also appointed as captain, cementing his legend status for the club. Antonelli was named his vice captain and this seemed to spur him on to break Capecchi’s hold over the player of the year award.

Best XI:http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/bestxi202021.jpg

2021/2022

Transfers: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/trans202122.jpg

Not many big money moves in, and 4 of the 5 transfers were mostly based on potential. In fact, Leonardo Gonzalez ended up with 34 assists and 18 goals in the U-20 league. Gianfranco Graziano was the only “established” player who was bought in, and Mantova must have regretted allowing him to leave on a free, as he score 28 goals (a new record), set up 10, and along with Carlo Antonelli, who became the club’s top goalscorer, and scored another 23 to add to his collection, they both fired us to the top of Serie B. A couple of minor wobbles threatened our position, but we held of Cavese’s challenge to finish win the title and promotion with 2 games remaining. In fact, our youngsters ended up winning both of their games that they played after we won the title, so we finished with a total of 87 points from 42 games. Unsurprisingly, Grazioni won the player of the year title, and I was named manager of the year for Serie B. Grazioni unfortunately missed out on the top goalscorer award, but Raul Pareja won player of the year and Antonelli came 3rd. We were also named overachievers of the year and Gazioni won signing of the year.

National Side

2021:

All qualifiers this year, and unfortunately we couldn’t capitalise on our good position that had been earned from our 2 consecutive wins last year.

Northern Ireland 4-0 San Marino

San Marino 0-2 Russia

Germany 6-0 San Marino- Not my proudest moment it has to be said

Estonia 1-3 San Marino (Malafronte, Gorini x2)- Goals 20 and 21 for Gorini

San Marino 1-2 Northern Ireland (Ceccoli)- We took the lead in this one but failed to hold on and capitulated in the last 10 minutes

San Marino 0-2 Norway

Russia 3-1 San Marino (Urbinati)

Still, not a bad qualification, as we finished with our highest points total yet.

2022 (To June):

A year composed entirely of friendliness

San Marino 2-1 Poland (Malafronte, Gorini)- Best win for a while against a side ranked 40th (22 for Gorini)

San Marino 3-1 Serbia (O.G, Gorini, Francioni)- Another good win, Francioni scored on his debut (23 for Gorini)

Kuwait 0-3 San Marino (Gorini x2, Moretti)- Lifted us back into the top 75 (Goals 24 and 25 for Gorini)

So, we have now caught up with where I am in the game, and the next post will be a summary of some of San Marino’s stars, and I will report the progress of San Marino in Serie A on a month by month basis.

Only Signorini and Williams, but I have a couple coming through in a year or so, Capecchi declared himself for Italy just before accepting citizenship, as did Dragone which was annoying. At the moment Pareja sees no benefit in taking up citizenship.

San Marino Summary Page.

Right then, we’ve caught up and so here is a summary of the club so far and some of the stars who helped me get to Serie A. It’s quite fitting that we caught up as the club gained promotion.

San Marino Facilities Information:

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/kroblues/sanmarinoinfo.jpg

The stadium has reached its maximum expansion at 13000, so a new one will be needed soon I reckon to help progression. Training facilities are also at the top development phase according to the board, youth facilities are currently being upgraded.

Records:

Nationally, there has been a lot of progression over the years I have played, from the depths of 200th to the heights of the top 75. Here is the rankings graph of San Marino from October 2020 to the present day-

That's very weird, we have the same goal keeper, Ansi Jaakola. And no I hadn't seen him in your team before i got him beginning of the season.

Ok, update of 2nd season, yes, back to back promotions! Started off well, had a lot of draws in the middle and was very squeaky bum time near the end. Last half season we went on a great run and went from 7th to 1st!

Had to win 2 out of last 3 matches to ensure promotion. 3 out of 4 first team striker injured but rest of squad was fit and well.

3rd from last game was against Sassuolo at home, we dominated the game from start to finish, but strikers were yet again not shooting well. My start player of the season (wbr) got injured and all I had on the bench was a very unfit chap who had just game back off injury himself. He popped up in the box and scored a 3 yarder! Yeah! Opposition werent offering anything going forward so was just a case of trying to widen our lead, which never happened.

Sass Match

Next match saw us against Foligno, who were 3 from bottom, away. Saw this as an easy victory to cement the title. Little did I know! Still only one decent striker fit, so gave an U20 youngster his first game, he was rubbish! First half they dominated us and were threatening our goal all the time, every time our strike force got the ball they either fell over or passed it to the opposition, things werent going well. Rang the changes, and changed my wbl for a chap who just came back from long term injury, needless to say he scored in 86th minute! Promotion!

Fol Match

Reason for success really was slight change of tactics mid way through season, putting a DM in place and a defensive unit that were fantastic all season. 3 loan signings all played well (DC x1, WBl x1,ST x1) Striker was top scorer on 14 goals, whole team had a lot of 1-0s except versus weaker teams, which we had some high scoring games.

Season Overview

Well a great season over, some serious rebuilding needed for next season. Have very little real quality, especially up front and bank balance isnt great at 100k even though was running at 4k under wage budget throughout whole season.

2022/2023- Serie A Transfer Window (July/August)

Quite a few players in, quite a few out as we rebuilt for our first Serie A season, although I was using our newfound reputation in the top league to try to hoover up some of the better youngsters. These included:

Alessandro Sarti £2 million GK 18
Ivan Vanni £525k DRLC 18
Eloy Gomez £3.9 million AMLC/FC 18
Davide Monti £1.25 million MC 17
Ivan Gallego Free ST 18
Joachim Cudini £600k MC 17
Alejandro Cruz Free D/ WB RL 18
Fernando Altuna £60k DC/DM/MC 17
Jorge £1.5 million DC 16
David Izaola £675k AMLC 18
Inaki Merino £450k DR 16

Other big signings were Lithuanian Captain Giedrius Kudzinskas, an AMRLC, from Porto for £4.8 million and Harry Forrester, an AMR, for £3.9 million from Aberdeen.

Moving out of the club, mostly to free up wages and transfer funds, were

Mirko Ferraris £160k
Salvador Robles £5.5 million
Benito £5.25 million
Isaiah Osbourne £85k
David Aranda £3.3 million
German £1 million
Luca Libertino £1 million
Thomas Weiner £600k

This left a transfer deficit of over £2 million and I was 22k over wage budget, counting on a decent league finish and the TV money to save us.

Only 1 result in August, from the Coppa Italia-

San Marino 2-1 Sambenedettese (TIM 3rd Qual)

A Carlo Antonelli double saw us 2-0 up, but Sambenedettese pulled one back on 86 minutes, we held on to see us through to the 4th qualifying round

2022/2023- Serie A September

This month was the one the league kicked in, and it was 2 difficult games to start off with, away to Inter and at home to the Old Lady, Juventus. Then followed 2 games against Torino, one in the Cup 4th Qualifier and once in the league, we finished the month with a midweek home game to Fiorentina, as former parent met former feeder at Olimpico.

Here is the team for our first Serie A game at the San Siro, mostly the same that finished the Serie B season, but with 3 new faces in midfield.

Inter 1-1 San Marino Antonelli misses penalty, Kudzinskas gets a debut goal but Inter equalise 4 minutes later
San Marino 1-1 Juventus Graziano scores just before half time, Juventus equalise and hang on despite red card
San Marino 1-2 Torino (TIM 4th Qual) Ruben Cruz scores but 2 goals either side of ½ time put us out of the cup
Torino 1-2 San Marino Payback for the cup, Sabatini gives Torino the lead, Graziano equalises and an O.G- first win in Serie A
San Marino 2-0 Fiorentina Graziano and Zurro give us a 2-0 lead before the break which we hold on to

2022/2023- Serie A October

Another month past, and 4 more games to tell you about as we continued to accumulate points that took us closer to our target of 40 points to avoid relegation

Catania 0-1 San Marino Antonelli scores on 50 minutes
San Marino 2-2 Atalanta Graziano scores, Atalanta score twice before half time, O.G gives us a draw
San Marino 2-1 Cavese Graziano scores, Cavese equalise on 53, Antonelli scores late winner
Cagliari 2-1 San Marino Unbeaten run ends after Capecchi equalised but Cagliari score the winner on 74

The unbeaten run ended after 8 games, but we are firmly in the top half of the table, keeping pace with continental qualification, with nearly a quarter of the season gone and we are nearly half way to our target.

You can do it with 2 managers, or wait for Mazza to resign/retire/get sacked, or get Mazza sacked by adding a new user and applying for the job. Mostly you want to be in the club job first though to get some better player for the national team

2022/2023- Serie A November

Parma 2-0 San Marino 2 quick goals before ½ time, 2 defeats in a row
San Marino 5-0 Udinese 2 from Antonelli, one each from Graziano, Zurro and Paoloni smash 9 man Udinese
Ascoli 2-1 San Marino 2-0 down before half time, Graziano pulls one back but Ascoli hold on
San Marino 1-1 Genoa Antonelli equalises with a perfect lob on 56
Napoli 5-2 San Marino 3-1 down at half time after Graziano pulled one back, Napoli score twice, Antonelli gets our second

A fairly average month really, a couple of big results but we’re starting to slowly slide down the table, now in 8th after 13 games

2022/2023- Serie A December

San Marino 1-1 Roma Antonelli with a late equaliser, his 75th for Titani
Frosinone 1-2 San Marino Antonelli & Pareja put us 2 up, Frosinone scored in injury time
San Marino 1-1 Bologna Graziano scored early on, O.G equaliser

We are now in 7th in the league. It was a little disappointing to end the year with an own goal but I am very happy with our league position going into the break.

This month the youth facilities were upgraded, we now have State of the Art facilities with an Academy.

Started Serie B, knocked out in 3rd Quailfying round Cantania (Serie A) after leading 1-0 for most of the match.

Won first game of season away 0-1 against Chievo, was 1-16 underdogs and played really well giving them no shots in first half, second half they came back strong but the defense held up nicely.

Have a severe problem in 2nd game, all my 1st team strikers injured, 4 players on international duty from 1st team, 8 from under 20s, so leaves me with 1 16 yr old keeper who is very carp.

Other problem is U20s just played a game so those I can choose are knackered!

Going to be a long hard season at this rate ;)

Gratz Korb on youth facilities, should be a great help for national team later on. Board are annoyed at me for keep asking for improvements, saying were skint, even though have 1.5 mil in the bank :(

Well done on the back to back promotions, I really struggled to get out of Serie C1, I think it's the type of league where if you don't get out quickly you struggle. Now onto my January update for 2022/2023 in Serie A.

Lecce 3-2 San Marino Lecce went 3-0 up quickly, Graziano pulled 2 back but we couldn't score the equaliser
San Marino 1-1 Palermo Oxtero's first goal, 94th minute equaliser
San Marino 1-2 AC Milan Kudzinskas after 25 seconds, 2 late goals mean a defeat against leaders

Disappointing to lose against Milan, but we have also slipped to 11th, still a fair way clear of the bottom 3 however

2022/2023- Serie A February

Not a fantastic month, which didn't start easily with games against Inter and Juventus, before getting a little easier towards the end.

San Marino 1-3 Inter 2-0 down after 8, 2-1 at 1/2 time (Graziano), 3rd for Inter in injury time
Juventus 5-3 San Marino 2 late goals flatter us somewhat, 5-1 down before Kudzinskas and Graziano give us some respectability back
San Marino 1-3 Torino 3-0 down after 52, Graziano continues his good form by scoring a consolation
Fiorentina 1-1 San Marino Winless run continues, Antonelli equalises after a first half penalty
Atalanta 1-3 San Marino Halleluja! Forrester scores his first goal for Titani, Graziano and Oxtero seal our first win in 9

We were slipping towards the relegation zone and morale had plummeted, but the win over Atalanta gave us a 9 point cushion and improved morale no end. We are now 14th and hopefully we can push on to the top half or maintain our position for the last 14 games

2022/2023 Serie A March

San Marino 1-3 Catania 2-0 down, Graziano pulls one back on 88 but they score again in the 93rd
San Marino 2-1 Parma Graziano double, Parma get a goal back but have a man sent off and can't equalise
Cavese 0-2 San Marino Big win against 18th, O.G and Antonelli pull us 13 clear
San Marino 1-1 Cagliari 5th draw in a row for Cagliari after Kudzinskas put us ahead

A decent month which saw us move further away from the relegation zone with wins over 17th place Parma and 18th placed Cavese. After the month is out we are 13th, 16 clear of the relegation zone on 36 points with 10 games left. Hopefully a couple more points should see us safe, although a top half finish is not out of the question, and we are only 6 points from UEFA qualification. Fair play league could also come into play as we have picked up only 11 bookings all season and no reds, the lowest in the league.

Just started this challenge, won 4 out of 4 in the league so far. Signed a load of players from Murata and a few other San Marrinese clubs because they were all on amateur contracts and are bloody excellent for this level. Manuel Marani, Nicola Albani, Damiano Vannucci and Simone Bacciocchi are the pick of these signings. Another standout signing is Mascio from Cisco Roma for 45k, exceptional central midfielder and is dominating this division. He's also only 17 and has the potential to be a Serie A player in the future. My strike force at the moment consists of a Slovenian in Josip Spelic signed for 10k and Antonio Mihaylov on loan from A.C. Milan, they're banging in the goals between them.

I only sold 6 players so the squad is bulging a bit at the moment and my wage budget is over by 2k, will clear out more players in January but tbh I don't care about the wage budget too much if I'm winning every week!

I would be a bit careful with wages myself in that league m8, you get hardly any revenue and 2nd half of the season your money will plummet, mainly because of the huge amount of U20s at start. Good Luck with the game.

Chievo 0-1 San Marino Dominated the game without actually doing anything in the final 1/3rd, scored just before half time, Chievo had player sent off on 75 mins, dull game.

San Marino 1-1 Livorno Was lucky to get a draw here, only 3 shots per side total in game. They scored in 73 minute, we missed a penalty in 76th minute and managed to squeek an equaliser in 89th minute.

Salernitana 1-2 San Marino Managed to score before and after half time, they came back strong after 60 minutes and piled on the shots. Defence held up pretty well, They scored from a freak goal.

San Marino 1-0 Parma Parma have £30m+ squad but they didn't play well at all, We dominated first half and scored on 16 minutes. 2nd half Parma came back a little, but held on easily.

Empoli 0-1 San Marino Tough battle this, 11 yellow cards combined, they missed a penalty on 7 minutes, but scored on 8m after long throw from penalty clearance. Never really got going after that and deserved to lose.

San Marino 3-0 Benevento Easy win, if my strikers were more ruthless could easily have been 5 or 6. 22nd team in League with 1 point.

San Marino 1-0 Cesena Another boring win, not many shots and both midfields struggled to do anything. Switch to wing play, one winger crossed for other winger to nod it in. Was lucky win.

Defense is still my greatest strength, all my defense have 7.5+ stats atm which I am rather surprised at because they are all 18-20 yr olds. Hoping the pressure won't tell to much after a ot of games. Striker havent scored much again this season although all of them have been injured at some point. Midfield are very hit and miss aswell, even though these are the most expierence age wise. ! great game followed by a complete dud is the norm for them atm.

Cleared out another load of youngsters that I couldn't sell.

Yes, I'm starting to get worried about it. I'm selling a few more players in January and trying to offload youngsters, although it's basically impossible to get rid of them because they're all rubbish!

On the plus side I'm still going strong in the league, played 14 games, won 11, drawn 2 and lost 1. Along with this I'm the only C2 team left in the Serie C Cup, although I'm about to go out in the 2nd group stage.

What division do I have to get to before I'm allowed my 1 non-EU player a season? Also, when does Mazza usually get sacked/leave from the national team?

Serie C1 I think, can't really remember. Mazza has to retire I think, although I did get sacked from the national team on my first attempt (abandoned it after bugger all progress), so he might be sacked. The alternative is to create a new user and then retiring it to open up the job.

Slight problem and dilemma here, my game failed to load and the backup is from just before the Cavese game. Should I try and replicate the same results or just play through normally?

Would just play as if it was a load from the day before, it aint your fault so silly trying to replicate it.

Gratz on promotion Swelly, how are your finances?

200k in debt, not good at all. Hoping these financial problems don't ruin my push. Board seem to be ignoring it for the moment, they haven't complained and have given me a 3 year contract extension. Got any ideas on how I can make extra money?

I basically just use a small squad and get rid of the crap either sell, free or terminate. 2nd season was basically stalemate, all income got spent by end of season, so were no better or worse off. Finished Season with about 100k in bank. Since in Serie B moneys become easier and up to £1.6m in the bank.

I always try run 25% under wage budget if I can, but that's just my style. Small squads backed up by youngsters, though with these stupid internationals being played same day as league matches, that isn't a great idea.

Another piece of advice is to not get too sentimental, if you can get a good price for your best players, sell them and replace them for cheaper, I ended up with around a £9 million transfer budget in Serie C1 that way by just selling off players.

I also finished the season, luckily I didn't get relegated as I had avoided it when the game crashed last time, so here are the results for the rest of season 2022/2023:

Cavese 1-1 San Marino Graziano scores just before 1/2 time, late late equaliser for Cavese
San Marino 1-1 Cagliari Graziano again, Cagliari equalise after 64
Udinese 3-2 San Marino A loss to 20th place, Graziano and Forrester for us, Udinese score the winner after 56
San Marino 1-1 Ascoli Antonelli scores after 4, Ascoli equalise on 36
Genoa 5-3 San Marino 2-0 down, Otero makes it 2-1, 4-1 at 1/2 time, Pareja at both ends for 5-2 Forrester scores our 3rd
San Marino 0-0 Napoli A draw with the 2nd placed team, not bad
Bologna 1-2 San Marino Graziano scores early on, Bologna equalise but Capecchi scores an injury time winner
Roma 1-1 San Marino Leading through Graziano till a shot hits the post and goes in off GK Velez on 82
San Marino 3-1 Frosinone Pareja on 8, Antonelli misses penalty but scores rebound and gets another, Frosinone pull back on 43
San Marino 4-3 Lecce 3-0 down after 15, debutant Gallego scores two, Capecchi scores free kick and Graziano scores winner
Palermo 2-1 San Marino Loss at 4th place, 1-0 up through Graziano but two goals in 3 minutes see us lose
AC Milan 2-0 San Marino Runaway winners beat us, 1-0 till injury time and they score on the counter

Not a bad end to the season, as we finished in 11th and as you can see from the picture, we qualified for Europe through the fair play league as Italy were drawn as one of the two extra place countries. Graziano finished top scorer in Serie A with 25, and Antonelli came 3rd in young player of the year. Graziano was also named in team of the year.

Update on San Marino's maiden voyage the UEFA Cup:

1st Qualifying Round Vs Avenir Beggen

1st Leg: San Marino 6-0 Avenir Beggen

Graziano scores 4 and Otero (Now classed as a wonderkid \o/) gets another 2 to almost secure our passage to the next round

2nd Leg: Avenir Beggen 0-4 San Marino

A very youthful San Marino side easily see off 10 man Avenir, and get the agregate score into double figures. Gallego, Ruben Cruz, Izaola and Gomez give us the win with 4 goals in 10 minutes.

Graziano has also broken his own record for goals in a season, and Forrester now holds the record for most assists in a season.
