The Dreaded Awful Challenge Animation Sequence

Recommended Posts

The two violent acts that are included in this game are The Elbow and The Violent, Two-Feet Tackle. The first you often see as a player walking towards the referee, then being shown a red card, or an unexplained penalty after a free kick or corner. The second you see as a player suddenly whacking down a player with both feet, for no apparent reason, and usually in the middle of the field.

What is important to understand regarding these so-called "violent tackles" is that they aren't really tackles. Tactical settings, team talks and visible attributes have very little to do with when these situtations occur and who does them - they are not caused by anything we managers do. They are acts of violence caused by the hidden attributes Sportsmanship and Temperament, and a random factor easily recognized as "poor team form". They usually come in batches where you will have at least one such incident happen every third match and alarmingly often every match, and since it is difficult to get results with one man less on the field the poor form often stays for a while.

In real life there is a much wider variety of violence on the pitch, like kicks or punches, but these aren't in the game. Think of the "two-feet violent tackle" being an uncontroversial representative of these acts, rather than an actual tackle involving attributes like Aggression and Tackling.

This explains why, when this happens, the player won't get away with a yellow or a talking-to. It isn't a tackle leading to a red card - it is a red card with an uncontroversial animation sequence representing a player completely losing it.

If you explore the commentary file of the game you will see other such 'incidents' like Mass brawl between the two teams and 'Player 1 has punched the ref square in the nose'

Although these arn't coded into the game ;-)

IIRC those commentary lines are leftovers from old versions, before SEGA/SI became afraid of lawsuits [still don't get why someone should sue about an in-game brawl and not about a "regular" red card, a missed penalty or a dreadful season].

Indeed we need more variety and more controversy with red cards... When one of your players is sent off, there's a 99.9% chance he actually deserved it. No reason to appeal or to complain about the ref after the game...

As soon as I see a two-footed challenge, I know it's going to be a red. There should be more variety in violence, I'd like SI to make a use of commentary lines mentioned by Urzzz.

Might interest you to know that they're present and used in FMH (ie. they're not blocked for legal reasons).

Have you ever had legal problems because of some violent conduct that happened in game?
