Champions League Knockout Draw

We managed to win all 6 games in the group :)

And now for the draw for the knockout stage. Here are the teams we might face:

20200826015053_1.thumb.jpg.cc4485a556b743e7b442269908329ba3.jpg

We can't have Ajax (same group), Man U or Spuds so that leaves Porto, Schalke, Dortmund, Lazio and Napoli.
I'd prefer Porto or Schalke tbh but I'll take any of those and fancy our chances over two legs.
We've ended up with Porto 😏

In the league, we are drawing far too many games. Just can't seem to get going tbh and a European place is by no means certain this season if we can't sort this out.

Meanwhile, our youth intake preview is back to its usual crapiness 🙄😟

World Cup Finals Draw

We are 2nd seeds and are in a group with Zambia. The 1st seeds are halfway through. I have a bad feeling we are going to end up with Brazil or Argentina :(

20200826031940_1.thumb.jpg.50d3caa9e3e023dd365a02d8105f5822.jpg ... yup 🙄20200826032207_1.thumb.jpg.96b48032ef2b0be3c381bc8bb38468a0.jpg

But the top two qualify so we just have to make sure we beat the Africans

Cup woes continue 🙄

We drew 0-0 at League One side Sunderland despite totally dominating
20200826224649_1.thumb.jpg.a3e65a8cda6d177549212c76bddedcc2.jpg

In the replay it was the same story and we needed an injury time equaliser to stay in with a chance
20200826222652_1.thumb.jpg.73d2855fa7213397655e18f888403646.jpg I thought we'd won it with the last kick of the game 20200826222715_1.thumb.jpg.b6b7165e80ef89aead6d84c84a32560a.jpg

But it was ruled offside and so it went to penalties where Sunderland all of a sudden turned into set piece masters, not missing any of their 7.
Unfortunately, we missed our 7th and that was that. Out of the cup early on yet again for another season
20200826224059_1.thumb.jpg.ccf35d9c4bd2f619ee16b11ef83eed56.jpg

It's not just the cup where we've been struggling recently. Plenty of games against lesser opposition going to waste, like here:

20200826225221_1.thumb.jpg.edd90627c506843439a810c07c3aa500.jpg

and here

Doing my head in tbh but I have (yet another) new formation to try out at home. I've used it 3 times (442 Diamond) so far with decent results:

We lost 1-0 in Portugal but will hopefully gain revenge in the home leg next week.
In the league, our form has improved and we are up into 3rd, still some way behind leaders Chelsea though
20200827012223_1.thumb.jpg.3e73be63b4ec5129f5d2383d7f122dd4.jpg

I've decided to use our away tactic at home too and it's done pretty well so far

GOOOOALLLLLLAAAAZZZZiiiOOOOOOO

Well, that was the planned headline if we got Lazio in the QF of the Champions League. It wasn't quite to be but first the 2nd leg v Porto and it was a tense affair.
1-0 down from the away leg, we took the lead at home to square it all up at 1-1. No more goals in the 90min though so into extra time it went.
Just 2min in and we scored our 2nd of the game and at that point I switched tactic to be a little more defensive as an away goal right now for Porto would see them through.
Turns out it was a good decision :)
20200827225826_1.thumb.jpg.a45a966bb26e156f6a8e326d8d144115.jpg

The eight teams left in are 20200828004453_1.thumb.jpg.03443b8a1068eff79e343d2adeb6a873.jpg and we are the sole English representatives remaining, which gives me a little bit of extra pride.

Looking at the other teams left in, I think there's little doubt I'd want us to play Lazio. The others are mahoosive clubs: Bayern, Juve, PSG, Dortmund, Barca and Real.
We were drawn first out of the hat so would have to play at home in the 1st leg and luck wasn't with us as we ended up with Barcelona :(

20200828004553_1.thumb.jpg.4039f16a02d594e0bce1294d24dfc221.jpg

20200828004602_1.thumb.jpg.1b0ab3e5e8ca0f5c9b0d9fa246eb5475.jpg

Should we get past them somehow, we'll play Lazio or PSG in the semis. We are going to need a lot of luck to reach that stage though.

With 7 games to go, we are in a good position to make the top four but we can't really afford to drop many points as, apart from Chelsea who have run away with the league, it's very tight in the top six.
20200831005804_1.thumb.jpg.6123aca4bd55f722f8ac11e46627ddc7.jpg and back to back wins puts us 3rd 20200831022320_1.thumb.jpg.aa45e7c4a6a262f88b1c1208d7be692e.jpg

But a late equaliser for Newcastle dents our top four hopes
20200831023421_1.thumb.jpg.23fff1a48fa32251e2bac64caa59a97d.jpg followed by a 1-0 defeat at Spuds :( 20200831025652_1.thumb.jpg.93916bbde96a4b1906dc85ffe1137db6.jpg

That loss means we drop to 5th but do have a game in hand on most.
Our final three games are Fulham (away, 18th), Leicester (away, 6th) and Wolves (home 19th).
Win all three and we make the CL but it's not going to be easy.

As expected, Barca proved too strong for us. They won 2-1 at our place 20200831014452_1.thumb.jpg.48e1521adf5d02d7863f3daad7712622.jpg

and, chasing the game, we conceded late in Spain to seal our exit

Ah well, maybe next year.
Still, our current crop are doing well which makes a nice change...

Dunno how they manage to do that. That's twice or maybe three times that's happened to us now and we've never pinched a player from another club's youth system.

Thinking ahead to next season already, I've had my eye on this striker for a while now

I turned down a job interview with Man City 20200831023549_1.thumb.jpg.cd97cc2d67c4a972f73075ec361ab872.jpg

20200831023619_1.thumb.jpg.67c260015fa0fa22ccaa329fcac327bc.jpg and good success on the pitch means we are ahead of schedule

The draw for the Nations League has happened. I was hoping to be in Group 3 with Denmark, Ireland and Russia but we ended up with a much tougher group...

20200831133520_1.thumb.jpg.a44e2a200207715bfa1c283bb84a324c.jpg Great but it's not my main priority 20200831133540_1.thumb.jpg.2a67788549e1bc1a1f4a91f6ad78c31a.jpg

A 3-0 win at Fulham pushes us up to 4th but Liverpool and possibly even Leicester, who we travel to in our penultimate match, could take our CL spot
20200831144217_1.thumb.jpg.633cdbe69fc175a6e10cc73c8c37fc8e.jpg Leicester win their game in hand too 20200831145344_1.thumb.jpg.3218006a35a44488012e75b38eea0ab4.jpg

But our boys performed when it mattered and we came away from the King Power stadium with all three points :)
20200831152039_1.thumb.jpg.8cf833c5e7bd332f341edf85514d9adb.jpg20200831152100_1.thumb.jpg.2ef1a0ec30cff2ba3fde281b31f62c90.jpg

So we know that just a draw at home to already relegated Wolves will be enough to finish in the top four.
As always, we will be going for the win and that would see us end up 2nd behind Chelsea.
Some different viewing options of the table going into the final weekend...
20200831152938_1.thumb.jpg.a8c878719c15698628fef517425fa408.jpg20200831153346_1.thumb.jpg.ad7d5662f04096abd1830b26b600182d.jpg20200831154002_1.thumb.jpg.9b6dab220e22db917697ef1aa2377ac3.jpg

And the pre-season prediction is not a pretty sight for Arsenal and especially Man City supporters

An early injury to winger Russo means Almada comes in to play a slightly unfamiliar RM role.
Jobson has also taken a knock but it's just a bruised shin so I leave him out there.
This turns out to be a really good decision as, after the GK parried a shot by Howells, the Brazilian AM is there to tap in the rebound for his 10th goal of an impressive season

Even better when, a minute later, Liverpool go behind at Chelsea. Things are looking good :)

30min gone and, although Liverpool equalised, Chelsea went down the other end and the mercurial Ansu Fati restored their lead.
Spuds drawing 0-0 at Arsenal and Liverpool drop out of the top four as we approach half time

Edited by Earnie is God!

  • At the start of the 2nd half, Spuds go 1-0 up but none of that matters if we can hold onto the lead here
  • On 66min, it's all kicking off in North London as Marcos Antonio sees red and Spuds are down to 10 men. Can Arsenal take advantage?
  • Fati scores his 2nd and Chelsea's 3rd meaning Liverpool are set to miss out on a CL place altogether
  • WBA currently holding onto that 4th spot, 1pt ahead of the Anfield club
  • But wait, what's this? Deep into injury time, The Reds claw a goal back to trail 3-2 at Chelsea. One more goal will push them ahead of WBA on goal difference
  • I've taken a cautious approach for the last 10min in our game which is still 1-0 and Wolves have just gone down to 10 men after a 2nd yellow for Bentancur
  • And in the 95th minute, Geistmaster doubles our lead and secures 2nd spot :brock:

So how did it all finish?
20200831163204_1.thumb.jpg.03303eca0b6e9d3d4ea8e15efaeacd3a.jpg20200831163238_1.thumb.jpg.eba359417e9557e571177be3873f2344.jpg

In spite of a 3-0 tonking at Soton, WBA finish 4th as Liverpool went down 3-2 to Chelsea.
Spuds held on at Arsenal to finish 3rd.
But I'll take 2nd any day, especially as Chelsea were pretty unstoppable this season.

Fortunately, Jobson's injury isn't serious and he's in real contention for a call-up to the Brazil squad for the upcoming World Cup

20200831163846_1.thumb.jpg.c689535dd3fb8629c7b7820d1bbcce33.jpg

Sadly, Russo wasn't so lucky as he's out for up to four months. The 21yo was just getting into his stride and had an outside chance of making Gattuso's WC squad but not any more.

Some big money on offer from the board should I feel the need, although we had loads this season but didn't spend it. Perhaps I should this summer though

Season 2033/34 Review

Another successful campaign has seen us finish 2nd and qualify for the Champions League.
Still some major disappointments in the cup competitions, especially domestically, so we'll have to try and put that right in the next few years.
20200831173431_1.thumb.jpg.74b75fbe13abe7524d28f3184cfc825f.jpg

No surprise that the Geistmeister won Fans' PoTS, he's been one of my best signings to date.

20200831164841_1.thumb.jpg.7bca07e2d49ea8a3c82de34eb62020c9.jpg20200831164820_1.thumb.jpg.f6e9276196e684b5096c7e65b985b8cc.jpg20200831164847_1.thumb.jpg.44be94bbe7da218f25ff76a6b18375eb.jpg

Board expectations seemed pretty reasonable so I accepted without too much thought.
I did notice afterwards that they'd prefer new signings to commit to at least four year contracts and I'm not sure that's going to happen but the board didn't see that as a major thing so we should be OK

20200831173501_1.thumb.jpg.d845a2d1593728d03769a32c2436140e.jpg
20200831173510_1.thumb.jpg.927789f79855da9b31148245bd5b34b4.jpg

Injuries weren't too bad this season, mainly youth players in development that we perhaps push a little too hard at times 20200831173537_1.thumb.jpg.e7bbc649a6180a09b321f7b91f9509a7.jpg

We made the most profit from transfers again but I think it's time I invested heavily in the squad so we can challenge on all fronts in the next few seasons.
I mean who knows if and when the board decide to take away that £550m transfer kitty? Especially if I'm not using it.

World Cup 2034

Unbeaten since I took charge, the World Cup is just around the corner and I've named my 30-man preliminary squad.
Not many names people will be familiar with due to the year and all the newgens but there are still some around e.g. Neco Williams, Ethan Ampadu and Chris Mepham.
Ampadu's our captain with Mepham 2nd in command. Ethan's 33yo but still good enough and might be for a season or two yet.
However, Mepham is 36 and on his way out. I was advised by my AssMan to have a chat with a few players; one a youngster and the other two more senior.
Two responded well to the talk but this was Mepham's reaction:
20200831181743_1.thumb.jpg.5b5cf6a33845068b02961dd2a87b5e41.jpg Mate, your legs are gone! 20200831181758_1.thumb.jpg.1dd38275e6504e1e11011d60a5bdd2da.jpg

The only reason I've taken him to this tournament is because he's vice captain. Can't see him playing too much tbh except to give a rest to my starting CBs.

Anyway, we have friendlies coming up against Honduras and Brazil before taking on Argentina and Zambia in the WC.
Mepham's going to play v Honduras and we'll see just how bad and slow he is.

Link to post

Mepham scored v Honduras in a 2-0 win but we then came unstuck v Brazil as they beat us 2-0, our first defeat since I took the reins.
We certainly have our limitations going into the tournament but we'll give it our best.

Argentina first up for us and it was a very tight game, 0-0 until the 78th minute when star striker Ryan McKenzie, who has just signed for us, headed in to give us the win!
20200831225051_1.thumb.jpg.e09a30c3a2788e7aa437a967a2dc8170.jpg20200831225440_1.thumb.jpg.58d206ff8e6143cab7dbf77c9ef71f92.jpg
We had four players booked and, right up to the semi final stage, players are suspended for one game if they are booked in two matches.
So, with that in mind, I decided to rest 'the yellow four' for the 2nd group game against Zambia.
In theory this should be easy for us but you can never take anything for granted.
As it turns out, I needn't have been concerned as we ran out 5-0 winners :)
20200831235831_1.thumb.jpg.b005700f394a777dc5555fa46b71438a.jpg

McKenzie scored his 2nd and 3rd of the tournament and that puts him one behind Horoi for France in the race for the Golden Boot.
More importantly, we have qualified for the 2nd round!
20200901000211_1.thumb.jpg.530cc5cb73cc343480160b953659dd86.jpg and we will play the team who finish 2nd in Group G 20200901000226_1.thumb.jpg.3d05d5c9a3929ac851cca17c4c318403.jpg

That group is England's group but thankfully they've already qualified in 1st place so we'll be up against either Canada, who England beat 4-0, or Uruguay who were trounced 6-0!
If Canada can get at least a draw v the South Americans then they will qualify to face us.

Either way, I'm delighted to have made it through and we now have 7 days off to prepare for it :D

Uruguay beat Canada 3-0 and we'll have to keep an eye on this guy when we play them as he scored a hat-trick.

Our players are well rested though so I'm hoping we can take advantage of Uruguay's short 3-day rest.
If we come through that game, we'll play France in the 3rd round apparently, even though they've yet to play Morocco in the 2nd round.

Dodgy FM instead perhaps as France did come through against Morocco and we'll play them if we can get past Uruguay.
In that game, we were the better side in the first half but it was scoreless at HT.
However, early in the 2nd half we went into the lead when record appearance maker Ethan Ampadu got his head on the end of a corner

Uruguay equalised in a close offside situation midway through the 2nd half but, with just 6min to go, McKenzie bagged his 4th of the tournament to give us a well deserved win :)

France coming up in 4 days' time and I suspect our tournament ends here but we'll see.

Feathers three and fleur-de-lis

No, WRU doesn't stand for the Welsh Rugby Union team, it means "We R Ungry" for some French flesh. Honest, guv'nor 🤫

Anywho, swiftly moving on... our big day is here, Wales v France at the World Cup, with Germany waiting in the QF.
France look pretty special and still have the likes of Mbappe, Aouar and Todibo in their ranks
About a gazillion areas of strength 20200901174729_1.thumb.jpg.a405730588261bf87391e54f0b6d90d7.jpg    and just four minor weaknesses

One of those weaknesses though seems to be that "they don't like it up 'em" so our typically aggressive style might at least ruffle some of their fake French feathers.
In the other 3rd round match today, England lost on penalties (shock, horror!) to Portugal (again) after having their star man sent off (Rooney deja vu?)
20200901181641_1.thumb.jpg.ec4d7f7962de0f3df8f61add90b65da1.jpg

We created nothing in the first half and were holding on at times at 0-0 but a rallying cry just before HT seemed to do the trick...
20200901182308_1.thumb.jpg.1af63672c8b5bd697055e760b1ac7b64.jpg20200901182309_2.thumb.jpg.73e220ff45a2cfba3acd466e26312eaa.jpg20200901182311_1.thumb.jpg.d215bb68691edded0ef3ff628e92eeb6.jpg

A slender 1-0 lead, McKenzie with his 5th goal of the Finals

20200901182324_1.thumb.jpg.33e96bafa84c1c9bf50580907060be78.jpg

I knew they'd be bombarding us in the 2nd half but they'd not threatened us too much in the first 45 so we stuck to our guns and tried to grind them out.
But the fouls were totting up and they would surely make the most of one of these free kicks soon.
A breakaway down the left and subsequent cross was unluckily deflected into the path of French striker Alanis who had a tap-in :(
20200901182706_1.thumb.jpg.a000cba7c7285b1dd622b21eb832f5a3.jpg20200901182706_2.thumb.jpg.dd21a294b0d37f2bb7a7931ccbfbb74c.jpg20200901182707_2.thumb.jpg.19892fd8885a4f97fb701f92b5c137c7.jpg

And that's how it remained until the end of 90min
20200901182918_1.thumb.jpg.728d1717082867a9f915f43323156b89.jpg

Fresh legs were brought on and we survived the first period of extra time but, as so often happens in FM, a goal at the start of a half put us on the back foot.
A throw in and quick passing play saw Cisse in acres of space inside the area and he made no mistake
20200901183208_1.thumb.jpg.ffd92d7b5d42dac8f283094942dc0331.jpg20200901183210_1.thumb.jpg.b6d36fc910c736a0114bc6a8e062a804.jpg20200901183210_2.thumb.jpg.2bc9d4d071b610b4852cde2a83c2d293.jpg

As I was contemplating whether it was too early to go for broke or not, we gave away yet another free kick and this time we didn't escape
20200901183406_1.thumb.jpg.feeec8fc2c71c740df6ce70f408ea0fe.jpg20200901183409_1.thumb.jpg.0939fdba993d39aaab8f2b4c3e834603.jpg20200901183411_1.thumb.jpg.0b3c559e3cd63714305576e2181d8a58.jpg

3-1 down with 10min to go and nothing to lose, it was time to go all-out attack.
We left it very late, too late as it happens, but we did pull one back at the death and it was that man McKenzie again as he pounced on a rebound after great work by young strike partner MacCarter

McKenzie with a brilliant 6 goals to his name; currently joint top scorer but ze Germans are the strongest side at these Finals and I expect Badalyan (also 6 goals) or Voloshynskyi (5) to win the Golden Boot.
They are unbelievable strikers at Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively

Our WC story might be over but I'm very proud of the boys.
We have a very good spine to build on: Jones in goal, Webber and Owen at CB, Ampadu DM, Jack Jones CM and McKenzie up front but the rest of the side is League One standard tbh.
But only Ampadu is nearing the end of his career so we have something to work with, that's for sure.
Onwards and upwards :)
Now back to club football with Dronfield and spending big for once!

How The Mighty Have Fallen

With Man City finishing a lowly 14th this season, they are having a mass clearout as most of the squad wants to be playing in Europe.
As expected, nothing strange there. What is a bit strange, however, is that they are chasing my 3rd choice and largely forgotten GK
20200901020700_1.thumb.jpg.2bb889667aff0fae298aa1958e03ce50.jpg

As you can see, he's pretty bad and has hardly played for us for years.
20200901020714_1.thumb.jpg.909c8c54c0b394583015efb5892b6954.jpg20200901020711_1.thumb.jpg.c3c67068fdae73771c250c1be990d8ba.jpg

I was going to release him but will happily take City's money, no matter how little.
I don't get why they want him. Yes, he's English but they aren't playing in Europe so don't need the home grown players. Weird

Final round-up and new fixtures...

Nicely moving up the European rankings, reputation on the rise, attendances up, sponsorship up, all looking good.
And then the bar stewards from Manc-land come and pinch a completely unknown youthie from us 🤬
And why do we never do that to other clubs ourselves? Not happy.
Anyway, opening fixtures are a bit tougher than we've had recently but perhaps it's about time as we've been lucky up until now

Pre-season has gone well but we all know that means very little when it comes to the real thing.
But, after our opening friendly where we won 4-3 but conceded stupid goals, I've generally been impressed with our defending.
Add to that, going forward we are looking great.
20200902045629_1.thumb.jpg.352b5615338081eb7b1f9d92439fd9b5.jpg
New main formation for this season is something I've never really tried before. Will be interesting to see how well it works.
20200902045513_1.thumb.jpg.4ed5b8b19b844441dcd2d389ab6838a8.jpg For tougher matches, I'll drop some players deeper like this 20200902045532_1.thumb.jpg.02b71365af26a2d4fcf650a5777aef92.jpg

Basically, we have so many options in the centre of the park and have had for many years now. I've never really figured out how to fit them all in.
Add to that, we've struggled to bring in quality wingers so this seems like a decent plan for a formation.
I can always fall back on this one from last season if things aren't going well

We are predicted to finish 6th this season which seems about right, although I'm targeting a top four finish and will be disappointed if we don't make the CL spots
20200902042451_1.thumb.jpg.cbcf3ce5a7d8163ba833a602e10182c0.jpg

20200902045706_1.thumb.jpg.646e434994cc5b6d039b4a1fd1021cf8.jpg he's also unhappy as Liverpool failed to qualify for the CL so I declare our interest :)

Liverpool don't want to sell, especially after only buying him last season for a whopping £99m, but we'll do our best to bring him in.
So far, they have turned us down flat on numerous offers, gradually rising to £127m. We may have to turn elsewhere if we can't get him soon.
20200902053255_1.thumb.jpg.02604614ec0462dc453cd3d70a2ac6be.jpg
We might have spent £170m+ on two players but we've also been busy selling off assets, players who do not really fit into my new tactic. So actually, we are in profit yet again on the transfer front right now

The season hasn't started too well. We drew 0-0 at home to Everton despite dominating and also missing a penalty.
We then lost 1-0 at WBA to continue our poor record against them but switching to the more conservative formation I posted earlier did give us quite a few chances so will probably use that for all away games.
Especially when, after being under the cosh at Man City in our next game, switching to it again gave us two late goals and a 2-0 win :)

Liverpool at home next and I'll start with that formation and see how we do

Not quite sure who those 22 players are but some of them will be ones we wanted to sell but most will probably be players who moved on from us to bigger and better things.
Shame there isn't a link there to show these players but never mind [edit: figured later that if you hover over it, it gives you the players, like this one below]

With Wales, it's been steady but we were never likely to top a Nations League group containing both England and Germany.
We drew with England but were beaten both home and away by the Germs

You'd struggle to guess with this history... 20200906230243_1a.jpg.1424dd8fdb45661bfab850dd1cd09d22.jpg Yup, that's right, he's the England manager! 🤷‍♂️ 20200906230318_1.jpg.8724891ee8d187bb4b31a9a3f9096c24.jpg

Of course he is, it's Leigh Downing

We lost 2-0 in England but then went to Albania and came away with an impressive 3-0 win, totally dominating.
So we will be in League A with the big boys again next time and see if we can build on what we've done so far.

The U21s have been doing well too and have qualified for the U21 Championships :)

The draw for the Euro qualifying groups is being done. As we have done very well in recent times, we are one of the 1st seeds and we'll end up in one of these groups...

There isn't really a group there that either really easy or really difficult so I'm not too bothered which one we end up in.
And we have been pulled out of the hat and put into Group F

Slip Sliding Away

Numerous games have fallen by the wayside recently. We've created umpteen chances in most of them yet can't seem to stick the ball in the net.
And this has cost us as twice we threw away a lead against Man U when we were 3rd and they were 2nd.
And in our last game v Spuds, we totally dominated but couldn't score.
Our chances of the title are slipping away and we might not even get a top four spot at this rate

On the plus side, Murray's now our all-time top scorer.
Just 91 goals though so I doubt that will last for too long

We won our CL group and awaiting the draw for the knockout stages. Solid wins over Leipzig and Galatossers ensured a comfortable passage through, our kids outplaying the Turks in the final group game

Looks like another year will go by without much in the way of a youth intake although who knows how good this young striker will be?

It's not even January yet and the vultures are circling, this time they are exclusively of the Chinese variety 🤷‍♂️

There's reported interest in some of our other players too but these two are seemingly the main focus.
I like Saita, he's a very dependable CB, if not quite an automatic first choice.
But I've been thinking of selling Coulibaly for a while now as I just can't find room for him in the team.
I'd be looking at quite a bit more than his £21m value though
