Pre-match v Dundee United (a) - Ladbrokes Premiership (4)

SP4_DundeeUtd_media.thumb.png.b8a4d69b0ca4b2a90b7acad1797727fd.png

The Bhoys: Results so far this weekend, particularly Inverness's goalless draw against Aberdeen, mean that if you win at Tannadice Park you'll go top of the Premiership.

Stuniverse: That should be all the incentive and motivation my players need ahead of the international break. Celtic aren't used to chasing from behind, as we did last season this club traditionally wins the title by grabbing top spot early and then pulling away from the chasing pack. That's what we're keen to repeat this season. We won't be underestimating Dundee United but by the final whistle we want to be top dog again.

Dundee United v Celtic - Ladbrokes Premiership (4)

Team Selection

SP4_DundeeUtd_selection.thumb.png.8fe1fa1d48e27a48d6e045773e271bc0.png

Celtic are unchanged from the side that beat Kilmarnock 6-0 at Celtic Park last time out.

Highlights

Celtic had the better of the first-half, with Dundee United's goalkeeper, Jordan Archer, producing some fine saves, but there were no goals at the break.

HT: Dundee United 0-0 Celtic

Celtic substitute Lawrence Shankland broke the deadlock turning in Mikey Johnston's low cross. 0-1.

Post-match: Dundee United (0) 0-1 (0) Celtic

SP4_DundeeUtd_report.thumb.png.7fc397661150ae2fe7ad01a8094cc620.png

The Bhoys: Well it took a bit longer than you might've hoped to get the breakthrough. How relieved were you when Shankland scored to send you top of the Premiership?

Stuniverse: We had to be patient, yes, but that was mostly because of the brilliance of their goalkeeper Jordan Archer. I felt we were always in control of the game and it was a question of whether we could find a way past their goalkeeper or could Archer keep us out for the full 90 minutes? In the end, Lawrence Shankland scored the only goal of the game to give us the win.

At the back, we kept our second consecutive cleansheet and I was delighted by our defending today. Only scoring one goal meant we needed the cleansheet to secure the win. Defensively, I thought we were superb, restricting Dundee United to only one attempt on target.

The Bhoys: Ralston was taken off early in the first-half. How is he?

Stuniverse: Anthony has bruised an ankle so he should be fine to join up with the Scotland squad.

Stuniverse (Celtic manager):

The Bhoys: You have to wait the best part of two weeks for your next match. What's the plan during those two weeks?

Stuniverse: Well, with 27 players away on international duty, there's not a lot we can do. We'll give the players who aren't away with their national teams some time off and then we'll reconvene and prepare for our trip to the Caledonian Stadium to play Inverness.

MORRISON RETURNS TO GERMANY

The Bhoys: Celtic's 21 year-old centre-back Liam Morrison has returned to Germany to play for SC Paderborn in Bundesliga 2 for the season. Morrison has only just signed for Celtic from RB Leipzig but the loan move suggests manager Stuniverse didn't think Morrison would make the first-team ahead of Scott MckennaScott McKellarStuart Findlay and Chancel Mbemba and that it would be best for him to continue his development in Germany.

STUNIVERSE TRANSITIONING CELTIC TO BRITISH/IRISH

The Bhoys: Celtic manager Stuniverse said at the beginning of the summer transfer window that he wanted to transition the Celtic squad to have a more British/Irish feel about it, with a longer-term aim of becoming all Scottish/Home Grown.

Stuniverse has taken great strides towards that aim this summer, although we're not convinced that Celtic chairman Ian Bankier and the Board are fully behind Stuniverse’s plan - results, we assume, will be the telling factor in the end.

Non-British/Irish players

Celtic have only have two non-British/Irish players in the squad now, having ended last season with eight. The duo are 30 year-old DR Congolese centre-back Chancel Mbemba and 22 year-old Beligian attacker Evangelos Patoulidis. Pataloudis counts as HGC having joined Celtic in July 2020 from Standard Liege.

Non-Scottish players

There are five British/Irish players in the squad as follows:

  • 14. Joe Willock (English) - midfielder.
  • 18. Armstrong Oko-Flex (Irish) - winger/striker. Oko-Flex is HGN, having joined Celtic from Arsenal in August 2018, he spent a season out on loan at Peterhead, and three seasons with Livingston, before breaking into the Celtic first-team squad.
  • 23. Brandon Williams (English) - full-back (either side).
  • 28. Adam Idah (Irish) - striker.
  • 77. Karamoko Dembele (English) - right-winger. Dembele counts as HGC, having spent his entire football career so far at Celtic Park.

The full Celtic first-team squad and their home grown status is shown below: -

Pre-match v Inverness Caledonian Thistle (a) - Ladbrokes Premiership (5)

SP5_Inverness_media1.thumb.png.d444df0a5f44f4ab439ec3917382f8a5.png

The Bhoys: With Rangers beating Aberdeen 2-0 last night, you need to win at the Caledonian Stadium to regain top spot.

Stuniverse: That's what we want to do. This great club wins titles by grabbing top spot early and then pulling away from the chasing pack. That's what we did last season and that's what we want to do again this season.

SP5_Inverness_media2.thumb.png.c0eec3c180af4f3dc67f1d886f1fd6c4.png

The Bhoys: Are you surprised that Inverness Caledonian Thistle are early pace-setters this season with, like you, three wins and a draw from their opening four Premiership matches?

Stuniverse: No, not at all. This league constantly surprises me. Take last season, I didn't expect Motherwell to finish second-bottom nor Aberdeen to be in the Relegation Group after the split. The Premiership is more competitive than people give it credit for.

Inverness have a very good manager in Steven Pressley and, as I saw first-hand when I managed Falkirk to 6th in the Premiership, momentum can take you a long way. Sure, Inverness could've had tougher opening fixtures but you can only beat the team you're playing against, and 10 points from 12 will give them a lot of confidence.

They're riding that momentum wave right now and they'll think they are invincible. That'll make them very dangerous opponents today. But, if my players apply themselves professionally, match their opponents for commitment and work-rate, we're confident of being top of the league again by the final whistle.

Match Preview

The Bhoys: 27 players is a lot of players to be away on international duty. Has everybody reported back fit and healthy?

Stuniverse: It is, but it also shows the quality of players we have at this club at all levels. Fortunately, everybody returned unscathed and we have no new injury concerns.

Doubtful: Joe Willock (twisted knee-90), Anthony Ralston (bruised ankle-90), Callum Paterson (sports hernia-45).

The Bhoys: Looks like you were right with your pre-match assessment that Inverness were in a false position as early pace-setters.

Stuniverse: That's not what I said and definitely not what I meant. For saying we were the away team, I thought we controlled the game from start to finish and Inverness caused us very few problems throughout, whereas we were a constant threat to them going forward.

The Bhoys: Congratulations. You're top of the league and Celtic are the only unbeaten team in the Premiership.

Pre-match v Manchester United (H) - European Champions Cup Group A (1)

ECC_G1_ManUtd_media1.thumb.png.6890799d13816c07d0c49b2e5473172a.png

The Bhoys: Well here we are. The European Champions Cup Group Stage and an opening fixture at home to Manchester United. What are your thoughts ahead of the match?

Stuniverse: We're excited and we can't wait to get our European campaign underway this season. We've been handed a very difficult Group, but we start at home, in front of what promises to be a sellout Celtic Park crowd, and we're determined to get off to a good start.

ECC_G1_ManUtd_media2.thumb.png.688c0a77b7f06a4b80f364b9c484f30d.png

The Bhoys: Is a home win against Manchester United essential to your hopes of qualifying for the knockout round?

Stuniverse: I wouldn't say it's essential. No. But, let's be honest, a home win to start the campaign would be a massive boost to us. We saw last season, when we qualified from the Group, just how crucial our home games were in achieving that.

PSG have already beaten Olympiakos 6-0 and PSG and Manchester United are the clear favourites with the bookies to qualify from this Group. Assuming they are correct, we'll need to get results against Olympiakos ourselves and then take more points off either Manchester United or PSG than they take off us to stand any chance. So, yes, our opening Group game against Manchester United could be very important in the final reckoning.

Match Preview

The Bhoys: How's the injury situation looking?

Stuniverse: Pretty good, thank you, for a change. Callum Paterson is still rehabilitating after his sports hernia but, otherwise, our medical team have been able to put their feet up and have a rest this last few days and it's not often I'm able to say that.

Doubtful: Joe Willock (twisted knee-90), Callum Paterson (sports hernia-45).

OUT: Steven Harrison (GK).

Highlights

ECC_G1_ManUtd_lineups.thumb.png.9914e9c8adbecea49691b6a8e198cac8.png

Celtic probably had the better of the first-half but were unable to beat David De Gea in Manchester United's goal. At the other end, midway through the half, Celtic were indebted to their captain Scott McKenna who made a sensational last gasp tackle inside his own penalty area when United looked set to score.

HT: Celtic 0-0 Manchester United

46 minutes.

Celtic were caught cold after the restart as Potts-Jacobs gave Manchester United the lead. 0-1.

52 minutes.

ECC_G1_ManUtd_0-2.png.9c0dfbb29945986bd8cb2e16bfca9e87.png

Brandon Williams came on for Chancel Mbemba at right-back and within five minutes he conceded a penalty. Lautaro stepped up and made it 2-0 from the penalty spot.

60 minutes.

On the hour mark, Florentino made it 3-0 with an outrageous shot from outside the penalty area.

84 minutes.

Potts-Jacobs scored his second goal of the game with a thunderous drive from the edge of the penalty area. 0-4.

89 minutes.

Adam Idah came close to scoring a consolation goal for Celtic when his shot bounced back off the post and Manchester United cleared it to safety.

90 minutes.

ECC_G1_ManUtd_1-4.thumb.png.84c0b140f958b38d54e67cffb9480005.png

Adam Idah did pull one back for Celtic a minute later, heading in Karamoko Dembele's cross. 1-4.

90+4 minutes.

ECC_G1_ManUtd_1-5.thumb.png.c5c77ec6998ff60d5ad7511ced00f93a.png

Stevie Mallan took a corner for Celtic, Manchester United cleared it, Potts-Jacobs played a lovely forward pass and Anthony Martial broke through to round off a convincing 5-1 victory for Manchester United.

Post-match: Celtic (0) 1-5 (0) Manchester United

ECC_G1_ManUtd_report.thumb.png.bd2b4d0da56396cd59a1366067f80266.png

The Bhoys: After a first-half where you played well and, I thought, were unlucky not to be in front, that second-half display was abysmal. What went wrong?

Stuniverse: We weren't good enough. Plain and simple. First-half, yes, I agree, we played well and gave as good as we got, but we couldn't find a way past David De Gea.

Second-half, Manchester United came out fired-up and we were flat-footed and sluggish. Within a minute of the restart, we were behind. Barely five minutes later, we conceded an unnecessary penalty and were 2-0 behind. We shot ourselves in the foot and Manchester United then made their quality tell, picking us off as we pushed forward to try and get back into the game.

I don't like singling out individuals but Brandon Williams knows better than to tackle like that in the penalty area and I thought our goalkeeper Robby McCrorie should've saved the penalty - it seemed to go straight through him - and he probably could've done better with two of their other goals as well.

Stuniverse (Celtic manager):

ECC_G1_ManUtd_lgTab.thumb.png.331b65ae4a794cd6404dccdbcf719d1d.png

The Bhoys: Given the importance you placed on this match before kick-off, does such a humiliating defeat mean your European campaign is already over?

Stuniverse: No [laughs]. Of course not. We've only played one game. There's another five left to play. But this set-back certainly makes our chances of qualifying from the Group a lot harder.

SP6_Hamilton_media.thumb.png.c997456c63673d9666d944766a73785a.png

The Bhoys: Is it a relief to be back to Premiership action after the heavy defeat at the hands of Manchester United in the European Champions Cup?

Stuniverse: I wouldn't say a relief, as such. We didn't perform anywhere near our own high standards after the break against Manchester United and this Premiership game against Hamilton is our first opportunity to get that out of our system and show what we're really capable of.

The Bhoys: With the Betfred Cup Quarter-Final against Hibs on Tuesday night, are you likely to rotate against Hamilton?

Stuniverse: I think that's something we have to consider. Definitely. And not just because of the Hibs cup-tie, but because too many of our players under-performed against Manchester United.

Stuniverse: Possibly. I haven't decided yet. Some players were left out today because they didn't put in a good enough shift in midweek against Manchester United. The players who came in today did put in a shift and they've given me something to think about ahead of the Hibs Quarter-Final.

Pre-match v Hibernian (a) - Betfred Cup Quarter-Final

BC_QF_Hibs_media1.thumb.png.7734bfe72397e9f71222de849aa1056d.png

The Bhoys: Your defence of the Betfred Cup conitnues with a nostalgic return for you to your former employers Hibernian in the Quarter-Finals. Is it a help or a hindrance that you know Easter Road so well?

Stuniverse: I don't think it really matters as I'm not out on the pitch kicking the ball about. We do have a few former Hibs players and I expect for the likes of Stevie Mallan, Lawrence Shankland, Anthony Ralston and Fraser Hornby it's a motivation for them and more comfortable in familiar surroundings although, if I'm totally honest, the away dressing room isn't a patch on the home one.

BC_QF_Hibs_Napoli.thumb.png.8096733d5e454e1f4b15bffc951ffd44.png

For me, it's always a delight to come back to Easter Road as I had a very enjoyable and successful season here at Easter Road, and I'd probably still be the manager of Hibernian if it hadn't been for Neil Lennon surprising everybody by leaving Celtic Park to manage Napoli in Serie A, a move that didn't work out that well for him as he was sacked at the end of last season - somewhat harshly given that Napoli finished 2nd in Serie A, and made the semi-finals of both the Euro Cup and the Italian Cup.

BC_QF_Hibs_media2.thumb.png.aed7dc85b9831f12620f2937d67f8aff.png

The Bhoys: Domestically you're unbeaten in 11 Premiership matches now, stretching back to the end of last season, and you beat Hibs 3-1 earlier in the season in the Premiership. That must make you clear favourites tonight?

Stuniverse: That good run of form certainly gives us confidence and, domestically, we believe we have the team and the squad to beat anybody. We were good value for that 3-1 win but that game was played at Celtic Park in front of a large, partisan crowd. Hibs, as I know all too well, will be a different proposition at Easter Road with their own fans backing them. We're expecting around 6,000 Celtic fans in a crowd of about 17,000 and I'm sure the Bhoys will make themselves heard. We're confident of booking our place in the semi-final and sending our supporters back to Glasgow with great big smiles on their faces.

The Bhoys: Wow! That was some comeback... were you worried at all that your former club were going to knock you out?

Stuniverse: I think we have to give Hibernian and their manager Gaetan Bong a lot of credit. They took the game to us and caused us a lot of problems but, overall, we dealt with them. We scored early but, spurred on by their home support, they didn't let their heads drop and we were behind at the break. Cue my assistant, Jari Litmanen, we have this good cop, bad cop thing going and, credit where credit's due, Jari got the players fired up during the break.

In the second-half, the players really lifted their game, assisted by a couple of tactial changes we made, and they turned around a 1-2 deficit into a 4-2 win. There's a great togetherness in this squad, a lot of character and a steely determination. We always believe we can win and, as manager, I'm no good to the team if I panic and make rash decisions. We didn't have the best of first halves and were behind but we always had the belief we could improve in the second 45 minutes and turn things around. That's just what we did.

Stuniverse (Celtic manager):

BC_QF_Hibs_post_stuniverse.thumb.png.25daa03e61bb0b3de60a6ad8b28ef5b7.png

The Bhoys: A place in the semi-final is yours. Celtic are 90 minutes away from another Betfred Cup Final. Who do you want in the semis?

Stuniverse: It doesn't matter who I want or don't want. We can't control the draw or influence it and then the semi-final itself is over a month away. We'll see who we get in the draw, and then we'll focus on the Premiership and Europe and then prepare thoroughly for whoever we get in the draw at the appropriate time.

PERSONAL UPDATE - SAD NEWS

I hope this pandemic is treating you all kinder than it's been treating us. In May we lost two loved ones. One of our our Godsons passed away far too young at only 26 years-old and my Dad passed away too. Both have Covid-19 on their death certificates although my Godson was being treated for lymphoma and my Dad had other medical complications. Both went into hospital negative for Covid-19 and contracted it along the way. We've already attended our Godson's funeral and my Dad's funeral is booked. My Mum passed away in 2015.

I've been progressing this FM20 save but I'm finding it hard... not so much playing the games, because FM20 has been a great stress release for me during this lockdown and continues to be, but writing all the text that accompanies the updates on here has become hard work and not enjoyable - I play one game, write and upload the updates, and then can't face playing the next game because the prospect of writing another update is too much for me right now...

So, for now, I'll continue to update the save but the posts on here won't be as detailed with narrative as they have been in the past.

Hopefully, at some point, I'll be able to reinstate the more detailed updates you've been accustomed to on here.

I hope you and your families are well and keeping safe.

Best wishes,

Completely understandable that you might not have the mental wherewithal to write up those narrative posts these days. It's supposed to be fun, so don't do it if it isn't, particularly in these times.

My deepest sympathies to you and yours.

Sorry for your losses and it's good to hear that at least FM allows you some release. I am glad to see this continue. Carry on in the style that works for you!

Thank you, @Johnny-Trotter. Mum and Dad used to buy me Football Manager each year when it came on CD, and they would take an interest in who I was managing and how I was getting on. Doing the screenshots, without the narrative text, is working quite well for me at the moment.
