PaulHartman71
Diego Buckhard took over the NT. Whilst they haven't had the greatest of runs, he has managed to keep them in the Division C of the Nations League, which is another positive step. PaulHartman71
Mid-Season Update A decent run in the cup until we met RB Salzburg and took a bit of a pasting really. It's not been great if I'm honest. We're a bang average mid-table side who I managed to put a plaster on with a budget transfer window. Really we're a good 2-3 windows from being a position to cause any concerns for anyone half-way serious in this league. Through sheer luck more than anything else as we didn't have a win in our last 5 games of the first 22, we managed to finish 6th, on goal difference, which gets us into the Champions Playoff: Quite conveniently for us our points are halved, although we're still someway off anyone near us and I highly doubt we can pick up the sort of points that will see us get close. Incredibly, thanks to the Austrian's brilliant coefficient ranking just qualifying for this part gets us 6th place, which guarantees us Europa League Group Stage football next season even if the Cup winner is outside of the Top 6. This is doubly convenient as to be honest unless I can do some big business this summer I doubt we would otherwise have made it through the Europa League qualifying rounds `
PaulHartman71
The January window saw aging attacking mid who wasn't playing Alex Bachmann leaving for Admira Wacker for just over £2M, which for a guy who wasn't playing and wanted out was pretty good money, money that I could re-invest into the squad in the short-term. Given the money we had the best use of it was to raid the African market which we're highly connected in for some reason. I managed to pluck Frederick Kwateng from Ghanian outfit Ashanti Gold for a extremely cheap fee just under £200K, which for a guy who managed 19 caps for the national team seems insane value. He's not amazing technically, but is a solid defensive midfielder and for what we paid when we needed a body there we cannot complain at all. Shagari joins from Nigerian side Kano Pillars for a higher sum of over £1M, whilst again technically he's not the best, he has some very good mental and physical attributes and at 24 has plenty of room to develop. Our left back was a bit ropey and I think this guy can come in and start for us. Austria has a limit of 7 non-EU nationals in the squad, we're now up to 6, so I can't exploit the African market too much more in the summer, but as a short term squad filling option on a budget it's reaped rewards for us. PaulHartman71
End of Season Update If anything we probably did better than I expected to be honest, got like 4 wins and a few draws. We ended 6th which is what I thought, but for all intents and purposes we were like 5 points and goal difference off a spot in the Champions League group stages, which given the budget squad we've got is absolutely hilarious really. RB Salzburg win in the end, although Rapid Vienna finished on the same points. Austria Lustenau take what is essentially 7th and the spare Europa League spot, since Salzburg won the Cup too. Hadzovic probably player of the year, couldn't really pick out anyone else who was particularly amazing.

PaulHartman71
Celtic celebrate yet another Champions League as they keep their reputation as the side to beat in Europe these days. Vaduz are sunk on penalties by Ma ad United so will be back to the 1st round qualifiers of the Europa next year The real story here though is 4 Austrian sides making the last 16, with St Polten and Rapid Vienna making the last 8 (albeit getting smashed out once there) A sign of how good the Austrian league is looking at the minute and great for the coefficient rankings. A massive moment for Croatia as Dinamo Zagreb wind up winning the Europa League. They won it in 1969, but it's been 140 years since then, so a big moment for them and Croatia to do it. Osijek also made the quarter finals, with Sparta Prague of the Czech Republic in there, with Sturm Graz representing Austria, after an all-Austrian Last 16 tie with SV Mattersburg, who actually ended up 2 points away from being relegated in the Austrian PL Maybe there is hope for us in the Europa next season after all! PaulHartman71
Champions League Hall of Fame Celtic's rise continues as their trophy cabinet gets fuller and fuller. Only Real Madrid, Atletico, Man United and Man City have now won Europe's elite competition more times than they have.
PaulHartman71
Zagreb back on top in Croatia, with Osijek joining them in the Champions League next year. Lviv make it 5 in a row in Ukraine, but that's not the whole story, as Shakhtar led pretty much from Christmas, bottling the title on the last day. 3 sides in the CL next year for Ukraine which is good for them as I can't remember the last time they've had that many sides involved in it. The Czechs seem to have a mini Championship group thing at the end of the season, either way, Sparta Prague won the thing, with Slavia joining them in the CL next year. PaulHartman71
The coefficients have all gone a bit mental! That Europa League win is absolutely massive for Dinamo/Croatia, as it means from next season Croatia will have 4 spots in the CL group stages Top 4 is now Spain, Austria, France and Croatia, but it's ridiculously tight up there, 10 points between 1st and 7th (if you discount Liechtenstein who don't count) Germany and England down to 2 Group Stage sides each, Portugal with just 1 despite having 4 for so long. The mad thing is how much things can change each year now. A bad year in Europe for your sides could quite easily see you drop several places. corinthiano
Yeah the coefficients are brilliant, I love how it is a completely different world with so many smaller nations making it big, direct result of you having so many different leagues loaded over time. Makes the smaller nations easier to win though :P

It will be interesting moving forward though as it genuinely looks like that Top 4 could have 2/3 changes every season which will be pretty mad, for much of the save there’s at least been some stability to it for 5-6 years at a time normally. The only country where it’s never really had any impact is Ukraine really. I think now is their first season with 3 sides in the CL, which considering I jumped the gun a bit on them and have had their league loaded for absolutely ages is pretty mad really. Makes me worried about managing there as im guessing it means their HG rules makes it really hard to get the sides to do anything half decent
hasdgfas
It feels like so many players are so strong physically compared to their technical/mental attributes. You commented on your African players specifically, but also Hadzovic looks the same. Is that something consistent across the entire save at this point? Yeah, I definitely think that consistently the best players in the save are much more physically good than players of similar ilk/level at the start of the game. It's something I've kinda of got used to so don't notice so much, but it's definitely there I think.
PaulHartman71
A window where we had very few funds to spend, we had to sell to buy and we sold a few squad players for a combined £4M. I mainly bought some players to fill up the squad, Matas signed from the Croatian 2nd tier as a back-up right back. Don Middleton the young Englishman joins to be back-up keeper from League 1 Walsall. Luca de Meuron is a young Swiss striker released by Young Boys who will come in as our back-up striker. In terms of first team signings I got in Achille Eto'o from Cameroonian side Colon Sport, again a bit older than you'd like but we needed some quality in the midfield and I hope he can be it alongside Friday in there already. Another player I'm excited about is Lerry Nestor-Gotin, a young winger joins for nothing from a non-league French side. I think he looks a real talent and a plus from bargain bin shopping. PaulHartman71
January Window A pretty eventful January window to be honest. Michael Friday who joined in the first summer 18 months ago wanted to leave this summer, but I rejected the offers as nobody really wanted to pay what I wanted, Sturm Graz were interested in him after I transfer listed him as he was being a very negative influence. I accepted £5.5M which still wasn't quite what I wanted but still a £4M profit on him and I just wanted to get rid at that point. Andreev and Kokoszka were back-up CAM/AML options. Neither particularly young and neither particularly playing that much or happy about that, so they were let go after putting in transfer requests for reasonable money considering they weren't playing that much for us and their age. Filip Fransson actually our first choice keeper who had a bid in from Rapid Vienna, didn't really plan to sell him but given the decent offer they put in and how easy it is in this save to get a pretty good keeper for this level on the relative cheap I thought we could probably upgrade on him anyway so I didn't really midn selling him to be fair. Inevitably all those outgoings led to a lot of incomings as well. Sanz looks a real talent, really happy to have managed to get him. He had just over 6 months left on his contract when I signed him provisionally in November, obviously would've been available on a bosman but I think better clubs would've come in for him and we needed him now. It did take a lot of persuading to get him, including put in a £7.5M release clause which means we won't make much of a profit on him if we are forced to sell at some point, but I thought it was still worth getting him in as he was so much better than any other target we had scouted. Mercier came through Anderlecht's youth system and has never seemed to get a much of a look in there, pretty pleased to get him for £2M though, should add some competition on the left wing and he's young enough to improve enough to start for us regularly as well. We didn't have a 2nd choice left back at all really so I needed to get someone in. Real Madrid B seemed to be having a fire-sale and we managed to pick this chap up for under £1M which again bargain basement deal I think. Again, young enough to potentially progress too, although he's unlikely to get a look in at left back any time soon. We were a bit short at CB so another young Spanish lad comes in, this time from Valencia B. Should add some depth which is all we need really. We needed a keeper obviously and I'm pleased with one African leaving in Michael Friday we managed to get another one in delving back into a very fruitful foreign market. Pierre Lago joins from the Ivory Coast for £1.5M, looks a top top signing, for that money just insane value and he's already got 4 caps for the national team as well. Only 22. Pretty much a perfect signing really for a club at our level.
PaulHartman71
Mid-Season Update Part of the reason I wasn't bothered about doing so much business in January was that we were eliminated from Europe anyway so didn't need to worry about registration of too many new players. I didn't expect to get through the group and as I said before I didn't think we'd make the group stage if we'd had to qualify for it. I felt we did alright and didn't get embarrassed in what was a pretty tough group. A decent experience and got a bit of money out of it. A relatively kind run so far in the Cup has seen us get to the Semi Final stage. Would be massive to make the final, although last year we came unstuck against the bigger sides, so we'll have to see how we get on. A fairly similar campaign to last year, although the teams above us didn't seem to do as well so was less distance between us. It was always between us and Mattersburg for the final 6th spot and our final league game at home to them was essentially a playoff to see who got there, as if we'd lost they would've got it over us. Thankfully we beat them. The way the Austrian PL works is sort of like an F1 race where you can have teams quite a way ahead of you, but the 50 percent thing sort of acts as like a mid-race safety car so any lead they had is heavily reduced. Despite being 6 points off of the title we have no chance of that, but if our new signings gel together and we hit the ground running, against all the odds and not really being good enough for that level, we have to think we have a really good outside chance of making Top 4 and getting into the CL next year
PaulHartman71
End of Season Update We have to be pretty happy to end up 3 points off of 4th which would've got us into the Champions League. A decent enough end to the season in the league which gives us something to build upon next season. Hadzovic probably our best player again this year. PaulHartman71
A fantastic run in the Austrian Cup sees us only go and win it! Unexpected, but we did have a kind run without playing any of the top top sides. Brilliant all the same to get a trophy.

PaulHartman71
Wolfsburg take home the Champions League for the first time in 32 years, beating Marseille in the final. Rapid Vienna doing really well to make the Semi Final, with Zagreb of Croatia also in the knockout round. Koln win the Europa League, not a great year for Austrian sides and our coefficient

PaulHartman71
Hajduk win the Croatian title on the last day, with 4 sides getting CL group stage. 6 in a row for Lviv and it's Vorskla who make the Champions League ahead of Shakhtar. Sparta Prague top again in the Czech Republic.
PaulHartman71
Some bad bad news as the jolly up in Austria is over. We lose the 4 group stage spots in the CL as of next season, and perhaps even worse for us, if we finish 5th or 6th we end up in the Europa League qualifiers instead of the Group Stage. Bad times indeed. If anything it looks like we might drop a place next year which isn't great.
PaulHartman71
Just to clarify to any long-time followers of this thread, it's not going anywhere, I have started a new thread for the time being for a FM21 save as I've come across an idea that I'd really quite like to do in the short-term, but that thread has a maximum shelf-live of 30 seasons, so this thread will still be finished - I'll quite possibly still play this one alongside it, but at least for the next few weeks or so probably won't be massive amounts of updates in here.
