Discussion: A 2D match engine or a 3D Match Engine

Recommended Posts

I wonder if SI can manage to get hold of the Sensible Soccer Engine & revamp it slightly. That game rocked back in the day...

Pro Evo/Fifa etc all have no appeal to me (last I bought was Fifa 98: RTWC on the PSX).

2D all the way for me. I personally don't think 3D would work that well in this game and you may find what you see becoming very repetative very quickly. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

It would be no more repetitive than the real thing if they actually use some AI & Physics in the engine. It's not that hard to implement & could create almost endless variations.

SI might need to get a few talented programmers who specialise in Physics/AI though as the current state of it is not too great to be honest.

Without question, with today's technology and processing power, 2D is the only game in town.

A 3D engine would need 4 to 5 years of design, R&D, test bedding, programming, tuning and integration into the game engine, as well as an ever increasing number of staff and testers, just to be at the level of CM4.

The sad fact is that if a proper, real-time 3D football management simulation engine was possible, we would have seen it already or at least be told about it by another developer (LMA and its ilk do NOT count). A 3D engine might be the future, but it's a long, long way away. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Todays technology & processing power is more than capable of running simple 3D engines with good AI/Physics. If a Playstation can do it, so can a PC released in the last ~5 years or so.

I'm all for a good 3D match display, but EA has been trying to do that and failing miserably for about 10 years now... so it's not gonna happen anytime soon.

It's better to stick to the 2D and focus on polishing up the really important bits. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

EA can't do anything right though so that's not really a problem. I do agree that outside of the pitch lots of work is needed but if they started work on 3D now we might see some beneficial improvements in the engine before it goes fully 3D.

In support to one of Mitja's comments, I think an improvement in the text commentary would be far more beneficial than a change to the 2d display.

I think it is in the player's interest to know whether a player has slid for the tackle, or fallen over, etc... and this can be represented with a wider variety of commentary phrases implemented when and where necessary.

Definitely 3D. 2D especially the current extremely basic version that we have is unable to show us what is going on in the pitch. We dont need photo realistic players. That is something that belongs in an arcade engine. All we need is just a little variety between player faces.

Considering how slow FM has been developed the past 5 years i think we will be looking at small dots for the next 10 years.

I really just want something that shows what the current engine fails to do. Best way to explain this is to use an example I was thinking about.

In my recent game, my striker had several good chances from through balls as he was up against a slower defender. He missed all but one. This could be due to his average composure, or maybe just a bad day, or maybe he was pushed a little and lost his balance, or maybe the ball was bouncing erratically in front of him.

The current match engine does not differentiate between these. Dots that don't completely muscle each other off the ball just end up in the same place. There is no sign of pushing or bumping. A ball bouncing low due to a midfielder's poor pass is not shown in the 2D screen. Thus, when you thing about it, we are just guessing over a myriad of possibilities, and sometimes (in the case of a midfielder making poor passes) maybe missing the actual source of the problem.

I would love to see a 3D match engine but its not currently going to be good enough. Mostly because matches can become repetitive and also its a major problem to recreate every player. Im a SWFC fan and on FIFA, before the roster update, Mark Beevers looked nothing like him and it annoyed the hell out of me so thats another big problem I have with it.

we won't see a 3D for at least some 5-10 years now, imho. there's so much potential in 2D that hasn't been reached yet. this is a simulation game and I would like to see real 90 min of a game, not 15 like Fifa or PES (I don't realy know how long games last there but probably there's a mode where you can choose between 10, 15, 20.. lol )

I wonder how buggy and repeatative would 3D be in this moment

I'm sure if you guys could see C. Ronaldo or Mancini doing their step-over moves and leaving some defender eating grass in 3D you would change those 2D votes real quick.

It's 2008 people and quad core highpowered computers will be cheap by the end of this year, I vote 3D. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

step overs are overrated man, just look at messi...haven't seen him do a step over and he's the best player in the world...
