Derby Appoint Knott

Three hours had passed and knott had barely cleared his desk when he was called by a guy asking to meet at a bar to discuss a big job in the championship.

It was the Derby Chairman.

It seemd knott had a nack of turning clubs around and getting them promoted without really breaking the bank. This kind of job is what has made knott popular with chairman around the country after work at Middlesbrough and Southend. Only this job was the opposite.

Knott was offered a 10m Transfer kitty and a wage bill that would give some premiership clubs a run for there money. With the Championship well under way knott knew a play off dash would be at best so the unhappy players were on there way and only a couple of loans deals were agreed.

There was no pressure this season to achieve anything so anything higher than where the club was when he took over would be a bonus so a top half finish was welcomed by the board.

Knott found himself in a new position with money to spend and some top european players interested. so all eyes were turning to Derby for next season!

After the poor season last time out Palace manager Andy O’Malley had one thing on his mind and that was promotion. We had become a feeder club for Manchester United so the was going to be some top youngsters available to add to the good squad we already had. We increased the budget so I was able to keep all the players I wanted. We started the season very strong and were soon top of the pile. We were able to hang on to Kermar Daley who is a Jamaican international amc who was top of the assists chart in all of his 3 seasons at the club and was top again. We had a poor run in the all the cups but as promotion was the main objective and we was doing well in the league the board and fans alike was not too bothered.

As there season drew to an end we fell out of the top two and to our lowest position of the season 4th with 4 game to play. Coventry was looking like the champions and have a very good squad that had played in the championship the year before. 2nd was the best we could hope for and a run of 2 wins and a draw saw us going into the last game needing a point or 3rd placed Bury getting a 20 goal turn around, it was just not going to happen. Coventry was only 2 points ahead so if they lost or drew and we won we could go up as champion’s. At one point, we were top as they were losing but they soon got into gear and won as we did. We did it we got back to the championship. The fans and board was over the moon. O’Malley now has three promotions and a JPT cup win under his belt, his rep has rose to national, and that is sure to alert other clubs looking for a manager. We have got 2 promising youth players coming in from France on free transfer’s and have also had the youth facility’s upgraded. The bank balance is looking a lot better so the future is looking bright for the eagle’s but we must keep hold of the better players to have a chance. Next season will be tough and we will be looking to stay up and push on after that.

Season 2014-2015

League 2

Final position: 6th

It is never easy to adapt with higher leagues the first season when you go up, but finishing 6th and getting to playoffs was over achievement by any standards. Although we lost in the playoff first round to Crystal Place, the season was considered a success.

Transfer policy

Again some young talent for the future was brought but the key squad was the same than season before in the lower league. So good work from the boys.

At the same time made the first bigger sell of the career, sold Joseph Mendes to Plymouth for 28k.

SEASON 2019/2020 UPDATE

After leaving Macclesfield Town last season to take charge of Rochdale, Jim Barclay set to work in the preseason trying to bring in players to strenghten the squad. A lot of last seasons squad left due to contract negotiations breaking down, with the board being financially crippled. Barclay brought in 15 new faces and just hoped that they'd gel quickly enough to make a decent start to the season.

The media prediction of 21st showed that it was going to be a long, hard season and wins would be hard to come by.

Rochdale got off to a slow start and things never really picked up. They went on a horrific run which would eventually cost Jim Barclay his job. The players he brought in just didn't look comfortable with each other and the fans turned on them and the manager.

So, in November 2020, the Rochdale board called the manager into the boardroom and sacked him.

Rochdale at the time had only won twice in seventeen league games and had been knocked out of the JPT. The final straw came as they were thrashed 4-0 at home to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup first round.

Things never improved for Rochdale as they went on to finish bottom of league 2 and were relegated from the football league. They finished 16 points behind nearest rivals Walsall who were also relegated and due to the poor finances at the club they were also docked 10 points.

Manager Jim Barclay took the rest of the season off and as the new 2020/21 season gets underway it is rumoured that he is in talks with BSP outfit Luton Town.

As the leagues get higher, the games get tougher and first season in League one showed exactly that. Team was never really threatened by relegation but at the same time not really contending for any higher positions. Season itself was good enough.

Transfer policy

Again, no changes with key personnel.

Season 2017-2018

League 1

Final position: 7th

FAC 2nd Round

LC 2nd Round

Only a slight increase in performance, which helped us getting to 7th position and to playoffs but the team was not good enough to win the playoff first round and therefore another year in League 1 was upon us. But with the visible improvement, we were looking optimistically to next season.

Transfer policy

Due to limited financial possibilities and transfer policy of signing players with potential, yet again no key players were signed. But it was good to see young players evolving and repaying slowly the trust which was invested in them when signed.

Meanwhile the season also included one major transfer, where Vladimir Kocourek, a player not able to find first team games, was sold for 850k. It was necessary for the team, as the financial side of the team was getting weaker. This transfer helped the team a lot and some of the money was used to build some much needed extra seats to the already newly built stadium.

Finally the young team was mature and gelled enough to win the League 1 by surprise. We were in top places throughout the season and even though we had some bad spells, we managed to hold the advantage until the end. It was a big day for the manager, the players and the club. First time we were to taste good english championship level football.

Transfer policy

With the team promotion from league one, our players were scouted more and more by bigger teams and due to this new transfer fee record was made, when Chelsea bought young and talented frenchman Omar Ba for 1M pounds. And that was not all. Also another young talented central defender, Nik Grasic, was bought by Liverpool for 650K. Even though both fees were way too small for a players of such caliber, it did help the team to be financially sound and ready for new challenges. Total of 1,9M on transfers were made that season.

LC 2nd round vs Birmingham

As many times before, the promotion year seems to bring out an extra boost from the team and seemingly also increase the luck factor significantly. With the team expected to fight for relegation, we somehow managed to end up 5th when all games were played. But it was not a big surprise to see us losing in playoff semis to Leicester. Of course we wanted to see miracle happen and were a bit disappointed with that result, but at the end of the day again the team showed good spirit and another successful year for Ebbsfleet was behind us.

Transfer policy

Lot of high potential youngsters were signed and lot of youngsters who were not cutting it, were released. Total 650k on transfer income was made.

After being pressurised by my wife to move back home to Spain I came to the decision that England was no longer for me and my family. It was a hard decision but after some thoughts I resigned from Bolton the very next day and set my sights on a few Spanish clubs. We packed up and moved back home to Zaragoza in the north east of the country. I was lying on the beach taking in some rays when my agent called me about a possible opening at Racing Club, The Chairman was keen to have me at the club and invited me to El Sardinero for some more talks.

We had a great meeting with the chairman of Racing and I was offered a contract that I said I would take some time to look over. I got home and told my wife that I had a job offer for Racing and she was delighted with how close it was to home. Situated on the North coast of Spain and less then a stone's throw from the beach she told me it was perfect. A Few days later I got the call asking if I have considered the offer and I told the Chairman that I would be delighted to work for such a well supported club.

So here's to a new life in Spain.

After taking over Los Racinguistas in November they was sitting rooted to the foot of the table, This was not were this club wanted to be and its my job to turn this around. After sorting out the backroom with some new staff I starting looking towards the transfer window opening soon and a chance to bring in a few players to strengthen the team. Marcelinho was the biggest signing of the window as we signed the Brazilian striker for £14.25M from Grêmio, Nassim Arnold was signed from Valenciennes FC for £1.9M, Abdoul Awandjinou joined us for £1M from Petrolul, Powerful striker Mohamed Zouaoui signed from Etoile du Sahel for a bargin price at just £4M and French Midfielder Roberto Freire signed for £2M from OM.

We managed to finish the season in a respectable 11th place, just 5 points away from a place in Europe. The fans and board were delighted that we had finish mid table after being bottom of the league when I took over the managers role and I have promised them that this is only the start of what I had planned for the club. After speaking to the media after the final game I discussed what I see for the future of the club and I was pretty clear that this club will be pushing for a top 5 finish next season if the board would back me with a little money to bring in the players needed to achieve this. we have some good players at the team and with 1 or 2 key signings and a new defence we could put together a campaign that would see us qualifying for a European competition.

With Wigan now a Premier League team it was time to clear out on the players that were barely fringe players for a Championship club and consider who is tough enough as well as good enough to help the team in their new adventure. With several players being released from Wigan in the cull only one name stuck out amongst them Andy Carroll, one player who was a class act for the club in the Championship who goes by the name of Tomi Bland the young and exciting welsh attacking left sided midfielder/striker decided that he was too big for a team like Wigan. He regretfully left on a free transfers after saying he wanted to join a bigger club, he currently sits in the free available players list and would remain there for the forthcoming season.

In the previous January transfer window a swoop for one of Wigans best midfield players Dante Marchetti from Aston Villa's Fergus Martin left what was considered a massive hole in the Center Mid position, considered a key position for the manager and with it now the pre-season the time was right to go out and look for a player or players to help fill the void. The search for the new 'talent' was on with Wigan searching worldwide for players but based on the previous seasons players brought in on loan from teams in England it was decided that young Italian Davide Capetti and a young Englishman from Huddersfield by the name of Gavin Mackenzie were targeted.

Both players cost a fee in the region of £3m each, but the search wasnt about to stop just there..another talent named Melaard had been spotted plying his trade in the Netherlands with Roda JC, scouts were sent out to help judge his potential and came back with a great report which meant an offer was made for the young Dutchman. Rumour had it that Bayer Leverkusen manager Jonny Kaufman was looking into the availability of Melaard himself, with this believed to be the case a formal offer for the player was made, Roda JC then accepted the offer and a contract was offered to Melaard who then signed for the Latics for a fee of £5.25m.

Then on the advise of Villa's Martin who pointed out 2 players were about to become out of contract, both were checked out and then offered contracts which both then accepted. One of these players was Loncaric a goalkeeper who was said to be a better player than the Goalkeeper from last season Fraiser Forster and the other Crespin a rather young good potential striker from Argentina. The spending spree had pretty much stopped there.

The transfer window in January was a little different as Wigan manager Stevens went out and splashed the cash bringing in

Results wise it was a pretty decent season for a first time in the Premier Legaue for the Latics Manager Stevens. Having said that he was prepared to take quite a few beatings this time around and really didnt expect much except being on the end of a relegation battle all the way through the season. Some good results came and went and some proper beat downs were given to Wigan especially from Alex Holligans Manchester City who absolutely smashed us, lessons were learned after those games.

It wasnt really until towards the end of the season that results started to pick up when Wigan most needed them as they were drawn in towards the relegation battle. A team meeting was called hours before the game to West Ham and the players agreed that they really wanted to stay another season in the Prem, the game ended 2-1 to the Hammers in what was a really close game. Wigan went on to beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1, Manchester United 4-1, Bolton 3-2, Fulham 2-1 but ended up losing the final game of the season to Arsenal 3-2 after being 2-0 up at half time.

Cup wise it was a bit of the same old story as Wigan reached the semi final of the League Cup yet again, this was the 3rd time in Stevens' charge that Wigan had made a semi final of a cup competition. This time they met Sheffield Wednesday and it was another one sided affair. FA Cup wise it was a bit of a low point as Stevens left the game in the capable hands of the assistant manager only to learn that he had lost the game to Andy OMalley's Crystal Palace.

End of the season it was Wigan that had proudly secured their position as a Premier League team for another season with those valuable wins and other results from other games. Then came the clubs website update..

Was Stevens about to leave for West Brom or Chelsea?

With a mid table finish behind them after the brush with European football. Martin sat down with the squad at the traditional end of season meal.

Well lads, a lot of effort went into that season, and I think we have all learned a lot, and developed as a unit well. Unless any of you want to leave now, then I don't forsee making any changes during the summer. I've already arranged for a highly talented Argentinian RB to come on to give Igor some help. Drio and I will work on a few things during the summer which should help you all out, and when we get back from the break, we'll be able to get right down to business

And so, as the squad disappeared to the four corners of the globe and for some international duty during the summer, Martin sat with his trusty backroom staff and studied videos of the previous season. There were some howlers from players, and there were some obvious tactical errors that were taking place. The players mistakes could be put down to just that, they would learn from their mistakes, but would the management learn from theirs? As the squad re-assembled after the break Martin explained to the team where he thought the management had gone wrong and set about putting it right during pre-season. It would take time, but would it work. They would roll the dice and find out!

And so, the team got to work. The pre-seaon matches went well, not spectacular, a little disjointed but well enough that Martin was content with the progress being made. The start to the competitive matches was less impressive as The Villains squandered chances against a tough West Ham side away and went down meekly, losing 2-0. Martin was not impressed and let the team know, in no uncertain terms. With a relatively small squad, Aston Villa simply did not have the resources to go out and buy back to solve any weaknesses and these lads would have to up their game in competitive matches. They responded magnificently in the next match at home to Newcastle winning 2-0. The dressing room was a much happier place, and a little squad rotation for the next match, a LC tie against Leicester allowed some legs to be rested, whilst giving valuable game time to fringe players. Being taken to extra time did nothing for Martin's mood and the fringe players were given a quick blast for not getting the job done more comfortably. As injuries and suspensions would no doubt occur, these players had to be ready to step into the limelight and grab their chance.

Season Summary - Part One

Bigger fish were to be fried before Martin could contemplate whether sufficient improvement in the players ability and cohesion would require surgery at Xmas. he had stood by these players for a long time, and would continue to trust them. A solid win against Blackburn was followed by the destruction of Stoke by 5 goals to nil. It is rumoured that Stoke manager Rob Knott was so incensed that he would not get out of the bath after the match. The big teams were to come next and this would be where the test of their improvement would be. Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham in the LC. A surprise home win against Arsenal, who in fact looked a very weak side, was followed by an extra time win against a very powerful Spurs side, in which the fringe players were again played, following Martin's long held policy of using the LC to keep fringe players fresh and lively. A spirited 1-1 draw away to Chelsea followed and with those matches out the way, things looked promising. The Villains would go on to win 5 out of the next 7 matches, losing only once, at home to Huddersfield, whilst dishing out thrashings to Wigan and Southampton 5-0 and 6-1 respectively. Drawing away to Watford, who had been playing extremely well was unexpected, whilst losing 5-0 away to Spurs, was unacceptable. This was definetely a match in which a red card chaged events, the card being given to GK Garnier, who inexpicably decided to walk out of the area with the ball in his hands for no apparent reason.

The team began to wobble. With Garnier suspended for 3 matches, French U-20 international Hines came into the line-up and performed well, despite the team going on to lose 6 out of the next 6 league matches. In the LC, The Villains continued to take forward steps and would edge out Reading in the Q/F. With the January window approaching, it was time for a team meeting. Having been in the top 4 for most of the season, The Villains had slipped to 5th and any further slump in form could throw them back into mid-table, Martin let the players know that he was happy with their progress, but that they could not rest on their laurels. They had to bounce back.

That Was The Window That Was

Martin reviewed the squad sheets with his trusted aide de camp as the window. Unless something major happened in January, they were comfortable with what they had, despite not having a free scoring striker, things were going well. Garnier continued to improve between the sticks, despite his aberration at Spurs, Crespin and Cabano had settled well at FB, whilst Fonseca, Bessa and De La Canal were rotating well. Zhao and Visser continued to keep out Liu and Marchetti, whilst on the right flank, Garnier Jnr and Denis vied for the position. On the left, Fabbi and Policka, whilst occassionaly brilliant were at times frustrating. Up front, Vanyushin, the old man of the team at 27, Grishin and Nene competed for the lone strikers slot. With an eye to the future, Martin had acquired a couple of youngsters during the summer, a very promising Dutch U-19 forward and a Japanese U-21 international at a bargain price from the friendly club in Spain, Valencia. With the vultures hovering over some of the players, Martin sent out the scouts to find and prepare for any raid on his resources. Randy Lerner was proving to be a not so benefacting owner, demanding his money back at every opportunity, thus loading the club with loan repayments. With these loans impacting severely on club finances, players would have to be sold in order to redress the balance, but Martin was determined to get the best price he could refusing all offers until the board said otherwise.

Inevitably, Visser was the first to be subjected to bids and with Martin unable to negotiate a new contract, Man Utd matched his release fee of 14m, money that would temprarily assist the ever increasing defecit. Lui had not played many games so far, but had proved himself more than capable. Unsurprisingly, not only were the players in demand, the staff were too, and two scouts were lost as The Villains could not reach an increased contract agreement with them. However perhaps the biggest loss was to happen in the last week of the window as Real Madrid, perhaps one of the richest clubs in the game forced Randy Lerner into accepting an offer of 25m spread over 36 months. Martin was apoplexic with the board, but realistic in the knowledge that he would be unlikely to be able to hang on to the better players in the longer term. Acting swiftly, Martin secured a promising CB replacement and tied up a 10m deal for a young Bolton player he had admired for a while. It may take time for them to settle, however Martin was confident that the team could remain as competitive as before, considering the fringe players coming in, all had valuable first team time behind them.

Season Summary - Part Two

The team talk appeared to have worked, as The Villains kicked off the New Year with an FA Cup 3rd Round win over Norwich, following it up 4 days later with a solid win against Manchester Utd. A disappointing, performance wise, draw against Newcastle led to a run of 7 straight wins, including the defeat of West Ham Utd in both legs of the LC, back to back wins over Everton in the FA Cup and League, and a good win over struggling Arsenal. The Villains could smell silverware at the end of the season as the LC final pitted them against Newcastle, but before that they faced some tricky matches. A 7 match winning streak suddenly become a 3 match losing streak, including being knocked out of the FA Cup by Stoke. Things did not look good in the run up to what was undoubtedly the biggest match Villa had played in for some years. Struggling to a 3-2 win over Wigan brought some confidence back, and The Villains took to the pitch for the LC with confidence, but not before Martin had pulled the team together for one final briefing.

This is it boys, this is what you play football for, the chance to win a medal, the opportunity to become a hero to the fans that follow you, week in, week out, through thick and thin. You are by far the better team, now go out there and show the fans that you are. Give them what they deserve

With Martin's words ringing in their ears, Newcastle were no match for a rampant Villa, and were summarily destroyed 5-0. Aston Villa had won the LC, the first trophy in their cabinet for many a year. The fans were delirious, the board were overjoyed, but Martin was wistfully thinking that if they could pull off the right results, the season could be even better. Euro Cup qualification had been assured, why could they not push for a CL slot. Some big games to come, but they were in the mix. With nine games to play, they still had a chance, didn't they? 5 of the games were away from home, culminating with an away match against a strong Sheff Wed side. There were a couple of tough fixtures in there, but the rest were winnable weren't they. What transpired was another case of awayitis, as the Villains would win their home matches with ease, but drop points away from home, leaving them with the need to win their last game. With one final push from the gaffer, Sheff Wed were brushed aside, and Aston Villa had secured a CL slot. Get the passports ready, The Villains are coming.

Northampton FC – The Mighty Cobblers

A hush descended over the press conference at Sixfields Stadium as the board announced that, with their relegation from the football league, and subsequently from the Blue Square Premier, they were moving forward with a new manager who they felt would provide a new broom, and sweep through the club like a tornado through a midwest caravan park.

Enter Stephen McGuinness

A few camera's clicked, a few microphones were half-heartedly raised, but for the most part, a resounding “Who the **** is this?” went around the room. Nobody had heard of McGuinness, he had no managerial pedigree, and most importantly, he had …..a beard.

“Stephen , Stephen , Andy Cartwright, Northampton Evening News. Can you give us a little insight into your background in football, and what we can expect from you and the club going forward

“Andy , thanks for asking. The club has for a long time underachieved , this is a massive club, in a massive town, and we have been playing like were a semi-pro outfit. Ill be undertaking a massive restructuring here. The entire backroom staff have been sacked and after discussions with the chairman, we have released 23 youth and first team players.”

“Uhhhh. Wow. Thats pretty drastic. Do you think those players were underachieving, or were never going to make the grade?”

“Aye. All garbage. This club is going to repeat its famous promotion run , and be the fastest club ever to go from BSN to the EPL. I have a 5 year plan, and in year 5 , I want us to be in the Championship, and ready to push for promotion to the Premiership. The chairman has backed me with whatever finance I need, the decks have been cleared, and we have reviewed the season ticket list and removed anyone who criticised the board , the players or the management on Internet Forums or Radio Talkshows, or who has the surname Fotheringham , Holligan or Kaufman.”

The assembled journalists scribbled furiously at their notepads. No manager had ever been this forthright, no manager had ever been so direct. Except one.

The special one.

Could McGuinness be the Sixfields Special One?

Time will tell …..

Our first season back in the championship and the aim must be to stay up first and see what happens. We have brought some promising youngsters in from France and also got rid of all the deadwood in the squad. We have added some much-needed experience at the back and upfront bringing in James Chester and Jose Baxter. We also signed some top youngsters from Manchester United and Manchester City. The season started well and had us flirting with the play-offs all season, which was not expected. Stoke was looking like the team to beat along with Southampton and they set the pace and showed us how far we was away from being able to challenge the top teams of the league. As the season wore on and injuries and suspension’s kicked in we fell away from the play-offs and ended up finishing a respectable 10th and after considering we was tipped for relegation it was a good season. Signing of the season has to go to Jose Baxter who topped the clubs scoring charts with 26 goals in all competions. Cups were a non-starter really and we got knocked out in the first round of the league cup and the fourth round of the F.A cup. All in all a good year and one we made a profit and saw our average attendance of over 20k, up 7 k on last season. The aim for next season must be the play-offs and get some more young players in who we can sell on and make money. We have upped the budget to a lofty 110k per week and now have a under 18 side again but money needs investing to get it back up to the standard we are now playing at.

After starting the season so well with Racing we was sitting top of the league in November, Then the news came that the Racing fans were dreading.. Valencia had approached me with a 3 year contract to take the managers position at the Estadio Mestalla. It was a massive opportunity for me and Valencia had a 64,500 capacity stadium and top of the range facilities and despite not playing in a European competition this season they were still regarded as one of the biggest clubs in Spain. I had no hesitation in quickly accepting the contract offer and moved myself and my family to the City the very next day. The racing fans were disappointed that I had just turned by back on the club the way I did and I didn't even say goodbye to some of the players and staff at the club. A new start at Valencia and I was not going to be wasting no time in getting started in my new position.

After sitting down in the boardroom with the clubs chairman and board members they stated that the club should be and belong in a European competition and they promised me a £70 million war chest to get this club back were they belong. After some movements in and out with the back room staff it was time to look towards the January transfer window to rebuild this team. A lot of players came and went in January as the team went through a mid season facelift.

Challenging for the title most of the season we started to drop in form and morale in the closing 10 games and ended up finishing in 5th place, not the finish we had in mind but the board was delighted that we had qualified for a European competition next season and a defeat to Real Madrid in the Spanish cup semi final to end our hopes of cup success. The lads have gone on holiday and the work begins on rebuilding for my 1st full season in charge of Valencia and the prospect of playing in Europe if we qualify for the group stages of the Europa League.

Doncaster (Bowman Pen 21', Darren Oliver OG - 87') 2 – 1 Northampton (Buckley 61')

Match Report #1

“There were a lot of positives to take from the game. This is a new squad, and they gelled well together. We had a lot of possession, and we scored the only goal of the game from open play. The penalty was disappointing, and perhaps someone should have gone to Specsavers today because nobody else felt it was a penalty. Darren Oliver is absoloutely gutted in the dressing room, and its not fair on the lad, who had a great game and was unlucky with the deflection for the own goal. Hopefully we can take this performance into our home games and show the fans what the players can really do when we take our chances”

Northampton (Jimmy Allen 89') 1 – 1 Histon (Colin Steven 56')

Match Report #2

“I cant say im anything but disappointed by that performance. We didnt hold the ball well enough, we allowed Histon too much room down the flanks and they punished us. Our fullbacks have both got to take a look at themselves, because they didnt tackle well, or provide support to the midfield, and made things difficult for the centre halves by allowing a constant flow of crosses. Im sure Histon's fans will be happy with this result, but to be fair, they probably deserved all three points today. If I see more performances like this, I will be looking to rotate things and every player should be aware that nobody is guaranteed a starting spot in this squad. There are no Galactico's at Northampton”

Northampton 0 – 1 Southport (Drew 76')

Match Report #3

“We were awful. I sent out a bunch of men to play football, and they played like schoolchildren. I gave them a bollocking in at half time, but theres a mentality here that because theyre on the best money in the league, they just need to turn up and they'll get the three points. I cant allow that to continue, so I will be dipping into the loan market this week to give some of our players competition for a role they think is their's by right”

Accrington Stanley (McMillan 42', Brown (Pen 62') 2 – 0 Northampton

Match Report #4

Northampton manager McGuinness made himself unavailable for comment after this performance. Locked in the dressing room with the players for almost an hour after the game, a dressing down of epic magnitude appeared to be taking place. Some players emerged looking like rabbits in the headlights, others with visible bruising.

Match Report #5

Northampton (Harvard 68') 1 – 2 Mansfield (Naylor 25', Finnis 66')

“I was pleased with the quality of our attacking play , but again at the back we just let ourselves down. Too many sloppy passes, not enough supporting the midfield, and just not enough commitment in our tackles. Weve got a couple of lads coming in on loan this week, and they will be going straight into the side. The second goal was bad luck , the rebound went straight into Finnis' path, and even I could have scored that. We must improve for next week.”

Match Report #6

Redditch 0 – 3 Northampton (Fasko 2'. Harvard 29', Oliver 82')

“The lads deserve total credit for tonights performance. From the opening whistle, we applied ourselves, pushed all over the park, and didnt give Redditch a moment to settle on the ball. We were favourites for the tie, and that worried me that some of the lads might become complacent, but they never let their concentration drop for a minute, and Geoff Harvard's goal was fantastic, a reminder of why so many teams have been looking at him, and why we were so glad he has signed a new long term deal. If we play like that for the rest of the season , I dont see any reason why we cant go up, as teams will start to fear coming to Sixfields. Its a cracking result, and I told the lads as much.”

Match Report #7

Northampton (Fulton 1', Buckley 41', Harvard 44', Boyle 89') 4 – 2 Hinckley (Lewis 18', Bodker 54')

“We made hard work of this game , but full credit to Hinckley, theyre at the top of the table for a reason. The early goal should have settled a few nerves but we took our foot off the gas, and for the next 20 minutes Hinckley dominated. To score twice in 3 minutes before half time gave us a massive boost, but despite a positive atmosphere in the dressing room at half time, we just havent quite clicked at the back yet, and their 2nd goal was a masterclass in bad defending. Im absolutely delighted though for Simon Boyle, his goal at the end secured the win, and its a great feeling to score your first goal for the club. We have to push on from here, thats back to back wins, and were scoring goals. If we can just cut out the lapses in concentration at the back, I think we are well on track to get promotion this season.”
