It does.  Not as well as it could/should do but yes

And even if it does now but not as well as it could/should do, future FM versions will benefit 100% of it, right?

You would hope so yes.

Shame we don't have more i5 processors on the benchmarking thread really to see the difference.  I'd love to see the genuine difference between the two systems that Sebastian mentions above

Hi guys I was wondering if you could help me! I'm looking to buy a new computer to play FM on but I'm pretty shocking when it comes to technology. I don't want to spend very much on it but I obviously understand this will reduce the quality of pc I am buying.

http://www.very.co.uk/lenovo-ideapad-305-intelreg-pentiumreg-8gb-ram-1tb-storage-156-inch-hd-laptop-with-optional-microsoft-office-365-home-blue/1600022376.prd

This seems to have a good amount of RAM and storage but would this be able to run the game? Is there any you would suggest instead?

cheers

It'll run it you will just need to manage your expectations of how many nations you can run.  From what I can tell you can forget the 3D match engine on even the lowest settings although i'll happily stand corrected

i'd prefer this http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/a1-refurbished-acer-aspire-f5-571-39fd-intel-core-i3-5005u-4gb-1tb-windows-a1-nx.ga0ek.001/version.asp at that price point.

or this from the Dell outlet http://outlet.euro.dell.com/Online/SecondaryInventorySearch.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdfh1&l=en&s=dfh&sign=PXhcOSHtr1T4IOw%2fPR7UdV857zbIB9a3e61QGGOc4bXjo1J59tieEA5KcGwkNWylZaNOj1ffDA5aK7o4M%2fQCH4rniXvMWm0a5kqcSjJX01PUPNaB0g%2bhGDMoAsmmaX5wpO9ABoly4UExT7%2bmu75J9XvUpJoHO0V%2bRsZzrxfQM8iDE8xj0sNlhKVuU6Hep2KlAOSPyXMYWapN%2bKttweM3m6liD3PQq%2bsftwPb0pqt%2bU6CbFbx7C48vY6%2fwOV6sI6j

it's a scratch and dent model but if you Google what Dell outlet scratch and dent actually means it tends to be finger print marks etc that you can clean off.

Spoiler

This better illustrates the difference in the processors according to the passmark website

Top one is the Dell, then the Acer aspire, then the Lenovo

It's also worth noting that the i3 models have better graphics

Hi all.

I did post a couple of months ago regarding a new laptop, but haven't had time to purchase one.

My budget is around £1000. Purely just to play FM, which can process quick and mainly able to have a long life, as my old one only managed 3 years.

I was told to wait for the new 7 series i7's. Which I know are now out. Not much knowledge when it comes to these things, so any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Also this one which seems very similar but alot cheaper. Ideally i'd go for the cheapest but is there a reason why its alot cheaper?

The omen has a better graphics card, that said i'd go for the Pavilion myself as i prefer the way it looks and I prefer a bigger screen.

The MSI looks a bargain slightly older graphics card but minimal gains on FM.

It's sold through amazon by SCAN, i'd go direct to them maybe and get this (bigger screen) https://www.scan.co.uk/products/173-msi-gl72-7qf-core-i7-7700hq-2gb-gtx-960m-16gb-ram-128gb-ssd-plus-1tb-hdd-dvdrw-usb-type-c-win-10  I recon it hits the sweet spot of price v features

two very good finds there

Think I'm gonna go for the MSI, just due to the price and graphics aren't an issue to me. Thanks for the feedback mate, much appreciated 👍

My current laptop was from these guys and was also an A1 refurb. I was very pleased with mine. In most cases these refurbs are just returns that haven't even been used, they describe it on their website as this

A1 Refurbished
A1 are open boxed units which have been returned usually due to been unwanted. The units may have at very worst case have very faint minor /non-permanent blemishes. All units then undergo a full 25-point inspection by our experienced tech team ensuring they are in full working order. Once all relevant checks have been complete the units are then securely repacked ready to be resold. Please note although we can’t guarantee that these units are still in their original boxes with all their original accessories we can confirm that on average 85% of our stock is still in its original packaging.

One or two of the guys on this thread in the last few pages have been really pleased with their refurbs   (check @cr_bruce towards the bottom of page 106)

I've heard good things about www.saveonlaptops.co.uk too though, can't go wrong with either IMO.

I really need a new laptop to play Football Manager properly, this is my present laptop, it can run at most 4 leagues and runs very slowly during game time.

ACER E 15 E5-511

Processor - Intel® Pentium ® CPU N3530 2.16GHZ

Installed Memory (RAM) -  8.00 GB

System Type – 64 bit Operating System x64 based processor

WINDOWS 10 HOME

When I first got it I thought it would run modestly well but I was mistaked, I'm guessing the processor is mediocre as it is processing through the game days that is sluggish.

I'd rather keep it below £400 (but haven't really budgeted yet so not sure)

I only use laptop for internet and football manager.

Any suggestions?

Hi Guys,

Any help would be much appreciated. Looking for a laptop mainly for football manager and a bit of uni work. Have a budget of £500 though will go slightly above if required.

I have found these three...

http://www.argos.co.uk/product/6516701?cmpid=GS001&_$ja=tsid:59158|cid:200223050|agid:12488287130|tid:pla-471244006712|crid:66128552330|nw:g|rnd:15186384066691253713|dvc:c|adp:1o4&gclid=CNqkr4u4wtMCFQaVGwodHPcNtw   Only has an i5 processor compared to i7 but does have a graphics card.

Or

https://www.debenhamsplus.com/p/1163082/acer-aspire-e5-575-core-i7-6500u-8gb-1tb-dvd-rw-15.6-inch-windows-10-laptop?refsource=Deadwords&gclid=CJ-Rw9S4wtMCFRPhGwodfAsG4g

This one with an i7 processor but as far as I'm aware no graphics card.

http://www.argos.co.uk/product/6774938?rec=webRespPDP:6559201:alt:CWVTPUBOOT:6774938

Or even this one if it is significantly better than the others...

I am just stabbing in the dark to be honest and any better suggestions would be much appreciated as you guys seem to know what you are talking about!

Cheers

Various budgets there, all significantly better than what you currently have.

It's a big jump to the third one in terms of price I know but it is significantly better than the others and I notice they do a 6 month interest free credit deal too, in terms of what you get for the money it's one of the best recommendations I've made, you'll notice i've also recommended it to the guy above

Full HD screen & great graphics card at that price point, processor blows the other 3 out of the water on all but power saving

Thanks for your help mate. Looks great but a couple of things I'm worried about.

When it says poor battery life how many hours are we talking? If was just using Word for a few hours, because I need it to be portable and have enough to last a day?

There has also been a couple of complaints about '100% disk usage' and error messages coming up regarding it. If I just play fm and use it for general usage will that be a problem for me? Also the fact it doesn't have an SSD seems to crop up a lot? How slow will the start up speed and general use speed be because I will need it to be pretty fast running as I will be doing presentations etc which will need to be opened and available quickly? I do need a proper usable, portable laptop as well as a gaming machine. I know that is a lot of questions I just want to make the right decision! If there is another one nearly as good on the gaming side but also fast with load up speed and usability I would prefer to go for that. Though obviously if this does all this I will go for it. I bow to your superior knowledge.

Thanks for all your help. :)

Okay if you need better battery life go for a processor with a at the end.  Less performance but better battery life.

As for the '100% disk usage' I don't have any personal information regarding this exact model i'm afraid but it looks like you've done your research.  Be aware though that as with all things people are more likely to leave a review if they have a problem.

In terms of an SSD, yes they are preferable but at your price point its all about balancing what you can get and they don't offer any real bonus to FM

Now I know your needs more accurately you'll be better off with something like this

 http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/hp-core-i7-6500u-8gb-256gb-ssd-dvd-rw-15.6-inch-windows-10-professional-lap-x0q13ea/version.asp

Obviously no dedicated graphics card but they are a big battery drain and on-board graphics should be sufficient for FM albeit with low settings

I only had a quick look though, i'll have a better look when i get home but its gonna be tight in terms of price.

I suppose you can turn the power saving settings on for the one i recommended earlier?

@Scfleeds Cheers mate, i'd say the HP is the best I can see at the moment for your needs.  Decent price too.

Edit... Just seen this, http://m.dell.com/mt/www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-15-5567-laptop/pd?oc=cn55717&model_id=inspiron-15-5567-laptop&awc=6733_1493369086_0dfd408e34e613424f224320933b27e5&CID=281125&LID=5567365&DGC=AF&DGSeg=ARB&ACD=2397230930616840

Add to basket then use code SAVE100 to get it for 600

Hope its not too late

The i7 one was only available for 700 so went i5 for 600. Please tell me I did the right thing! Haha

Thanks for your help mate.

Edit- or would it be worth my while paying 100 quid extra for the i7?

I'd say so, obviously the i7 will be a little better but maybe not £100 better

also did you actually put in SAVE100 into the box at the bottom? because the i7 should have been £600

After about 5 years of good service, my laptop is finally, literally, falling to pieces. I didn't really do much research when i got it, and just went for an i5, as they were fairly new at the time. This i5 is a 2410M processor, and works alongside 4Gb RAM. It also has a great feature where it'll cook your knee, another where you can lift up the keyboard to store crumbs and things, and a screen bezel that needs to be cracked back into place before you can close the screen shut. However, i don't like those so much, so it's time to replace.

I use it mostly for internet and FM. Occasional Office work, if i take it away for work, and my daughter's starting to get into Minecraft, but that's about it.

I've noticed this one recommended earlier in the thread, and like the look of it: http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/hewlett-packard-refurbished-hp-15-ay167sa-15.6-intel-core-i5-7200u-2.5ghz-a1-z3c95ea/version.asp

This seems very similar, but £10 more: http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/refurbsihed-hp-pavilion-15-au191sa-15.6-intel-core-i5-7200u-2.5ghz-8gb-1tb-a1-z3d15ea/version.asp

This would be about the top of my budget, but looks a good deal: http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/hewlett-packard-refurbished-hp-15-ay168sa-15.6-intel-core-i7-7500u-2.7ghz-a1-z3c97ea/version.asp

Thoughts?

This would be about the top of my budget, but looks a good deal: http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/hewlett-packard-refurbished-hp-15-ay168sa-15.6-intel-core-i7-7500u-2.7ghz-a1-z3c97ea/version.asp

Thoughts?

This https://uk-store.acer.com/aspire-f-15-notebook-f5-573-silver-3

Full HD screen, SSD drive

use code ASPIREF15 to bring it down from £550 to £467.49

or my advice, stretch your budget to this https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/7240-9067-StormForce-7240-9067_2060056.html?gclid=CL6piO_xytMCFcYp0wodKvwMWw you won't regret it @ £549.97 the CPU is a genuine quad core unlike the other i5's

What does that mean in real terms for FM?  Check the chart in the benchmarking thread, both processors are there and the 6300hq is nearly twice as fast

Here's a rough comparison of the cpu's on http://www.cpubenchmark.net

The most stark thing about that table is that your 2410m is far from obselete really and if your laptop wasn't falling apart i'd say to hold off till you have more cash for the real quality laptops you can get at £800 plus

Also I recommend this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Targus-AWE55EU-Laptop-Cooling-Cooler/dp/B002Q8X3L2/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_147_tr_t_3/258-4813896-4488721?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=VPV0NX0YWTFMGDCM7WA6 for your knees, trust me they'll thank you!

I'd say so, obviously the i7 will be a little better but maybe not £100 better

also did you actually put in SAVE100 into the box at the bottom? because the i7 should have been £600

like this

Thanks @bennytee. Some good recommendations there. I'd set myself an arbitrary limit of £500, and seeing what i could get for that sort of cash. However, the Stormforce is tempting (equivalent spec on Laptops Direct is £120 more), and i could probably use the finance to pay over a few months instead... Bad man, tempting me with shiny things.

Also, that table has made for interesting reading. I always assumed that the processor was just about obsolete, due to it's age. It takes an age to open up most applications and files, freezes regularly, and struggles with multitasking. Maybe it's just been dropped, stood on (by a child) and generally abused a bit too often.

have you tried a fresh windows install?  Maybe get an SSD and install windows fresh?

I did this recently on a friends laptop and the difference was like night and day.

Mind you that Stormforce is a nice bit of kit :D

Are refurb jobs a safe buy?

From laptops direct?

Definitely. I have one myself and it's still going strong 2 years later.

Go back through the last 3/4 pages of this thread, we discuss it in more detail

Brilliant thanks!!  Ordered yesterday!

Seriously good price, I'd be more than happy to recommend to others at that price point.

Get over to the benchmarking thread when it arrives and put it through its paces, the more timings we get the better, cheers

Hi all, looking for some advice. My laptop is now pretty kaput and Im looking for  new one. It will basically be used for coursework, FM, social - no huge gaming.

Looking for a small laptop that i can travel with, ideally 14 inches or smaller. But i want one thats powerful, or at least powerful enough.

Budget around £500, but could stretch. Many thanks for your help :)

Liking the look of this http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/refurbished-lenovo-yoga-510-14isk-142-core-i7-6500u-8gb-256gb-ssd-radeon-r5-a1-80s7007vuk/version.asp

Good i7 and good sized SSD, Full HD screen.  It's avaliable for the same price at Currys but this edges it because of the dedicated graphics card.

Real eye-opener this one, first time i've looked for sub 15 inch laptops, you definitely pay a premium for the portability.

I'm looking to get one myself but i'll probably get an old second hand 12.5 inch ex business laptop.  I'm reluctant to suggest that for yourself though as it can really be hit and miss and no doubt i'll spend a while on the phone enquiring as to the condition of various models and try and bag myself an old workhorse for a bargain price.

@bennytee - just had a look at your recommendation. Looks excellent - I found this one also

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/refurbished-toshiba-satellite-radius-p20w-c-106-12.5-4k-intel-core-i7-6500-a3-pspvve-00100cen/version.asp

£20 more but smaller, is there much difference between them? Thanks for your help.

Very little between them, but the 14 inch one will have slightly better graphics. If the smaller one better suits your needs then go for it.
