deteriorating finances

Recommended Posts

Hi. My finances are deteriorating fast and there's nothing I can do about it.

This is my expenditure:

My biggest outlay was ground renervations (5m to get it up to standard after promotion) and although I'm spending 46,000 a week on wages, I'm 60,000 under budget with that. I'm losing roughly 200,000 a month, so trimming down my wages won't help too much. My biggest outlay is my youth facilities. Just learnt as well that there is no prize money in Spain, so won't be getting any money at the end of the season.

In short, my question is, how do I improve my finances? My squad isn't worth very much so no big sales and given that I'm almost certainly going down at the end of the season (on 6 points after 28 games and and am 25 points from safety with 14 games to play) attendances will certainly fall (averaging 1100 at the moment). So any ideas would be gratefully recieved!

Do you have any players with a decent resale value? Do your players have a Relegation clause in their contracts that will reduce their salary?

On face value it looks like cutting spending on your youth setup is one way to save costs short term.

I think my most expensive player is less than 100k off the top of my head. And as for relegation clauses, a few do (the more recent signings) but many don't as they either refused to sign with one or I haven't renewed their contract since I started.

Just a question, is that team the B team of Athletic Bilbao?

Nope, it's a team I put into the game using the editor. Maybe should have given them a few extra quid in the bank :p

I would suggest taking this hit and reducing the spend for youth facilities (unless you're producing the youth to outweigh the investment, it's not really worth keeping if it means you'll lose your job). The other option is deperately looking for a good parent club that pays you to be a feeder (although you won't get the 2.4m you need to steady the sinking ship).

I've got some youth players that came through last season (I'm in my 2nd season) and doing well. Have 3 or 4 of them on the bench/making odd appearances and they're doing pretty well. Youth is a big part of how I play FM and trying to get a all home grown team, so really don't want to cut back. Have Barca as parent club at the mo, so that's 55k a year, but that's not enough. Will be getting rid of the deadwood at the end of the season, which will raise 100k tops. Fingers crossed the chairman pumps some money in...

Please note my statement had a caveat.

As OP stated their most valuable player is 100k and spending 200k per month on youth, this seems to suggest that currently a step back is needed (although waiting until after the youth intake might be worthwhile since they're still in the first season and might produce better value).

Just had my 2nd youth intake, and there's a decent amount of 4.5/5* players in there. So worth keeping it up I think. My youth player from my intake last season has scored 4 in 4 recently and the others have been getting good ratings, so worth keeping it up I think. Hopefully getting rid of the deadwood will put a little money in the bank and reduce the wages. Just moved back into my ground after the renovations and pulled in a crowd of over 2000 for the first time this season. That, a friendly against Barca (my parent club) and a few more high profile friendlies should help bolster the funds hopefully...

I'd also suggest your grossly overspending on the youth intake. 2 million a year to get 1 player every few years that might one day be worth 10 million definitely isn't worth it imo. If and when you make it to a higher level, you can reconsider.

4.5/5* at your level doesn't equate to top class high value players.

That's a good point. May drop it down a notch to see what effect that has on my finances

3 players called up to international U-19 teams (2 Spain, 1 England), 2 from the most recent youth intake and 1 from last year, and one wanted by a La Liga team. Might be worth keeping after all...

It's natural to lose money on a monthly basis but then to recoup all of your losses at the end of the season through, sponsorships, season tickets, prize money, etc.

Now that you've been promoted I would guess that all of these will go up, in addition to TV money and matchday income through ticket sales, so you just have to ride this out and you'll be fine.

He's about to be relegated again though. This situation feels very unrealistic to me, a club with average gates of 1,000 spending over £2m a year on a youth academy? IMO you've edited a team in with a youth system far in excess of what that team can realistically support, so you can either treat it as an experiment - can you sustain a tiny club through a top class youth academy, or play it more realistically by cutting the youth academy back (notwithstanding the board problem you've now encountered).

Yeah, didn't realise how much the junior coaching really costed, but the board has decided to pump some money in plus have 3 U-19 internationals whilst in the third tier, so will try and ride it out and see what happens...
