When you have to do all these extremes just to get somewhat of a challenge then the game is easy...

It's not an extreme. It's a realistic input into a simulation game. I am not a former professional footballer nor do I have coaching badges. Therefore, if I choose to select those realistic options, I pick a club at the bottom end or start unemployed.

If I wanted to start as Man United and still chose no badges and Sunday league experience, I would struggle. That is literally the difficulty setting people are crying out on this thread for.

Kind of feel SI can't win here. There are in built options to set difficulty levels but people think they are extreme.

The match engine is finally considered realistic by most, yet people are still so desperate to win that they're downloading tactics.

If you want it to be a realistic challenge, play realistically. I want a realistic challenge, so I start at the bottom, build my own tactics, don't look at potential ability, listen to my scouts and my staff, and learn from my mistakes. And lose games.

Sure, after 2,5 years of playing and training some of Watford's good young players, they have turned into really good players. But they are not elite or world-class and there are 10 teams in the Prem that have whole squads of those type of players. I have 4-5 on the verge and the rest 3 star players.

All I'm saying is that compared to FM19 and FM20, the beta is way too easy. Mostly because away teams suck I think.

Ok got you - I misunderstood what you were saying and thought you'd bought in a load of "known" wonderkids.  Things would become quite easy at that point 😂

As I've said before, I'm not far enough into a save to comment really. Interesting to see how others are getting on.

Also, another thing that makes the game too easy is that despite my crazy overachievement and surplus of wonderkids,

Struggling here - maybe I am misunderstanding.  If you're squad is filled with shed loads of wonderkids then are you actually overachieving? Is the issue not that you are able to build a surplus of wonderkids inside 2 seasons with Watford?

Maybe this is all the consequence of high press tactics being vastly overpowered and easily implementable with any kind of players. You can pick the worst team in the lowest division of a country and just click "Higher LOE", "Higher Line of Defense" and "More Urgent pressing". And you will overachieve massively.

Can you though? Again, not read the whole thread back, however the last few examples were Liverpool, Kobenhavn & Rangers. Anyone won the SPL in the first season with a +85 goal difference with Hamilton?

  5. I'll be quite honest, I've not played much of FM21 yet - only 4 competitive games, in fact. I've won three of them, but as a team expected to come third in the league, I am third in the league. I did mess about another team before starting this save, and they were awful, got beaten soundly across a couple of friendly games, including a 3-0 defeat to my under 19s.

I've also not read every post in this thread, but I did read most of the previous one where people said it was too easy which was closed. The vast majority in there who mentioned who they were playing with were using large clubs. There was even someone who said that they were actually finding the game hard, and someone responded basically telling them what tactic to use.

Not sure picking massive clubs with huge transfer budgets, snatching up wonder kids and telling people who are finding things challenging to use a certain tactic works alongside saying the game is too easy. As a long term player using LLM rules, I generally don't find any of the games in this series easy. The only top leagues I've won in 25 years of playing this game are Haiti and Australia. But then I only sign scout recommendations, don't use player search, don't download tactics or training schedules, and don't go near wonder kid shortlists. I also try and keep my transfer activity realistic by signing 4/5 players per season rather than taking  over a conference north club and signing 30 players before a ball is kicked.  I'm not saying everyone is successful because they do these things - I don't believe that's the case. I'm also not having a go at those that don't play the same way as me, by the way. And I am sure there are some examples in this thread of people doing very well playing with much smaller clubs. What I'm saying is that there is an element of challenge in games like this that need to be user defined.

That all being said, I appreciate that a longer period of time with the game may lead me to believe it's too easy. I just honestly think that if the game is played as intended and decisions reflect what you might do in a real situation, it will generally offer more challenge. It's always been that way for me and that's how I expect Fm21 to be to be honest.

And for anyone who says that I must be poor at the game because I haven't got a heaving trophy cabinet, you are no doubt correct - but at least I'm having fun 😁

Well the processor is eight years old probably (EOL) end of life.

Unless you can upgrade the motherboard so you can get a new processor.

RAM is quite slow - would need more details from you in regards to RAM type and motherboard.

I think it would be best to buy a new one from scratch as you'll be replacing all parts, and likely the case anyway.

    What's the budget?

Thanks for the response mate. Processor only been in use for five years at this point, although old.

RAM is Corsair vengeance, which remains on the market at a similar price I paid for it 5 years ago. Motherboard is Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3.

Budget not really a factor, but this one was custom built at about £550 so I would expect to get an updated one for similar, although that did include the ssd which I wouldn't be replacing this time.

I have been looking at 6 core Ryzen 5s or 7s, but am really not convinced on the performance uplift vs price.

Actually wondering if it's worth waiting until EOL and seeing what is available then.

  7. Hi all

Hope I'm ok posting here as my question in desktop upgrade related rather than laptop. I either self build or get custom built every five years or so, and my last one was end of 2015 so I've started looking. However I'm starting to think that there is little point, was just after some opinions to see if I am right.

I only really play FM (and civ now and again) and in my current set up I can run all leagues and am happy with the speed. On FM20 I ran leagues from 75 countries.

    My current set up is;

AMD FX 8350 Black edition (8 cores, 8 threads, 4.0ghz),

    16gb 1600mhz ram

    Nvidia Gtx 740

120gb SSD which only contains windows 10, fm21 and graphics as well as a couple of basic apps (chrome, Spotify, etc). Everything else is stored on a 500gb HDD.

My gut says upgrading at this point would only give me slight returns and not be cheap. Thoughts?

Do we think it could be a reputation issue? Every year I do a Pentagon Challenge - start unemployed, sunday league reputation and zero coaching badges. My first team this year who offered me a job were Portuguese Second Division with 2.5 star reputation. This seems wildly higher than it should be considering my 1/2 star rep and no badges or experience. Media Prediction was 16th and I finished top and won promotion to the top league by 13 points...

Usually my first job is in the pits of some Asian 3rd Division and it's an almighty struggle. It can take 10 years to even play against teams like Porto and Benfica. I am reluctant to believe I've finally become an FM God after playing for 17 years. @Neil Brock - is difficulty/reputation a known issue?

Interesting you post this as I've seen a couple of others mention it mainly in the career updates part of the forum.

However, I started unemployed myself and found that the game was pretty much as expected. I applied for jobs in the lowest division of every country available (running all leagues) except ones which started months later as I wanted to crack on. I was offered jobs in the bottom divisions of Norway, Denmark, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. I wasn't offered jobs in the bottom leagues of Russia, Romania, South Africa and some others that I applied for, and didn't even get interviews in the bottom league of Turkey and Mexico.

Would be interested to know what leagues people have running who are finding this as I didn't find it at all, personally.

This thread has definitely made me realise I need to play more leagues on full detail. Never realised how big a difference it can make.

Interested to see how much it slows me down adding a league a week. I find this to easily be the fastest game so far in the series, although am only a few weeks in & have first window transfers off - but of course full detail won't affect that.

Perhaps I didn't explain it well enough. There's a big difference between the two.

With the full ME simulating a match, you have all these factors involved to simulate a match -

When we talk about the quick sim ME, it's muuuuuch simpler. It looks at squad CA and club rep mainly (there may well be one or two other factors) and calculates a score. I may be over-simplifying it, but I want to try and illustrate just how big a difference it is in terms of the calculations involved. The game is a lot better these days, but remember when you'd have the likes of PSG and Bayern just winning every league title in 30 seasons? That was because they had the highest CA and reputations. With the full match engine, it's much more detailed with tactics, weather, decision making etc all contributing as Neil stated in the link above:

All these factors (IMO) make the simulation of matches far more realistic, but it's also why it slows down processing times so much.

Thanks, @HUNT3R - I think your explanation is fine, and very clear - in fact I think it's me that hasn't been clear!

What I'm trying to understand is what the physical difference is to the player of chosing full detail or otherwise. For example, I am currently running all 119 leagues from 52 nations as playable and am very happy with the game speed. I am managing in the Norwegian third tier having started unemployed. Norway is therefore running on full detail, but no other national league is. I can only scout Norway, and I find it unlikely I will loan players to anyone outside of Norway.

Whilst I appreciate that running say France and Germany at full detail will improve realism on a match by match basis in those leagues due to all the factors posted, I am struggling to see any advantage to me in doing so. Indeed, it is plausible that PSG/Bayern will win 30 league titles regardless of what settings I choose. My understanding is that it's just less likely on full detail. But how would I ever know, as a user, that Lyon or Leverkusen have won the league because of full detail? That's what I meant re. Realism is relative. Hope I'm making sense here because I'm not sure I am 😂

  11. Hi

I've done a quick search on this but the answers weren't clear.  As far as detail level goes, what is the difference between "Full Detail" and "none", which means the quick match engine is used?

I understand that running a league at full detail means the match highlights are viewable, but that's all.  A couple of old posts indicated that Full Detail was more realistic in other ways, but I don't understand what ways?  What, for example, becomes more/less likely if a league is ran on full detail?

  12. @Neil BrockSo a complete reinstall later, my computer has been fine for most of the last 48 hours or so, just doing administrative tasks, getting set up etc.

I even managed three hours on the Beta.  However, as soon as I shut it down, went straight to a BSOD.  Struggling to see how this is unrelated if I'm honest. There was an error message but I didn't write it down in time.  I have now run SFC & it did fix some errors, but having reviewed your previous note and finding no obvious hdd issues, I am now wondering about the RAM.

I will provide any further updates as/when.

Cool. In Norway there is the 4th (possibly 3rd) division as unplayable, but SI confirmed last year this was due to there being reserve teams and the need for reserve players to play games, maybe 21 thinks the same way? Either way this is a massive reason why I won't be starting this challenge until full release.

From their response it looks like things are not working as intended. It may be running similar to Norway (France/Romania are the same too iirc) but it shouldn't be.

Not gonna stop me starting, personally. Not good that it's happening but at the end of the day most teams would consider the manager's future regardless if they went from the third to fourth tier. Should only be the teams who would reasonably expect to be relegated anyway that kept the manager. Plus, shouldn't be a problem after the first season.

  14. Hope you gents all enjoying yourselves, hoping to get up and running tomorrow myself.  I know most of you are now past the first season but thought I would mention for those that aren't that SI have confirmed in the Danish league specific issues thread that relegation to the 3.division in the first season will see you sacked as the game hasn't created the 3.division as playable yet.

As I am awful at the game, hopefully will be fixed and saved game compatible when the full version releases 😳
