Great job securing European football.

Also, what's happening to Rangers is absolutely mental. I don't think I've ever seen anything like this on my saves (maybe apart from Chelsea becoming a yo-yo club in the 2050s on FM16).

It's amazing.

My Scottish family are all Celtic fans, (one Uncle played for them and another was Chief Scout under Billy McNeill), so I will openly admit to them being my preference of the Old Firm, so it was tough to see the dominance of Rangers for so much of the save. It would appear that they are paying the price for this now though. While I think I could recover from the situation they're in quite easily, (although the £525,000 pw loan repayments are tough), I don't think they will find it anywhere near as easy because I think they're still over-paying on wages and their strategy seems muddled. If they weren't aiming to come straight back up, (and they were so far off it that they can't have been), then there is no way that Barkley should have remained at the club, (paying his wage and with his valuation obviously dropping when they were relegated to the Championship).

It will be really interesting to see how they get on this next season and I would just be cutting costs everywhere, (apart from infrastructure), and even playing an U21 squad they should be well capable of challenging for the Championship title. There are obviously issues there over and above financial constraints.

The current manager appears to be playing a 4231DM AM Wide, but they appear to lose every time they play against a 442.

There's obviously more to it than that, but it seemed to be quite distinct.

Problems. Jun 2050

All the way through this save, while we've regularly had problems defending, we've rarely if ever had problems scoring goals. This is something that I've experienced over the last couple of episodes of the game, but it's happened far earlier than I was expecting. In my Portugese and Spanish saves, there came a point when we were dominant domestically and doing very well in Europe, that our central striker played well and contributed well as part of the overall team, but just rarely put the ball in the net. It was about our wide players being so effective that they were scoring on their own from their wide positions and they didn't need to feed the central striker. He started playing a much more withdrawn role, (yes really), despite the fact that he was still playing as an AF(a). It was just the way the tactic worked in the game when we had ultra-effective wide players.

It's far too early for this to be happening in this save, but something is certainly happening. This is how our front 3 are lining up, (both 1st Team and 2nd Team the same), but the goal returns for (41b) Gourley (NIR) (F.Det) * in particular was really poor last season.

40bbb8a00925bf6312833f22966d9e5e.png

(40a) Brass4 (F.Pro) * was the top contributor with 26 goal involvements from the right, and significantly an average rating of 7.26. I obviously have no issues with his performances.

(41b) Gourley (NIR) (F.Det) * scored 23 goals in all competitions last season, (20 in the league), but only managed 11 this season, (only 5 in the league). His shots on target ratio in the Premiership was 55% this season, (in the league), which is close to the other 2 lads he plays with. At this stage I'm not really sure why there has been sucha  drop-off in goals.

(45a) Pobořil (CZE) (Real) * went from 12 goal involvements last season to 10 this season, and I'm fine with that as he's still a young player and just started playing International football too.

b8df8cc2cdafe401c9f7cc2272aefa21.png

Looking at the above info, (and in particular the shots taken), I'm surprised by how few shots we're taking and that would be part of the problem.

(41b) Gourley (NIR) (F.Det) * is 5'9" and has jumping of 4. As a result he wins very few headers and I think this is key.

I've added "whipped crosses" to the instructions and we will see how that works in the coming season, because I don't want to change the front 3 at this stage, (although I haven't done the depth post for this coming season yet so.....).

I'd cash in on the Czech player, and try Currie instead? Curious what's he like now: found this on p.18

 e5b68ac3d313cacd5a26ac12f1e15e02.png

Provided he progressed fairly fine in last 3+ years, I'd expect his finishing/composure to be around 10 or so, but more importantly his physical attributes to be much greater now - jumping 14+, strength 12 or so. He'd be 18 by now, I'm sure he would make a fine addition to your striker force. Not ideal for PF role likely due to quickness and agility, but he does (or should) have solid defensive stats as well - aggression, anticipation, bravery, decisions were fine at 15yrs already. Is he worth anything by now?

How are you handling set pieces, how much did you score last year? From a quick look I see most of your first team squad is fairly short apart from GK and Wilson, I expect a tall player would mean more goals from set pieces as well.

Scottish clubs in Europe. Jun 2050

It's been a few years since I updated this, (I think it was when we 1st got promoted into the Premiership), so let's get it up to date.

We've spent 6 seasons in the Premiership, so let's go back 5 years.

Hibs. 2049/50. This is a mighty impressive campaign when you consider that they were also Premiership Champions this season.

Interesting.

Let's have a look at this in some more detail.

(45a) Pobořil (CZE) (Spirit) * is probably more suited to playing in the SC slot rather than the SLC slot, (and this could be having an influence on scoring opportunities for players in the SC slot), but at the moment I think he's the best available.

8 goals from 20 Premiership appearances is actually decent, and the reason he only made 20 league appearances is partly down to rotation, but also down to him being away on International duty. A goal every 2.5 games from one of the wide attacking positions is actually ok for a mid-table side, and the issue, (if there is one), is that he only contributed 1 assist in league games all season.

The development of (47a) Currie (Bal) 6'1" * PPM is possibly not what I would have liked to have seen, but the reality is that we have lots of decent strikers and he finds himself ranked 10th by CA so it's pretty hard to get him in the team. He's only played U18's football so far, (because there have been others ahead of him in the pecking order), however this season he will play for the U21's, (hopefully), in the 1st half of the season, (where there are at least 9 games), and then in Jan he will go out on loan.

Looking at the above I really can't see a reason to make the suggested change, (but maybe next season).

In terms of physical attributes, it's not really clear-cut either way I'm afraid.

90a897b5625c2b39dbc019410bb792a4.png

I'm not actually sure how we did at set-pieces last season so this will be interesting for me to look at.

In terms of defensive set-pieces, we're particularly poor at defending corners. Look at Falkirk though.  :applause:

Moving on to attacking set-pieces, we're actually looking pretty decent.

Moving away specifically from set-piece goals scored and looking at chances created across the board, we seem to be creating lots of chances but just not taking them.

c4ce448fe3957205e82971c7d87f90ce.png

Our conversion rate of 16% is actually 2nd only to Hibs, and we've scored 76 goals which is 2nd only to Celtic. While I think that we're struggling up front, we're actually scoring lots of goals, (ahead of our position in the league), so we're actually good in front of goal We're just not as good as I'd like us to be. While our strikers are not prolific, we are sharing the goals around well, (particularly in terms of our squad rotation).

I delegate all set-pieces with the exception of allocating my GK's to take pens.

Attacking options. Jun 2050

We've got quite a few attacking options now and in light of the post from @TIR669I thought I would show you them in a little more detail and feel free to give me your thoughts on them.

This is what I've decided upon for this coming season.

(47b) Smith should get first team game time

He's 19, got excellent Finishing, reasonable physicals and remarkably good mentals for his age.

I reckon a full season with the first team and he comes on leaps and bounds

Defensive Height. Jul 2050

I think @TIR669commented recently about our lack of defensive height, but I actually think that although this has certainly been a problem in the past, it's much less so now.

1st Team DLC. (44e) Henry (F.Pro) 6'0" * is now 6'0" and that's ok for me, but I'm not keen on centre-backs shorter than that.
1st Team DC. (46a) Savoury (Real) * DC is 5'11" and he's a converted midfielder remember. I don't mind that because of his ball-playing ability.
1st Team DRC. (50b) Wilson (Unamb) 6'4" ** might only be 15 years old, but he's going straight into the 1st Team and where his 6'4" frame will really help.

2nd Team DLC. (45l) O'Hara (F.Pro) 6'2" * is 6'2" and I think that's plenty big enough.
2nd Team DC. (44h) Lemetti (F.Pro) 6'3" * is 6'3" and I like that.
2nd Team DRC. (38b) Jayes (SCO) 6'4" * is 6'4" and that's a lump.

When you add in that 1st Team WBL (46d) Bentley (AUS)(F.Pro) * is 6'1", (although the other 3 WB's are shorter), I don't think that's too bad at all.

Much better than it used to be anyway.

Scottish Premiership. We led 1-0 in the 1st half when Hibs had a player sent off, but despite having 10 men they fought back to lead 2-1 before we levelled things up and then won it with an injury-time GK goal.

(47b) Smith (Det) * was on the bench for the 1st league game, (but didn't get on).

He's set to play in the U21's and they have 9 competitive games scheduled.

I think as we lose players due to International duty, injury and suspension, (47b) Smith (Det) * will start to be slowly introduced to Senior football.

He's a Poacher so probably most suited to playing through the middle as an AF(a), but actually I look at him, (he's another short striker who's 5'9"), and with decent crossing and good athletic ability I wonder if he might be better suited playing on the right of a 3 up front.

Where would you be playing and instead of whom @turnip

Not necessarily defensive, just overall. Yes of course centrebacks will (or should) be tall, but 2xMCs and 3xSTs have fairly poor jumping reach. But that's just my two cents, been struggling with below-average height forwards that tend to get low ratings, have poor morale etc compared to their taller counterparts, even if they're worse.

You have a lot of attacking talent for sure, imo Gourley and Brass4 are miles ahead of everyone else. Rest of them I'd rank something like this:

S+ - Courts, Donald
S - Smith, Currie, Halkett, Forbes
A - Poboril, Dick
(below ones are irrelevant at this point)
B - Morrison
C - Rodger, Banner
D - Findlay, Warnock
E - Neill, Edwards

But I see you wasn't able to properly manage that many talents which is fully expected, so some were left playing in positions that are not relevant to them (A/MRL), thus wasting CA instead of it going into attributes. That's just how FM works, regen attribute distribution is abysmal in some cases.

Still would be curious to see few of "S" ones on loan for a year and for sure agree that Smith plus my Currie dude should get playing time. Some I'd advise selling as 12m in the bank isn't looking much when a giant offers 10m for any of your top talents, and it would be a shame to lose them, while having at least 5-6 strikers that are below par and pure and simple not needed at all.

No relations at all, (and I think it's a bug). There have been loads and loads and loads of names seen multiple times, but never a family link.

In the most recent intake there was a Tomaszewski, who is either the 3rd or the 4th to come through the Academy, but even with a name like that there has never been a family link shown. I did ask if anyone else had seen family links and the reply I got was that 1 person had, but they were unable to post pictures. I honestly think it's broken in the game because it's ridiculous that I haven't seen any when you consider that until recently all our players were coming from Alloa.

Last night, I checked through the last 3 or 4 classes that have come through my intakes, (most come from a similarly small area (south-west Wales)) and not one had a family member listed in favoured personnel, so I would agree that either this is not working at all or has been set to a similar chance as generating a son (which I'm also surprised I've never seen you do, based on the number of Youth Intakes you generate in your saves).

Scottish Premiership. I'm personally delighted that we're sitting so high after our Europa Conference Qualifying campaign. The only game we lost was against Aberdeen, (one of the current Big 3 with Celtic & Hibs), so to navigate the opening 5 games of the season and only lose once is brilliant. The 2nd Team were playing at weekends while the 1st Team were qualifying in Europe, but now that's over we will revert to the 1st Team playing at the weekend and the 2nd Team playing during the week.

UEFA Europa Conference. What a brilliant set of results this is!  :applause:I was dismayed when I saw that we had drawn Portugese opposition, and then when I saw that we had Leverkusen if we beat them I was sure that our travels in Europe wouldn't last very long. In actual fact we were well worth our wins and if anything could and should have won by more. The 1st Leg against Rio Ave was a tight affair, but we should have finished the tie in 90 mins but we missed a pen and let them off the hook. Thankfully we scored twice in ET and squeezed through to face the Germans. In the 1st Leg against Leverkusen we finished strongly and scored 2 late goals to give us the advantage. In the 2nd Leg we battered them though and they were lucky to get 0. We were comfortably the better side and fully deserved to progress.

e9473ae39014c204145c45af752d3ede.png

The big thing for me isn't just the money and the reputation that we will gain by progressing to the Group stage, but 6 more European matches on top of the 4 we've already played this season will really help with developing our young squad and far from weakening us with a tougher fixture list, if anything I think we will thrive due to the size of our squad.

The other thing to consider of course is that if we can get past Portugese and German opposition, shouldn't we also be looking to progress to the next round when we're playing teams from Turkey(x2), Czech Republic, Belarus, Belgium & Switzerland? Besiktas will obviously be tough nuts to crack, but the others should be easier than Portugese & German opposition shouldn't they?

I'm sure you're probably correct with a lot of this, but of course there is a balance to be had between playing players for what they will do now, and playing them in order to boost their development, for the player that they will one day become.

We have just under £15M in the bank, and what I'm hoping/expecting is that someone will make me an offer for either (41b) Gourley (NIR)(F.Sport)* and/or (40a) Brass4 (F.Pro) *, that is either accepted over my head by El Chieftain, or which I will negotiate/accept myself. We are absolutely a selling club, but at the same time it doesn't make sense to sell them earlier than I have to, and you might have noticed, (not sure if I've included this in any recent posts), but many of them are all on long-term contracts with options to even extend that.

If we just look at strikers only, (so some wide attackers may not be included yet), then have a look at this for the contract expiry and also the options to extend.

3dff6d66f9cc94d4f3709c450ffc931b.png

(40a) Brass4 (F.Pro) *(40o) Banner (F.Pro) *(37i) Morrison (Pro) are the only senior strikers who we don't have an option on, and they are contracted for 3, 3, & 4 years, so I'm really in no rush to sell them either. At 26, 25 & 29 years old respectively, these players are probably due to be replaced soon anyway, (certainly the latter 2), but I really would even be keen to sell (40a) Brass4 (F.Pro) * if we get a big bid for him, (he's valued at £17.5M-£19.5M).

(40a) Brass4 (F.Pro) * has been injured for the start of the season so we haven't seen much of him,

As usual we have shared the goals about, but it's interesting to see what positions have scored what goals at this early stage.

SLC. (45a) Pobořil (CZE) (Spirit) * (2+0) + (48b) Rodger (IRL) (Merc) * (2+2) = 4 goals and 2 assists.
SC. (41b) Gourley (NIR)(F.Sport)** (4+1) + (37i) Morrison (Pro) (4+0) = 8 goals and 1 assist.
SRC. (40o) Banner (F.Pro) * (1+2)(47b) Smith (Det) * (1+0) = 2 goals and 1 assist.

When you consider that our best SRC (40a) Brass4 (F.Pro) * isn't on the list, (because he was injured and hasn't appeared much but has contributed 0 goals + 2 assists), then things look even better. I'm delighted with how we've started.

6d803549bc2c8a3162113d1bb44bf588.png

Although there are some strikers out on loan already, I've taken onboard what you've said and I actually agree with you about more of them going out on loan. The window closes tomorrow so I doubt they will all go, but I've listed (50a) Donald (F.Det) 6'0" *(49b) Courts (Bal) *(48a) Edwards (F.Det) 5'5" *(49a) Forbes (F.Pro)(49c) Halkett (Bal) * & (47a) Currie (Bal) 6'1" * for loan.

ef061661854f0b89c3cb85c3d4ba08d8.png

You're correct about not being able to manage them properly in the U18's. They've been playing a 433 DM wide formation and the only way to stop it is to sack the U18's manager and so far I've just been too lazy to do that. It does need doing though.

With regards to selling players though, I don't really want to sell fringe players at this stage. I want to sell our best strikers for BIG money because they have scored 25+ goals and then replace them with the next player. I'm not sure how realistic that is though.

I think he's better than Morrison, although not as well-rounded. Play him as a DLF(A) and I think his Passing/Vision will increase over time

The problem is though that I've have had the same/similar tactic for a few years now, (real life years), and I mould players to it rather than play them in their preferred position. The idea of playing a striker as a DLF(a) just because that's what suits him, is a big no-no for me. Having said that, I mentioned in a recent post that as we progress and become dominant domestically, we do have a history of the AF(a) in the central SC slot having a problem with his goals drying up and I have used a DLF(a) in that slot, (because it's what sort of happens anyway), but it's not something I want to do at this stage of the save.

When we gain domestic dominance and start battering teams, what happens is that the WB's completely dominate and get quite high up the pitch and this forces the 2x PF(a) inside a little more. Because his space is getting squeezed from both sides, the AF(a) actually drops deeper and links play, (not at all what I was expecting), but I remember looking at the role description and thinking it made sense, (in an attempt to find space).

In any case, you'll be pleased to hear that because (40a) Brass4 (F.Pro) * has been injured, (40o) Banner (F.Pro) * stepped up to the 1st Team and (47b) Smith (Det) * was promoted to the 2nd Team where he made 3 starts.

I actually have had 2 sons in the game, (although none for a while). I had 1 in my San Marino save in FM14, (he was rubbish), and then I had another one at the end of another save and he was rubbish too, (but I can't remember where that was). Haven't had one for ages though.

The family links are definitely not working as intended though. Such a shame because although it's cosmetic, I like things like that.

looking at those strikers, i would sell the ones listed for loan except dick and then loan out the u21's

I've loaned out a few and after listening to @TIR669I will try to get a few more out on loan before the window closes, but rather than just selling young players for their potential, (whether it be real or imagined), I want clubs playing top dollar for our 1st choice strikers in a sellers market and then I just want to replace them with the next player on the list. The idea of selling youngsters doesn't seem sensible at this stage, (especially when we play 3 up front).

In my head I want to sell the following strikers this season, but as soon as I list them I will get lower offers, so instead I want to just let their performances do the talking.

When they go, (with add-on clauses galore), I want to just wish them all the best and then switch the next kid in there, rinse and repeat.

I think we've produced so many strikers that I might have to resort to selling decent prospects who have never played for us, but that reminds me I have to sack the HoYD.

I think this is the only way to make sure they all play the same tactic now. I used to be able to just tick a button, but SI seem intent on making so much stuff far more complicated than it needs to be. I will look again to see if I can dictate the formation without managing everything, but it certainly wasn't possible with a dedicated Manager in charge of each team.

The great sacking of 2050.

Never seen this U21 issue you have. I was always able to delegate both U21/reserve and U19/18 squads, hire coaches etc. Maybe they're not involved in any league so it doesn't allow to hire anyone.

Two things I'd suggest here:

- first get your badges done, its just a button click to get to Pro license & few extra attributes everywhere

- get few feeder teams in lower leagues. I would assume you'd be able to avoid a lot of micromanagement in the summer by just grabbing few levels of U21s that potentially didn't even get any training so far (????!!!!) and mass shipping them off to L1, L2 clubs. That's what I'd do at this point at least.

Can you get a Reserves team from interact with board? Or ask for more U21 coaches there perhaps?

Oct 2050

Scottish Premiership. This appears to be a poor month at 1st glance, but when you take into account that 2 of the 3 losses were mid-week games played by the 2nd Team, it's perhaps not as bad as it appears. Importantly we're 5 points clear of 5th, and our goal difference is surely also worth another point.

The Coach sackings was long overdue.

I'm a bit lost with the U21's and U18's tactics if I'm honest. The workaround I'm currently using is to have sacked the Manager of each and actually kept responsibility to picking the teams myself, but that's actually not what I want to do. I want to delegate the running of the teams, but I want them to play with a certain tactic. It was always possible to do that in the past but I just don't seem able to do that now. Would you mind posting a walkthrough of how you do it please so I can try and wok out what's going wrong here?

9c346c24fb4503a076d03c1862064aaf.png

I've set the tactics of U21's amd U18's to the same as 1st Team, and now when I delegate Team Selection the 1st Team Tactic stays there but we will have to see what happens when we have a game.

1a833f7080fa2a7c6432036718673caf.png

Nope, didn't work. The U18's reverted to a 4231 in their next game. :(

I will ask for my next licence at the end of the season.

I think feeder clubs is a good shout, but I'm not really sure what's going on with the training at the moment. I keep putting it off, but yeah I should be looking for feeders now.

I can't ask for a Reserve side yet.

I also can't ask for any staff for the U21's. (Just 1st Team and U18's).

At this point it might just be a bug.

Because after promotion with my Elgin side into Prem, I got a Reserves team, can appoint staff and set training, but I can't even "pick" a team or select a tactic, and they don't have a training schedule at all. While they play in reserves league, I don't know why as I declined that option in preseason...

And because of this inability to select anything, mr. Cameron here plays his preferred 4-4-2 tactic. Depending on staff responsibilities (i.e. if you have any training, team or individual handled by yourself) you'll be able to change schedules. But nothing regarding tactics. U18 team I have all menus enabled and by default they're using my first team tactic, but I'm able to switch between any 3 of mine OR the U18 manager preferred one. If I take over a different club with a reserves manager, not touching any responsibilities, I can change reserves' tactics to whatever. And if I retire & take over my same team, I can change it again. But by default my team they're all greyed out for example. Likely same in your case..

So might just be a bug? Might be worth checking with SI, although I don't expect anything to happen from it until 2029 or so...

Might have missed it Jimbo but could we have a quick Savoury update? How's he developed into that Libero role?

Strong start to the season!

He's an average defender, but he's just so much better on the ball than our other defenders that it actually works well.

His passing stats are good, but they're not amazing because he makes progressive passes rather than lots of tippy tappy stuff to another defender. The usual pattern is our GK or centre-half passing to him in an advanced central position and then he plays a diag out wide to play a WB into an attacking area for them to deliver the ball into a threatening area.

Dec 2050.

Scottish Premiership. It's been a fantastic month even with the narrow loss away to Aberdeen at the end. The good news though is that we're only 2 points behind Aberdeen and we're 7 points ahead of Ross County in 5th and have a game in hand. I've noticed that Kilmarnock have 3 games in hand on us back in 6th, but they're also 21 points behind so it's less of an issue. There's a huge gap between Ross County in 5th and Kilmarnock in 6th.

Scottish Premiership. 2 more wins, (making it 7 wins from 8 games in the league), moves us up to 3rd. Although we're only 2 points off Celtic & Hibs, they have 3 games and 1 game in hand on us respectively. Even Aberdeen behind us in 4th have a game in hand.

There's a fair bit of both PA and CA there by the looks of it, and I like the Det/Personality at the top of the list, but there's still 3x L.Det lower down + 2x Unamb who also have L.Det, (so 5 negatives in all).

We will just have to see how they develop. The longer I play now the less notice I seem to take of intakes, (other than personalities and positions).

Scottish Premiership. The 2nd Team have been in good form in Europe, and the truth is that we battered Dunfermline but they scored 2 goals and we scored 0 goals.

Scottish Premiership. 2 points from a possible 12 this month is awful, and I think is simply a result of us crashing out of Europe and the accompanying morale hit.

UEFA Europa Conference League. What a way to go out. I felt exhausted after watching this game. They scored 2 goals in the last 10 mins, (the 2nd in the 5th min of injury time to force Extra Time), but then led in ET before we took it to pens.

May 2051

Scottish Premiership. A bit of a strange finish to the season. we earned 2 points from our home games, despite scoring only 2 goals in these games, but then went and scored 4 goals away at Celtic and still came away with a battering.

Hibs won the league with a 6 point margin over Celtic in the end, with Aberdeen a further 5 points behind and the us another 3 points back from then. It means that we were 14 points off the champions, (but 12 points clear of 5th), but when you consider that we dropped 13 points in the last 5 games of the season, we certainly were at least in contention after the split. I think the reasons for our late-season demise are probably partly down to our young squad, but also the exit from Europe on pens will have cost us in terms of morale and momentum.

Yeah we fell away considerably over the last 2 months of the season, but we're playing in Europe again and at this stage that's all we need. Of course I would love us to be Champions and playing in the Champions League, but we're just not there yet.

Squad by CA. The squad by CA shows that although we're much improved, we still have a squad that is hugely skewed in favour of PA over CA. We only have 15 players at the club with 3.0 CA or better, but conversely we have 33 player with at least 4.0 PA. For contrast we have just 3x players with 4.0 CA.

Ouch, harsh end to the season. :(

Yeah, the fixtures are tough at the end of the season when we make the top half of the cut, but the problem was the loss in Europe and it all snowballed from there. :(

Onto next season!

Not the end of the season we would have wanted, but glad to see you back :D

The progress in past few seasons is phenomenal.

Apologies for the little break. Life got busy with just the last month to play, but the wheels had already come off and every time I went to load up I just didn't fancy playing, (and ended up playing Rimworld again).

Am back now, refreshed and ready to go again. In the middle of a my squad depth post, (which takes an age because I have forgotten who some of the fringe players are).

No problem mate :D I totally understand :D  Tbf, I sometimes get that when things are not going my way I find it tough to load a save especially now with youth only in Poland where we struggle every season to stay up in top flight. But if the results go my way I can end up to play through the night sometimes just by saying to myself "just one more game" and when you realise its 6am

I personally really enjoy the updates and checking through the saves that I follow with a coffee in the morning before work has become some sort of a routine for me

I've loved this save so far and don't think the end is anywhere even nearly in sight so don't worry about your morning reading vanishing.

I've got so many threads I need to catch up on but so little time.
