After spending the early months of summer travelling through a few of Europe’s beautiful cities, I was left with little money and unemployment. On my travels through 5 countries I found some young football wannabes trying to make it in the footballing world. I got talking to a few of them and I told them I would see what I could do. Obviously there was little I could do as I wasn’t exactly Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger. I couldn’t just give them a club or snap them up myself, although I could do with a few cleaners round my place. Hell, I wasn’t even a manager of a club so I don’t know what I was thinking.

I got a phone call about a week after I came back from my trip. It was the chief scout at Sheffield United calling. I had seen him at the Speedway track at Owlerton Stadium a couple of times and told him I wanted to get into football some how. I wanted a proper job and not be the guy who cleans the players boots, or collects the balls. I wanted a job on the inside, maybe a coach, scout. I couldn’t become a physio because I would have to go through college or university to get all them qualifications and frankly I couldn’t be bothered. I got talking to George Harrison and asked him to get me a job. A long shot I know but thought I might aswel throw it into the conversation. He said he’ll see what he can do.

A few days later and George rang me again and told me to get my stuff together and get to Bramall Lane. They had a new position open. They needed a new scout and George put my name forward. Told them I had great eyes for potential players and could grab us some of the best youngsters around. Two problems, 1. I had no idea how to find a great player. I wouldn’t know how to find one even if he came up to me and said ’Hi, I’m a great player’ and 2. I thought to myself, Even if I find the so called great players, how could I attract them to Sheffield United. I mean it isn’t the greatest club. Money wasn’t great but they told me that we will make funds available if I find the right player.

My first job and I was already being shipped out to some unknown country. They didn’t tell me where I was going and still didn’t when I got to the airport. I only found out when they gave me my ticket and pointed to the checkout desk. Liechtenstein. That’s where I was heading first. For some unknown reason this club thought I could find some players there, who were they trying to kid. I checked in the wallet they gave me if there was anything else. Another 5 Plane tickets. Where were they planning on sending me? Or was this some kind of initiation that all new staff get?

The other 5 plane tickets I had were to other small countries.. Maybe they wanted the views on the nightlife or the women there. San Marino, Estonia, Luxembourg, Hungary and Cyprus. That’s the other places these ‘players’ were meant to be.

I was met at Check-in by a guy named Kristof Dubski. He escorted me to the departure lounge and wished me farewell. And so I was off on my ‘scouting’ mission.

The Flight took around 5 hours to get me to Liechtenstein. It was around late afternoon when I got here. I got a taxi to the hotel where I was staying and dumped suitcase in my room. I got a few things together and got on my scouting mission.

While I waited at the bus stop to take me to the city centre, I heard a few people talking about some youngsters who were trying to get some scouts to notice them. From what I could here they had some talent but could do with some decent training facilities to help their progress. And from the look of this place they really need it.

Scout Report

1st June

Get to the training ground of the Liechtenstein u21s and have a chat with their coach. He passes on a few names of some up and coming stars. Hopefully they will be real people and not part of the ’initiation’ that Sheffield United are making me do.

Tomorrow I will go in search of my first player: Alan Ward.

2nd June

There was a reported sighting of Mr Ward at the local park playing on the swings with his mates. Hopefully he will still be there or at least playing some form of football. I managed to hide in a near by tree while he and his 4 mates had a kick about in the park.

Brief Player Profile: Alan Ward

18 year old GK, looks quite promising. Got a good pair of hands on him, seems to handle the ball very well. Good reflexes and is very agile. Seems to concentrate well. One thing to be improved is his aerial ability.

Would do well in our reserves for a few season.

3rd June

Next player on my list goes by the name of Lufbra Bantam. Happens to play for a team round here or so I heard. Will have to check him out soon.

Brief Player Profile: Lufbra Bantam

19 year old central defender. Plays for his local side and gets a game every now and again. Seems very determined to do well. Great header of the ball and is strong aswel as agile. Could be one to look out for. Could do with improving his positioning but with his work rate he shouldn’t have much problem in that area for long.

3rd June

Another long day scouting today as I go to my next target. Cheesy Pants. Seems from the gossip I overheard in the bathroom, is that Pants plays for Bantam’s local rivals.

Brief Player Profile: Cheesy Pants

17 year old striker. Seems pretty decent for his age. Could have been a sprinter from what I’ve heard, very pacey and has good acceleration. A team player by looks of it but occasionally is greedy. Great at finishing his shots as he scored several goes in his training matches.

3rd June

One final player that I had to look at. Seems to be held in high regard with the Liechtenstein FA. Already captains the his local side and looks set to achieve big things.

Brief Player Profile: Scott Rankin

18 year old central midfielder. Another pacey player in the Liechtenstein youth setup. Very strong agile. Seems to get stuck in. good header of the ball but lacks the ability to jump well, could hinder his progress. Very good at marking for a midfielder and has a great engine. A young, determined midfielder who is also good off the ball. Definitely one to watch.

Well I guess that is all the great prospects that Liechtenstein has for now. Will have to keep my eye out on them and I reckon they should all get snapped up sooner or later.

Next place to visit is nearby country Luxembourg

(I'll just reply here since you've got the thread going. Don't worry if some players don't have any interested teams. Eventually they will be spotted and signed. Every game I've done their have been a couple who took longer than everyone else, but not too bad at any rate. If they still aren't signed after a year, sign them up for the club you are managing, and then let them move whan an offer comes in.)

I caught the first plane out of Liechtenstein as, quite frankly, the place scared me. I hope I don’t have to go there again any time soon. Got to Luxembourg around 1am, I wasn’t exactly going to go scouting as I didn’t want to see the luxembourgians throwing up in the gutters after a night out. Got to my hotel and went straight to sleep. Zzzzzzzz

Woke up around midday and went to the tourist information desk to find some local sports facilites or if anyone knew where the Luxembourg youth team were at. Was told by the pretty lady behind the desk that it was about a 45 minute bus ride to the Luxembourg FA. Their manager gave me a few names, Their parents must have been high or something when they gave them their names, lets just say they weren’t the most common names.

Scout Report

5th June

First on my hit list was a player by the name of Exar Kun. Meant to be pretty decent. Plays for an up and coming team in the south of Luxembourg.

Brief Player Profile

17 year old striker. Looks alright but plenty of improvement is needed. Very fast and seems to be able to finish well. One thing that might be wrong is that he is a bit too aggressive which could hinder his long term progress.

6th June

Had to travel up to north Luxembourg so took the rest of yesterday off. Tried to see the sights but there sights weren’t to be seen. Next on my list was David Craven. Only plays for his local side but is meant to have a bright future.

Brief Player Profile

17 year old defensive midfielder. One of the best players ive seen so far. Looks like the playmaker of his side and seems to lead with authority. Great fitness, seems to run forever. Great passer of the ball and can strike a mean free kick aswel. Likes to try a few long shots, successful with several of them. Also a team player.

Next on my list was David’s team-mate Stuart Wright. Thought I had his name wrong at first as the rain smudged my writing. And also he turned up late for his teams training session so no wonder I could t find him.

Brief Player Profile

Another striker on my list. Just 17 years of age. Looks to be the worker of the strikers on this team. Very fast and has good fitness. Great finisher and also likes to have a few 35 yard shots. Pretty much off target with most of them.

7th June

My next two players were on the same team again. A Gk and a defender. Meant to have been some trouble between the two though, so il have to note that down.

First up was a player called Dafuge, his parents must be Brazilian with just giving him one name. Strange name whatever anyway.

Brief Player Profile

An 18 year old centre back. Seems to be an old style centre back who likes to get stuck in and isn’t afraid to get a few knocks. Very aggressive. Good header of the ball and seems a decent tackler too. Not one to pick a fight with.

The last player on my Luxembourg trip goes by the name of SouthCoastRed. Another strange one. Gotta love these Luxembourg names. Maybe have to meet up with their parents and take home some of what they were smoking.

Brief Player Profile

19 year old GK. Could do with some more training but seems alright. Great reflexes and handling. One on ones definetly needs works. Looks determined though so im sure he will get better.

And so my scouting trip ends in Luxembourg, A nice place. But hopefully I can go get a sun tan in Cyprus now.

Stayed over at Luxembourg for the night then got the earliest flight to Cyprus. Hopefully it would be a bit warmer over there and I could enjoy myself a bit more. One problem is all the notorious English folk will be all over Cyprus no doubt causing trouble.

Scout report

June 9th

There seemed to be a few youth tournaments on over here in Cyprus while I was here. Hopefully there were some good players I could scout. Heard that there was a few games going on so il try and get a few names off people and get some scouting done on them.

10th June

Tournament gets under way today and it seems theres 2 players here to look out for. First one I found was Mark McInnes. Hopefully he can impress me.

Brief Player Profile

An 18 year old central defender. Looks very promising and seems to be very comfortable with first team football. Already captains the side he plays for. Great tackler and seems to play the man marking game which he does very well. Seems like the heat doesn’t bother him as he has great stamina. Definitely one to look out for.

A few matches had passed when I managed to get a look at another good player. A guy called Powers. Strange name again but seems pretty good.

Brief Player Profile

18 year old central midfielder. Another starlet in the making. These cyprus players seem to play well in the heat as they have good fitness and stamina. Seems to be able to create something out of nothing as he set up a few goals for his team. Great determination and work rate is always good.

12th June

Took a break from scouting yesterday as the heat was too much. The Days tournament was postponed until today so hopefully a few more prospects might come out of the woodwork.

Seems like I have found another player worthy of the Sheffield United shirt. Dan Chisum was his name as he played for his team in the 2nd roun dof the tournament.

Brief Player Profile

17 year old striker, Dan seems like a wonderkid in the making. Very aggressive but seems to be able to control it. Good finisher and likes to try a few long shots every now and again.

Fortunately my next player was on the opposition of Dan Chisum’s team. Andrew Bell was in goal for his team. Did quite well in the 70 minutes he played.

Brief Player Profile

18 year old GK who seems to be able to play with the big boys. A great catcher of the ball and seems to just pluck the ball out of the air from crosses. Very brave which is always good for a keeper. Aggressive too which can help him want the ball more. Reflexes are good and showed good agility moving around the box.

A good scouting mission in Cyprus as I unearthed some good young players. Will travel next to San Marino to see if they have any good youngsters who can boost their FIFA ranking.

I arrived in San Marino in the early hours and was escorted to my hotel by police escort for some reason. Maybe they thought I was some important person but I wasn’t complaining. At least I can have a rest now.

Now there definitely wasn’t much to do here as it was a pretty small place. Must only be an airport, race track and a football pitch. Guess my scouting trip would be pretty short here.

Scout report

June 14th

Even though this country is small. Finding good footballers is like finding a needle in a hay stack. Think im going to struggle finding players here. Il end my search for today.

June 15th

Searching continues. Got in contact with the San Marino FA early this morning and they told me a few places where I can find some good youngsters. There were a few matches going on at their main stadium so I travelled down there.

First player up was a goalkeeper by the name of Miguel Lourenco. Looks like he can be the San Marino goalkeeper for years to come.

Brief Player Profile

18 year old GK who has the world at his feet, or should that be hands? Good aerial ability and is very agile. Good pace for a keeper aswel. Seems to influence the game a lot and could be a future captain for country and club.

Managed to find another player on the same day which was good. Maximo Janz. Another youngster with the hopes of SanMarino resting on his shoulders.

Bried Player Profile

18 year old defensive Midfielder. Likes a physical game as he’s a bit aggressive. Got good pace and acceleration and seems to get around the pitch quite well. Very good with the ball at his feet as well as he likes to dribble.

June 16th

Another day another player. I managed to get 2 more names on my scout list from yesterday. A defender and a striker. First up is Luigi Trulli. Looks quite promising.

Brief Player Profile

17 year old left back. Looks very good from what ive seen. Very fast which is always good for a left back. Very brave so not scared to get stuck in. good work rate and is good at marking.

Also found the striker playing near by and managed to get a quick look at him. Gary toner was his name, and goal scoring was his game, or so that’s what he wants people to believe.

Brief Player Profile

17 year old striker. This guy looks like he can score some goals for San Marino if he gets picked. Fast player and can finish superbly. Likes to dribble every so often but would rather run onto the ball. A team player and also helps to create plays for other members of his team.

That was a tough scouting trip. Seem to have got the players capable of doing a job got Sheffield but we’ll have to see. Next I travel to eastern Europe to Estonia.

Had a rough night getting to Estonia. There weren’t any planes going anywhere near Estonia from San Marino for well, ever. And the national team wasn’t playing them so I couldn’t hitch a ride. Hade to settle for a long coach trip. Took about 3 days non stop to get there. So im abit rough.

Got to a rainy Estonia at around midday. Just chucked my things in the hotel room and went out to stretch my legs. Decided to go down to the Estonian national sports centre and have a look for some players.

Scout Report

June 19th

The setup was alright for a country like this. Im sure they could get some decent players from a place like this. Met the national team manager and he told me of a few players who are on the verge of getting a club and said I was welcome to have a look at them. Told him il come back tomorrow to get a better look.

June 20th

Got back to the sports centre and they had a little match starting. First player to catch my eye was an explosive striker. Went by the name of Adam Scott.

Brief Player Profile

18 year old striker. Looks very promising. Fast striker with an eye for goal. Great dribbler of the ball aswel. Good off the ball and gets into some good scoring positions and shows great composure in front of goal.. Good header of the ball aswel.

A few more matches had played and I didn’t see any good enough players. The next match came on and I saw a player that might do well. Thagas Varivicius.

Brief Player Profile

18 year old central defender. Great tackler of the ball and good at keeping in his position. Aggressive but keeps his cool. Strong at the back and seems more a follower than a leader.

There was a player on Thagas’ opposition who looked useful. Stephen Guy. Definitely could be the next Estonian super star.

Brief Player Profile

18 year old attacking midfielder. First ive seen on my travels and certainly looks good. Tireless midfielder who seems to run forever. Chips in with a few goals mainly from 25 yards out. Great balance. Seems like these Estonians are aggressive and like a tough game.

June 21st

Was told that it was goalkeeper training today so came back to find me a suitable goalkeeper. I found one that could be nurtured into the next Peter Schmeichel, or so I thought anyway. Santa Julemanski. Was his dad Father Christmas I wondered…

Bried Player Profile

18 year old goalkeeper, Santa looks good. Commands his area very well and one on ones are near perfect. His determination to get picked up by a club is showing as he seems to out perform the other keepers.

Think they are the best players from Estonia. Now I have the short journey over to Hungary to try and pick the best youngster from there.

This is supposed to be my last country to visit, whether Sheff Utd have forgot about me I do not know. I havent had contact with them since I left nearly a month ago. Hopefully Hungary will be a nice place and I can have a little holiday here after my scouting has finished as they havent said when I had to be back.

Thought I might aswel get this over and done with so I went out and tried to find me some more players. Saw a few clips on the local news of players and so I went to where they were playing to see if there were any other matches on.

Scout Report

June 23rd

Well they had a few matches on and I saw 5 players that caught my eye. Martin Balogh played extremely well in the time I saw of him.

Brief Player Profile

18 year old left back, good tackler of the ball is always good in a defender and that’s what he had. Good pace to match aswel. Great fitness and good determination. Nice little player.

The striker for the opposition looked pretty decent. Seemed to be the playmaker of the team. Helped his team to a few goals.

Brief Player Profile

18 year old Forward. Looks like he can play on the wing aswel as up front as has great crossing ability. Has great composure in front of goal. Good player

Another striker that I found from Hungary. Tomahawk Jacknufe, Hungary will have a phenomenal strike force in years to come if him and Alegria fulfil their potential.

Bried Player Profile

18 year old striker. Free kick specialist. Great at getting into goal scoring positions and has great work rate. Good at jumping but lacks heading ability. Still one to look out for though.

In the last game of the day I found two more prospects. Both playing for the same tea. The first Rob Fain, who looked pretty good.

Bried Player Profile

19 year old central midfielder. Good passer of the ball and has great work rate. Brave and can create aloof chances for strikers.

Looks like I found the future goalkeeper of Hungary. Agus MacGuyver. Great looking player.

Brief Player Profile

18 year old goalkeeper who looks phenomenal. Has great concentration and composure while in goals. Looks his best at one on ones as he has great pace and acceleration to get out as quick as possible also brave which would give him the upper hand. Got a great throwing arm on him and seems to be able to kick for miles.

Well that concludes my scouting. Lets hope the Sheffield United board still want me. Maybe il stay out here for a little longer

I decided to stay in Hungary for a few more days before I tried to get in contact with Sheffield United. I tried to find a few English pepers to see what was happening over there but I could only find The Sun. Not the greatest but it will do. I quickly flicked through the front, not much seemed to happen so I went to the back page. Not a huge story on the back as it was just about Chelsea buying every player possible. A few pages in and I saw a little clip about Rushden. I scanned the article and saw my name. It was a tad strange to see my name there. Looked like they had offered me the job to take over managing them. With no money to spend and over budget I just laughed it off and decided I wanted to stay at Sheff Utd.

Three pages from the back and I saw the transfer news page. It seems like a host of clubs were trying to snap up some players on free. Mostly the ones I had just scouted. Had I unearthed some gems?

Some Transfer News

Algecrias have made bids for Thagas Variciviius, Rob Fain and Dan Chisum. Whether they will get them will be another matter.

Racing 92 offer a contract to Dan Chisum;

Kerkyra are chasing highly rated youngster Tomahawk jacknife and have reportedly offered him a contract.

Aalen bid for Rob Fain and try to steal himoff Algecrias;

Murcia and Cultural join the chase for Thagas Viriciviius and both offer contracts;

Cultural also offer a contract to San Marino hopeful Gary Toner;

Numancia try to steal 5 frees by bidding for dafuge, Lufbra Bantam, Scott Rankin, Stephen Guy and Adam Scott.

Turkish Delight for Rankin as Fenerbahce offer him a contract;

Girona have offered a contract to Tomahawk Jacknife;

Bantam impresses Saarbrucken scouts and quickly bid for the youngster;

Oberhausen look to get some younger legs in as they try to lure Adam Scott to Germany;

Hungarian youngster Martin Balogh has gained the attention of Aigaleo, the player is said he is tempted by the move;

Elche tempt Adam Scott to spain

Non League German club Pfullendorf bid for Rob Fain

Cartegena try to snap up 2 youngsters with bids for Powers and Tomahawk Jacknife

Apollon L try to persuade Andrew Bell with a lucrative contract;

Augsburg look to Estonia starlet Stephen Guy ro boost their squad.
