Tactics as lively as a morgue

Can somebody help me with chance creation and get the players look like theyve actually seen a game of football before?

These is the tactic im going with, the away one is set to counter.

The game plan comes out as a stagnant mess with wingers opting not to put the ball into the area, but stand there and allow the defender to simply take the ball away from him. When they do put in a cross its usually over everybody's head (maybe hit early crosses shout?).

Loads of blocked shots, but im sure thats through lack of options.

Im getting sick of watching my team hit a break, get to the halfway line and suddenly going off 'waiting for next highlight'.

This side is generally quite good in defence, but its 0-0 after 0-0.

I suspect that what you will see if you watch game, is the classic problem of too many players forward and static. Watch in detail as you get the ball in and around the final 3rd, and look to see if you have 3/4 players stood in a line along the oppositions 18 yard line. You have front 3 plus CM plus WB all on attack (the WB on auto will be assigned attack because that is your strategy).

Add in high pressing with your BWM, he is likely to be far up the pitch as well.

Other thing which will cause some of what you are seeing, I would suggest, is your timewasting being set so low. Players will try to force the game and deliver a cross rather than a reverse pass to build up play. Low time wasting, plus lots of attack duties, attack strategy I think is a bad combination.

I would look to change your striker to DLF(s) and try and get him to drag players out. that should start to get rid of the problem of static players in a line around the box.

I would also increase your time wasting at least a little, to avoid people "forcing the issue" and make them more patient in possession.

Lastly, playing very wide, with 2 wingers (assuming they are set to standard winger wide instructions) is difficult. It means you only have one man in the box, and even with a CM(a) you would expect him to arrive late, or be around the area.

Just a few thoughts :)

I am an amateur at this but looks like you have a rigid style. Wouldn't that force the team to maintain shape and hence be static many times ?

Not sure what attacking is doing for you either. Big fan of balanced and standard/ counter here.

The 4-1-2-2-1 really isn't a formation for two attacking wingers. 2 of your 3 most advanced players are hugging the touchline, leaving the AF too isolated and easy to mark out of the game.

If you want to play with two attacking wingers, you should probably play a 4-4-2... maybe a 4-2-3-1 with an attack-minded AMC. A target man would be ideal.

If you want to stick with your current formation, you should consider using at least one inside forward.

You should also change your philosophy to fluid, as with very generic roles your team needs the creativity from a fluid philosophy. You can learn about these generic and specialist roles in cleons "A yorkshireman, a libero, and no strikers" thread, its in the first post and has been more or less the most useful piece of information to myself personally.

Thanks for the advice.

My front 3 is now IF(a) DLF(s) W(s)

Im going to check the target man box and put the DLF as the focal point... put and end focus there.

hi im still new to this tactics logic, so please correct me if Im wrong

W(s) is to get pass his marker and hit an early cross, DLF(s) is in drop deep into space, and the IF(a) cuts inside late in the final third.

I imagine the cross will be deep not near the goal, and the DLF(s) still have to hold the ball until the IF(a) arrive in the box, or wait the MC's to get forward. It wont be much of a threat coz the opposition defence is pretty much in a good defending position no one draws them out of position

but if we change the W to attack duty he will hug touch line cross byline this could draw the opp defence, and by that time the DLF(s) and the IF (change to support duty to balance the formation) could be in a much more threatening position, and the W(a) have more option to cross

Like I said Im still learning this so please correct me if Im wrong

BEST!

Your symptoms look familiar. Which leads me to the question of what is your squads tactics familiarity like? I used to end up with similar problems for the first month or two of the season until I read Cleon's excellent thread on how he approaches pre-season: http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php/348337-Approaching-Pre-Season-My-take-On-It For what it's worth, I try to replicate that as closely as possible now that I've seen the difference it makes, although I let the assistant deal with actually playing the friendlies (takes me long enough to play a season without adding another 10 matches...).

  • 2 weeks later...

everton_zps82b25112.jpg

After reading and reading and reading some more, and of course, the tips ive taken from this and other threads, this is the tactic I have come up with.

Its serving me well at the minute after a slow start to the league, it can get a fair bit of possession and, although concedes 1 or 2 goals, is sturdy going forward.

Thanks for all the help.

Also, Inverting The Pyramid is a fascinating read for anybody who hasn't yet read it.
