(Liga I) Dinamo: Dănciulescu (6) Rapid Buc. 4-1 Astra (Liga I) Astra: Curelea (pen 61) Rapid: Surdu (4, 76), Milisavljevic (23), Grigore (pen 73) Uploaded with ImageShack.us We started off at home to Braşov in what I hoped would be easy, it seemed that way as we were 1-0 up and cruising for the majority of the game, before an absolutely crazy late goal out of nothing robbed us of the three points. We recovered though with an incredible performance at Chiajna where we got 4 goals and a clean sheet. What followed were 2 very tough fixtures and unsurprisingly we lost them both, Rapid especially giving us a beating. I hope so. 10 - Seto finds Fatai who turns and shoots but Nuno Claro makes a great save. 11 - Măţels corner is headed away as far as Maranhao who heads it back, but it is wide. 15 - GOAL! Cluj score off a long throw, Maftei hurls it into the area and Rada heads it in. 24 - Martinez is booked for sliding in on Maranhao. 28 - Vass is booked for tripping Fatai. 31 - Măţel is upended by Valente, yellow card. 45+2 - Half time We haven't been that bad, but a simple long throw means we are behind at the break, we need to keep trying if we want something out of this. 48 - GOAL! Maranhao sends a perfect ball into the box which Fatai can bring down and finish, Astra level! 49 - Astra replace Ezequias with Ben Djemia and Cluj bring on Mureşan for Luis Alberto. 55 - Rise is off and Kapetanos replaces him. 57 - GOAL! Diogo Valentes cross falls loose and Kello should come out for it but for some reason lets Rui Pedro get to it and he scores, what happened there? Oh well, another defeat but we put up a fight against Cluj at least. We won again at home to Gloria Bistriţa, it was a lot more comfortable and I'm satisfied with the way we ended going into the Winter Break. Avoid relegation? We could still get into Europe! Keep it up Thanks, that pre-season prediction was well off though because we have plenty of players that would make it for teams like Cluj, Rapid and Steaua. A very impressive 3-0 win against Red Star kicked us off, we unsurprisingly lost to River but didn't play too badly, got a bit lucky in our last game to beat lower league FC Maramureş, but the team, especially Fatai showed that we can score goals, and often. A consolation goal for the home side, Postolache breaks clear down the right and his cross is scrambled in by Neguţ 39 - Junior Maranhao sends a ball over the top for Berthé, Apostol can't deal with it but Berthés shot is saved by the keeper. 43 - GOAL! Mihalache gives it to Măţel who expertly skins his marker, he has a tight angle but manages to score, 4-1! 45+2 - Half time We've had an incredible half, we really have dominated here and the strikers have been on top form, a huge morale boost to the team if we can add to it. 45 - Both sides make half time subs, Sibiu replace Străuţ and Mărginean with Mănişor and Hidişan. Bărboianu is suspended as well so what should have been an easy 3 points may not be as easy as we hoped. 7 - GOAL! Maranhao with an immaculate pass to find the run of Curelea and the keeper is in no mans land as he has a simple finish. 14 - GOAL! Măţel finds Ferfelea who absolutely smashes it in off the underside of the bar. 27 - Mazilu with a clever ball to Ferfelea but this time the keeper saves it. 31 - GOAL! Viitorul are back in it, Păcuraru comes forward from centre back to play a great ball for left back Toşca who finishes it off. 32 - And the goalscorer Toşca is immediately replaced by Bălaşa. 45 - Constantinescu is now on for Buta. 45+1 - Half time We did well to go 2 up but I'm disappointed that we've let them back in it, I'm hopeful the goal was a blip and we can kill the game off in the second half. 57 - Larie is now on for Lazăr 65 - GOAL! Mazilu gets into the area and unselfishly centres it for Curelea to blast home for his second. 87 - Onicaş goes for goal from distance and Kello gets down well to save. 88 - GOAL! Mihalache finds Mazilu in way too much space in the area, he turns and finds the net for a debut goal, he's earned it! 89 - 2 of the scorers, Ferfelea and Curelea make way for Distéfano and Budescu. 90+2 - Full time It turned out to be a routine victory in the end, with our attack without Fatai putting in very impressive performances. We recovered away to bottom of the table Iaşi, but we weren't very convincing, allowing them to recover from 3-0 down to 3-2. A very anger driven 3-1 defeat to Ceahlăul did us no favours but I was very happy with our 4-1 win against Viitorul on the 31st, a very strong performance even without the presence of Fatai. Yeah, the Bucharest teams and Cluj are looking very strong, we might have a chance of overtaking Vaslui but I don't see us finishing any higher than 5th. Măţels corner is met by Ben Youssef, the keeper saves but Melinte scrambles in the rebound for Astra. 40 - Ben Djemia comes on to replace Ezequias. 45+3 - Half time It was a nightmare start but we recovered well to be level at the half time break, I expect a solid 2nd half performance. 51 - Unguruşans cross finds Grigorie completely unmarked but his header is somehow tipped over by Kello. 56 - Boutadjine has picked up a knock and Băcilă comes on to replace him. 57 - Vlad upends Bărboianu and gets a yellow card. 61 - GOAL! A great cross by Măţel finds Curelea who volleys it in to give Astra the lead. 69 - Măţel finds Bărboianu in the box and he shoots but it hits the post and comes out. 77 - The ref accuses Băcilă of a dive and hands him a yellow card. 84 - A loose pass by Ferfelea gives it to Voiculeţ who slips in Grigorie whose effort is unlucky to hit the top of the cross-bar. 89 - Unguruşan is now replaced by Pleaşcă 90+2 - Nistor to Grigorie who turns and shoots but hits it wide, he may have scored but he has missed a lot of chances today. 90+3 - Full time A very good three points that might be very important come the end of the season, gives us a bit of breathing space ahead of Pandurii. This time U Cluj are level, Alex dos Santos finding Piţurcă who rounds Kello before scoring. 89 - Bournal and Mihalache now come on, replacing Măţel and Bărboianu. 90+5 - GOAL! Incredible late drama, Curelea picks out a great ball for Mazilu who keeps his composure to slam home his 2nd and surely win it! 90+5 - Ferfelea has picked up a knock and is replaced by Distéfano 90+8 - Full time Wow, how lucky are we, a 95th minute winner from Mazilu spares us the embarrassment of dropping points here, we should have wrapped it up earlier. Bad news is that Ferfelea twisted his knee and will be out for a month . Maranhao sends in a cross from the left, Mazilu slides in, it's saved but Curelea buries the rebound. 66 - PENALTY! Turnu Severin could retake the lead, the ref spots a foul by Seto after a corner and it's a pen! 66 - SAVED! Ologus penalty is well saved by Kello who guessed right, terrific work by the Astra keeper. 68 - GOAL! It is in this time for the away team, Golić is allowed to walk into the box and scores a simple finish. 73 - GOAL! Măţel floats in the cross and Curelea has a simple header in, is there a winner here? 74 - Vancea now replaces Apostu. 78 - Bălău is now replaced by Buleică. 82 - Maranhao shoots from distance but it's easy for Marinescu. 82 - GOAL! An incredible error by the keeper may have gifted the match to Astra! A poor clearance by Marinescu falls to Mazilu while he is well out of his goal but credit to Mazilu his first time finish is perfect. 84 - Bournal is now brought on in place of Distéfano. 88 - GOAL! Talk about a super sub! Mazilu slips in Bournal who sends it out of the reach of the keeper, his first of the season and surely the clincher! 89 - Giurgiu is on for Vukadinovic now. 90+2 - Full time I'd imagine an incredible game for the neutral, defensively I'm far from happy but our devastating attack won us this game and I'm delighted we've picked up 3 points despite playing poorly. We started off against Pandurii, doing well to recover from an early setback to win the match. We then faced rivals Petrolul where we picked up a pretty comfortable 1-0 win. Mazilu was the late hero as his 96th minute winner against U Cluj gave us an unlikely 3 points. More late drama followed in what should have been an easy win over Turnu Severin, the away side took the lead twice before we finally woke up and sealed the win, while we could have been better in some of our matches, I'm delighted that we got 12 out of 12 points and the main man to thank has to be Curelea, he had to step up in the absence of Fatai and he did, scoring 4 in 4 games this month. The bad news is we are still 5th! While we've been picking up points, so have everyone else, we have reduced the gap to Cluj to just 2 points but in the rest of the season we have some very tough matches so a top 4 place and a place in Europe is still unlikely. Băjenarus cross is spilt by Kello, causing mayhem in the area and it eventually goes in off Melinte for an own goal. 45+1 - Half time I can't hide the fact I'm very disappointed with the goal we let in as we should have dealt with it and I hope we can find the lead again, great start for Fatai though, encouraging to see him quickly back in the goals. 45 - Filip replaces Inkango at half time. 68 - GOAL! Filip finds Paraschiv who turns and shoots, Kello is unable to save it and Astra fall behind. 77 - Fatai pushes Ilie and gets himself a yellow card. 77 - Fatai is then immediately replaced by Mazilu. 79 - GOAL! Astra equalise, they break from a free-kick and Măţel sends in a good cross for Curelea to head in. 80 - Sârghi is replaced by Perendija. 85 - Punosevac makes way for Radu. 85 - Paraschiv gets to the edge of the box and shoots but Kello makes the save to keep it at 2-2. 90+1 - The ball falls to Neagu from distance but he volleys it well wide. 90+2 - Full time Of course it is disappointing to have only picked up a point in one of the matches left we should be winning but our performance only merited a point at most anyway. Maranhaos cross is brought down by Bărboianu who cuts inside but is brought down by Sălăgeanu and it's a pen. 5 - GOAL! Curelea beats the keeper for his 20th league goal of the season, 1-0 Astra. 26 - Celeban backs into Fatai and earns a yellow card. 32 - GOAL! Măţel plays a good ball for Bărboianu who finds the far corner to double Astras lead. 36 - Caue breaks into the box and shoots, hits the post, it rebounds for Niculae but Kello saves, somehow still 2-0. 38 - Caue goes for glory from distance but he's hit it over. 45+1 - Half time A great half for us, never would have imagined us 2-0 up, I really hope we can hang on to this. 45 - Temwanjera is on at half time for Politevich. 57 - Stanciu is booked for upending Maranhao. 59 - GOAL! Măţels corner is headed away as far as Distéfano who hits it on the volley and Coman makes a top save. The ball comes back to Măţel who sends in a cross which Ben Youssef heads in to make it 3! 60 - Milanov is replaced now by Cânu. 71 - Davide for Stanciu. 75 - GOAL! Sălăgeanu sends in a cross from the left which Temwanjera volleys in, surely a consolation. 77 - Distéfano makes way for Bournal. 90 - Melinte plays a terrible pass straight to Temwanjera who quickly plays in Niculae but his effort is well saved by Kello. 90+2 - Full time An incredible result here, one to be proud of, perhaps a bit harsh on Vaslui but we did really well to win and news flying in that Cluj lost, which takes us above them in the table to 4th! Fatai slots in Distéfano who puts in an accurate finish to give Astra the lead. 58 - A terrific attempt from a free kick by Maranhao hits the bar and comes back out. 59 - Batin is now on for Iulian Popa. 65 - Străuţ is now on the field, replacing Lazăr. 77 - Dorinel Popa is booked for upending Maranhao. 88 - Bournal and Mihalache are now on, replacing Măţel and Bărboianu. 90+3 - Full time A 3 points that was very important for us to get, we are now a good way ahead of Cluj and may find ourselves in the Europa League next season! However, the offside flag has denied him. 20 - Serediuc trips Maranhao and gets a yellow card. 24 - Fatai gets to the edge of the box and shoots but it goes wide. 26 - GOAL! Maxims corner is flicked on by Simion, Kello saves but it bounces off Melinte and in, yet another own goal for him this month. 37 - GOAL! Măţels corner is headed in by Fatai and Astra are level. 39 - Maranhao goes for it from the free-kick and hits the bar! He has been really unlucky with efforts like that this season. 40 - Chiţu shoves Bărboianu and gets himself a yellow card. 45+1 - Half time Level at the break but if we keep up our current pressure we will win this one, keep going lads! 56 - Melinte is booked for tripping Wellington. 60 - GOAL! And it's there for Astra, Fatai plays the ball for Curelea and everyone in the ground had the feeling he would score. 2-1! 72 - GOAL! Simion slots in Wellington who finishes it off and it's 2-2. 78 - GOAL! Ferfelea makes a great run into the box which is well spotted by Curelea and on his return, bags the goal that gives Astra the lead. Ghionea is furious there was no offside but it stands 80 - Zmeu is on now for Reinaldo. 86 - GOAL! Fatai finds a good ball for Curelea who goes for it, the keeper makes a great save but only to the feet of Fatai who scores the rebound, surely that's it. 87 - Distéfano and Mihalache are now on and it's Măţel and Ferfelea who are replaced. 90+1 - Full time An incredible game, and we've got the result, again it was our deadly offence that won us three points, our deadly trio were united once again and it showed. Now if Cluj don't win then we will be in Europe next season. Oh and we are now up to 3rd due to Dinamo also dropping points! Further news that Dinamo have lost, which means that as long as we avoid defeat against them next match, we are in the Europa League! Astra have qualified for the Europa League!!!! But is this the end of an epic season for Astra? Steaua have also suffered a home defeat to U Cluj, leaving them and Rapid on 65 points each and Astra on 62, it's a long shot as Astra face both Dinamo and Rapid but could they snatch the title??? Astra are right back in it, Maranhao with the cross from the left, met with a Fatai diving header, it hits the post but he manages to force in the rebound. 85 - GOAL! And that... may have just sealed 3rd place for Astra, Curelea with a great ball for Fatai whose drilled effort beats the keeper and levels things up! 86 - Ţucudean is on to replace Grigore. 90+1 - Bărboianu hits one from distance but it is an easy save. 90+2 - Full time Wow, we actually managed it, full credit to the team for that 2nd half performance and we are now definitely in the top 3 clubs of Romania!!! That means Astra will see Europa League football for the first time in their history, all in a seasons work . Let's go through the month though, it all begun at home to Oţelul where we came right out of the blocks before the away side came back, Curelea grabbed us a point but I can't help but feel we should have won. Especially because we had a tough trip to Vaslui next but we put in a great performance to triumph 3-1 and give us some momentum. We got a not pretty but important 1-0 win over Braşov. Then came the thriller against Chiajna, we fell behind to Melintes 2nd OG of the month and even though we pulled it back to 2-1 to us, their equaliser made me think our European hopes were over but Ferfelea and Fatais goals gave us a 4-2 win. News that Cluj had lost meant we were guaranteed a Europa League spot but we went one better, finishing 3rd after a great come back from 2-0 down to Dinamo to end at 2-2. Not sure how Gaz Metan made the Europa League though?? Transfer It filled me with great sadness but I've made the decision to sell Alexandru Măţel to Vitesse for £2M, the club could really use the money and I was thinking of Măţels career, the Dutch side have given him a huge bump in wages, he now earns £15K a week, he won't miss out on Europe either as Vitesse qualified for the Europa League, we at Astra wish him all the best.
