Review:

A good couple of months for us in the league as we win 4 out of 4 at home including wins over Arsenal and Man Utd. Not so good away from home as we lost 2 of 3 but those defeats were to Man City and Tottenham whilst we beat Birmingham comfortably. A good start in the Europa League group as well with us and Schalke sitting pretty at the top with 7 points from our 3 games and looking good to progress to the knockout rounds. Dissapointed to go out in the League Cup to West Brom but uiltimately I played a reserve side and the league and Europe are far bigger priorities for us at this time.

Review:

A good couple of months sees us maintain our decent league form and keep up the push for a top 4 finish. Our home form is particularly pleasing and we are turning the Valley into a bit of a fortress at the moment. We end 2016 in good form with 3 wins in a row and 7 in our last 9 matches. In Europe we have also kept up our progress with 7 points from our 3 matches that saw us top the group and progress to the knockout stages. In the 1st round we will take on Dutch side FC Twente with either Dortmund or Zenit waiting in the 2nd round should we progress. Meanwhile in the Fa Cup we have a home draw against Championship Ipswich. There is some bad news though as AC Milan have put in a £20m bid for striker Gabriel Mesa which meets the release clause in his contract. We have offered the young Argentine forward a new deal that would make him our highest paid player but it remains to be seen whether he decides to stay or go. If he does leave i'm confident we can still get a top 4 finish but our hopes of the title will go from slim to almost impossible.

Review:

A really good couple of months from an attacking perspective. Defensively though we look very fragile at times. Only 2 clean sheets all month shows why we probably drew a game or 2 more than I would have liked. In the league though we keep up the pressure on the Manchester sides and we are looking good to improve on last year's 6th placed finish. In the Fa Cup after seeing off Ipswich we won an absoloute classic against United where both teams gave up on defending and went all out attack. In europe a good away win in Holland gave us a great chance to progress and despite a nervy time in the middle of the game we eventually came home reasonably comfortable winners, we will now take on Dortmund in the 2nd round. In the Kent Cup the reserve/youth side I picked let me down badly and we were dumped out by Margate of the Blue Square South.

In transfer news I bolstered our backline in January with the addition of 17 year old centre back Simone Marzorati from Parma for £1.9m. Marzorati will compete with Michael Morrison this year for the 1st backup spot and hopefully develop into the player we think he can become over the next couple of years.

Review:

With the season coming to an end we find ourselves with the unlikely aim of winning 3 trophies. In reality the league is beyond us as Man Utd's form recently has been simply devestating. 2nd place though is now our aim; games are coming thick and fast though and our final 6 games will be played over just 16 days a brutal run that will test our squad to its limits. If we overturn the 3-2 deficit to Liverpool that will suddenly be 7 games as we take on either Werden Bremen or our old foes Schalke in the Europa League final. It may only have been a Nottm Forest side we had beaten 5 nil only a little while earlier but our Fa Cup semi final victory was particularly pleasing as we made sure we were not eliminated at the semi stage for the 4th year running. In the final we will take on Arsenal.

Review:

2 cup final wins; were a great way to end the season. Our squad though was pretty tired by the end of the season and the decision to experiment in the final league game backfired spectacularly. With 2nd place already wrapped up though the result was meaningless.

League looking a bit distant now.

United were on fire; at one stage they won 10 in a row and we just couldn't keep up. The amount of games we had to play really started to take its toll as well. Playing extra time and replays in the Fa cup combined with the extra European games hurt us. United were out of all other cups by the middle of March and could concentrate on the league. It shows me that I need to bring in a couple more players to improve the depth. Some of the young players are developing quickly and the gap between us is closing but I think we still need some new faces to help us.

2016/17 Season Round Up

2016/17 Winners

Premier League - Man Utd

Fa Cup - Charlton

League Cup - Man Utd

Champions League - Lyon

Europa League - Charlton

Goalkeepers

Michal Turna continued his development between the sticks. He is getting better and better and in 3 or 4 years time I truly think if he continues to develop like he is he could be in the top 5 Goalkeepers in the world.

Defenders

The way we play means we are never going to keep 30 clean sheets a season but the defense did what they needed to on the whole. Rainer Fuchsenthaler continues to hold down the right back spot and make it his own. In the heart of the defense Jordan Cousins and Daniele Rugani were good and are building a good partnership. Simone Marzorati should contribute more next season as he starts to develop. At left back Jose Cristovao is now a regular in the Portugese squad and there aren't to many young left backs in the world better than him at this moment.

Midfielders

The heart of the midfield was dominated by the performances of Tomas Podstawski and Vadis Odjidja; we need more depth though in the centre of the park. Dale Stephens is out of contract and i'll probably let him go whilst Milan Smiljanic only has 1 year left on his deal. The attacking 3 of Marcel Risse, Evgeny Saitov and Mojtaba Asghari were again superb and Scott Wagstaff and Vaclav Cerny provided decent performances when called upon.

Forwards

Gabriel Mesa was the star of the show scoring almost a goal a game and attracting the interest of Europe's biggest sides. Now an Argentinian international he can only get better; the longer we keep him though the more chance we have of winning football's biggest prizes. Hugo Fernandez fortunately is a ready made replacement for Mesa and had a decent year.

Youth Prospects

After trying to get the facilities upgraded for the last 5 years they are now reaching the level I want and we are finally starting to see the rewards. Young winger Jamie Mills who has spent the past 2 years out on loan could be ready to push for a first team role whilst 16 year old Robert Ward is the best prospect we have had come through in my time here.

Finances/Reputation

The club made a very healthy profit of £23m for the season and moved up to 28th in the richest clubs in the world list just behind Malaga and ahead of Rangers. Our Reputation has also been boosted over the past year and we now have the 8th best reputation in England while our European ranking sees us climb to 37th.

Not a bad pair of trophies. Going for the League now?

That's going to be the aim next season. I'm going to play reserve teams in the Fa & League cups. I'll try and qualify out of the group in the Champions League just to improve our European ranking if nothing else and if we can make it to the knockout rounds i'll be happy. The league has to be the number 1 priority though.

2017/18 Season Preview

Transfers In

Remy Killian (MC) - £1.5m - Monaco

Benedikt Jahn (AMC) - Free - Hertha Berlin

Andis Reis (AML) - Free - Schalke

Transfers Out

Michael Morrison - Released, Contract Expired

Dale Stephens - Released, Contract Expired

Ibrahima Traore - Free - Siena, End of Contract

Greg Cunningham - £1m - Cardiff

We concentrated on adding depth to the midfield during the transfer window as we signed 19 year old Remy Killian from Monaco who will hopefully develop into our ball winning midfielder in the middle of the park. 18 year old Benedikt Jahn will add depth behind the unfortunately to often injured Mojtaba Asghari whilst fellow 18 year old Andis Reis is a promising left winger who we could not turn down the opportunity to sign when he left Schalke.

Dale Stephens and Michael Morrison leaving were both sad moments but they are not going to take us any further and although there time at the club will always be remembered we had to move on. Ibrahima Traore had not figured for us much last season and with the emergence of young striker Robert Ward I felt I could let him leave. Greg Cunningham had slipped to 3rd choice left back and to get a £1m for him was to good to turn down.

Board Expectations

Premier League: Europa League Qualification

Fa Cup: Quarter Final

League Cup: Not Important

Kent Cup: Not Important

Champions League: Group Stage

Community Shield: Not Important

European Super Cup: Not Important

Media Prediction: 6th

Title Odds: 16/1 - 5th Favourites

This season our focus is the League. The Fa and League cup will be a chance for our young and squad players to get some action. Whilst I will be looking to try and get out of the Group Stage of the Champions League.

Pre Season

Guildford 0-14 Charlton

Portland 2-4 Charlton

San Jose 0-3 Charlton

Chicago 1-1 Charlton

After forming a link with Portland of the MLS we agreed to go on a tour of the U.S where we played 3 matches. We concluded our pre season with the traditional curtain raiser; the Community Shield.

Charlton 2-1 Man Utd

Cha: Ward 67, Wagstaff 85

Man: Costa 34

A good win sees us lift the trophy in a game we should have wrapped up earlier. In the end Nani's sending off 12 minutes from time turned the game even more in our favour and we won the game late on avoiding the dreaded penalty shoot out.

Review:

A good start in the league as we won 5 out of 5. The 1st game against Cardiff pretty much summed up last season. Fortunately since then our defense has played a lot better. In the League cup we played a young side with 9 of the 11 starters 21 or younger and 6 of the 7 subs including having 3 16 year olds in the squad with 1 of them starting. It was no real surprise then when we lost although a few of the young players can hold their heads up high after decent performances.

In Europe we have a tough draw and started in the worst possible way with defeat at home to Madrid. We really should have got something from the game though as we had more possession, more shots, a goal disallowed and a decent penalty shout turned down. The other 2 sides in the group are French Ligue 1 runners up Bordeaux and our old foes from the Europa League Werder Bremen. Our next match is at Bremen and is almost already a can't lose game if we hope to progress.

A good couple of months sees us maintain our impressive start to the season. With 10 wins from our 12 games so far things are going pretty well. In Europe with 5 games gone we head into our final game at home to Werder Bremen needing a draw to guarantee a spot in the knockout stages. If we lose then a Bordeaux win against Real Madrid who have so far won 5 out of 5 would see them progress.

Review:

A couple of months of mixed fortunes as we lost twice in the league had a whole bunch of injuries suffered and shock cup exit. On the plus side we are 6 points clear at the top and we made progress in the Champions League. The injuries we suffered over the past 2 months took their toll on us especially in the middle of December as they were long term injuries. Gabriel Mesa (4 months, Torn Hamstring Muscle), Jose Cristovao (3 Months, Torn Calf Muscle), Simone Marzorati (7 Months, Broken Leg), Vadis Odjidja (2 Months, Sprained Ankle). Hugo Fernandez has stepped in well to replace Mesa but we are missing the Argentine forwards goal scoring ability.

In Europe we progressed after getting the draw we needed against Werder Bremen thanks to a late goal. In the end even if we lost it wouldn't have made a difierence as Bordeaux lost 4-0 at home to Madrid. In the 1st knockout round we have been given a difficult tie against Barcelona. In the Fa Cup our reserve side could only draw at home to Colchester before being knocked out by the League 2 side in the replay.

Our only activity of the transfer window was completing the signings of 2 players we had agreed to sign about 18 months earlier as 18 year old Russians Oleg Zakharov (DRL) and Pavel Yefremov (ST) joined us for £6k each from Zenit & Krasnador respectively. Zakharov was injured when he joined and then played less than half an hour on his 1st appearance for the reserves before being injured again. Yefremov meanwhile has already made a couple of subtitute appearances and will be 2nd choice striker whilst Mesa is still injured.

Review:

A great couple of months sees us lead the table by 4 points with 6 games to go. With 3 games at home and 3 games away we are not home and dry yet with 9th placed Bolton the lowest side we will face. In Europe we grabbed a superb win in Barcelona after losing the home 1st leg. A great result for us that puts us into the Quarter finals where we will take on Schalke. The result was even better given we lost Michal Turna to a torn hamstring early on and he will now miss the rest of the season. In better injury news Gabriel Mesa returned from injury and hit the ground running with 6 goals in his first 5 games.

Review:

Really dissapointing way to finish the season, heading into the final game of the season we had won just 1 of 5 including drawing 3 in a row at home. After failing to beat Man City we headed to Anfield trailing the Citizens by 1 point. We had to win and hope they didn't at home to Swansea. Any hope we had of the Welsh side doing us a favour was quickly forgotten when City went 3-0 up after just 29 minutes. In Europe after seeing off Barcelona losing to Schalke was also really dissapointing and definitely a missed opportunity to make further progress.

2017/18 Season Round Up

2017/18 Winners

Premier League - Man City

Fa Cup - Chelsea

League Cup - Man Utd

Champions League - PSG

Europa League - Bordeaux

2017/18 Squad

Goalkeepers

Michal Turna's injury towards the end of the season didn't help us however Turna's form this season dissapointed me and he seemed to regress rather than improve. If another keeper comes along that I think is better I may invest.

Defenders

The back 4 were solid again with Simone Marzorati and Arne Hille both acting as good backups. The depth is something I need to look at as after a couple of injuries we were struggling to rotate some of our first teamers.

Midfielders

The midfield was probably our stronerst area with the attacking trio of Mojtaba Asghari, Evgeny Saitov & Marcel risse all superb again. The depth in the centre is something I might need to olook at however and with Vadis Odjidja not getting any younger a couple of replacements may be needed.

Forwards

Gabriel Mesa's injury in the middle of the season cost us a few points however his form when fit was once again exceptional. Hugo Fernandez was again a more than decent replacement and behind any other striker he would probably be getting even more playing time.

Youth Prospects

The youth facilities again are being upgraded but this year no real prospects have come through. This needs to start changing soon as the european rules are starting to take their toll on us although a few of the players we signed a couple of years ago will start to be counted as home grown players from next summer onwards.

Finances/Reputation

The club made a decent profit of £14.5m for the season and moved up to 11th in the richest clubs in the world list. Our Reputation has also been boosted over the past year and we now have the 7th best reputation in England up from 8th. Our European ranking sees us climb to 30th.

2018/19 Season Preview

Transfers In

Korbinian Roth (ST) - Hertha Berlin - £1.6m

Diego Fontaine (GK) - Porto - £12m

Nicola Pizzini (MC) - Roma - £7m

Lorenzo Del Monte (AMRLC) - Torino - £11.5m

Transfers Out

Milan Smiljanic - Released, Contract Expired

James Mills - Released, Contract Expired

Vaclav Cerny - Released, Contract Expired

Scott Wagstaff - Released, Contract Expired

After building for the future the past few years I decided to coontinue that but also aim for immediate success. Roth is 16, Fontaine 17, Pizzini 21 and Del Monte 22. Fontaine is as good as Michal Turna already and has 4 1/2 stars potential. Pizzini will play alongside Tomas Podstawski in the heart of the midfield whilst Del Monte who recently won his 1st Italian cap can play all across the attacking 3 spots or even up front if needed. On the other side Scott Wagstaff leaving was a bit sad and leaves us with only Jordan Cousins left in the squad from when I arrived.

Board Expectations

Premier League: Champions League Qualification

Fa Cup: Quarter Final

League Cup: Quarter Final

Kent Cup: Not Important

Champions League: Group Stage

Media Prediction: 5th

Title Odds: 16/1 - 5th Favourites

After going so close to winning the league last season we have to try and win it this year. If we can match our progress in the Champions League last season that will also be a decent effort. The Fa & League Cup are not my priorities and I will be putting out a reserve side in both competitions.

2018 World Cup

Spain lifted the World cup after a 1-0 win over Uruguay in the final. England meanwhile lost in the 2nd round to Italy on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Pre Season

Torquay 0-4 Charlton

Dubai 4-4 Charlton

Gwangju 0-4 Charlton

Persiwa 0-10 Charlton

Portland 1-6 Charlton

After starting our pre season in Torquay we went on a mini round the world tour. Playing in the U.A.E, Korea, Indonesia and then the U.S.

Review:

Almost the perfect start to the season in the league with 5 wins and 1 draw from our 6 games; exactly what we needed. Defeat in the league cup was no surprise as our reserve team was defeated by United. In the Champions League only being seeded 3rd means we once again have a tough group with Sevilla, Bayern Munich & Basel all in our group. Only drawing at home to Sevilla in the opener was a bit dissapointing but in good news Jordan Cousins is now an England International after being called up by new England Manager Steve McClaren (yes you read that right) for the Friendly against Switzerland.

Our good start to the season continued with 11 wins from 13 games so far. Dissapointing loss to Blackburn but we bounced back well against Arsenal. In Europe 2 good wins over Bayern and then on the road in Spain against Sevilla saw us book our place in the last 16 with 1 game to go.

Review:

A good couple of months over the winter period saw us go 4 points clear at the top of the table with 15 matches to go. Our reserve side put up a decent effort against Newcastle but ultimately fell short and went out. In Europe we demolished Basel in the final group game to win the group and we will now face Real Madrid in the 1st Knockout round. The battle for the title is now a 2 horse race between us and Man Utd with it looking like it might go down to the wire. The late equaliser against Man City could be crucial it leaves us 3 points clear although united do have a game in hand. In europe we progressed with a good win over Madrid and will now take on Porto in the Quarter final. Charlton Vs Chelsea

Going into this game we had 99 goals and knew a win would give us the title. After 20 minutes appropriately enough Gabriel Mesa grabbed the 100th goal as he headed in Evgeny Saitov's cross to give us the lead. With time running out and Chelsea desperate for the points to try and keep up the chase for 4th spot we struck another blow in the 71st minute as Jordan Cousins headed in a Marcel Risse corner. 5 minutes later and the sellout crowd at the Valley went mad as Nicola Pizzini turned in another Saitov cross from close range. Chelsea were deflated and we celebrated wildly as we lifted our 1st ever league title.

Charlton Win Premier League

Charlton 1-1 Sunderland

Cha: Pizzini 39

Sun: Bannan 68

Charlton Vs Man Utd (Champions League Final)

Our 1st ever Champions League final saw us taking on the side we had just beaten to the Premier League title. After making a bright start United were suddenly reduced to 10 men with Douglas Costa's red card. That though had the worst impact on us rather than them as Wayne Rooney gave United the lead. After some stern words at half-time Gabriel Mesa got us level early in the 2nd half before goals from Daniele Rugani and Nicola Pizzini gave us the victory.

Charlton Win Champions League

Dover 0-2 Charlton (Kent Senior Cup Final)

Marzorati 19, 31

Review:

A fantastic end to the season as we lifted 3 trophies in 3 1/2 weeks including our 1st ever League title and 1st Champions League. We had some blips along the way; the defeat to Norwich in particular but in the end United's run of games took their toll and they also slipped up and we took advantage. In Europe knocking out Barcelona again was obviously a highlight and hopefully we should now be seeded at least 2nd if not 1st which should make our group easier next season.

2018/19 Season Round Up

2018/19 Winners

Premier League - Charlton

Fa Cup - Man utd

League Cup - Swansea

Champions League - Charlton

Europa League - Sevilla

2018/19 Squad Part 1 - Part 2

Goalkeepers

Diego Fontaine had a really good 1st season and for a Keeper that is now only 18 he can surely only get better and hopefully turn into the Goalkeeper we thought Michal Turna could be.

Defenders

Jordan Cousins is now a regular for England and his central defensive partner Daniele Rugani now has caps for Italy. Rainer Fuchsenthaler's injury limited his playing time this season but he was very good when fit whilst Jose Cristovao has competition at left back with Arne Hille playing well when called upon. Simone Mazorati is getting better and is a really good backup centre back whilst Oleg Zakharov has had a decent 1st full season for us.

Midfielders

Nicola Pizzini at £7m was our big recruit in the centre of midfield and he and Tomas Podstawski played well together. In the attacking roles new man Lorenzo Del Monte contributed well filling in for Evgeny Saitov on the right and Mojtaba Asghari in the middle. On the left Marcel Risse was again very good with Andis Reis doing well when he saw playing time.

Forwards

Gabriel Mesa was rightly picked as Europe's best player at the end of the season after a fantastic year and it will not be long before he is getting on the World player of the year shortlist. Hugo Fernandez saw less action this season due to Mesa's form but still contributed when called upon.

Youth Prospects

This year it looks like we might actually have some decent players that could be able to make an impact. That can only help us especially in Europe where we have to meet the harder squad rules.

Finances/Reputation

The club made a loss this year mainly due to the transfer activity last summer. We are still firmly in the black though and I am aiming not to go on a spending spree again unless I really need to. The reputation home and away both climbed significantly as did our European Ranking which should now see us with at least a 2nd seed for the Champions League draw.

2019/20 Season Preview

Facilities/Upgrades

The big news this summer was the announcement of a new stadium. After selling out the majority of home games this season and with the Valley unable to expand any further the board agreed to my plea for a new bigger ground. Naturally the stadium will need a name and so who better to name it after than the 3rd most succesful manager in the clubs history. Yes 3rd not 1st or 2nd but 3rd. And so Curbishley Park will open on 27th June 2021 with a 54,936 capacity with a retractable roof and undersoil heating. A 15 year £5m a year sponsorship deal helps in the funding as does selling off the Valley on top of that the club took out a £240m loan that we will spend the next 15 years paying off.

Transfers In

Transfers Out

Benedikt Jahn - Released, Contract Expired

Vadis Odjidja - Released, Contract Expired

Patrick Muller - Released, Contract Expired

Carlos Marti - Released, Contract Expired

After spending quite a bit of money last season and with some youth prospects finally looking like they are coming through I took the decision not to add to our squad. Not just because of the finances but also because in truth the players that left didn't really play a big role last year. Patrick Muller was our 3rd choice keeper a role Mohammed Abdi who has been with us since coming into the youth team about 3 years ago can easily fulfill. Vadis Odjidja was declining and the form of Nicola Pizzini and Tomas Podstawski meant he was no longer going to be 1st choice. Benedikt Jahn had also seen his playing time decrease rapidly after the arrival of Lorenzo Del Monte and Carlos Marti had dropped to 3rd choice right back after the emergence of Oleg Zakharov.

Board Expectations

Premier League: Title Challenge

Fa Cup: Semi Final

League Cup: Not Important

Kent Cup: Not Important

Champions League: 1st Knockout Round

European Super Cup: Winners

Community Shield: Not Important

Media Prediction: 3rd

Title Odds: 5/1 - 3rd Favourites

Defending our league title is the priority whilst progress in the Champions league and trying to defend that trophy is also important. After fielding reserve sides in the Fa Cup the past 2 years I will also return to actually trying to make an effort to win a competition we have traditionally done well in.

Pre Season

Basildon 0-7 Charlton

Sevenoaks 0-4 Charlton

Shenhua 0-4 Charlton

Charlton 4-1 Spartak Moscow

Charlton 3-1 Celtic

After a couple of local games we headed to China for a friendly before returning home to take part in the Valley Vase. After seeing off Moscow in the semis we beat Celtic in the final after they had overcome PSV in the other semi. We concluded our pre season with the traditional season curtain raiser.

Charlton 0-0 (2-3 on pens) Man Utd (Community Shield)

A bit of a drab game eventually ended 0-0 and after 5 peanlties had been score with 4 missed in the shootout United triumphed when Pavel Yefremov's spot kick was saved by David De Gea.

Review:

A good opening to our Premier League campaign as we won 4 out of our opening 5 games with the only draw coming at title rivals Man Utd. A penalty shoot out victory over Sevilla avenged our Community Shield defeat to United in the same manner. In the Champions League we got off a thrilling start in St Petersburg with a cracking win over Zenit. We were seeded 1st and in our group we will also face French side Lyon and and Czech outfit Sparta Prague.

Review:

I don't think i've ever known a 2 month spell like this 12 wins from 13 games with an average of over 4 goals per game. We were simply on fire destroying all those who came before us, with the obvious exception of Chelsea. That brilliant run leaves us 7 points clear of Arsenal although the Gunners do have a game in hand on us. In Europe we made it 5 from 5 and won the group with a game to spare and qualified after only 4 matches.

Review:

After a great 2 months we came crashing back to earth a bit at the start of December as after losing to Lyon and Bolton and drawing against City we struggled through the World Club Championship winning 2 penalty shoot outs on our way to the title. Back in league action our form started to return and we ended January on the back of 6 wins in a row that leaves us 4 points clear of Chelsea with 15 games remaining. In the Fa cup after overcoming League 2 side Wycombe we got another home draw in the 4th round against fellow Premier League team Norwich. In the Champions League we will take on German Champions Bayern Munich in the 1st Knockout round. In other news Gabriel Mesa was rewarded for his fine form in 2019 with the 2 big world footballer of the year awards.

Review:

A massive dissapointment being knocked out of Europe at the 1st knockout stage against Bayern; especially considering we were literally only a minute or two away from going through until they scored in injury time. A decent couple of months in the league though the defeat at Chelsea certainly hasn't helped us. A good run in the Fa Cup has seen us make the semis where we will take on struggling Wigan. In the other semi Man City face Blackburn.

Charlton Vs Aston Villa

Going into the final game we led Chelsea by 3 points with an advantage in our goal difference as well. They took on Bolton at Stamford Bridge trying to win & put pressure on us. We knew a point would be enough to give us the title but we went out looking for the win. 33 minutes in Gabriel Mesa gave us the lead; a minute later and Chelsea were in front through Lukaku. With both of us 1 up at the break we knew we needed a 2nd especially when Juan Mata doubled the Blues advantage. 6 minutes into the 2nd half Skipper Tomas Podstawski doubled our adavantage with a placed finish from the edge of the box to put us within touching distance of defending our title. 7 minutes from time any hope Chelsea had was gone when the Premier League's top scorer Gabriel Mesa headed his 2nd and put the game out of reach. Chelsea added a 3rd of there own through Yarmolenko but there was no denying us.

Charlton Win Premier League

Bromley 0-3 Charlton (Kent Senior Cup Final)

Mesa 39, Asghari 55, 75

Review:

A good way to end the season as we lifted the Fa Cup and defended the Premier League. The win over Man City pretty much sealed the title and left us just needing a point against Villa something we never looked unlikely not to get. All in all a good season but next season we need to bounce back and perform better in Europe.

2019/20 Season Round Up

2019/20 Winners

Premier League - Charlton

Fa Cup - Charlton

League Cup - Man Utd

Champions League - Barcelona

Europa League - Valencia

2019/20 Squad

Goalkeepers

Diego Fontaine had a solid 2nd season and finished 3rd in the Golden Glove trophy. Given he is still so young I really hope he can develop into the Goalkeeper we thought he could be when we signed him.

Defenders

Jordan Cousins is a concern not his form but he has twice now come to me saying he thinks he needs a new challenge. So far I have managed to convince him his future lies here but he may not be adding many more league appearances to his current total of 302. Daniele Rugani and Simone Mazorati played well this last season and I am confident in them if Cousins does go. Rainer Fuchsenthaler is under pressure from the improving Oleg Zakharov at right back whilst Jose Cristovao is also being pushed by new german international Arne Hille at left back.

Midfielders

Nicola Pizzini and captain Tomas Podstawski were the heart of the midfield and did well whilst they were backed up well by Killian Remy. In the attacking roles Lorenzo Del Monte took over the main starting role behind the striker and performed well whilst Evgeny Saitov was again superb on the right. Marcel Risse looks as if he may be starting to hit his limit and the emergence of Andis Weis on the left could see Risse's playing time drop in 2020/21.

Forwards

After winning World Player of the Year and the World Golden ball Award Gabriel Mesa confirmed his status as one of the best players in the world by finishing the season as top scorer in Europe for the 2nd straight year. When he was out of the side Hugo Fernandez played most in the 1st half of the season with youngsters Pavel Yefremov, Korbinian Roth & Iordanis Raptis sharing the role through the 2nd half of the season.

Youth Prospects

Our Youth facilities/networking are finally paying dividends; from last years crop Kevin Machel (DC) is now our 4th choice central defender and has already made 6 league appearances for us. Depending on what happens with Cousins he could be in for a big season. We also had Iordanis Raptis (AMC/ST) a Greek/English youngster come through. He has made 12 league appearances for the 1st team already and is attracting the interest of Arsenal and Chelsea.

This year we have 4 players that could be useful now or in the future. Ifeanyi Okafor & Matt Marney (GK's) are both going to compete for the starting under 18 spot. With fellow youth graduate Mohammed Abdi about to become our new number 2 they are also fighting for the number 3 spot between the posts. Alejandro Reed (DL) can play all along the left flank and can be utilised as a Winger if need be. He is probablby the best of this years crop and I am going to try and use him in at least a few cup games this season to gicve him a taste of the 1st team. Danny Fry (AMC/ST) is similar to Raptis in that he can play just behind or as the main striker; he got my attention straight away as he bagged a hat trick in the youth candidates match and if he maintains that performance in the under 18's & reserves this season he may get a chance to impress in the 1st team.

Finances/Reputation

After spending no money last year we were able to make a tidy £8.7m profit for the season which includes a £2.1m youth upgrade after technological advancements dropped our excellent facilities down a notch. We are now up to 6th in the richest clubs in the world list just behing Atletico Madrid and ahead of PSG. In Europe our reputation is up to 12th which is 2nd in England only behind Man Utd.

2020/21 Season Preview

European Championships 2020

France defeated Italy in the final 5-4 on penalties after a 0-0 draw. Lorenzo Del Monte played the 1st 68 minutes of the game before being subtituted. England were defeated by Italy 2-1 in the Semi-Finals.

Transfers In

Sergio Miranda (M/AM LC) - £2.9m - Real Madrid

Transfers Out

Michal Turna - Released, Contract Expired

Mojtaba Asghari - Released, Contract Expired

Hugo Fernandez - Released, Contract Expired

Robert Ward - Released, Contract Expired

Jose Cristovao - £6m plus 25% of future sale - Arsenal

With no really good CM youth prospects coming through I decided to go out & sign one. The best available was Madrid's 16 year old versatile midfielder Sergio Miranda who will immediately join up with the 1st team squad and although he will contribute mainly from the bench early on his playing time should increase as the season goes on. Michal Turna leaving was no surprise his play declined 2 years ago & since Diego Fontaine arrived he has hardly figured. Asghari & Fernandez both left due to the youngsters in the team coming through; Iordanis Raptis & Danny Fry can both play just behind or as the Striker whilst Pavel Yefremov & Korbinian Roth both deserve more opportunities to impress. Ward leaving is also no surprise, certainly a player with potential but it never really happened for him and he needs a change of team. Jose Cristovao had injury & suspension (3 red cards) problems last season and that allowed Arne Hille to stake his claim for a 1st team spot; he performed well and with Alejandro Reed coming into the youth team I felt we could afford to let the Portugese Fullback leave.

Board Expectations

Premier League: Title Challenge

Fa Cup: Semi Final

League Cup: Not Important

Kent Cup: Not Important

Champions League: Quarter-Final

Community Shield: Not Important

Media Prediction: 3rd

Title Odds: 5/1 - 3rd Favourites

Defending the league title is the number 1 aim but getting further than last season in Europe is also a priority especially with the board expecting it. All in all though the main aim is to make this season as memorable as possible with it being the last ever season of us playing at the Valley.

Pre Season

Hythe 0-5 Charlton

Gold Coast United 1-8 Charlton

Newcastle Jets 0-6 Charlton

All Boys 0-2 Charlton

Rosario Central 2-6 Charlton

After a win at Hythe we headed to Australia where we recorded 2 comfortable victories before flying to Argentina where we made it 5 from 5 in pre season. We then took on Chelsea in the traditional curtain raiser:

Charlton 4-2 Chelsea (Community Shield)

Cha: Robinson o.g 27, Del Monte 30, 32, Mesa 54

Che: Lukaku 38, 72

After beating Chelsea to the title last year we defeated them again in the Community Shield with Lorenzo Del Monte particularly impressive. 3 goals in 7 minutes pretty much sealed the victory and helped us lift the Community Shield for the 2nd time in 3 years.

Review:

A perfect start to the season 6 out of 6 in the league and top of the table by 3 points. In Europe we have been given a relatively straight forward group to get out of with Dinamo Zagreb the other side we will face and with 2 wins from 2 we are looking good to make it to the knockout stages again.

Review:

Not a great couple of months for us winning only 3 of our 8 league games including 2 defeats to United & Chelsea. Our lead at the top has now been cut to 1 point whilst Gabriel Mesa is in the worst form of his life. Fortunately young striker Korbinian Roth is having his best spell for us otherwise we would have done even worse. Marcel Risse also damaged his ligaments in the Shakhtar game and could be out for 11 months. With the veteran winger out of contract in the summer he may have played his last game for us. We did at least progress in Europe with a game to spare & can now relax against PSG in the final match.

Review:

An almost perfect couple of months for us as we won all but 1 game & that was only due to Tottenham scoring twice in the space of 60 seconds. Apart from that lapse though our defence has been superb helping us keep 11 clean sheets in 13 games in part it has also been down to the very good performances of Diego Fonatine between the sticks. With us 6 points clear & with just 14 games to go another league title looks very possible; especially with Gabriel Mesa back in form; his goal against Swansea also made him our all time leading goalscorer with 154 goals 1 more than Stuart Leary. In Europe we have been drawn agisnt CSKA Moscow in the 1st knockout round of the Champions League.
