My first save with FM12 will be as it normally is with the team I support:

Background

Charlton Athletic are a professional football club based in the historic borough of Greenwich in south east London. The club are the most successful side in the south east of the capital. The club were formed on 9 June 1905 when some boys from various youth clubs in the area joined together to form a team. The side had a nomadic beginning playing at various locations across the boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham before finally settling at the Valley. The real push to become a bigger; better side started in 1913 when Woolwich Arsenal one of the biggest sides in the country at the time left the area and moved north of the river. In the 1919/20 season the team joined the Kent League before turning professional and appointing Walter Rayner as the club’s first full time manager.

After 1 season in the southern league (1920/21) the club were voted into the Football League. In 1923/24 the club played their games at Catford after a proposal to merge the club with Catford Southend. Just 1 season after moving to Catford though the team returned to the Valley as the move fell through. In preparation for the 1933/34 season the club appointed Jimmy Seed as manager and he would go on to become the club’s most successful boss and now has a stand named after him. From 1934 to 1936 the club achieved successive promotions as the team went from the 3rd division to the 1st.

In 1946 the club made it to its 1st FA cup final only to be beaten 4-1 by Derby; a year later though and Charlton lifted the trophy thanks to Chris Duffy’s goal giving the Addicks a 1-0 win over Burnley. At this time the Valley became the largest ground in the entire football league and entertained crowds of over 70,000 for some games. In 1956 though the Charlton board sacked Seed and a year later the club were relegated. The club spent the majority of the next 40 years in the 2nd tier and it was the off field stories that got most of the attention including the random signing of European footballer of the year Allan Simonsen that nearly sent the club out of business.

With the club in financial meltdown and The Valley falling apart the club moved into rivals Crystal Palace Selhurst Park home. The club however lost many of its fans at this time as some refused to watch the club play there and give money to Palace. In addition to the spell at Selhurst Park the club also spent time playing at Upton Park before finally returning to the Valley in December 1992. At the end of the 1997/98 the club were promoted to the Premier League after beating Sunderland 7-6 on penalties following a 4-4 draw in one of the greatest ever games at Wembley. Having been relegated after just 1 season the club bounced back at the first attempt by winning the 1st Division.

The club remained in the Premier League until 2007 when they were relegated following a disastrous season that saw the club have 3 different managers and the board make a series of appalling decisions. 18 months later and Alan Pardew was axed with the team struggling at the bottom of the 2nd tier. His assistant Phil Parkinson was then given the job full time despite not winning any of his games whilst caretaker boss. Unsurprisingly the club were relegated to the 3rd tier and after losing in the playoffs the following season Parkinson’s time as boss was numbered. Eventually he was given the boot and replaced with club legend Chris Powell. Having won his first 4 games in charge an unlikely playoff push looked possible but that dream quickly died and the side finished a disappointing 13th.

2011/12 Squad Profile

Goalkeepers

Ben Hamer – Signed from Reading in the summer and following Rob Elliot’s move to Newcastle he is now in pole position to claim the starting spot between the sticks.

John Sullivan – Spent time at the club on loan last season and joined permanently on a free at the end of the last campaign; is likely to be the number 2 heading into this season.

Conor Gough & Nick Pope – We also have 2 reasonable young keepers at the club both start the season out on loan. Pope is at Harrow borough whilst Gough is with Salisbury.

Defenders

Chris Solly – Young right back who has come through the academy and progressed into a first team regular; will have the chance to earn the starting spot at right back.

Simon Francis – Nearly left the club in the summer but still remains and has a chance to push Solly for the right back slot.

Leon Cort – On loan from Burnley the centre back is battling for a starting role after losing his place at turf moor.

Michael Morrison – His 3rd team in 3 years Morrison needs to establish himself at a club. Always regarded as a player with some talent he now needs to develop and put down roots.

Matt Taylor – The former Exeter skipper was signed in the summer and will compete with Morrison & Cort for the 2 starting centre back spots.

Gary Doherty – Adds a veteran presence to the squad but at this stage of his career he is very much a back up player.

Jordan Cousins – A young player that we have big hopes for; can play at centre back or in central midfield and hopefully will get to see enough playing time this year to help him develop.

Yado Mambo – The big centre half is a player that has come through the ranks at the Valley but is yet to really fulfil his potential. He will start the season on loan at Ebbsfleet.

Rhoys Wiggins – Signed from League 1 rivals Bournemouth in the summer. Has plenty of experience at this kind of level and will be the favourite to start at left back in the opener.

Cedric Evina – The former Arsenal man joined on a free when he decided to move back to London following a spell at Oldham. His versatility means he can play at left back or on the wing.

Midfielders

Andy Hughes – The utility man could prove a useful addition to the squad can play at either full back position or anywhere across the midfield.

Danny Hollands – Another former Bournemouth man he has been a regular for the Cherries during their climb from the bottom of league 2 to league 1 playoff contenders. Hollands provides a tackling force in the midfield that should help ease the pain of losing fan favourite Jose Semedo.

Dale Stephens – Former Oldham man Stephens is expected to partner Hollands in the centre of midfield and should be allowed freedom to get forward and help out the more forward thinking players.

Bradley Pritchard – A bit of a random signing from Hayes & Yeading he could prove to be a great signing or simply find himself sitting in the reserves.

Mikel Alonso – Returned to English football following a spell with Tenerife in the Spanish 2nd tier. The combative midfielder could play a role late on in games or in some ties away from home where we are not the favourites.

Freddie Warren – The former under 18 captain is a player who hopefully can develop whilst away from the club. He will spend the first 2 months of the season at Kettering where he will hope to get plenty of football under his belt.

Scott Wagstaff – The young winger has come through the ranks and developed into a key player on the right last season. He showed an ability to score crucial goals and could be an important part of a promotion push.

Danny Green – Signed from Dagenham & Redbridge following the Daggers relegation the right winger will push Wagstaff hard for the starting spot on the right wing.

Johnnie Jackson – The captain can play in the centre of midfield or anywhere along the left flank. With our talent in the middle of the park it is likely he will be deployed wide on the left.

Ruben Bova – A young Spanish attacking midfielder that can play on either wing or just behind the strikers. He has some potential and could be a useful impact sub late on in games.

Ben Davisson – The young left winger will start the season out on loan just down the road at Blue Square South side Welling where he will be hoping to get some experience under his belt.

Strikers

Bradley Wright-Phillips – Arguably the best Striker in the division BWP scored a bunch of goals for relegated Plymouth before his January move to London. Will be the man we look to for the goals to fire us back into the Championship.

Yann Kermogant – The former Leicester man is probably most famous for his woeful penalty but he is now looking for a fresh start in the capital. He can play as a striker but he is likely to be deployed just behind BWP in our 4-2-3-1 formation.

Paul Hayes – Should be able to score goals at this level and maybe used a lot as a sub or as a starter alongside BWP if we switch to 4-4-2.

Jason Euell – The former Addick returns for his 2nd spell at the club. Although he is probably at his best when up front he can also play in any of the 3 attacking midfield roles and that versatility in itself will keep him at least around the fringes of the squad.

Paul Benson – Another former Dagger Benson almost left the club in the summer and with us switching to a 4-2-3-1 his playing time will probably be limited and will start pre season as 5th choice striker.

Michael Smith – Signed from Darlington the young striker has potential but with the players ahead of him at the moment he will probably be better served going out on loan to get some more experience.

2011/12 Pre Season Round Up

Our pre season consisted of 5 games; 4 away from home and then finishing with 1 home game. We started out with a 3-0 win over US Dunkerque thanks to a brace from Johnnie Jackson and a goal from Bradley Wright-Phillips. We followed that up with a 7-1 demolition of Calais RUFC with BWP grabbing 2; Paul Hayes a 2nd half hat trick whilst Michael Morrison and Paul Benson also got themselves on the scoresheet. Our 3 game mini tour of France concluded with our 3rd win and a 3-1 victory over Paris FC with Jason Euell, Ruben Bover and Hayes getting the goals.

We returned back to England with a 4 nil win over Welling thanks to another 2 goals from Hayes whilst Adam Hughes and Yann Kermogant got their 1st goals of pre season. Our final game saw us take on dutch side Vitesse at the Valley where we slipped to a 1-0 defeat.

During pre season 3 of our younger players left on 6 month loan deals. Michael Smith and Callum Harriott both joined Cambridge whilst Jordan Cousins moved to Kettering.

Good start to the season with only 1 league defeat so far in a dissapointing defeat at Carlisle. We put out a reserve side against Bristol City and performed pretty well. In the 2nd round of the Kent Senior Cup we have been drawn at home to Sittingbourne which should provide some of our youngert players with some valuable experience.

Review:

A great run over the past 2 months that saw us win 11 of our 14 games. Bradley Wright-Phillips was unfortunately injured in the Orient game and will now miss the next 3 months or so. Fortunately Paul Hayes has stepped up his game and taken his chance in the first team really well. Yann Kermogant's goals are also proving valuable as we push to keep up the pressure on those around us. We are away to Wycombe in the 2nd round of the FA Cup and at home to Faversham in the Quarter final of the Kent Senior Cup.

In the league us & Preston continued our domination and opened up the gap on our rivlals further. In the FA Cup we were dissapointingly knocked out by West Ham especially as it looked as if we had won the match in the first tie despite being 2 down after just 11 minutes. In the Kent Senior Cup our reserve/youth side made progress to the semis where we now take on Dartford. In the transfer window Ben Davisson's contract expired and he was let go whilst Bradley Pritchard moved on a free to Wrexham, Mikel Alonson joined Rayo and Paul Benson moved to Burton also on free transfers. We did sign 1 player with Young winger Andrew Halliday moving from Middlesbrough on a free transfer and signing a deal until the end of the season.

Review:

Promotion achieved but we ended up stumbling across the line in the end as we won just 2 of our previous 6 games before promotion was finalised. 2 up agaisnt Chesterfield knowing 3 points would be enough we somehow blew that lead and then failed to beat MK Dons meaning that we were only promoted once it was confirmned that Sheff Utd had drawn with Bournemouth. Now the aim is to win the title and get to 100 points and 100 goals. In the Kent Senior Cuo our reserve/youth side was humiliated by Dartford and their in form hit man Charlie Sheringham.

2011/12 Season Review & Summer Round Up

Overall we did what we were expected to which was gain promotion. In the end it proved to be a bit easier than I expected and we cruised to promotion and the title. A couple of dissapointments along the way including the crushing our reserve side suffered at Dartford and West Ham scoring a late equaliser to deny us an FA Cup upset. The depth of squad we have here is pretty good and if we can add a couple of new faces to0 the team i'm confident we can do reasonably well next year. Financially it was a bad year as we lost £1.8m so i'm going to try and make sure most if not all our signings are free transfers.

2012/13 Pre Season Round Up

Board Expectations for 2012/13:

Championship: Mid Table Finish

Promotion Odds: 20/1 (5th Favourites) - Media Prediction: 17th

FA Cup: 4th Round

League Cup: 3rd Round

Kent Senior Cup: Not Important

Transfers

Our transfers of note saw a number of players leave at the end of their contracts including Jason Euell, Gary Doherty, Simon Francis, Ruben Bover and Conor Gough. We also sold Goalkeeper John Sullivan for £10K to Bristol City; Andrew Halliday however was offered a new deal. To replace the outgoing players we signed a few free agents:

Graeme Smith (GK) - Should provide back up for Hamer and push him to develop further.

Chris Riggott (DC) - The veteran defender was signed to add depth to the squad behind Taylor & Morrison.

Sean Davis (MC) - The former Bolton man will add depth in the middle of the park and push Hollands & Stephens for a starting role.

Jordi Gomez (MC/AMC) - Signed on a free from Wigan Gomez gives us another option in the middle or he can play just behind the striker in our 4-2-31 formation.

Joshua John (AMR/L) - Signed from Sparta the dutchman gives us depth on both flanks and will push Wagstaff and Jackson for a starting role.

Pre Season

Our pre season involved 4 games all away from home. We started at Lincoln City where we won 5-0 thanks to goals from Yann Kermogant, Michael Morrison, Danny Hollands and 2 from Paul Hayes. We then headed over the water to take on Coleraine where we picked up another 5 goal win thanks to Kermogant, Hayes, Johnnie Jackson, Chris Riggott and Joshua John. Returning to England we defeated Crawley 3-0 with goals from Jackson, Hayes and Andy Hughes before concluding pre season with another 3-0 win against Darlington where Kermogant, Jackson and Andrew Halliday got goals.

During pre season Matt Taylor picked up a knock and will now miss the 1st month of the season so we have signed Centre back Shane Duffy on loan from Everton.

Review:

A good start to the season in the league; better than we could have expected really. The win over Palace being the obvious highlight and Jordi Gomez has already established himself in Charlton history with that goal. A couple of dissapointments though including the defeat to Leicester my first home league defeat since taking over. The League cup defeat however was the massive failing and it shows that the depth at the club may not be as good as I had hoped. Our next cup game will see us take on Dartford in the 2nd Round of the Kent Senior Cup at the Valley as we look to avenge our humiliating loss to the non league outfit in the semi final last year.

Review:

An inconsistent couple of months that saw us at least maintain our good start and keep ourselves clear of any kind of danger. A top half finish is now looking a realistic hope though injuries are starting to mount up. Paul Hayes was injured in the Leeds game and will now be out for the next 5 months with a torn calf muscle and with Michael Smith also out for the next 3 weeks we are down to the bare bones up front. The unhappy Graeme Smith has agreed a £20K move to Rangers and will join them on January 1st. As a replacement we have signed Blackburn keeper Jake Kean on a 2 month loan.

Review:

A solid month that sees us keep up what looked like an unlikely playoff dream at the start of the season. Mid table was our aim and with the squad here that's what we should have achieved but so far the players have been brilliant and Michael Morrison's sudden goalscoring form is giving us a great chance to do even better; next up though is a tricky tie in the Fa Cup at Man City. Financially we are losing £700k-£800k a month and so I decided to get a parent club and so step forward Arsenal. Carl Jenkinson then returned to us on loan for the rest of the season whilst we also signed Man Utd's young Goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini as cover for Ben Hamer when Jake Kean returned to parent club Blackburn.

Review:

A decent couple of months for us; we had a couple of bad results but overall I can't complain with how we have performed. The form of BWP, Michael Morrison and Jordi Gomez has been especially pleasing and without their goals we wouldn't have done nearly as well. Unless the form of one of the top 4 falls apart it's looking like it will be 2 of 3 for the other 2 top 6 spots now with us, Wigan and Cardiff fighting it out. The good news is our run in only includes sides currently in the bottom half with 13th placed Peterborough being the hardest game left on paper whilst we also still have to face 4 of the bottom 5.

Rhoys Wiggins was unfortunately injured in the Reading game and will be out for around the next 10 months with a cruciate ligament injury. After the injury we signed Bolton's Spanish left back Marcos Alonso on loan for the remainder of the season. Dissapointed to be knocked out the Fa Cup but we played well against Man City and can be proud of the players efforts. In the Kent Senior Cup our reserve side made progress by knocking out the holders Ebbsfleet and we will now travel to Chatham in the semis whilst Gillingham entertain Whitstable in the other half of the draw.

Review:

A good month that saw us seal 6th place and a spot in the playoffs. We went into the final game knowing we had to match Ipswich's result to get in but we dominated Middlesbrough and once we were 2 up there was no danger of us not making it. Ipswich meanwhile lost 3-2 at Watford and missed out. In the playoffs we will face Leicester starting with the 1st leg at The Valley. A reserve side also made progress to the Kent Senior Cup final and we will now take on Gillingham in the final who overcame Whitstable in the other semi.

2012/13 Playoffs Round Up

Charlton Vs Leicester (Playoff Semi-Final 1st Leg)

We headed into the biggest game of the season with almost our first choice team with only Rhoys Wiggins & Paul Hayes missing. We also had the incentive of playing in front of a sold out Valley for the first time in a long while. That all combined to help us get off to a flying start dominating the Foxes from the opening kick off. On 23 minutes our domination paid dividends and Bradley Wright-Phillips fed Scott Wagstaff who tucked home a neat finish. 4 minutes later and the Valley was jumping as Danny Hollands chose the perfect time to strike a super 25 yarder that flew into the net for his 1st goal of the season. With half time approaching Leicester suddenly got a lifeline though when Johnnie Jackson sent Paul Gallagher tumbling in the box. Gallagher dusted himself off and slotted home the resulting penalty.

HT: Charlton 2-1 Leicester

The 2nd half started as the 1st ended with Leicester on the front foot and within 3 minutes they were level as John Pantsil suddenly found himself in the box and he fired home the equaliser. Both sides then traded chances as each team looked for the winner. 6 minutes from the end Hollands was fouled 25 yards out and Dale Stephens free kick was floated into the area. 1 man rose highest; it was the man we wanted to be there - Wright-Phillips; his deft header looped into the net and sent the Charlton faithful delirious.

FT: Charlton 3-2 Leicester

Leicester Vs Charlton (Playoff Semi Final 2nd Leg)

We made just 1 change to line up for this game as Joshua John came in for Johnnie Jackson on the left wing. A nervy opening half hour saw both sides desperate not to concede early. After 35 minutes the break through came Dave Nugent lashing the ball home at the far post after we had failed to properly clear a corner.

HT: Leicester 1-0 Charlton (3-3 on aggregate)

The 2nd half was tense and nervy as well with both teams looking for the winner but not really going all out to find it. As the game went on tiredness became a factor and the game started to become more open. John hit the post for us on 73 minutes before Bradley Wright-Phillips turn and shot crashed off the bar. At the other end Ben Hamer saved well from a Nugent shot and Paul Gallagher dragged the ball wide when clean through. There was to be no winner though - not yet anyway.

After 90 Minutes: Leicester 1-0 Charlton (3-3 on aggregate)

Extra time got underway and now both sides were going for it. Chances came at both ends Wright-Phillips header hit the bar and Michael Morrison put a chance just wide for us whilst Nugent twice missed chances for the Foxes. The game was surely heading for penalties the 4th official was on the sideline he had the board out for the added on time at the end of extra time; we were only a minute away from the end of 120. Then suddenly 1 last chance; Wagstaff broke away down the right the Leicester defenders were tired and couldn't keep up with the young wingers speed. He put in 1 last cross; could anyone get to it? GOAL!!! Bradley Wright-Phillips who else? was there to meet the cross with a firm header that he sent crashing into the net. The players, bench and fans celebrated the Adfdicks were on their way to Wembley.

AET: Leicester 1-1 Charlton (3-4 on aggregate)

Cardiff beat Wigan 5-4 on aggregate in the other Semi-Final.

Charlton Vs Cardiff (Playoff Final)

After the drama of the Semi-Final we were looking forward to a final and arguably the biggest day for the club since the last playoff final against Sunderland. We kept faith with the first XI that had earned a draw at Leicester; however on the bench we had the welcome sight of seeing Paul Hayes; the first time he had been in the squad since late November. Straight out of the blocks we dominated battering the Cardiff goal with shots and chances and if it hadn't of been for the fantastic David Marshall we would have been home and dry within the first 27 minutes. That however is when the game changed as suddenly a moment of brilliance from Don Cowie gave the Welsh side the lead - He waltzed round 3 of our players before firing home from just inside the box. Still we dominated but could not score; at the other end Rob Earnshaw should have punished us further but was wasteful with a header.

HT: Charlton 0-1 Cardiff

We started the 2nd half as again the better side but again it seemed as if our poor finishing was going to cost us as Kenny Miller raced clear and slotted the ball beyond Ben hamer; Cardiff celebrated but too prematurely the flag was up and the goal would not stand. We were becoming more desperate and we were looking vulnerable at the back. Then though the moment we needed as Jordi Gomez drilled home a low shot from the edge of the box; now the game was level and it was anyone's to win. Both sides tried to; Miller missed a sitter while Earnshaw put a header straight at Hamer. We had chances of our own Bradley Wright-Phillips put wide when he normally would have scored and Joshua John smashed a 25 yard strike off the post. Again we were heading to extra time.

After 90 Minutes: Charlton 1-1 Cardiff

Extra time was frantic; neither side it seems wanted penalties. Miller was again wasteful whilst sub Hayes almost had the fairytale return only to see his shot hit the bar. Michael Morrison then forced a great save from Marshall; the ball was loose though and Johnnie Jackson followed up; again though Marshall saved, somehow able to get back to his feet to deny the midfielder. Then in injury time of extra time a corner; swung in by Cedric Evina was met by Hayes head but saved by Marshall. That was the last header of the game; it would now be settled from the spot.

AET: Charlton 1-1 Cardiff

The first 3 penalties were all scored; up stepped Jackson it was saved by Marshall diving to his left he kept it out. The hero of the first 120 minutes looked to be the hero of the penalties as well. The next 4 spot kicks were all scored, it was now or never - Cardiff led 4-3, 1 penalty each left, Anthony Gerrard Vs Ben Hamer who would win. The answer was not the one we hoped for; Gerrard and his team celebrated promotion and we were left to lick our wounds. A fabulous league season had come to an end in the cruelest of fashions.

Charlton 1-1 Cardiff (AET, Cardiff win 5-3 on penalties)

Summer 2013 Round Up

Charlton 2-0 Gillingham (Kent Senior Cup Final)

Cousins 45+4, Wright-Phillips 49

After the dissapointment of the playoff final we at least ended the season on a high with victory over Gillingham in the Kent Cup and a trophy to lift. The preparation work for next season is already underway though and we only have 1 thing on our minds - promotion.

Squad Review

Goalkeepers

Ben Hamer 50 Apps - 13 Clean Sheets, 6.96 Rating

A solid season from Hamer who had a slight improvement in his overall rating. He is progressing pretty well and i'm confident he is good enough at least for this level.

Defenders

Jenkinson 5(6) Apps , 7.03 Rating

Cousins 51 (1) Apps, 6 Goals, 7.07 Rating

Fox 3(3) Apps, 6.70 Rating

Morrison 45 Apps, 10 Goals, 7.26 Rating

Riggott 2(6) Apps, 6.70 Rating

Taylor 6 Apps, 1 Goal, 7.15 Rating

Duffy 7(11) Apps, 2 Goals, 7.06 Rating

Butterfield 8 Apps, 6.54 Rating

Solly 44 Apps, 7.10 Rating

Wiggins 21 Apps, 7.08 Rating

Evina 11(1) Apps, 6.92 Rating

A breakout season for Jordan Cousins who took his opportunity in the first team superbly. He and Michael Morrison at the back formed a great understanding and could be our centre back pairing for a few years. Chris Solly was really good at right back and he seems to be getting better as time goes by as well. At Left back Rhoys Wiggins played well but his injury proneness is a bit of a concern and something we may have to look at.

Midfielders

Hughes 9(6) Apps, 2 Goals, 7.00 Rating

Davis 16(5) Apps, 6.76 Rating

Wagstaff 50(1) Apps, 14 Goals, 7.05 Rating

Jackson 32(14) Apps, 6 Goals, 6.82 Rating

Hollands 41(1) Apps, 1 Goal, 6.94 Rating

Stephens 47 Apps, 7.10 Rating

Green 6(3) Apps, 1 Goal, 7.30 Rating

John 20(21) Apps, 6 Goals, 6.99 Rating

Carter 1 App, 2 Goals, 9.40 Rating

Gomez 44(5) Apps, 6 Goals, 7.09 Rating

Halliday 3(5) Apps, 2 Goals, 7.00 Rating

Dale Stephens and Danny Hollands were again the stars in the middle of the park and I have confidence that they are more than good enough to get us out of this division. Jordi Gomez is an instant hit with the fans after scoring the winner at Selhurst Park and his role just behind the striker suited him perfectly. On the wings Scott Wagstaff was very good on the right whilst Johnnie Jackson saw his playing time slightly reduced by the form of new arrival Joshua John who did well in his first season for us.

Forwards

Kermogant 23(14) Apps, 10 Goals, 6.92 Rating

Hayes 7(8) Apps, 8 Goals 7.24 Rating

Wright-Phillips 39(4) Apps, 29 Goals, 7.23 Rating

Azeez 0(5) Apps, 6.40 Rating

Bradley Wright-Phillips was again in stunning goal scoring form and for the 2nd straight year finished as 2nd highest scorer in the division. Paul Hayes injury ruled him out for a long spell but when he played he was very good for us. Yann Kermogant has started to fade and his playing time next year is likely to be cut further.

Transfers Out

Danny Butterfield - Retired

Cedric Evina - Released

Andy Hughes - Released

Chris Riggott - Released

Sean Davis - Released

Transfers In

Nicky Bailey - Free

Carl Jenkinson - Season Long Loan

Lee Naylor - Free

Harry Kane - Season Long Loan

Sam Johnstone - Season Long Loan

The 5 players that left were all out of contract and were all back up players. I'm happy with the first team from last year as the majority of the team are reasonably young and still improving. Johnstone will act as cover for Hamer between the sticks. Jenkinson & Naylor give us depth at the back whilst Kane could play in relief of Wright-Phillips in cup games. The opportunity to bring Nicky Bailey back was to tempting and he will act as the 3rd central midfielder and 1st choice replacement for Stephens or Holands.

Financially the club made a £3.9m profit; that was however mainly due to the board investing £8m to help with the rubnning costs. The good news is we have a couple of loans that we are due to finish paying in September. With the transfer dealings we have managed to lower the wage bill and if we do well this year we should get some higher attendances and raise a bit more cash.

2013/14 Season Preview

After missing out in the playoffs last year the aim this season is to make sure we go 1 better and make it back to the Premier League.

Board Expectations:

League: Playoffs

Fa Cup: 4th Round

League Cup: 3rd Round

Kent Cup: Unimportant

Media Prediction: 5th

Odds: 25/1

Strange odds of 25/1 as we are predicted to finish 5th yet last season we had odds of 20/1 and were predicted to finish 17th.

Pre Season

Darlington 0-5 Charlton

Plymouth 0-9 Charlton

Welling 0-4 Charlton

Hereford 0-2 Charlton

Charlton 6-0 Slavia Prague

About as comprehensive pre season as I can remember as we demloished our opponents in all 5 games. The Plymouth result was helped by the fact they played the last half hour with only 9 men but we were 5 up by that stage already. All in all though a good pre season that sees us head into the 1st game full of confidence.

A somewhat inconsistent start to the season but we are still undefeated in the league so I can't complain to much. In the league cup however it is a different story as for the 3rd year in a row we crash out in the 1st round and for the 2nd year in a row it is at home to lower league opposition. I did ring the changes for the match though and I take full responsibility for the fact we lost. Our priority though is the league and if we go up; I couldn't care less if we get knocked out of all 3 cups at the first stage.

A solid couple of months that sees us maintain our promotion push. Dissapointed to lose to Birmingham & Wolves but we ended November on fire with 4 straight wins including victories over Palace & Millwall both of whom had only just changed managers after Dougie Freedman & Kenny Jackett left to take over at West Ham and Nottm Forest respectively. If we can keep up this form then we should have a decent chance of gaining promotion.

Review:

The Fa Cup run is obviously the highlight of the past 2 months as we dispacted 2 more Premier League clubs including 4th placed Liverpool. The Liverpool game though took its toll on us with Scott Wagstaff out for the rest of the season with a torn calf muscle and Mojtaba Ashgari out for even longer with a broken leg. To replace them we signed Arsenal winger Vivaldy Donkor on loan for the rest of the season. The draw for the Quarter Final was kind as we drew the only other non top flight team left and victory at League 1 Sheffield United now leaves us with a glamour tie against Man Utd in the semi final at Wembley. In the league our form has been patchy; on one side we didn't lose but the draws are mounting up and costing us valuable points which may end up meaning we end up in the playoffs again.

Charlton Vs Watford

The last game of the season; 2 points behind Wolves after our heavy defeat at Wigan saw the Molineux side overtake us as our unbeaten 31 game league run came to an end. Wolves were at home to already relegated Middlesbrough - we didn't hold out much hope they would do us a favour. After 23 minutes Bruno scored for Wolves and the writing was on the wall. We had to win though to have any chance and on 36 minutes Bradley Wright-Phillips raced onto a Dale Stephens through ball and slotted home now we both lead 1-0. That was how it stayed until half-time; could Boro do us a massive 2nd half favour?

We got that answer very quickly NO; a minute into the 2nd half Michael Kightly scored and Wolves were almost home and dry. When Kevin Doyle scored after 53 minutes they were. The Valley was subdued we were winning but it wouldn't matter we were now destined to fin ish 3rd. Wolves weren't done though Doyle scored again 4 minutes later and then completed his hat trick on 63 minutes a 9 minute hat trick; Wolves were 5 up and poor Boro were going down with a whimper. There was time though for them to get 1 consolation as Kink scored in the 81st minute it was nowhere near enough though for them or us.

Review:

A valiant effort against United in the cup, progress by our reserve side in the Kent Cup and major dissapointment in the league. To go 31 games unbeaten you should be up; there should be no doubt about it. We though drew far to many games and that cost us. Defensively we were not strong enough and maybe our play was at times too attacking. In the playoffs we will face Southampton who unsurpringly this year we drew against twice.

2013/14 Playoffs Round up

Southampton 2-2 Charlton (Playoff Semi Final 1st Leg)

This game probably sums up our season. Dominate games but let in stupid goals before salvaging a draw late on. Dimitar Iliev gave the Saints the perfect start after 4 minutes before we took control of possession and created a host of chances. Unfortunately we failed to take them and a minute before the interval Morgan Schneiderlin grabbed Southampton's 2nd. 14 minutes from time though he started our fightback when he turned home Joshua John's cross into his own net. 6 minutes later John grabbed a goal himself before Bradley Wright-Phillips saw an 89th minute effort ruled out.

Charlton 1-0 (3-2) Southampton (Playoff Semi Final 2nd Leg)

A neat and tidy performance saw us progress to the final thanks to Jordan Cousins 37th minute header. Rather than going all oput attack we played a disciplined game in this contest and it paid dividends with a clean sheet a win.

In the other semi Blackpool beat Derby 3-1 in both legs to progress 6-2 on aggreagte. In our 2 meetings this season we won 1 and drew 1 including an epic 4-4 at Bloomfield Road.

Charlton Vs Blackpool (Playoff Final)

12 months ago we were here against Cardiff; this year we were back determined to make up for last year's pain. This match saw the division's 2 highest scoring teams come head to head. It was a bit of a surprise then that at half-time the game was 0-0 and pretty woeful. With 12 shots in the match so far and only 1 on target 8 all off target for us and 4 with 1 on for the Tangerines.

In the 2nd half the game started to pick up and both sides starting actually trying to win the game. When shots did hit the target though Matt Gilks and Ben Hamer were in superb form. 20 minutes from time Blackpool looked to have broken the deadlock but Danny Graham's effort was ruled out for offside. 9 minutes later though and finally there was a goal Dale Stephens layed in Vivaldy Donkor and the young french winger fired home beyond Gilks and into the net. Time was now the Blackpool enemy they pushed forward but Hamer would not be beaten; time was up and after 7 seasons away Charlton were back in the Premier League.

Chatham 1-3 Charlton (Kent Senior Cup Final)

Squad Review

Goalkeepers

Hamer 56 Apps - 12 Clean Sheets, 7.07 Rating

Johnstone 4 Apps, 2 Clean Sheets, 6.88 Rating

A good season from Hamer who proved himself again. I'm not sure if he is going to be up to the Premier League but he deserves his chance.

Defenders

Jenkinson 27(12) Apps, 1 Goal, 7.15 Rating

Cousins 57 Apps, 8 Goals, 7.22 Rating

Fox 1(2) Apps, 6.85 Rating

Morrison 51(1) Apps, 10 Goals, 7.22 Rating

Taylor 11(5) Apps, 1 Goal, 6.85 Rating

Solly 32 Apps, 7.01 Rating

Naylor 27(2) Apps, 6.95 Rating

Wiggins 28 Apps, 7.06 Rating

Jordan Cousins and Michael Morrison continued their fine partnership in the heart of our defense and both will have the opportunity to perform in the top flight. Cousins is now starting to attract the big boys and it might be hard to keep hold of him for to much longer. Chris Solly had another good season at right back and I feel comfortable with him heading into next season. At left back Rhoys Wiggins can't play a whole season and signing another left back is a priority.

Midfielders

Poyet 1(2) Apps, 6.85 Rating

Wagstaff 37 Apps, 14 Goals, 7.19 Rating

Jackson 35(10) Apps, 9 Goals, 7.15 Rating

Bailey 6(15) Apps, 1 Goal, 6.89 Rating

Hollands 53 Apps, 6.91 Rating

Stephens 47(1), 11 Goals, 7.36 Rating

Green 1(1) Apps, 2 Goals, 7.65 Rating

John 31(7) Apps, 12 Goals, 7.37 Rating

Gomez 48(3) Apps, 7 Goals, 7.05 Rating

Asghari 6 Apps, 1 Goal, 6.82 Rating

Halliday 8(8) Apps, 3 Goals, 7.12 Rating

Donkor 16 Apps, 7 Goals, 7.23 Rating

Dale Stephens in the middle was absoloutely superb for us whilst Danny Hollands was also dependable. I'm not sure on Hollands at the next level though and signing a Central Midfielder his high on my list. On the wings Scott Wagstaff, Joshua John and Johnnie Jackson all contributed well. Jackson is out of contract though and is probably going to be released.

Forwards

Kermogant 6 Apps, 7.22 Rating

Kane 5(21) Apps, 5 Goals, 6.88 Rating

Hayes 4(4) Apps, 1 Goal, 6.88 Rating

Wright-Phillips 52 Apps, 34 Goals, 7.25 Rating

Azeez 0(1) App, 5.90 Rating

Cela 1(3) Apps, 6.43 Rating

Bradley Wright-Phillips was the top scorer in the division and will lead our attack in the Premier League. He needs help though and none of the other Strikers we currently have inspire me with confidence.

Rainer Fuchsenthaler (DRC) - £775k from Basel

Titouan Morel (DC) - £575k from Anderlecht

Vaclav Cerny (AML) - £650k from Sparta Prague

Greg Cunningham (DL) - Free from Man City

Marcel Risse (AMRL) - £6.5m from Mainz

Gabriel Messa (ST) - £2m from Boca Juniors

Tomas Podstawski (MC) - Free from Porto

All the players bar Jackson that were released were back up players so we shouldn't miss them. The majority of the players we've signed are 19 or younger(6). After trying to sign a few players released from Premier League clubs it became clear the wage demands were stupidly high so I headed to Central and Eastern Europe on a shopping trip. With the exception of Risse all of the players we've signed i'm confident I will make a decent profit on a few years down the line if I sell them. Turna should be a very good keeper and Podstawski was a bit a coup as he turned down 21 other teams from around europe to sign for us.

Financially the club made a £1.6m loss but that included almost £1m that was spent on upgarding the youth facilities at the club.

2014/15 Season Preview

2014 World Cup

Brazil beat Spain to lift the trophy after seeing off England in the semis. England finished 3rd after beating Germany.

Predictions/Expectations

Following our promotion the only aim this season is to survive.

Board Expectations:

League: Survive

Fa Cup: 5th Round

League Cup: 3rd Round

Kent Cup: Unimportant

Media Prediction: 19th

Odds: 2000/1

The media think we're going down but at least they think we will finish above Wolves so that's something I guess.

Pre Season

Welling 0-1 Charlton

Presov 0-4 Charlton

Zlate Moravce 1-4 Charlton

Charlton 2-1 Lille

Charlton 0-0 Vitesse (5-4 on pens)

We started pre season with our yearly contest against Welling. Following that we headed to Slovakia for 2 games and 2 wins before returning home to take part in the Valley Vase where we beat Lille in the Semis before despatching Vitesse on penalties in the final after they had overcome Kaiserslauten in their semi. Now comes the hard bit with the league and it doesn't get much harder than the start we have been given. Our first 4 games are against Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea & Man City, if we get anything from those games it will be a decent start.

Review:

A decent start to the season 7 points from 6 games and considering 5 of those games were against teams that last season finished in the top 7 i'm pretty happy. We were outclassed by Arsenal and in the 1st half against Fulham but otherwise we've done ourselves proud. We we're the better side against Man Utd for large parts and could have won. We really should have got something against City but 2 goals in the final 9 minutes denied us an upset. How we didn't score against Chelsea i'll never know and then after probably the worst 45 minutes of the season so far against Fulham we told the players their performance was unnaceptable and they produced a fantastic 2nd half effort to turn it around. The Liverpool performance though was probably our best yet as we cut their defense to ribbons. In all honesty i'm quite happy were out of the League cup we played a weakened side in both games and at least we actually won a game this year to improve my record in the competition to Won 1 Lost 4.

Come on you Addicks! :D

Another club I have a soft spot for. I used to work with someone who was a huge Charlton fan and so I know the history of the Club etc.! He indoctrinated me into the Charlton ways. :D

You should also know that I was at the Valley to witness an extremely important historical moment in the Club's history. Yes, that's right, I saw Kevin Lisbie (KEVIN LISBIE!) score a hat-trick against Liverpool.

Seeing Lisbie score was a rarity; that hat trick was simply unbelieveable. The blessed few of us who were there that day will certainly never forget it.

Review:

Another solid couple of months for us sees us for the moment staying out of trouble in the league. Dissapointed to lose late on against Newcastle considering we led for so long and missed a host of chances. Good wins though over Blackburn and Sunderland were the highlight along with the draw at Goodison where we came from behind 3 times. A backup side also made it through to the Kent Cup Quarter final unfortunately though in the Fa Cup 3rd round we have been given a difficult draw away to Aston Villa.

Review:

Not a brilliant couple of months as our defense decided to go on holiday. Some of our performances at the back were shocking and we had Michal Turna to thank for making sure some the scores didn't get into double figures. The defeats to Man Utd and Arsenal were humiliating and we were totally outclassed; showing me just how far we have to go before we can start thinking about pushing on further. Progress in the Fa Cup and the win over Tottenham were the highlights. We are still pretty clear of trouble and a top half finish is certainly not beyond us.

A decent couple of months to end the season apart from the defeat to Tottenham. Dissapointed to go out in the Fa Cup semis again but Arsenal are better than us and I didn't really think we had a great chance. Completed the season with a comfortable victory and our 3rd Kent cup in a row.

2014/15 End of Season Round Up

2014/15 Winners

Premier League: Man City

Fa Cup: Newcastle

League Cup: Arsenal

Champions League: Real Madrid

Europa League: Sevilla

2014/15 Squad

Goalkeepers

Ben Hamer started the season as first choice and did ok but let in a few to many goals so I eventually made the switch to Michal Turna. He quite easily could be our number 1 keeper for the next 10+ years. He has developed really well this season and will start next year as our starter.

Defenders

Rainer Fuchsenthaler was a revelation at right back quickly replacing Chris Solly as the starter. For the money we paid for him and given his age he looks as if he will be a real bargain. Jordan Cousins development at centre back continued and alongside him Michael Morrison did ok. Adding some depth at the heart of the defense though is a priority for the summer transfer window though. Greg Cunningham looks another inspired signing considering he didn't cost us a thing he came in a nd performed admirably at left back.

Midfielders

Tomas Podstawski played well in the centre of midfield and he was supported well by Dale Stphens, Milan Smiljanic and Danny Hollands. Finding a really good ball winning midfierlder though to play alongside him though is another priority for me. In the attacking roles Scott Wagstaff was fantastic on the right; Marcel Risse made the left wing position his own and Mojtaba Asghari's development in the central role was very encouraging.

Forwards

Up front Bradley Wright-Phillips on the whole maintained his form from the previous 3 seasons. Gabriel Mesa is developing nicely and I will be trying to get him more involved in the 1st XI next season. Duje Cop struggled when he first arrived and has struggled to really make the impact I was hoping for but hopefully he will do better in season 2.

Finances

We managed to make a £1.3m profit for the season despite spending money improving the youth and training facilities and also installing undersoil heating whilst we are also increasing our capacity to just over 35000, up around 8000 on our current maximum attendance.

2015/16 Season Preview

Transfers In

Vadis Odjidja (MC) - £6m Everton

Daniele Rugani (DC) - £3.5m Genoa

Evgeny Saitov (AMRC) - £4m Spartak Moscow

Odjidja played pretty well for Everton last season despite them being relegated and he comes straight into the side to partner Podstawski in the centre of midfield. He is a tough tackling midfielder who should help protect our back 4 and hopefully reduce the amount of goals we concede. Rugani should start alongside Jordan Cousins in the heart of the defense. He has decent attributes and has played well over the past 2 years; with the bonus that he is only 20 years old he and Cousins could become our starting Centre backs for the next few years. Saitov gives us another attacking option; he can play on the right or just behind the striker. With Jordi Gomez not getting any younger 19 year old Saitov is another player for the future but also the present.

Transfers Out

Danny Hollands - Contract Expired, released

Andy Halliday - Contract Expired, released

Would love to have kept Hollands around but he was becoming a less important player and with the Odjidja signing he wasn't really needed anymore. Halliday did ok for us whilst he was here but never really played a massive amount of games and we won't miss him to much.

Review:

A really good start to the season; only 2 defeats and 6 wins including victories over Arsenal and Man City. Gabriel Mesa and Scott Wagstaff have both started the season on fire. The new signings have also started well Vadis Odjidja has fitted in well; Daniele Rugani unfortunately has suffered a knee injury and will miss the next couple of months whilst Evgeny Saitov has been doing ok for us as well.

Review:

A fantastic couple of months for us; the cups being the obvious highlight. A great run in the league cup has seen us make our 1st ever final in the competition where we will take on Newcastle. Still in the Fa cup as well after victories over Forest and Wolves who must be sick of the sight of us. In the league we have maintained our decent start and our aim of improving on last season's 8th place is definitely still possible.

Review:

Another couple of fantastic couple of months sees us lift our first ever League cup after a thriller against Newcastle and progress to the Fa cup semis for the 3rd season in a row. The only dissapointment about that is we have been drawn to face Man City as oppose to Championship sides Burnley and leicester who face off in the other game. In the league we are looking good to beat last season's 8th place although our run in does see us away from home for 4 of our last 5 league games.

Review:

An up and down end to the season as we suffered crushing defeats at Chelsea and Villa whilst also crashing out of the fa Cup for the 3rd year in a row at the Semi Final stage. We did however come from 2 down to get a point against Liverpool and won in Blackpool whilst lifting the Kent Cup for the 4th consecutive season.

2015/16 Season Review

2015/16 Winners

Premier League: Man Utd

Fa Cup: Leicester

League Cup: Charlton

Champions League: Porto

Europa League: Chelsea

2015/16 Squad

Goalkeepers

Michal Turna's fine development continued; he is very much our number 1 keeper now and hopefully will be for the next few years. He was alos called into the slovakia squad during the season and picked up his first caps. Ben Hamer is starting to grow unhappy and I may let him move on during the summer.

Defenders

Our defense was much improved this year; Fuchsenthaler is developing really well at right back and with our first choice central defensive pairing of Jordan cousins and Daniele Rugani both 21 they can surely only get better. Greg cunningham's place at left back though is vulnerable and will be 1 of the positions I look to strengthen.

Midfielders

The Centre of midfield is another area pretty set for the next couple of years with Tomas Podstawski and Vadis Odjidja playing pretty well. Podstawski also got international recognition as he picked up his first caps for Portugal. In the attacking roles Marcel Risse, Mojtaba Asghari and Evgeny Saitov all did well for me whilst Scott Wagstaff also filled in admirably when called upon. We do however need some more depth with Joshua John and Jordi Gomez likely heading for the exit.

Forwards

Gabriel Mesa' s form has been great all year and he will lead our line next season. Bradley Wright-Phillips is starting to struggle to stay fit and duje Cop has not worked out for us so far. 1 or 2 new strikers are likely to be added to the squad as we look to now push on and try and challenge for a top 4 spot whilst also competing in europe for the first time since the days of the Anglo Italian Cup.

Finances

The club made a profit of just over £8m for the season, £6.5m of that is now going to be spent on increasing the capacity of the ground to 40,600 an increase of around 5,000 seats. The decision to increase the capacity for the 2nd year in a row was made after we sold out 15 of our 19 home games this season.

2016/17 Summer Round Up & Season Preview

2016 European Championships

There was good news for Tomas Podstawski as he came on in the 66th minute as Portugal beat Belarus 4-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw to lift the european Championships. Portugal had previously beaten England 4-0 in the semi finals.

Transfers In

Ibrahima Traore 19 y/o (ST) - Free - Lens

Patrick Muller 18 y/o (GK) - Free - Schalke

Jose Cristavao 19 y/o (DL) - Free - Braga

Carlos Marti 21 y/o (DR) - Free - Sevilla

Arne Hille 18 y/o (DL) - Free - Gladbach

Hugo Fernandez 20 y/o - £4m - Boca

Transfers Out

Jordi Gomez, Contract expired - Released

Rhoys Wiggins, Contract expired - Released

Bradley Wright-Phillips, Contract expired - Released

Chris Solly, Contract expired - Released

Joshua John, Contract expired - Released

Titouan Morel - £2.5m - Racing

Ben Hamer - £750,000 - Chelsea

Duje Cop - £1m - Fulham

We continued our move towards younger players by bringing in 6 players all 21 or younger. Out went some of our more experienced players Jordi Gomez and Bradley wright-Phillips had been good servants but ultimately they had started to decline and we need to get better if we are going to push on. Rhoys Wiggins and Chris Solly had spent the last 2 seasons as backups and were no longer required. Ben Hamer had become unhappy with being number 2 to Michal Turna and so we let him go; whilst the signing of Duje Cop hadn't really worked out. I was sorry to see Morel go but the offer was to good to turn down especially considering we only paid £575k for him 2 years ago.

Up front we had to provide competition for Gabriel Mesa who was the subject of a £15m bid from Arsenal - not bad for a guy we signed for only £2m 2 years ago. We decided to reject the offer though and went back to Mesa's old club to sign young striker Hugo Fernandez who I have high hopes for. Ibrahima Traore we signed to a 1 year deal following his release from Lens and depending on how he does he may get an extension. Jose Cristavao provides a big upgrade for us at left back and will immediately step into a starting role. Patrick Muller is a decent young keeper with potential much like Turna was when I signed him. I will look to try and give him some first team action in some of the cup competitions to help him develop. Carlos Marti will backup Rainer Fuchsenthaler at right back whilst Arne Hille will backup Cristavao at left back as Greg Cunningham will miss the first 3 months of the season through injury.

Board Expectations

Premier League: Top Half

Fa Cup: Quarter Final

League Cup: Quarter Final

Kent Cup: Not Important

Europa League: Group Stage

Media Prediction: 8th

Title Odds: 150/1

For me this season is about improving the squad of young players we have here. Only 4 of the team are 26 or older so this is a team that should get a lot better, quickly if it develops in the right way. I would love to improve on last season's 6th place and although breaking the top 4 will be difficult I don't think it's impossible if we could finish 5th though I would be happy given we will likely be playing more games this season due to our involvement in Europe.

Review:

A good start to the season as we grab 7 points from our opening 3 matches to leave us 4th in the table. It probably should have been 3 wins from 3 but we failed to put the game away at 1-0 and Sunderland punished us. A good start in Europe as we made it 4 wins from 4 and cruised into the Europa League group stage. In the group we will face German's Schalke, Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv and LASK Linz from Austria. Looking at the 3 sides on paper us and Schalke are the favourites to progress and we meet in the 1st group game in Germany. In the League Cup 3rd Round draw we head to the Hawthorns to take on West Brom.
