Liverpool left-back Stephen Warnock has been called up in his place. "Ashley has had to pull out," said coach Sven-Goran Eriksson. "He took a scan and has stress fracture and will be out for one month at least." Captain David Beckham missed training on Tuesday to be with his ill son Romeo but will join the squad on Wednesday. Striker Michael Owen was also absent as he recovers from the dead leg that forced him to force Newcastle's game against Portsmouth on Saturday - but he is expected to be fit to play. Eriksson said that the loss of Cole was a blow but that he had plenty of alternatives. "We have a lot of options there, Jamie Carragher is one, Warnock is another, Kieran Richardson is playing left-back for Manchester United at this moment," he said. "But it is a pity to lose Ashley Cole, probably the best left-back in the world. Slightly Damp Shrew
Surely we won't be signing bouba, what with him being both able and willing to shoot from outside the area? £5mill-£9mill would be about right, and knowing Arsene there'd be a lot of appearance conditions and the like. Jerome
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> Feyenoord midfielder Hossam Ghaly wants the chance to replace Patrick Vieira at Arsenal. The Egypt international has been linked with a January move to Highbury after falling out with Feyenoord coach Erwin Koeman. Ghaly has been warned he must toe the line at De Kuip or risk being shipped out when the transfer window reopens in the New Year. Koeman doubts whether the 23-year-old can mend his ways and that has sparked talk of a £3 million switch to Arsenal. The Gunners are yet to find a suitable successor to Vieira, after the midfield powerhouse left the FA Cup holders for Juventus during the summer. Arsene Wenger has been happy to fill the void with the players he has at his disposal but could be tempted to gamble on Ghaly to add further depth to his squad. Ghaly has witnessed the impact Robin van Persie has made in North London and wants to follow his former Feyenoord team-mate to The Premiership. "I have one big wish and that is to play for my dream team Arsenal," said Ghaly. "They play the most beautiful football in the world - technical, fast, one-touch - and it is magnificent to watch. "Robin van Persie is lucky playing for such a huge team. That isn't jealousy, he deserves the best. "We get along well and above all he is one of the best players I have ever played alongside." </div></BLOCKQUOTE> Ghaly has potential and if there's one person who can manage that he fullfills his potential is Wenger, it'll be very hard to do that, but Wenger has done that before and can do that again.. Father Senegal
Peter Hill-Wood, the Arsenal chairman, has revealed that he opposed his club's pursuit of Chelsea last season in the Ashley Cole tapping-up case and says that every club are guilty of illegally approaching players. Hill-Wood told me he was a minority when the Arsenal board decided to pursue Chelsea over the affair leading to a high-profile Premier League hearing at the end of last season which saw Chelsea and Cole fined and much acrimony between the clubs and also between Arsenal and Cole. Hill-Wood said: "I'd rather we had handled it differently. But the majority of the board felt we had to do something. These matters are not voted on. We didn't agree and I went along quietly. We know this sort of thing [tapping up] goes on all the time. All clubs do it, though Chelsea were rather blatant about it. But I have no ill-feeling towards Chelsea". He was also generous to the club who are now dominating the Premiership and denied this was causing problems. "I don't think Chelsea are making the Premier League boring. You always have complaints when one club is dominant. Smaller clubs used to complain about us and Manchester United. "I'm not remotely jealous about Chelsea. Chelsea's strength is that [Jose] Mourinho has turned out to be a very competent coach. Whether he is better than Arsene Wenger or not I am not able to judge. Wenger has been with us for nine years and we have never finished lower than second. I'd rather have Wenger." Apart from buying Alexander Hleb, Wenger has made no purchases and has done nothing to replace Patrick Vieira but Hill-Wood denied that this was due to the strain of financing the new stadium at Ashburton Grove. Arsenal's recently released financial figures for the year ended May 31, 2005, show the strain of funding the £400 million project. With football- related turnover static at £115 million (media revenue is down while the commercial revenues are up) the interest bill on the £225 million gross debt was £14 million or 40 per cent of all match-day revenues. Hill-Wood said: "We have money in the bank [£63 million] and Wenger can buy if he wants to. But Arsene Wenger is not going to buy players to make up numbers. He wants players who can play in the Champions League and, apart from Hleb, he has not found anyone." Wenger and Arsenal would love to complete a new deal for Theirry Henry, whose contract runs out in 2007, but Hill-Wood said: "We tried to open talks but he wants to wait until the summer." Arsenal now have a playing staff of just 61, their smallest for five years and Sunday's programme showed the contrast between Arsenal and Birmingham. The 31 names in the Birmingham squad were squeezed on to a page while Arsenal's 24 first-team squad players were spread out to fill the page. Arsenal have had to provide £11 million as possible future tax liability as a result of a recent House of Lords decision which affects how they pay some of their overseas players. Employee benefit trusts were set up and this trust paid some of the players' offshore, thus avoiding UK tax. In 1979 Arsenal tried to pay David O'Leary through a Hambros Channel Island Trust Corporation on which O'Leary, an Irish citizen, claimed he did not have to pay tax. The courts ruled he had to and Hill Wood-said: "This is nothing like the arrangements we made with O'Leary. The payments to the players were made by the trust and it was perfectly legal. But this decision makes these schemes suspect." He is equally relaxed about the next television deal, which may see live television rights go to a channel other than Sky. "It's very complicated," he said. It might not all be on Sky. But that won't worry me" Hill-Wood, who is 70, also denied media reports that he had any plans to retire. "Oh that old chestnut. I have no plans to retire at present." Some interesting bits in there.

José_9_Reyes
Jay-Z In Talks To Purchase Stake In London Soccer Team By EbenGregory Date: 10/9/2005 3:53 pm In a move to expand his increasing business empire, Jay-Z is said to be reportedly in talks to buy a piece of the famed London soccer team, Aresenal FC. Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) has purportedly been in negotiations with Aresenal front office brass to purchase a big stake in the London squad. Originally a team of munitions workers from southeast London before moving to north London, the Aresenal’s aka the “Gunners†have won five English league titles and two F.A. cups. Now under the guidance of Frenchman Arsène Wenger, it is potentially entering a second golden age as one of Europe's most exciting attacking teams. If cemented, the deal would be another successful business notch under the Brooklyn entrepreneur’s belt. Known for his business acumen, Jay-Z has currently enjoying a string of fruitful business deals as of late. He is currently developing his own S. Carter high-end clothing line, and in the spring he introduced a collaboration with Swiss luxury-watch maker Audemars Piguet. In addition, Carter’s Rocawear clothing brand is generating some $400 million a year in sales. (Carter and partners recently bought out co-founder Dash for an estimated $25 million.) Although Carter has mainly orchestrated his deals behind the scenes, his business accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. The business community recognized Jay-Z’s savvy earlier this year when he was received the British GQ’s International Man of the Year award. He also was recently featured on the cover of the well-respected financial business magazine, Fortune.
