FM16 Comprehensive Tactics Comparison - Which came out on top?!

Recommended Posts

"This is ridiculous!", "I have tried everything!", "How has that happened!", "Stupid bloody game!"

Like me I'm sure many of you have experienced these sorts of sayings since FM16 was released. Having thought I had cracked it first time on a Network game getting Basingstoke promoted through the play-offs. I gloated with a huge smug grin to my brother and mates as they were sacked or had to settle for mid-table mediocrity in the Vanarama National South. Only to have smug turn to despair in the space of 2 months as I was sacked with just 5 points to my name at the bottom of the table. Exasperated I scoured these forums for help only to struggle to settle on anything decent. Meanwhile on the game after a few months out of work I was offered the Altrincham job. 1 win from my first 6 again had me frustrated as they were 6th in the league when I took over. You may not be surprised to know that win came over, yep you guessed it, Basingstoke sat at the bottom of the league still!

So I vowed to find the answer. I decided to test out 5 of the main tactics being touted in the forum as a possible answer to the most riddl-y of riddles. As I needed an answer for Lower League I decided to take on AFC Telford and take them on with no transfers to make it more of a fair test. Of course injuries and form make a difference but the tactic and its success would play a role in them. The test period ended up being over 17 games. I didn't play the cup games so in some you may see that there were a few more cup games than others. I tested them in the following order and shall report and include screenshots in the following order:

DISCLAIMER

Now before you read on to the reports please remember this. At no point am I suggesting any of these are 'good' or 'bad' tactics. I have no doubt that they can be made to work in certain situations with the right tools etc. I am simply reporting the facts that I found. All tactics creators should be given significant credit for creating tactics, testing them and then sharing them with what can be a rather hostile and grabby community at times. For that I say thank you to all of those that have created and shared tactics over the years. You make the FM experience that little easier for many.

Finally I do not claim that I have found the best tactic for Football Manager or that I am trying to plug any as such. I am simply reporting the findings of my little test.

Now to the results. According to the final table (as this apparently never lies) the tactics ranked in the following order:

1st - USV 4-3-3 - 4th, 31 points, 5 GD

2nd - Testudo - 6th, 26 points, 5 GD

3rd - Press & Pass - 10th, 25 points, 7 GD

4th - 4-3-3 Bayern - 15th, 21 points, -4 GD

5th - Bulgarian Honeymoon V1 - 17th, 20 points, -3 GD

6th - Bulgarian Honeymoon V2 - 18th, 20 points, -3 GD

7th - Goalazo - 18th, 20 points, -6 GD

8th - Dawnbringer 4-5-1 - 18th, 18 points, 0 GD

Congrats Statistical Approach. :applause:

I appreciate the work you put into testing our tactics but honestly, I don't think the results say anything about the quality of the tactics, aside from what works well with YOUR TEAM and YOUR PLAYERS in the league you're playing at. Every team is built different and while something may work with a lower league team it may not work for a Premiership team (and vice versa). Also, a 17 game test run is quite short as it can be heavily influenced by things like injuries, morale, tactical fluidity or form.

To have valid tests it would probably a lot of effort as each tactic should be tested with different teams on different levels (maybe even in different countries) for at least a full season.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate you testing our tactics, I just don't think the results can be seen as anything else than what works in your specific conditions (players, team, league).

I agree burnum. I put that in the first post.

To be fair, none of them look that great in terms of shape/roles or instructions anyway. Dawnbringer amuses me, it lacks a midfield completely!

Fair enough. Although on past FM's some of the odd Asymmetrical tactics and the like have been very successful. The Dawnbringer tactic is the 4-5-1 version so has a very heavy midfield! :)

But it doesn't... 1 striker, 2 AMC's who will be positioned high and thus have to track back into midfield. The two genuine midfielders are both ball winners who basically go missing. I'd go exploit right flank, direct passing and just bypass the lot (plus the FB on attack) for a simple cross to win. >_>

In theory anyway!

Just as a matter of interest, can you rerun mine with V1 of the tactic

just interested to see as V2 is what I am using in the Championship and V1 might be better suited lower down

:D

Very unlucky not to come higher. The last few games should have been won comfortably only for some bad luck. Especially in a number of totally random own goals that cost points.
