Pompeyboyz
*****DISCLAIMER***** This is not a plug and play tactic so don’t expect absolute immediate results. Let your team get used to it*****DISCLAIMER***** I have been playing Football Manager/Championship Manager since the very first game came out back in the 90’s and for the most part I have always used other peoples’ tactics. Most recently I have looked at Mr U Rosler and Mr Houghs tactics for success. But this year I decided to try my hand at creating something myself and think I have come up with a decent tactic that seems to tick plenty of the good boxes with strong attack, mean defence and plenty of possession. I am not claiming to have created the golden tactic that will make you the next Arsenal and going unbeatable but it will make your team a viable title threat. Oh and in case you are wondering about the tactic name, for those of you that watched the FM Documentary, I am that guy that took his wife to Bulgaria due to Football Manager The Tactic The idea behind this tactic was to have the defenders create a 3 man wall that is difficult for the opposition to breach through the middle. The Wingbacks will be marauding up and down the wings creating space to try and get crosses in, so they will be quite creative. The two Ball Winning Midfielders should help breakdown any play in the midfield by closing down fast onto the opposition, thus limited the time they have on the ball. Should they win the ball back they will then look to the Wingbacks for starting the attack back up. The attacking trio of the Shadow Striker, Advanced Playmaker and False 9 should create a bit of confusion in the opposition defence for who and how to mark. The False 9 should drop back, pulling defenders with him while the Shadow Striker will fill the gap the F9 leaves behind and the AP will create the chances for them to take. That was the theory, and for the most part it works. Team Instructions The reasoning behind the TI that I have employed is to try and retain possession without using the retain possession instruction which I feel holds back the flow too much. The Play out of Defence is to stop long hoofs up the field which would lead to probable lost possession. Although only employing Wingbacks, the attacking trio have Move into Channels Player Instructions, either by default or manually added, to provide the support from the Wingbacks so the overlap works. The work the ball in to the box is there as this tactic creates plenty of chances and it is better to make sure that they are good ones than wasted. Player Instructions I have used the default PI’s for the most part aside from the following exceptions. Wingbacks I wanted the Wingbacks to be more the creator and less attacking in the final third, hence the shoot less often and fewer risky passes. Shadow Striker The Roam from Position was added to try and get him to be more of a distraction to the opposition if they try and mark him. Advanced Playmaker Again the Roam from Position was added to allow him to distract the opposition with the move into channels added as mentioned for supporting the Wingbacks for the overlaps. False Nine The natural inclination of the False Nine is for supporting the attacking threat and creating chances. I wanted to try and get my striker to be a bit greedier and take the chances he gets. Limited Defender (Central of three) I wanted this player to be the linchpin of the back three, and stop any breakthroughs by the opposition strikers. For this I added the hold position instruction to stop him from roaming and opening up space. Player Attributes For the most part I have used the default suggestions within the game for what attributes to look for, with each position. What I would recommend though are the following: Wingbacks: Focus in the Pace, Acceleration, Crossing and Dribbling as primary attributes to be as high as possible. Ideally, you also want your Passing to be good as well. Defenders: The obvious of Tackling, Marking, Positioning but also, I recommend getting fast defenders with double digit Pace and Acceleration even in League 2. Ball Winning Midfielders: Tackling, Positioning and Passing are a must for me on these. Further Tactical Advice One of the tactics potential weaknesses is from the Wingbacks leaving the flanks open if higher up the field and the opposition counter attacking and trying to breakaway. However, that is only a weakness if the opposition plays ML/R or AML/R alongside DL/R as it can lead to overlaps and creating crosses. To try combatting that, I will get the WBL/R to man mark the opposing ML/R or AML/R so the overlap can be stopped before it begins. Also, if playing a stronger team or one using a very similar tactical base with a back 3 and 2 Wingbacks, I will swap to Counter Mentality. I have tried swapping the False Nine to an Attacking Deep Lying Forward and that can lead to more goals from the SC but less chances to the SS and AP. In the next Pre-Season I run through, I am also going to experiment with swapping the Wingbacks to Complete Wingbacks. In terms of OI, I just use the AssMans suggestions. However, make sure your AssMan has a high Tactical Knowledge attribute to get better suggestions. Team talks Pre Game I will look to assertively tell the team I expect a win. At half time, if I am 3-0 up or better, I will passionately praise them. Any other score where I am not losing, I will assertively encourage. If losing, I aggressively question the passion. Any player with a 6-6.4 rating at half time, I individually calmly ‘have faith’. Anyone less than 6 I aggressively tell them I am disappointed. At Full time, if I win by a 1-2 goal margin, I will calmly say good win. Wins by greater margins will be passionately praised. Anything less than a win will be aggressively told it was unacceptable. The exception is if I lose in a cup game to a higher division team and a narrow defeat will be given a calm ‘unlucky’ Players with a rating of 8 or higher will be individually passionately praised. Players with a rating of 6.0 and below will be aggressively criticised. Training In Pre-season, arrange as many friendlies as possible leaving 1 week free between the last one and the first competitive match. Set your Main focus to Fitness (very high) and the match preparation to tactics. Set the slider to mostly Main Focus. After 1 month change the main focus to Team Cohesion (high) and reduce the slider down one notch towards match preparation. After a further month, change to Balanced (average) and set the slider 1 notch past the middle towards match preparation. Keep the Match Preparation on Tactics until you are at least accomplished overall and then change to attacking movement for the remainder of the season. A couple of people have tested this tactic by building it up themselves from the screenshots above and have reported excellent results. I used this tactic in League 1 with a fairly good Portsmouth side from early October after I was struggling badly and ended up winning the JP Trophy and reached the playoffs(Top 2 were too far away in the end). Someone has used it with Hearts in Scotland and another with Wisla Krakow in Poland. If you do use it, post your feedback as I would love to know how it plays in other leagues. Certainly be interesting to see how it works with a top side like Barcelona or Bayern Munich who would be able to properly fill the specialist roles. BayernMB
I've tried this your tactics from another thread - built in based on your screenshots. Have you done any changes? It works really good for me.
Pompeyboyz
Only changes I have tried are playing counter attacking more often and occasionally removing the work the ball in to the box TI but keeping it as is. Which team you played with? Bayern Munich?
BayernMB
Yes with Bayern - but I'm a bit further into the game, so the original players are almost all gone... just released Neuer and Mueller this year. For me the tactic is excellent at the back and very good in the front - I lost a couple of times when I had more possession and chances, but it happens with every tactics. Pompeyboyz
Really pleases it is proving successful with a top.team. how have you done in the CL using it?
BayernMB
So far I played 1 season with your tactics and I've lost in the semi final. However, my Bayern team is in the middle of rebuilding and I have some players who will most probably be great in the future, but are not there yet currently. It's more than enough to win Bundesliga, bur Paris SG really has a team packed with world class players. However - for me the match preparation "teamwork" seems to be working better than "attacking movement". Also I turned off opposition instructions. I played this way based on your first thread and changed the instructions like you suggested in this thread. But for me, that made things (slightly) worse. Octavianus[GER]
Have seen your passion for OFK Nesebar and just wanted to share it with you now that I know your SI username. I've played a quite successful save with Nesebar a long time ago and got hooked. I even managed to win Uefa Cup in FM06 with Nesebar although it was a very tough season. But with the help of someone called Alexis Sánchez Nesebar ruled Europe (well at least Uefa Cup). Later I've visited their stadium twice and have seen them playing (and winning! Yeah!). Unfortunately they still play in Yugoiztochna V grupa. Hopefully they can claim promotion this year, looks good so far: http://bulgarian-football.com/yugoiztochna-v-grupa.html On topic: Tactic looks interesting too. Sorry for being so much offtopic. Pompeyboyz
BayernMB thanks for sharing what you have tried with match prep and OI. I am sure that even with your team in rebuilding it is far superior to my second season Portsmouth team. So your choices might be better for a better team. Octavianus nice to have someone else that has been to the stadium in Nesebar

Pompeyboyz
In the download link I have change the F9 to DLF(a) as it suits my first choice SC Also if you play against a team with the only wide players being DL and DR, switch on exploit left and right flanks as it'll give your WB's greater possession and time to create chances
Pompeyboyz
Quick update on how this tactic performs. These 2 pre-season matches against decent Premier League sides putting out strong teams.
McGougan33
Ok so let me preface this by saying, I had been struggling for a while with my tactics, even opened up a thread about it to get some advice, it then seemed to work for a season and a half, then all of a sudden completely crashed and burned, morale was still ok and had no major changes to the team, it just seemed to completely stop working. As you can see from the screenshots below, I was in diar straights, I was 9 points behind in the league by 13 games which was completely unusual. From stumbling across your thread about the 3DCS I decided to implement it and see how it played. That was from the St.Johnstone game we won 1-0, I had played with it on attacking for the first 5-6 games, then switched to counter permanently, the results are as follows. So kudos to you mate, you turned my season around, and I have credited you as such in the Celtic thread.

saxon_hook
Just downloaded your tactic and it looks great, however can you clear a few things as the pictures you have posted regarding player roles aren't the same as on the downloaded tactic. Shadow Striker is a Trequartista on the download Is this something you have changed to suit your current squad? Will feed back with how this works in Conference North with Salford
Pompeyboyz
Saxon_Hook I did change the SS to Treq as an experiment for one of my players in my squad to see how it would work, but I have returned to SS now as it works better. Good luck and I look forwards to your report.

FloydRix
Looks very good defensively, I tried it with Real Madrid as a test (tactic was awkward familiarity so I'm guessing this improves with time) 0-0 vs Bayern away, 0-0 vs Atletico away and 0-0 at home vs Levante. Seems to be struggling for goals but that has to be down to the tactic familiarity I'm sure?

Pompeyboyz
I have made a further adjustment to the tactic now with the SC being an AF(a) This was done in my third season where I have been promoted to the Championship and due to financial constraints, am using more or less the same line up as the previous season. The tactic is still effective, but it is harder now that I am playing better teams week in week out.
Mattyc
Been struggling massively in FMT16, so going to give this a go. I've always wanted to venture away from the mush used 4-2-3-1 so this seems like a great alternative. I've never used the advice of the Tactics forum before as I've never really struggled in the way I have in the new game so hopefully this will see some results... Pompeyboyz
I would say that I had better success using the DLF while in league 1 but I have only used the AF for about 5 games in the championship and the SC has got 4 goals so far. UncleAlf
I've been trying out this tactic for 2,5 seasons now in lower leagues. The first season was decent but I didn't manage promotion. I think the problem was I had it set to counter while attacking has proved to be more effective for me. In the second season I managed promotion by playoff from Vanarama north. Now in my first season in Vanarama national I started out really well within a wiff off promotion again but sadly now in january I'm set for the relegation battle. In the season I got promoted I had the best defensive record in the league conceding 37 goals while I also one of the lowest scored goals at 51. Maybe for this level the attacking doesn't really work well, although the defense seems to be fine. I have been running with a deep lying striker, not a false 9 since I haven't really found any player capable of the false 9 role. My strongest players have been the center backs and my weaknesses are the striker and wing backs, although even with weak wing backs they seem to do alright. Thanks for that feedback on your use of the tactic. I started using it in League 1 with quite strong WingBacks. I have been experimenting with the SC being a poacher role in the Championship and it seems to put the SC in better positions to score and he is less likely to pass away than shoot. Might be worth trialling that in the Vanarama.

Pompeyboyz
Question for all the people using this tactic. How is it going for goalscoring in the higher leagues? In the championship, I am defending really well and only the teams in the top 3 are better than me but scoring wise I am only middle of the road. Changing the SC to poacher has made him more of a threat but he is still not firing on all cylinders. Now this might be due to me not having much resource to overhaul my team that were promoted from League 1 as my best striker is the same one who top scored that season and he is top scorer with 11 goals at the halfway stage of the season. Does a higher quality striker make all the difference?
BayernMB
I'm scoring way more than any other team in the league. My F9 striker is also best goalscorer by far.
