What difference does a player Squad Number make?

I know that if a player has a preferred number, assigning him the number would be good for moral.

However, if a player has no preference, what difference does it making when deciding their squad numbers?

I always make sure to give every player their preferred number, if I can, as it only takes a few seconds. Saying that, I can't see I've ever seen it have a miraculous impact on anything that they do. Nor have I ever had anyone throw a strop because they can't have their number.

It's just there so your star striker, who has worn '18' for his entire glittering career, apparently isn't in your first XI when you get a news item about submitting your numbers.

Has anyone ever picked 1-11 since the creation of squad numbers? The only example I can think of was Sven at England.

Lenzar, it's only a recent development that players have set squad numbers. In leagues with less money, it's still usual that 1-11 will start the game.

I think there is a wikipedia on it somewhere.

IMHO the Preferred number thing should annoy some players, as well as famous shirt numbers at individual clubs (such as 7 at Manure, arguably 8/14 at Arsenal and 10 for Argentina)

7, Beckhams number. Used for the creative midfield player, if I remember correctly.

FWIW, my belief of traditional numbers;

1 - GK

2 - RB

3 - LB

5 - CB

6 - CB

7 - right winger

4 - defensive midfielder

8 - attacking midfielder

11 - left winger

9 - forward

10 - forward

I love assigning squad numbers in a certain 'style' makes some fun even if it doesnt have any effect on gameplay

eg i have (GK use 1, 13, 30, 40)

(DL - 3, 23)

(DR - 2, 22)

(DC 6, 5, 16, 15, 25)

(DM - 4, 12, 26)

(MC - 8, 20, 28)

(AMC - 10, 18)

(ML - 14, 24)

(MR - 7, 17, 27)

(TS - 9, 19, 29)

(FS - 11, 21) sometimes use 11 for ML and 14 for striker if they are special player, in homage to Henry

like i say, is only for my personal enjoyment that i set them this way, would hate for the AI to pick numbers for me, maybe a little OCD in me lol

PS - hate that Spanish League makes you use only 1-25, tsk
