New Dawn in a New Land Challenge

Recommended Posts

Welcome to the New Dawn in a New Land Challenge!

This challenge is set in a completely new country, can you achieve success in a nation you know little about?

This new nation, called Nirtania, has been created in the database and will appeal to those who want to attempt a new kind of challenge in an entirely new setting. Having said that, it is a challenge that will appeal to everyone who wants to enjoy success and challenge themselves over an extended period of time, the nation of Nirtania awaits you.

This challenge takes it's inspiration from my AI Experiment - Birth of a New Nation

Map of Nirtania

Football in Nirtania

Football in Nirtania used to be organised into three regional leagues with various divisions in each region before the end of the dictatorship that had controlled Nirtania since the Second World War. Professionalism was banned and the clubs in Nirtania were therefore semi-professional or amateur in status, despite this, they attracted huge crowds who paid very little to watch games.

After the end of the dictatorship, professionalism was legalised and, with football being a massively popular spectator event, money was invested in the game on a scale never before seen. A lot of the stadiums, which were in a state of disrepair, were torn down and new stadiums sprung up around the country as the government invested millions in the game and facilities.

The newly independent Football Federation brought out a blueprint for a nationwide league system of three professional leagues for which clubs had to make applications. The clubs were scored on facilities, success over the last decade in regional competitions, and youth investment to determine the clubs that would play in each of the three league divisions.

16 clubs were awarded places in the Nirtanian Premier Division, the top league in the land, with 12 clubs in the Nirtanian First Division and another 12 in the Nirtanian Second Division. Below that were the regional conferences featuring semi-professional and amateur clubs. The Emperor organised a national cup competition, to be called the Emperors Cup while the Premier Division clubs would also play in the Isoeph Cup, named after an important historical figure, Marshal Isoeph, who had led the successful defence of Nirtanian soil from foreign invaders. The First and Second Division clubs would play in their own cup competition.

The Champions of the NPD enter the Champions League at the First Qualifying Round, second place enter the UEFA Cup at the First Qualifying Round, as do the winners of the Emperors Cup. Third place (or fourth depending on the winners of the Emperors Cup) enters the Inter-Toto Cup.

The Aim

The aim of this challenge is to increase the prestige and reputation of Nirtanian football by being successful in the European club competitions and on the international stage. Therefore the overall goal is to win the Champions League with a Nirtanian club as well as win a major international tournament with the Nirtanian national team.

Other goals to achieve:

- Nirtania's European Co-Efficient ranking as high as possible, preferably top 8 but certainly top 15.

- National team ranked in top 25 of the world (but the higher the better!)

- Your club as one of the top 10 richest clubs in the world.

Different Approaches

As I know different people have different ways of playing football manager, and because people will want to try different things with what is a completely new country for them, there are a number of ways you can go about completing this challenge. Like any good challenge however, there must be some consistency between those taking part, and for that reason, there will be a common starting point, and of course the same overall aim.

Everyone will start the challenge in the Second Division of Nirtanian football; however, even here there is choice.

You can start either with one of the bottom six clubs of the Second Division mentioned below and get straight into the 2007/08 season, or......

You can holiday until 27th April 2008, and then save your game. You then continue the game to see if any clubs that were previously unplayable beat the bottom two clubs of the Second Division in the play-offs and if they do, take over one of those clubs. If the Second Division clubs beat the unplayable clubs, reload your game and repeat until an unplayable club wins a place in the Second Division.

Whichever way you choose, your manager experience must be automatic. The leagues to run are detailed in the game rules below.

After you've taken over a club the objective remains the same, Champions League glory. How you achieve it is up to you, you can move clubs freely or you could take your first club all the way to the Premier Division and then the Champions League, as well as becoming manager of the national team and winning a major international tournament.

You cannot start as the manager of the national team and must get the job by either applying or being offered it but once you do have it you must take Nirtania to glory at either the European Championships or the World Cup.

If you get sacked you can just move to another club or if you want to carry on the small club to big club element, try and get a job with a previously unplayable side that comes into the Second Division.

Once you have achieved Champions League success, an added objective would be to win the Quadruple, the Premier Division, the Isoeph Cup, the Emperor's Cup, and the Champions League in the same season.

Game Rules

The Nirtania database must be used, download it from one of these places: Megaupload; Sendspace; Rapidshare;

The game is to be loaded with all the Nirtanian Leagues playable, (Premier to Second Division) and with a large database (or smaller if preferred). You may run other leagues if you wish, but these are to number a maximum of six and only the top two divisions from each league.

Half of the additional leagues you run must come from the top six leagues in Europe; these are England, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. An added challenge would be running all six of those leagues as your choices.

It is not necessary to run additional leagues to complete, or take part in, this challenge .

Attribute masking and the transfer boxes must be ticked.

Loading all players from Nirtania is permitted and encouraged, you may load all players from England as well as this will help the challenge at the beginning.

There are no restrictions on assigning feeder/parent clubs.

To sign a player, you must be able to scout them, this doesn't mean you have to; just he must be accessible to your scouts. If you have a foreign player on a free transfer who is willing to come on trial, you do not need to be able to scout them.

No external utilities such as Genie Scout, FMM or Mini Scout should be used and the database must be unedited from the one provided and created by me.

The Starting Clubs

The clubs to be considered as the bottom six in the Second Division are:

Club Reputation

The Football Clubs of Nirtania

The Bottom Six Clubs

Atlético Angel

Stadium: Xaphania Way

City: San Angel

Atlético Angel has links with Madrid in Spain and are a small club with the potential to grow, being the second major club in the city of San Angel. Their historic rivalry with the Eagles means the fans of Atlético want to see the team competing with the Eagles and beating them.

Heitaria & Eureka

Stadium: Eureka Park

City: Heitaria

Heitaria & Eureka is the merger of two clubs, in a similar vein to the merger that created Rushden and Diamonds. A small club from a small town, they’ll struggle to survive in the Second Division without competent management and will be hampered by a small fan base that may mean they will run into financial difficulties.

Newton Heath

Stadium: Bank Lane

City: Port Nelson

Newton Heath was formed by Manchester United fans who named the club after the former name of Man Utd when they came to Nirtania from England. A small stadium and a small club means they are likely to struggle in the Second Division.

Old Castle Swifts

Stadium: Aves Park

City: Port Nelson

An old established club that used to have a great deal of success in the Nirtanian regional leagues, they’ve fallen from prominence; can they be restored to their former glory?

Rayleigh Town

Stadium: Fairview Park

City: Rayleigh

A small team from a market town in the countryside, they have some talented youngsters from the excellent youth leagues in the area, but can they survive in the professional leagues?

Rubacava Rangers

Stadium: Calavera Stadium

City: Rubacava

A coastal team, Rangers are the only team from the town of Rubacava and therefore have a fairly large potential fan base if success can be brought to the club. The Skeletons will be looking to establish themselves in the Second Division as a permanent fixture.

Nirtania in Europe

With Nirtania’s Premier Division ranked 46th in Europe and therefore gaining just one Champions league place and two UEFA Cup spots, it would be a long climb up the rankings requiring consistent success by Nirtanian clubs in Europe to push the nation’s allocation into the top 30, where surprisingly the Swedish league is 28th and then up to the Austrian league which is 22nd. The first aim for the NPD will be to rise above Austria and gain a top 20 spot, thereby achieving an extra UEFA Cup spot to give the Nirtanian Premier Division 1 CL spot and 3 UEFA Cup spots.

The hope for the NPD would then be that they can climb into the top 15 and achieve 2 CL spots which would mean forfeiting a UEFA Cup spot to only have two. With the nation being larger than many above them at this stage, rising into the top eight after some consolidation would be achievable as seventh and eighth get 2 CL spots and a hugely significant 4 UEFA Cup spots. Breaking the top six would be a stunning achievement as that would give 3 CL spots and 3 UEFA Cup spots, however, that would require Portugal, Germany, or France slipping out the top six (or being shoved out) to make way for the NPD.

Top 30 should be a certainty, top 20 an eventuality, while a top 15 ranked league would be an excellent target and achievable after a number of years. Breaking the top eight or six may prove far more difficult but is not impossible, especially the top 8.

The difficulty in rising up the rankings will lie in the fact the Nirtanian teams will start both European competitions at the earliest stage, the 1st qualifying round, and while progressing past this stage should be easy considering the competition, the problem will lie in the second and third rounds as they could meet some of the bigger clubs in Europe, notably the 3rd and 4th placed teams from the Spanish, English or Italian leagues in the 3rd round, as well as the Champions of some pretty decent leagues that enter at this stage.

With this in mind, while attempting the challenge, I’d like to encourage you to keep track of the European co-efficient rankings and where Nirtania places on that list as it determines the number of places in European competitions that the nation achieves and will be interesting to watch it change as the clubs have success.

Historical Information

Since just after the Second World War Nirtania had been under the grip of a nationalist dictatorship that kept the country isolated from its neighbouring European countries, its people poor and repressed, and the economy subject to constant interference, nationalisation, and corruption. The country had been led by two successive strongmen, leaders of the ruling People’s Republic Party (PRP) who were the only party allowed in the nation, much like the Communist Party is in China. The much revered Royal Family had to flee Nirtania for sanctuary in England when the PRP swept to power and instituted the republic.

The people of Nirtania resented their rulers and with the succession to the second leader in doubt, his assassination led to a popular uprising against the government which resulted in the military, no friends of the ruling party, mounting a successful coup d’état. The military quickly submitted to the will of the people by asking the Royal Family to come back as rulers. The new Emperor was the grandson of the last ruling Emperor and had been born and raised in England, he ascended to the throne at the tender age of 17 in 2002 and introduced sweeping reforms to the political institutions of the nation and the economy, the command economy that had led to many shortages, famines, and widespread corruption was swept away and many government bureaucracies dissolved. The Emperor led a government that ran the country for four years during which time he presided over the transformation of the country from a closed, isolated, and ravaged nation to an open, freer, and more prosperous one.

At the age of 21 the Emperor followed the plan he laid out for the nation on ascending to the throne by handing over the responsibility for running the country to an elected Senate, which was made up of several political groupings, and which elected a Consul, normally the head of the coalition with the most seats in the Senate. The Emperor retained a veto over all legislation, which could see the issue sent to a referendum of the people if the Emperor has vetoed it and it received more than two thirds of the vote in the Senate. The Emperor had not used the veto has not since power was handed over to the Senate.

Geographical Information

The nation of Nirtania lies to the west of France, north of the Iberian Peninsula and to the southwest of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Nirtania has a population of 34,540,265 on a land mass 121,456 square miles in size.

Nirtania as a nation speaks English, is counted as part of the UK & Ireland region in FM, and is an EEC member state in a similar mould to Switzerland and Norway. The nation has a booming economy, having freed itself from dictatorship and let the people generate wealth and be free to go about their business.

The capital of Nirtania is Port Nelson with a population of around 3.5 million; the second largest city is Nodnol with a population of around 2.5 million. There are a number of other big cities in the nation with populations in excess of 250,000 people, these being Malastaire, Shangrila, Faradafry, Bozarburg, Adelphia, and Grimme.

Places in the north of the country, like Faradafry, Stravchine, Newtonia, and Midchestnut, usually experience weather similar to the English north, though some areas receive weather similar to southern Sweden. The central areas of the country, places like Bozarburg, Grimme, Valcoma, and Malastaire have weather patterns similar to southern Germany and Austria, very warm summers, and mild winters with the odd snowfall.

The south of the country where cities such as San Angel, Adelphia, Port Nelson, Lantisia, and Kasmenai are situated experience sunny Spanish like weather, with it being more Greek like in Adelphia which is sheltered from Atlantic weather being in the south east of the country.

The hottest place in Nirtania is Shangrila which due to its low altitude (below sea level), experiences very warm weather in the summer and as such, the Shasarazade stadium has a retractable roof which is more to do with keeping the sun out than with rain.

Database Information

What’s been changed?

The nation of Northern Ireland has been assumed to have voted to join the Republic of Ireland, therefore most of the top teams of Northern Ireland have been moved into Ireland. The top four Northern Ireland clubs by reputation have been placed in the Irish First Division, replacing the 4 sides in that division with the lowest reputation. The Northern Irish sides that are in the Irish First Division are Linfield, Portadown, Glentoran and Cliftonville.

60 new clubs have been created and placed in Nirtania (the new name for Northern Ireland in the database). There are 40 clubs in the three divisions that make up the League of Nirtania, with a further twenty clubs outside the league in the three regional conferences (East, Central, and West).

Names of competitions, awards, and stadia have been changed. Dozens of players have been created and placed in the newly formed clubs; the histories of the competitions have been erased barring the previous season.

The reputations of the competitions and awards have been increased dramatically as these do not change over time.

Absolutely.

You must start in the Second Division with one of the clubs mentioned but you are free to apply for other jobs and move clubs as you wish. Of course you could try taking your original club to Champions League Glory.

You are right, a lot of the players in the Premier Division and First Division are not generated but created by me. Some of the players in the Second Division were in the database but have been moved to clubs (they were free agents).

And yes, you have the correct path, in the database folder.

Well unfortunately SI don't let us edit TV Rights and Prize Money, otherwise they'd be fairly decent and increase over the years, so the money from that is minimal. The real money lies in gate receipts I'm afraid.

Makes it challenging. Once you get to Europe though, that money should help you stay clear of other teams and start to challenge.

could be a good little race there icon_wink.gif future looks bright for Nirtanian football certainly as there is lots of talent around in the first division! Could prove much tougher as you gain promotions, attempting to sign johhny lund from leeds as well as oliver hotchkiss

OH I love Potato:

Comeback of the century

Down and out at half-time they were time-wasting by the 50th minute but no up pops Anón who missed a penalty and burys a 30 yarder, then Potato after rounding the keeper. Finally it was a corner floated into the 6 yard box and Marin connects with the header to round off a lovely comeback. OH YEAH !!!!!!!!!!

p.s it was my first competative match as Angels boss

Rayleigh is near Nodnol, just North.

I did actually draw a map of Nirtania in Paint for this to place the cities and get geographical rivalries going (most of the created towns and cities also have a longitude and latitude placemark realistic to where they are in the world and Nirtania).

I'll post the map up tonight.

Wolverton Wanderers are not one of the starting teams I'm afraid Jess Boi.

Welcome to the Challenge though!

One of these six teams I will manage! (if/after getting bored of my challenge)

Purely for the fact that between them they make up New-castle!

I'll go for Old Castle Swifts. When I start I'll post a profile but I doubt it will be too soon. icon14.gif KUTGW

Isn't Newton Heath what Man Utd used to be called?

I followed this AI Experiment right from it started... and it is very tempting to play this :O I may start in the next hour... if not, then over the weekend. Hehe. Even if I am a born Port Nelson supporter. « This is the club i'll end my career at xD
