The Lost City of Atlantis - The Game Thread

The emergence of Atlantis

In 2001 tremors were noticed on the coasts surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. There were no major incidents on these shores though, and very little was felt inland, so this earthquake was just dismissed as a minor one with no consequences. Days later though, the full scale of this tectonic movement was discovered.

A boat transporting a shipment of cars along its usual shipping route through the Mediterranean was the first to notice it. And to be honest, it was hard to miss. A new island had emerged in the sea off the coast of Italy. Geologists, historians and geographers came from far afield to study this new island. Based on its location, geological structure and abandoned buildings, they all came to one conclusion; this was the lost city of Atlantis.

Atlantismap.jpg

For many years Atlantis had been assumed to have been a mythical island. It was mentioned in Plato’s famous works Timaeus and Critias. Plato wrote that it was a massive naval power which had conquered many parts of Western Europe and Africa around 9600 years BC, but after failing to conquer Athens, it sank into the sea. There had been two major hypotheses for where Atlantis may have been located, and these were the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It turns out those of the latter way of thinking were correct.

People flocked to visit Atlantis, and after four years of building work it was habitable for humans. People quickly moved to the island and the first 1000 people to move there were granted Atlantan nationality. Of course, like all good countries it needed a football association set up, and in 2005 the Atlantan FA was founded. Progress setting up a league was swift, and in 2006 the divisions and teams for the national league were revealed.

Acceptance into FIFA and UEFA

A national team was also created, with the aim being to join FIFA and start taking part in competitions in 2008, in time to mount a challenge to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.

Their chance came earlier than expected though. The Maltese FA had recently had a number of scandals and were running perilously close to bankruptcy, and in 2007 they decided they couldn’t carry on any longer. The country ceased all footballing operations, and pulled out of FIFA. This massively disrupted the Euro 2008 qualifying plans, as the group stages were only halfway completed. Atlantis were ready to go though, and when UEFA invited them to take over from Malta in Group C, they didn’t hesitate to say yes. Atlantan teams would also take the place of Maltese sides in European club competition.

Joining the Italian league

At the same time over in Italy, Grosseto had just been promoted from Serie C1/A to Serie B. The players were unhappy with the politics in the boardroom though, and by July they’d had enough of the constant managerial changes and not being paid their promotion bonuses. All the players in the team walked out. This left Serie B a team down and in a bit of a mess. There was the option of promoting a different team from Serie C1/A, but this posed problems of its own as the Italian FA didn’t think it would be fair to promote a team who hadn’t earned it. Again, Atlantis came to the rescue.

The Atlantan FA chairman called the Italian FA to arrange a meeting. At this dicussion he pointed out that the Italian leagues allowed a side from San Marino to enter their league, and he enquired about the possibility of an Atlantan side filling the gap, as it would really raise the profile of the new nation and their footballing ability. The chairman agreed in principle to this, and a couple of weeks later took the plane to Atlantis to visit the proposed side.

The best players from the country had all been invited to the capital city of Atlantopoli, and has all been offered contracts to sign for Atlantopoli International if they were accepted into the Italian league. When the Italian FA chairman arrived in Atlantopoli he was very impressed with the facilities and calibre of player, and within three days the contract had been signed to allow them into the league. 24 of the 26 players quickly signed up.

Club Information

A couple of staff members also joined to help with the running of the team. First up was the chairwoman Linda Block (CA100/PA160) Block has a good business sense and is pretty patient too, and isn’t likely to interfere with the manager’s running of the team much.

Joining her as manager is fellow Atlantan Alex Dempsey (100/160), who would take charge as the inaugural manager of Atlanto. Dempsey looks to be good tactically, and is a fan of attacking football. He’s also a good motivator.

Alex Dempsey

The side play at The Soccer Dome, which has a capacity of 17,000.

Deals were signed with other sides from the capital city of Atlantopoli to become feeder clubs, who could provide places for younger players to go out on loan to gain experience. These feeder clubs are Atlan Rovers, Atlan Pride, Atlantopoli and Little Atlan.

The Golden Twins

As was mentioned earlier, only 24 of the 26 Atlantan players approached joined Atlanto. The best two players received bigger and better offers from Serie A clubs and instead decided to join them in order to have the best possible training to try and meet their potential.

Eric Golden (130/200) was the first to sign, joining Milan, and a day later Derek Golden (130/200) signed for their city rivals Internazionale. While they’re related and living in the same city though, that’s where the similarities end. Eric is a hero, donating lots of his time to helping charities. He received top grades at school, and is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Derek however, is not a nice guy. The bully at school, after failing his exams he was lucky a club took a chance on him or it probably would have been a life of crime. They are both exceptional footballers though.

Additional information

Atlanto reputation is 4600, bank balance is around 700k, training is at 12/20, youth facilities are 15/20 with a youth academy.

Atlantis reputation is 3300. Starting joint bottom of the FIFA rankings.

This is being run using Football Manager 2008. Medium database, top 3 Italian leagues, top 2 from England, Germany, France and Spain.

Main influences on this idea are kipfizh’s Bandits (obviously, which thread here isn’t influenced by it?), brettney’s Romani nation, and DodgeeD’s STI/NTI sign-up.

Excellent backstory ~Ian~ well thought out looking forward to see how quick we can make it into Serie A. Now on to my player 4 in marking!? Ouch!! How bad is that for a CB/DM lets hope i improve that and quickly ... Oh and thanks for the mention glad i helped influence this that alone should earn me a callup to the national squad ;)

Hey Ian... any chance now that we've been loaded into the database you might spill the beans on the favorite band and how it relates??

Wouldn't that kill the suspension? everyone would know their PA's

AK85 got it right, that's why I'm going to keep it quiet until the end/retirement.

Not sure on the Atlantopoli squad page why some players ended up with youth contracts, on the various tests it changed each time which players got them so I guess it was just a recommended amount for the division or something like that.

First games should be played this evening, updates should come tomorrow afternoon.

I love the start :) Great story, ~Ian~! Few things to point out. The map is outdated as it refers to Serbia and Montenegro and at the time of FM 08 Montenegro is already an independent country. I am excited about mu hot prospect status :) I would love to buy myself in a game...never done that before. And the story of the twins, I am sure it will be very interesting. Come on Erik:)

Nice setup Ian, great stuff so far

My player looks alright but Eric Golden will definitely be in the national team ahead of him so that's a disappointment but hopefully Golden will be stuck out on the wing.

And Derek Golden looks an absolute beast already, will be interesting to see whether his attitude prevents him from becoming the best player in the world.

There were no injury worries, so a full 26 man squad was chosen for the upcoming games against Turkey and the US Virgin Islands.

The national team captain had to be picked, so Leonardo De Vinchavio was selected with Johnny Mark-Smith as his vice captain.

Atlantis v Turkey

European Championship Qualifying Group C

The team were thrown in at the deep end for their first ever international game, with Turkey being very tough opposition. But Atlantis made a good start to the match, providing most of the early pressure and creating a few chances. Rustu Recber was called into action a few times. The first clear cut chance went to Turkey though, when Derek Golden lost the ball on the right. The ball was crossed to Nihat and Brettney Joven had to make a good block to divert the ball wide.

After the good performance of the first half Atlantan fans would have been forgiven for getting their hopes up for an upset, but the dreams were quickly dashed. Wobill Luman’s free-kick from a safe position in his own half went horribly wrong, only going as far as Umit Karan. Karan raced through and slotted past Damian Waymouth to give Turkey the lead in the 46th minute. Moments later the scores were nearly levelled, but Recber made a good stop from Davidus Solo’s long range effort. The team continued battling for an equaliser, Fred Brookes and Pablo Garcia both shooting wide, and Joven letting his frustration get the better of him and earning a booking for a push, but ultimately it ended as a highly creditable 1-0 loss.

Atlantis v US Virgin Islands

Friendly

This was a battle between two teams equal in the FIFA rankings. Equal in joint last place anyway, with zero points. Despite the side’s inability to keep possession of the ball very well, it was Atlantis who got the early chances. And this time around, they took them. In the eighteenth minute Alex Barkley intercepted a pass in midfield, and played the ball to Andrew Jackson. Jackson slipped it out wide on the left to Ryan Bergman, who beat his man before sending the ball into the box. Liam Ferguson controlled it first time, and while his initial shot was blocked by the keeper, he couldn’t keep hold of it and Ferguson scored at the second time of asking. Just over ten minutes later he doubled his tally, as Barkley sent in an inswinging cross from the right, and Ferguson rose highest to nod home at the near post.

There would be no more goals though, and the second half was a very poor showing as the side failed to create anything. The US Virgin Islands were the team who were actually more likely to score, getting awarded a penalty when their striker burst into the area only to be tripped by Alex King, who was booked for his troubles. Luckily for him, the striker skied his shot well over the bar.

Great stuff Ian, good to see that Fred has made his debut at least :)

One thing I would ask is could you list the line up just above the match report, just for ease of reference?

Go Atlantis :D

Yey, I'm captain of the national team just as I was hoping for

Obviously the captain has to play every single game? hehe ;)

Good work Ian and good work the players as well! Losing only 1-0 to Turkey is quite impressive...

The line-up that won the second game should undoubtably be our first XI going forward...

I couldn't agree more with you mate. Thumbs up.

P.S. Why when I choose an emoticon it goes in the title of the message instead in the post itself :( Can someone explain me?

Gervase Smith had a chest injury and so missed the October international call-ups.

Saturday 13th October

Hungary v Atlantis

European Championships Qualifying Group C

There were no positives to be gained from this match. Whichever way you look at it, it was an awful performance. For the second game in a row, a penalty was given away by the defence, this time a dreadfully late lunge by James Ralph. This time though, Atlantis was punished as Kenesei picked himself up to smash the ball in from 12 yards. He added a second before the break.

It was three soon after half-time, neither Johnny Mark-Smith or Curtis Powell doing themselves any favours as they were both caught horribly out of position to let Torghelle slip through to score the third. Mark-Smith tried making amends for his error by scoring a nice free-kick with 25 minutes left, but it wasn’t enough and there was still time remaining for Halmosi to get Hungary’s fourth. Mark-Smith was lucky it wasn’t five, as Joel Josy had to make a smart stop at Halmosi’s feet after a suicidal backpass from him.

Atlantis v Moldova

European Championships Qualifying Group C

Any disappointment following the previous match was quickly forgotten about after just ten minutes of this game. Atlantis took the lead after just five minutes, Alex King playing a nice one-two with Carlos Ferrari on the edge of the area, and when he got the ball back he drilled it in low to the right. And after ten minutes the lead was doubled. Davidus Solo received the ball in the middle of the pitch and spread it out wide to Pablo Garcia on the left. Spotting Eric Golden in space he passed to the Milan forward, who turned his marker and curled a brilliant shot past the keeper into the far corner.

A third goal was bagged in the second half, though it wasn’t the same quality as the other two. Wobill Luman’s cross was met in the air by Ferrari, whose header deflected off his marker and looped up over the keeper before nestling in the net. It was a total fluke, but he won’t care how his first international goal went in. Bacila got a late consolation goal, but this was an easy win for Atlantis.
