Beat Burnley and Spurs on the way, then 2 late goals gave us a 2-1 win over City. Memorable to say the least! Main signings for season 2 were Sessengon, Mitrovic and Loftus Cheek. Sitting pretty in the league around 5th for a while, but three consecutive away games, City, Liverpool and Southampton have seen us lose 3 times and we've slid to 9th. Also the Europa League has been a burden, we qualified 2nd in the group but the squad is too light to deal with that competition whilst trying to remain competitive for the European slots in the league. Just in Jan now but with little funds can't see me improving what I have now until the summer. League Fixtures 1 & 2 - We lost only one game in our fourteen league games in charge as I reorganised the team and new signings proved fruitful. F.A. Cup - An excellent cup run was ended at the semi final stage by Manchester United at a packed Wembley. I was proud that we took them to extra time before succumbing. Carabao Cup - We were already eliminated when I arrived at the club. Pre Season Friendlies - As the season started very early, due to the mid season World Cup, they only played two games, losing both. Mid Season Friendlies - Due to the Qatar World Cup in the middle of the season, the club played three friendlies in December, winning two and drawing the other. Squad - A much stronger squad than when I joined. Squad Dynamics - They all gel well together. Transfers In - I signed eight new players to strengthen the squad and most have come good. Many of them from the first game they played. Jonatan Dubau is going to be a superstar. Transfers Out 1 & 2 - I allowed twelve players to leave permanently and three more go out on loan as I tried to rid the club of the deadwood. Finances - Very healthy indeed. The club is in great shape. League Fixtures 1 & 2 - Some poor form before I arrived, this turned around as a come from behind win over Manchester City kick started the campaign and saw the club safe from relegation. F.A. Cup - Eliminated at the first time of asking, away to Burnley, saw no cup run this year. Carabao Cup - Played before my time, the club lifted their first major trophy since 1969 as they beat Stoke City on penalties in the final. Pre Season Friendlies - Just the five games were played, due to a very early start to the season because of the winter World Cup and the club won all five. Strange that the last game was after two league games. Mid Season Friendlies - Four matches were scheduled in December, including a testimonial for Newcastle academy graduate and Preston stalwart Paul Huntington. Two wins and two draws saw the club remain unbeaten. Squad - A good squad overall, though a clear out is required and quite a few new players are required, especially up front. Squad Dynamics - Not too bad, though obvious room for improvement. Transfers In - All transfers occurred before my time. Transfers Out - All transfers occurred before my time. Finances - Although we are still in the red, it has improved somewhat. We also have the commercial monies, together with the proceeds from the season ticket sales to come. Next Season A good Europa League run and a top ten finish are the goals. Key Players Denis Drăguş - A good season from the Romanian international striker, scoring 18 goals in his 38 games. Marc Bartra - The Spanish centre back played better than his peers and is a rock at the back for me. Jamaal Lascelles - Now aged 29, the club captain is a full England international. Despite this, he was in the shadow of Bartra for most of the season. Bernard - The Brazilian attacking midfielder plays in a position I do not use, so he may become surplus to requirements. Martin Dubravka - The Slovakian international goalkeeper is now 34 years old and is becoming injury prone. I think it is time to replace him. DazRTaylor Posted December 21, 2018 Author Share Posted December 21, 2018 Mid Season Review Season 2023/24 Newcastle United Europa League A perfect group stage saw the club qualify for the first knockout round, where we play French side Angers, with ease. A 6-1 away win to Swiss giants Basel was the obvious highlight. Premier League A decent, if unspectacular first half of the season. Some really annoying losses though. The Champions League places are beyond me, so a top six finish is the goal. F.A. Cup We have been drawn at home to Championship side Reading in the third round. Carabao Cup Oh dear. It wasn't on the agenda to go out at the first time of asking, the third round. Add to this that we lost to bitter rivals Sunderland and I am not happy! Squad Dynamics - Overall, it is going well and the players have gelled nicely. Transfers In - Quite a few new arrivals, as I needed to replace a lot of players. DazRTaylor Posted December 21, 2018 Author Share Posted December 21, 2018 End of Season Review Season 2023/24 Newcastle United Europa League - A terrific cup run that was eventually ended by Portuguese giants Porto at the semi final stage. We were hammered by Porto, to be fair. A good come back against Angers was the highlight. We breezed through our group, with a 100% record. League - An excellent campaign as we qualified for the Europa League through the league. Just two points separated the top four in a very exciting finish to the season. League Fixtures 1 & 2 - As the results show, we really struggle against the other top eight sides, with not many points being won against them. F.A. Cup - A poor performance away to second tier Sheffield Wednesday saw the club crash out in the fourth round. Carabao Cup - A disastrous elimination in the third round away to rivals Sunderland did not go down well with the fans. Pre Season Friendlies - Thirteen games and we remained unbeaten. Squad - A superb, young and very hungry squad. If they continue to grow, there is no reason why we cannot challenge for the title within a few seasons. Youth Candidates - A dreadful intake this year, with only Jonny Coulson YP24A19 showing any promise and even he isn't great. Squad Dynamics - It all appears to be going well. Transfers In - I spent over £170m, as sixteen players signed for transfer fees, as well as a few free transfers and loans. Transfers Out 1 & 2 - Despite spending so much money, I still made a profit, as players sales of over £200m were completed, as I completely overhauled the squad. Twenty two players were sold for transfer fees. Finances - Due to the huge amount of money brought in through players sales, the balance is healthy. Next Season A push for a Champions League place. Key Players Antonin Prucha - Costing £14m from Viktoria Plzeň in his homeland, the Czech Republic international centre back could develop into one of the best defenders in the world. He is already listed at the club's key player. Alban Lafont - Signed for a bargain £10m from Italian side Fiorentina, the French international goalkeeper is an automatic number one. Denis Drăguş - Another top notch season from the Romanian international forward, scoring 27 goals in his 46 appearances. Nick Print - Signed from fellow north east side Middlesbrough during pre season for £15m, the teenage midfielder performed so well, he is now a full England international. Rubén Mendoza - Another midfielder, the Argentinian arrived from Racing Club for £10.25m and is already one of the first names on the team sheet. DazRTaylor Posted December 23, 2018 Author Share Posted December 23, 2018 Mid Season Review Season 2024/25 Newcastle United Europa League Another unbeaten group stage and another group win has seen the club qualify for the knockout rounds, where we have been drawn to play Italian giants Lazio, with the first leg in Rome. Premier League An appalling December, where we lost three league games, saw us drop from second to fifth. Otherwise, it has been a fine season. F.A. Cup We have been drawn away to League One side Mansfield Town in the third round. Carabao Cup We made it through to the quarter final before losing an entertaining game away to Manchester City, by four goals to three. Squad Dynamics - The core of the squad has remained the same as last year, so this is going very well. Transfers In - I again spent over £100m as I brought in a lot of youth. I raided my old club Aston Villa for three of their best players. Transfers Out - Not so many departures this summer, though I did allow a few back up players to go out on loan. DazRTaylor Posted December 24, 2018 Author Share Posted December 24, 2018 End of Season Review Season 2024/25 Newcastle United Europa League - A heartbreaking exit, at the quarter final stage, to German side Hertha Berlin, on away goals. It was pleasing to get a measure of revenge on Porto though. We won our group, remaining unbeaten. League - With Tottenham imploding on their run in, we snatched fourth place and a qualifying spot in the Champions League. Third going into the final fixtures, Manchester United snatched the title on the final day, by beating Liverpool. League Fixtures 1 & 2 - A poor December nearly proved crucial in finishing in a Champions League spot and it was only Tottenham self destructing in the run in that proved otherwise. F.A. Cup - A cracking cup run, all the way to the final, before losing to Manchester United after extra time, who won six trophies during the season, including the big three of the Champions League, Premier League & F.A. Cup. Carabao Cup - We were eliminated by Manchester City in the quarter finals. Pre Season Friendlies - A good preseason, losing only twice. Squad - The squad continues to go from strength to strength. I do feel we are one or two "big" players short though. Youth Candidates - Another very poor intake that is even worse than last year's. No players have been tagged, such is the lack of quality. Squad Dynamics - Everyone seems to get on well together. They even like me for some reason. Transfers In - I spent money and brought in quite a lot of new players. Just under £140m was spent in total. Transfers Out 1 & 2 - Quite a lot of players left, though there were not any truly "huge" sales, so to speak. Finances - We are back in the black, thanks to the league money coming in. Next Season A top two and perhaps a title push are the goals for next season. Key Players Antonin Prucha - The central defender continues to go from strength to strength. Nick Print - Now an international regular, the young midfielder is one of my best ever signings. Rúben Vinagre - Whilst not the most talented player at the club, the wing back has been sensational for two seasons now. Costing just £950,000 from Wolves when I first joined the club, he has proved to be an absolute steal. Éderson - The gifted striker scored 21 goals in his 40 games. Has been fined twice for late night frolics. Rubén Mendoza - The central midfielder is very talented and has had Real Madrid sniffing around him.
