From Porsgrunn to Tottenham - an adventure around Europe

europe_map.jpg

After lurking in FMCU for a while, and deciding that I can't be arsed with any one-club challenges this time around, I've started a journeyman career for FM 2013.

Leagues loaded are here. A couple of edits - obviously removing certain limitations (ahem) plus a small edit to fix a tax problem and some media and real names files.

I've started out as a 31 year old English manager, unemployed, with a sunday league rep, and am holidaying a month before applying for jobs.

Aims

  • I'd like to manage my team, Tottenham at some stage
  • Manage in some leagues I haven't before, such as France, Portugal, Turkey
  • Try and win some kind of international trophy at some point.

Wish me luck!

Pors Grenland, from the town of Porsgrunn, are currently playing in the Norwegian 2nd division, Group 3. The finances look fairly decent.

The squad was as poor as expected, so I saught out various reinforcements.

We began in 8th position, and the board expected a "respectable" league position, whatever that means!

Season 2012

End of Season Review

Pors Grenland

Norwegian 2nd Division

pors.png

League: 4th

An improvement on the 8th position when I joined, but given our large wage budget for the division, I expected better. Far too many draws however.

Cup: 2nd round (out before I joined)

Key players:

Eivind Saether - strong centre back helped keep our goals conceded down as much as possible, given everyone else sucked.

Anders Hatlen - versatile midfielder contributed well in the middle of the park

Stian Berget - veteran winger was a wonder on the right

Aksel Duus - our other central midfielder slotted in alongside Hatlen or on the left

Kenneth Kvalheim - target man lead the line up front

Objective for next season - to overhaul the squad and have a better stab at promotion.

Season 2013

Pre Season Review

Pors Grenland

Norwegian 2nd Division

pors.png

So I was offered a new contract - same money but an extra year. However our wage budget was cut back so I had to give an expectation of winning the league. Given our finances, that's fairly important!

I overhauled the squad somewhat:

Pors_TransfersHistory-2.png

Of which my star signing was in goal: Knut Dorum Lillebakk, formerly of Molde, is too good for this level but has retired from professional football, hence why I could snap him up.

Season 2013

Mid-Season Review

Pors Grenland

Norwegian 2nd Division

pors.png

League: 2nd

Going well but we drew the last 3 fixtures which hasn't helped matters.

Cup: 3rd round

A good run that made us a bit of money, although ultimately ended by Viking.

Squad: generally performing well. Stand out performers are:

Knut Dorum Lillebakk - goalkeeper whom is way too good for this level. I extended his contract by a year fairly early on.

Ulf Riis - absolute rock at the back and getting interest from Stabaek.

Tor Omar Sande - helping out from left back

Krenar Badivuku - top scorer with 5 goals (yeah, not great!) despite not playing that much.

Chuma Anene - loanee whom is our second top scorer

Finances: still having trouble despite the cup run.

Bar the recent run of draws I'm confident we can get there. Or I'm sacked.....!

Season 2013

End of Season Review

Pors Grenland

Norwegian 2nd Division

pors.png

League: 1st

A dramatic improvement in form meant we won the league with a game to spare.

Cup: 3rd round

Key players:

Knut Drum Lillebakk - continued to marshall the back four.

Ulf Riis - strong as ever at the back

Kjell Andre Thu - midseason signing slotted in along with Riis

Jonas Fundingsrud - lost my original loanee right back to a serious injury just after the summer break, but this guy did fine

Krenar Badivuku - played much better after the break, ending up top scorer.

I signed a new two year deal for an extra £50 per week.

Our finances aren't going to be helped by this!

Season 2014

Pre Season Review

Pors Grenland

Adeccoligaen

pors.png

I tore the squad apart:

Pors_TransfersHistory.png

Of which the star signings were:

Karanveer Grawal - attacking right back on loan from Stromsgodset

Fabian Andersen - right winger on loan from Sandefjord

Jonny Hansen - veteran central midfielder on a free, also from Sandefjord

We had an ok-ish run of fixtures - generally losing to Tippaligaen sides but holding our own otherwise:

PorsGrenland_Friendlies.png

First fixture is away at Kongsvinger.

Haven't played that much this weekend - however first 3 fixtures were a creditable 1-1 draw at Kongsvinger, a 3-2 home loss to Brann, and a 4-0 humping away at Bodo/Glimt. This is going to be a long season.

And we're still half a million in the red....

Season 2014

Mid-Season Review

Pors Grenland

Norwegian 1st Division

pors.png

League: 6th

A very creditable performance so far sees us in the last playoff position - a few slip ups but a good few wins.

Cup: 1st round

Terrible loss in the first round against 2nd Division Lorenskog.

Squad: some strugglers from last season's squad (Lillebakk, unfortunately). Current performers so far:

Ulf Riis - solid as ever

Kjell Andre Thu - as strong as Riis at the back

Kristoffer Haraldseid - young loanee keeping various elder players out of the squad

Fitim Azemi - our top scorer

Krenar Badivuku - not as many goals yet, but has helped with a few assist for Azemi.

Finances: still dreadful

I think i'll keep the team in mid-table, but despite having another year left on my contract I'm already considering leaving at the end of the season. The financial position is crippling, unfortunately.

Well this was interesting - I wasn't even linked to it in the press:

Crispypaul_NewsInbox.png

I turned it down though as Portsmouth were languishing in 19th, so I thought it'd be too much to win the league this season. I will resign at the end of the season now I think.

The Last Game

So it looks like its gone down to the wire: we're currently sitting in second place by the last game of the season:

LastGameLeague.png

Fixtures are thus. Both us and Bodo/Glimt are at home against weak opposition so we have to make sure we at least match their result:

Here goes!

Season 2014

End of Season Review

Pors Grenland

Norwegian 1st Division

pors.png

League: 2nd (promoted)

Well what to say about this? We were lucky, quite frankly. The team couldn't even score in the last 2 games, at home, against poor opposition. However Bodo/Glimt also failed to win at home in the last game so we ended up clinching automatic promotion on goal difference.

Cup: 1st round

Key players:

Ulf Riis - brilliant again

Kjell Andre Thu - ditto

Krenar Badivuku - improved after the break to be the 2nd top scorer and lead assister, usually for.....

Fitim Azemi - our top scorer

Jonny Hansen - veteran central midfielder bossed the middle of the park

Finances - a little better thanks to substantial prize money, tempered by this required facilities improvement.

Board Summary - obviously pleased. I'm currently down as "untouchable". :D

Future

I'm waiting to see what budget we get - if it's no better than the £5k a week we currently have, we're going to seriously struggle in the Premier division. We also really need to turn professional.

Congrats on promotion. Hope you can turn pro, surprised you haven't already, have you asked the board?

Cheers

I'm waiting for the season to update first.

EDIT: its greyed out in board requests with "we can't afford to turn professional". Not good.

Maybe with TV money, or better sponsorship etc you can turn pro.

Unfortunately its updated now we're in the Tippaligaen, but we remain semi-pro along with Bryne.

However our initial budgets are somewhat better:

So I think i'll stick it out for a bit now.

Season 2015

Pre Season Review

Pors Grenland

Norwegian Premier Division (Tippeligaen)

pors.png

We began the season with the usual changing of the guard:

Pors_TransfersHistory.png

No-one amazing, really.

The few friendlies we had were decent enough, bar the first loss to Staebaek.

PorsGrenland_FixturesSchedule.png

Finances are considerably better at this stage, thanks to substantial season ticket sales and some new sponsorship deals. Unfortunately we still can't turn professional.

Pors_BoardroomFinances.png

First fixture is away at Fredrikstad.

Still not an awful lot to strenghen on.

Not really - I actually have quite a bit of room in the wage budget still, however can't get anyone that good to join. The difference is obvious between us and the other semi-pro side, compared with the rest of the division:

Tippeligaen_StatsTeam.png

Sorry been a bit quiet - busy at work - but after ten games I decided to resign from Pors Grenland as it just wasn't working out in the Premier Division. Not turning professional means I couldn't get the players to match the largely professional rest of the division.

Final standings when I resigned, were as such. We were also knocked out of the cup in the 3rd round.

I therefore went looking for a job. I had a few offers - including an interesting one from Aberdeen - but in the end I went for.......

Helmond_Sport.png

Helmond Sport

Jupiler League

So I accepted this:

Acceptedjoboffer.png

Founded in 1967, Helmond Sport are a professional Dutch club currently playing in the Jupiler League. The club play their home games at Lavans Stadion and possess adequate training facilities and basic youth facilities. The club also has average junior coaching and a fairly basic youth recruitment network.

Although Helmond Sport are enduring a thirty-three year barren spell, having not won a competition since 1982, the club still have a history of which they can be justly proud. Helmond Sport finished runners-up in the KNVB Beker in 1935, 1949 and 1985, and won the Dutch 2nd tier for the only time in 1982 and finished runners-up once.

There's a fairly decent squad, the finances are pretty decent, and they're professional. I think I can improve on last season's finish of 12th.

Pre Season Review

Helmond Sport

Dutch First Division (Jupiler League)

Helmond_Sport.png

As is normally the case in this career, I carried out a major revision of the squad. Its nice having some money!

HelmondSport_TransfersHistory.png

Key players of whom are:

Jeffrey Altheer - bought as a midfielder but I think i'll end up playing him as a centre back, as I've had problems reinforcing that position.

Niki Maenpaa - Finnish international keeper brought in on a free

Pavel Kederabek - 30k signing from Sparta Prague, should hopefully do a job on the right wing.

Semedo - solid ball winner for midfield.

Finances aren't too bad:

HelmondSport_BoardroomFinances-1.png

Although our friendlies could have perhaps gone a bit better:

HelmondSport_FixturesSchedule.png

First fixture is a home tie with Telstar.

One club challenges can always change into a journeyman game, and vice versa.

Indeed - I made a mistake in my journeyman game in FM12 in quitting FC Nordsjaeland far too early, and I ended up going back to my dafuge challenge game until FM13 was released.

4 games in and we're W1 D1 L2. A bit meh at the moment, especially as both losses were in games we've dominated. I've changed from a 4-4-2 to a 4-2-3-1 to see if that will help.

Link to post

...it didn't. A 4-0 loss away at Sparta which we were predicted to win comfortably :(

I really don't know what's going on at the moment.

Sorted

A reversion after the Sparta game to the rigid defensive 4-4-2 I had at Pors has made a dramatic change.

Mid Season Review

Helmond Sport

Dutch First Division (Jupiler League)

Helmond_Sport.png

Juplier League: 3rd

After a pretty poor start, we improved substantially. Have also qualified for the playoffs by winning stage 2.

Dutch Cup: 3rd round

Straightforward win against non-league side before an epic game away to AZ Alkmaar who ultimately triumphed.

Key players:

Bogdan Muller - top scorer. Gells well with....

Jelle van Kruijssen - top league scorer with 10 goals so far

Quin Kruijsen - left winger I switched to left back due to a weakness there.

Pavel Kaderabek - Czech right winger working well on the flank

Dutch First Division (Jupiler League)

Helmond_Sport.png

Juplier League: 1st

Well, we did it, winning the league on the last game of the season. Despite a couple of hiccups, the 5-3 loss to NAC Breda in particular. Our substantial wage bill played a part, admittedly.

Dutch Cup: 3rd round

Key players:

Bogdan Muller - joint top scorer

Jelle van Kruijssen - top league scorer and joint top scorer with 18 goals

Quin Kruijsen - continued his form throughout as an attacking left back

Momar Bangoura - young French midfielder (just called up by Guinea) signed on a free after being released by Marseille, kept Semedo out of the team.

Pavel Kaderabek - led the assists charts for the team

I was named Manager of the Year.

Finances - unfortunately these have deteriorated due to £1m bonuses being paid to the staff. Hopefully it'll sort itself out in the top division.

Youth Intake - pretty dreadful.
