    To be fair, in International Football, I'd probably say it's the best way. Early goal, then just control the tempo of the game from there. No need to up the levels at all when the games are thick and fast and the latter stages will be more draining.

    Wales didn’t even engage first half Of course we looked good, stones/Maguire knocking it between themselves loads. Our chances came from us losing the ball in the Wales third, then Wales stringing a pass or two before our counter press won the ball and there was a gap. We did nothing to trouble them and against better opposition like we saw with USA, they press and control the ball as they know the danger isn’t there. The changes at HT and likely rocket from Southgate worked, but 50% of this group game time has been a concern in terms of same things we’ve seen over the years.

    It was a dreadful first half, but at least Gareth was proactive for once and moved Foden away from RW so he could be more influential. Will say that 50% of the group game time we have looked clueless with the ball, only caveat we haven’t conceded in that. Still gives me vibes of a winnable big game, us not advantage in 1st half and it’s back to being reactive in 2nd half. Should beat Senegal, then the QF is an almighty game for Southgate legacy.

    Seen some of their games under Page in Nations League and the qualifers for this, they are a very dull side with no identity. Just park the bus, wait for a moment of magic. Easy to forget they’re fortunate to be here, as Ukraine were the better team till that Bale free kick. They’ve got a good euros group to finish 2nd in, but need to improve things otherwise could lose twice to Turkey and that’s that.

    Moving it around the back, good. Counter press when possession lost, good. Outside that it’s USA stuff. Slow, cautious, not finding the runs when they are made. Wales will feel very comfortable with this as an opening 30, only troubled once and that’s from losing possession in a bad area.
