Thats fine, everything including Pirlo is always welcome here. I would have loved if United hired me (as a fan of the club) but they went with the "nobody" Max Allegri and turned me down. If i go back to Pirlo he started out as an attacking midfielder, call it trequartista if you like. IMO he was in the central midfield for most of his Milan days (DLP most likely). It was as he grow older and hes legs had left him he started to play deepest (as a regista in Juventus). So started out closest to the op. goal, then dropped and dropped again as he grew older.

I think the regista can work in 4-1-2-3 but its hard to pull it off. Has to be correct PPMs and roles+duties for the rest of the midfield trio too, I would start playing around with Regista, CMs and CMa.

The most suited for the regista IMHO is a 4-2-3-1 with DMs. Putting a ballwinner or a pure holder besides him.

Yeah i initially thought that, but read that a 4-2-3-1 is notoriously hard to balance, plus then its not Milan from back in the 03 ish season. but i guess you could make it play like a 4-3-3, fairly easy, I presumed regista would be best for him as it seems to have alot more freedom to move around the pitch and less defensive responsibility than a dlp. Why defend when you Gattuso next to you. :)

The way I start a match depends on how I want to dominate and beat the opponent. I look at their formation and using the scout report I have an idea about their roles etc. Then I determine which roles to use in midfield. Only the roles in my midfield change though. I always use SK-S, 2 CWBs, 2 BPDs and 2 IFs. Very rarely I may change the Treq to a False 9 (vs formations that don't have DM or 2 DMs)

Basically you have to make a judgement where the space is for your players to take advantage of. Generally the idea is to have more support roles and individual mentalities that are as close together as possible so the system is fluid.

I don't have a go-to midfield combo. I'm facing different formations so I adjust the midfield roles based on that.

I have 3 tactics loaded with slight variations so my players are familiar as much as possible.

    Tactic 1 has DM-D, AP-S and MEZ-S

Tactic 2 has HB-D, AP-S and CM-A (this is the most aggressive one)

    Tactic 3 has HB-D, DLP-S and AP-A

But I also use slight variation of each like:

    HB-D, DLP-S, MEZ-S

    DM-D, DLP-S, CM-S

DM-D, DLP-S, AP-S ( this is the most conservative one)

It all depends what you are looking for your players to do and how you want them to contribute to the overall play. Of course it also depends on player attributes and PPMs.

What do you want your team to play and what do you want from your midfield?

This is a really interesting post Yonko, if you don't mind could you give me a couple of examples of when you'd use a couple of them? One thing that always eludes meis how subtle changes in roles, eg HB to DM effect the game and the player. From my limited knowledge, I assuming that when you say most conservative, your giving up attacking intent for more possession? and vice versa with the CM-A?

  3. OK, this might be taking it a little away from what you intended, But I was using a pretty similar set-up with Man Utd (dont judge me :p) trying to emulate Pirlo, GAttuso et al. I used a Regista for Pirlo, then because of his support duty I really struggled to get my midfield balanced well enough. Against inferior teams I had Mezz(a) carr and the Reg and it worked, although the carr and reg had a tendency to occupy the same areas at times. But against equal teams away or the big teams I was left wide open. I tried a CM(d) and a bwm(d) but they seemed to get in the registas way. Has anyone managed to get, or have any idea how to balance a mid with a Reg in it?

Also on one of he forums, someone said they see Pirlo as a dlps in cm slot, which got me thinking, but he is a typical Reg.......isnt he?

I also have an unhealthy obsession with getting a poacher to work as well. But highly doubt it would work in his system, would it?

  4. @Experienced Defender I use the overlap instruction to get my WB further forward if required, with my tactic being so attacking in nature i was worried about the counter attack and getting "done" on the break hence the fairly conservative roles for my fullbacks. I have noticed however, that both fulbacks kind of "dither" as in they get to a point and cant decide whether to overlap or not, theres acres of space but they reluctant to get into it, i'm guessing due to there duty and being aware of having to cover back? SO again reluctant to push them any further forward in case they cant get back. If i had my regista as a more disciplined role then yes id defo change it :)

I also started off with IWB, but found they basically took away the ball from my regista. when I analysed the passes etc, my IWBs took more than half my passes of my regista which I thought made it pointless having him in there, and thats the whole point of the tactic to try and get my regista to be the focal point of my play, aka Pirlo=esque :)

  5. Yes please feel free @Experienced Defender I'm always keen to hear other peoples opinions of tactics, as although I kind of know what im doing, half is blind luck or just playing around and getting the right combination without really knowing why.

I get a feeling I know what you're going to say, but lets see if I'm right :)

Oh some of the TI's arent always on, run at defence and overlap left and right are generally off for the start of a match.

  6. Thanks again, for the input.

I played a couple games last night with a False 9 and he was better, scored and got an assist, better rating to, so maybe thats the answer? I was considering poacher or pressing forward but im not convinced the will be effective, especially the poacher as i have no space in behind, hence AF isnt being considered. One thing I did notice was my when played as a DLF my players in that position go caught offside ALOT, again could be tactics related rather than role but just an observation I made. @Experienced Defender my tactics are third or forth post in, if you could cast your eye over and let me know what you think? I'd be really grateful, as i said im happy with most of it just not the strikers contributions.

Also played Martial as my winger, lethal out there imo. Far better than as a striker.

  7. Ok, so I've been reading up some more and decided I need to make a choice and either have my attacker dropping off and creating space OR pushing the line, seeing as I'm playing already with a High line and heavy pressing I feel having a player dropping off may benefit me more? So just got a couple of questions regarding this. @Experienced Defender I'd love your take on this if possible.

    1) How does the movement of an F9 differ to a DLF?

    2) I'm hoping my mezzala will help fill the space the F9 is leaving (along with the wide players) rather than cramping the area as seemed to happen with my DLF?

    3) Will be wide players be suitable still with there support duties? I don't want to start messing with a formula thats working just for one role, one has the PI gets into box, the other one will start working on it when he finishes his current PI training.

One last question not related to the formation, if I start training a young player ie Greenwood for he role of F9, for example, I presume his stats will increase more quickly in the highlighted ones? so I could pick up any weaknesses nice and early and iron them out?

  8. Also what do you all think Berbatov would be in FM20?

I've been playing a bit today, My main issue that I seem to be having is that he (the striker) doesn't seem to be in the 6 yard box all that much, to finish chances or occupy defenders. He, in todays case Ighalo, spends alot more time off to one side of the penalty area, now this isn't to bad as my winger normally fills the gap, in fact martial scored from a similar scenario, however would it not make sense for the striker to be in there too?

As a DLF(a) i feel he still gets a little too deep in build up play? I want him to occupy defenders, whilst still be an option for a pass, not drop right off the defenders. I'm happ with build up play between my reg/FB/Winger and mezzala and i feel if my DLF comes and gets involved to he kind of gets in the way, if that makes sense? It pushes my mezz over and congests play. Whereas if he didnt get involved and just provided an option with his back to goal for an out ball or over the top for a through ball, then my more creative midfielders might have a little more room?

I'm not sure if that makes much sense, or if there is a role that can what i'm after, but i hope it helps to find a solution  :) got a week left in Jan  to buy if needs be, the more i play the more i feel Martial isn't the striker i want but a good rotation option with rashford to keep them both fresh.

  9. @EnigMattic1 My mezz is on the left to accommodate pogba/fernandes thats all :)

I'm by no means an expert or even comfortable wit some of the roles and duties. The one thing I have noticed is that if I leave my AMR/AML on attacking duties they dont track anywhere near enough for my liking, there is a noticeable gap between where my attacking mid stops tracking and my FB starts closing down, hence there both on support, still get forward enough to be my main goal threats.

At least thats how it looks to me anyway lol

  10. Thanks for all the input so far,

The player list was pretty much what i expected and imagined it to be.

As for tactic, below should be my setup. Its based loosely of one of @Rashidi tactics, mainly the very attacking mentality and slower tempo. I was having issues getting an IW/IF to work the way i wanted and then I read somewhere about wingers being slightly more effective and acting like IW if they have cuts inside Player trait.

Ive also included Martials profile, his stats flatter him slightly as Ive been rotating him with rashford on the left wing, so the majority of his goals have come from there. Im thinking he will be alot more effective out there?

    Thanks again for any help

  11. Hi All,

Ok I wasn't sure where to put this, but this forum seemed the most appropriate, apologies if its in the wrong section.

Now, I'm making a 4-1-2-2-1 (4-3-3) using a Regista (This is through choice I want to create a Pirlo-esque style gameplay). After some trial and alot of error I'm almost there, with a large part of the credit going to Rashidi and his youtube channel, thanks. I have one (maybe 2) roles to nail down.

    1) My midfield 3 is Regista/Mezz (a)/Carr at the moment and Im happy with the mezz and Reg, I found i didnt have much going forward without the mezz, no movement if i used to ballwinners. In general i am happy with my Carrilero, but I was wondring if a BWM(s) would be more effective? From my understanding he would be better at tracking/covering/winning the ball back but maybe not as good going forwards? Ive read the descriptions of both (and the cm(d)) and they all seem extremely close in how they operate, with a Carrilero sitting wider being the only noticeable entry really. Will the Carr still cover over on the mezzala's half of the pitch or is that an area where a bwm would cover better as its not the carrilero's "half"? I considered a cm(D) but decided it would be too negative and kind of sits back to much for me.

    2) The role of my forward is........ fluid at the moment, I cant decide or figure out which role is best for a lone striker as they have to do so much themselves. SO far I have tried F9/treq/AF and DLF(A), now my player isn't the great at any of these (though he is a great player) apart from AF, but i found he was isolated alot, which I expected, also gets caught offside alot in that role, more than I would expect for a player of his quality. He just seems to not contribute much at all, few goals, few assists, pretty average ratings. So I'm in a dilemma, what I want him to do is pull defenders to him and drop a little deeper to give my wide players room to exploit, its kind of working, my top goal scorers are my wide players but I'm not sure my strikers contributions have much to do with it, my reg and mezz are getting all the assists/key passes etc.  I guess i'm just stumped with the forward roles, I understand there fundamentals I think, not so much a DLF but the F9, treq and AF i have a rough vision of what they do, I guess what I want is a player who drops off the defenders to create space, whilst having the ability/vision to be able to play players in/see the pass and also be able to finish/know when to get in the box. But all the roles kind of do that, so I just don't know, its now January So ihave the budget to get all out on a striker to buy what my team needs, so I need to nail the role i want and find said player.

If people want to give examples of players in the striker roles from RL id appreciate it.

I have to admit I was going to try and make a 2 striker tactic with a reg but my 4-3-3 is working well enough I don't want to change too much. Plus I like my width and balance and id lose alot of width to give another striking option. Plus then Id have two striker roles to worry about lol

Thanks for reading, I have a tendancy to waffle.

  12. @Rashidi Ive been watching a few of your videos on youtube. Learnt alot so thank you. Im still struggling for consistency with a Regista tactic though. I have a 4-1-2-2-1 (4-3-3) formation at the moment playing an aggressive high block with a positive/attacking mentality.

I'm not scoring much though. My regista (Pogba/tonali) is playing well and my two other midfielders are doing there part protecting him with carr/bwm(S) roles, my striker just isnt scoring or creating, to be honest he isnt doing much at all. I have tried an F9 and dlf on both duties to no avail, hes jus very passive in games.

I've tried using a narrower attack to bring my IF/IW closer to him. He scored 1 goal against inferior opponents and other than 2 penalties thats it in 15 games, no assists no key passes, nothing. Im just not seeing where my issue is, I wouldn't be bothered if he was creating or providing goals for my wide attackers but he isnt. Any advice?

Also can I ask your thoughs on the Raumdeuter, the role intrigues me and I admit I have tried it i my system, with the idea that my Reg sees him hanging out in space and pings balls to him, but it hasnt really worked out like that. But i think thats maybe because im pushed so high up the pitch anyway theres no space to "investigate".

Your box formation looks good fun though, if only i had more wbs lmao.
