Stuniverse
5 hours ago, Tajerio said: I tried to make heads or tails of it and couldn't. You ought to be able to sign three with no restrictions, since you only have one non-EU player. But your DoF is talking as if you signed Shelvey this season. You're definitely OK to make two signings, but beyond that I really don't know. Thanks, @Tajerio. Well it's unlikely to be Karamoko Dembele or Stevie Mallan as we've already scouted both Celtic players and they have no interest in joining Sampdoria. Celtic defender Chancel Mbemba is keen to join us, but as he'll count as a nonEU player I'm not rushing into making an offer for him. 5 hours ago, Tajerio said: On a different note entirely, I see why that squad finished 14th in Serie A last year. Not great with the mental stats, not a ton of pace, and not terribly creative either. I think Riedewald is actually a pretty shrewd signing by your predecessor, because he can at least pass and defend (in FM anyway). You've certainly got work to do. Yes, I'm beginning to think Sampdoria may be my biggest challenge so far on this save. Be careful what you wish for, and all that. Based on reports from my coaches, all of my main players (approximately two per position) are around the same level, between 2.5 and 3.5 stars, but mostly 2.5 or 3.0 stars. My Head of Youth Development, Giovanni Invernizzi, has 19 for judging ability and 19 for judging potential so he’s my go to coach for his opinion. It looks like I have no standout players. At this stage, I have no idea what a 2.5 star player equates to in Serie A. Same for 3.0 stars and 3.5 stars. I’m very conscious that this squad finished 14th out of 20 last season so it will need improving but, at this stage, I'm not exactly sure where other than generally across the board. My recruitment team are busy scouting and I'l review those reports before deciding which players to target. I think you're spot on, lots of work to do.

Stuniverse has rewarded the loyalty of three members of his Celtic backroom staff who left Celtic Park at the same time Stuniverse did - Jari Litmanen takes over the Assistant Manager duties from Daniele Russo, who left the Stadio Luigi Ferraris over the weekend. Litmanen has previously worked with Stuniverse at Falkirk and Hibs, before moving with him to Celtic. Steve Wigley, who worked with Stuniverse at Hibs, before following him to Celtic, and Mark Hudson both join Sampdoria as first-team coaches. Francesco Baiano has left his job as Pisa Under-20 Manager to join Sampdoria as a first-team coach. Baiano, who played for Derby County between 1997 and 2000 and speaks good English, will take over the media duties until Stuniverse has learnt to speak Italian. Stuniverse
Sunday 20th July 2025 Pre-match v Celtic (a) - Pre-season Friendly (1) Match Preview The Bhoys: Thank you for your time, Stuniverse. Stuniverse: You're welcome. Francesco Baiano [Coach] is speaking to the Italian media for me so I have time. The Bhoys: Is it good to be back at Celtic Park? Stuniverse: Yes. This is just like old times, talking to you. We left after the season, and after the players had gone on their summer break, so we didn't have a chance to say a proper goodbye to the players and the fans. I was keen to come back to Celtic Park as soon as possible to do that and I'm delighted Celtic and Sampdoria were able to arrange this friendly game so quickly. The Bhoys: What can we expect from your Sampdoria team today? Stuniverse: I don't know [laughs] I honestly have no idea. We've had a good first week in training but things have been slow, due to the language barrier, but that's improved now we have Francesco Baiano in who speaks both Italian and English and Jari Litmanen [Assistant Manager] can speak Spanish which, as a romance language, is very similar to Italian. Unlike Celtic who have already played three friendly games, this is our first run out so I'm sure we'll be a bit rusty by comparison and, as you know, I always like to give 22 players 45 minutes in their legs in the first friendly and I expect that's what we'll do today. The Bhoys: Having already stolen Chancel Mbemba from us, will you be stealing any more Celtic players? The Scottish press are full of stories about Shankland, although the Italian media seems quiet on that. Stuniverse: To be honest, I'm surprised we got Chancel. Celtic are going to win everything in Scotland again this season or, if not, come very close and are also in the European Champions Cup whereas Sampdoria aren't in Europe and finished 14th last campaign. Besides, even if I wanted to, there's a strict nonEU player rule in Italy that makes it very difficult to sign and register nonEU players. The Bhoys: So why did you decide to leave Celtic then? Stuniverse: Don't get me wrong, I loved my time managing in Scotland and particularly the two years I had here at Celtic Park. We won five out of six domestic trophies in two seasons and had a very good run in Europe during our first season. I just felt that after two seasons of managing the best team in Scotland by a country mile, I was ready for a new challenge. Sampdoria offered me that challenge in Italy and, whilst it won't happen overnight, or even next season, I believe I can make Sampdoria a force in Italy again. The Bhoys: What was your proudest moment as Celtic manager? Stuniverse: Wow! There's so many to choose from. Beating Rangers in every Old Firm derby except one. Winning the Premiership twice and breaking through the 100 points barrier last season. Winning the Betfred Cup twice. The great run in Europe we had that first season but, if pressed, I think I'd have to say beating Rangers 6-1 in last season's Betfred Cup Final. Having lost to Rangers in the Scottish Cup Final the previous season, it was an amazing feeling to get revenge in the Betfred Cup Final the following season... and in some style too. I'd like to say a massive thank you to all the Celtic fans for getting behind us from day one. They were truly magnificent and we all appreciated that. Sampdoria team news Unavailable: Francesco Gagliardi (Italy U19), Alex Noselli (Italy U19), Vito Grandini (pulled ankle ligaments). Doubtful: Simone Zaza (tight calf-90), Daniel Vispo (bruised knee-90), Lamine Diaby Fadiga (twisted knee-90). The Bhoys: Good luck at Sampdoria, apart from today. Stuniverse: [laughs] Thank you. Stuniverse
20 July 2025 WHO IS TRIALIST 1? Blucerchiati Messaggero: The question most Sampdoria fans are asking today is: Who is Trialist 1 named on the bench for today's match at Celtic? Sampdoria are keeping somewhat quiet on this one although, we understand, manager Stuniverse plans to give Trialist 1 a 45-minute run out in the second-half and, we believe, the player is former Genoa central midfielder Mattia Zaccagni. Sampdoria have said we'll recognise him when we see him play and, during the pre-match warm-up, he certainly looks like 30 year-old Zaccagni, who made seven Serie A appearances for Genoa during the last two seasons. Stuniverse
Sunday 20th July 2025 Celtic v Sampdoria - Pre-season Friendly (1) Team Selection Highlights A first-half in which Celtic had the greater possession, but Sampdoria created more chances, ended goalless, with Celtic having their goalkeeper Robby McCrorie to thank that they weren't behind at the break. HT: Celtic 0-0 Sampdoria Sampdoria made eleven changes during the break and changed to a 4-4-2 formation. 58 minutes. Sampdoria's right-back Ricardo Esgaio appeared to twist his ankle and was replaced by the only substitute Sampdoria had left, Andrea Chiodo, a natural right-winger. 62 minutes. Sampdoria took the lead when former Celtic player Chancel Mbemba brought the ball out from defence and into Celtic's half, sprayed a pass out wide to Andrea Chiodo, who beat his man easily, broke into the penalty area, and crossed for Stefano Pezzella to head home. 77 minutes. Celtic should've equalised when Lawrence Shankland put Michael Ruth clean through but Matteo Soncin, in the Sampdoria goal, made an unbelievable save to deny him. FT: Celtic 0-1 Sampdoria The Bhoys: It pains me to say this but, congratulations on the win. Stuniverse: Thank you. The Bhoys: If that's how your Sampdoria team play when the're rusty, look out Serie A when the rust wears off. Stuniverse: I must admit, for our first pre-season friendly, I was very happy with our performance in both halves. All 23 players put in a decent shift and showed an understanding of how we want them to play. I don't think Celtic were at full-strength, with Karamoko Dembele and Stevie Mallan missing but, even so, I know Gaetan Bong has inherited a very good squad from me and it says a lot about my players that they were able to win away at Celtic Park. The Bhoys: After his performance today, I wish we still had Mbemba? Stuniverse: Sampdoria finished 14th in Serie A last season and were somewhat, shall we say, goal shy. Although that's something I'm looking to improve, I know that we need to be really solid and difficult to score against this season to give us a foundation from which to build. In Chancel Mbemba, I know exactly what I'm going to get and he never let me down at Celtic. I'm delighted Chancel agreed to join us and we saw today exactly what he brings to a side. Chancel reads the game well and defends with a calm assurity that spreads across the backline and the whole team. On top of that, his technical ability on the ball is right up there. Today, Chancel started the move that lead to the only goal, coolly intercepting the ball, bringing it out of defence, and releasing Andrea Chiodo down the right wing. The Bhoys: Your other new signing didn't do bad either. Stuniverse: Yes, Matteo Soncin saved us a couple of times. First when Lawrence Shankland put Michael Ruth clean through for, what looked like a certain equaliser, the save from Matteo was world class. And then, later, when Grant Thomson broke through down our left flank, Matteo remained composed, stayed on his feet, made himself big, and collected the ball off Grant's boots, although Gaetan Bong will need to work with him on that because Grant loooked like he wasn't sure what to do. The Bhoys: Next stop China, I understand. Stuniverse: Yes. The training camp was organised before I took the manager's job but I'm more than happy to go along with it. We play four Chinese Super League teams, which will test our squad, and it's a great opportunity for us all to bond and get to know each other better, and for us to get our messages across to the players. The Bhoys: Good luck at Sampdoria. Stuniverse: Thank you. Please LIKE if you enjoyed this update and FOLLOW the thread so you don't miss future updates. Francesco Baiano (Coach): Four matches against Chinese Super League teams and that's going to test our players, including three who have joined us during this Training Camp. Performances are important but we're mainly focussing on fitness. For the first two matches we plan to give the players 90 minutes out of the 180 so they'll get an hour in one and half-an-hour in the other. For the third and fourth matches we'll look to give the players 90 minutes in one game or the other. Blucerchiati Messaggero: Do you expect more signings joining you in China? Francesco Baiano: Our Director of Football Carlo Osti, and manager Stuniverse, are working hard to that end but whether anything will get sorted before the Training Camp ends, I'm not sure. Stuniverse
Sunday 3rd August 2025 Pre-match v Modena (a) - Pre-season friendly (6) Match Preview Unavailable: Ricardo Esgaio (twisted ankle). Doubtful: Simone Zaza (tight calf-90), Vito Grandini (pulled ankle ligaments-45). Blucerchiati Messaggero: Now that you're back in Italy, after your Training Camp in China, what are your plans for the friendly match at Serie C/B Modena? Francesco Baiano (Coach): In China we focussed mainly on 22 players to build up their match fitness from 30 minutes, to 60 minutes, to 90 minutes. That meant that quite a few of the players on our training camp didn't get too much competitive playing time. Against Modena we plan to give playing time to the players who didn't play much in China, including Simone Zaza, who hasn't featured so far due to a tight calf, and Daniel Vispo who's fully recovered from a bruised knee. Blucerchiati Messaggero: How's Stuniverse getting on learning Italian? Francesco Baiano (Coach): Stuniverse has picked up a few words, but I'm having to help him communicate his messages to the players. He's getting there, but it'll be some time yet until you get to speak to him instead of me. Please LIKE if you enjoyed this update and FOLLOW the thread so you don't miss future updates.
