when i click to see a game played or when i go to play a game this message comes up "XML parsing error...not well-formed (invalid token) at line 1 of speed.xml

I can't play the game due to an XML parsing error
If you have a shortcut on your desktop you can do the following:

Right-click on the FM shortcut.

Choose "Properties" from the pop-up menu.

In the "Target" field, add the --reset_preferences command line option after "fm.exe", so it should look like this:

"C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\fm.exe" --reset_preferences

Press OK and then try to run the game as normal, using the shortcut.

You'll want to remove the command after you run the game, as otherwise it will continue to reset your preferences every time you launch.

If you don't have a shortcut you can make one and then perform the instructions on the shortcut you've made.

If you purchased and installed the game through Steam you should be able to find the fm.exe in the following directory:

C:/Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/Common/Football Manager 2009/

If you purchased and installed the game from a boxed DVD copy you should be able to find the fm.exe in the following directory:

C:/Program Files/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2009/

Other XML Errors

Delete the following folder:

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\settings

Vista: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\settings

This may solve some issues regarding the XML Errors

Does the game crash whenever you attempt to access the Preferences screen?
i.e. both via its button when you're on the Main Menu or from the Options menu during a saved game.

yeh it crashes with both buttons ..on the main menu or the options menu... really weird... hope u can find a solution..thanks

Can anyone help me with the installing DirectX SKD problem? I get error S1023, I've tried everything!

This is taken from another user who experienced the same error as you:

mate i had the exact same problem
do what i sed above

download it when on a main administrator profile

then install it whilst logged in to another profile (create one if u need to) then it should work because mine did and i had the same error code and everything

log back into main admin profile and play the game

It would be located at C:\Users\<YOUR USER NAME>\Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\crash dumps.

Once you do, please let me know its filename.

- Delete all sub-folders in this (the 'Settings' folder). Do not delete the entire "Football Manager 2009" folder

- Now try to run the game.

Sorry for the late reply, Frazori.
I realise you've stated un-installing/re-installing on probably more than one occasion. However, assuming you haven't done so already, I'd suggest you do so again, but this time make sure it's a complete removal of all your FM 09 related files.

To do so, you'll need to do the following:

- Run the un-installer

Once you've done all of the above, try a re-install, get the patch, and try to run a new game or one of your backed up saved games.

Give this a go, and see how it goes. Alternatively, if you've performed this in one of your previous un-installs to no avail, please let me know too.

after it i checked on steam and it was showing that fm was still installed so i checked if it would work and it did. it went all the way to the opening menu thing. I didnt go any further because i thought i was meant to reinstall it first.

If the game opened fine, and you've loaded your saved game without any problems, then things seem to be working correctly

If it's any consolation, you're not alone (http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php?t=55964). Let me ask around to see if I can find any more information on this - might not get back immediately.

I suppose it could be worse, as I'm assuming it's not absolutely gameplay critical for you to make changes via the Preferences.

One last question I have is if you were having the same problems before you installed the patch. If you never got the chance to run the game pre-patch, then if you have a few minutes to spare you may want to give that a go to see if you have similar problems when accessing the Preferences screen.

Does downloading from Steam work any better, I have bought the game by Disk.

If you've been having problems installing via Uniloc, then, yes, I would recommend performing the installation via Steam instead.

First of all you need to turn on hidden files and folders. Go to My Computer and at the top select 'Tools' the 'Folder Options'. The go to the 'View' tab and select 'Show hidden files and folders'

Windows XP:

1. Open “My Computer”

2. Navigate to : “Documents and Settings\<Username>\Application Data\

3. Go into the “Sports Interactive” Folder.

4. Delete the “Football Manager XX” Folder.

Wndows Vista:

1. Click “Start”

2. Click your username on the start Menu

3. Click on “AppData” and then “Roaming”

4. Go into the “Sports Interactive” Folder

5. Delete the “Football Manager XX” Folder.

Mac OSX

1. Open Finder.

2. Select <User>

3. Navigate to Library\Caches\Sports Interactive

4. Remove the “Football Manager XX” Folder.

Try the following..

I want to play the game without using Steam but cannot find the desktop icon
You can play it without loading up Steam by doing the following:

Go to C: Program Files - Steam - Steam Apps - common - Football Manager 2008

Inside this folder you will find the FM09.exe

Create a shortcut here, and drag it onto your desktop

The game will now work without running steam - make sure Steam is NOT already running when you do this.

Hi. I installed through steam and all was well until I came to play my first match and the screen froze and all the XML parsing errors came up. I tried putting in "C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\fm.exe" --reset_preferences, in the target field but my computer said it was an invalid path. (I am running through Vista) So I uninstalled steam and the game to try an re-install, but now when I put the DVD in nothing happens. I cant get the game to install through clicking it through the C: either. Thanks in advance.

If the game opened fine, and you've loaded your saved game without any problems, then things seem to be working correctly

Hi

Hope someone can help me i installed fm09 with no problems and started playing it everything was fine until i came to my first match as soon as i submitted my team the game froze. I re-installed the game but the problem continued, i then disabled the 3d cameras but this also made no difference (apart from one occasion). I took my game back to the shop and got a replacement but still the same problem, im 99.9% sure my laptop is powerful enough to run the game. any help would be much appreciated.

I´ve installed FM 09 through STEAM and the game worked fine. But i do not like the way to play it through STEAM/Intenet ( Call me oldfashioned :-) )

I deinstalled FM + STEAM and afterwards i tried to install FM the "normal way" direct on my C drive with a shortcut on the desk.

All this without problems - BUT when i want to play the game after re-installing i am not able to start - it gives me following message :

COULD NOT USE DATABASE LOCATION ´C/programmes/steam/steamapps/common/fm2009/data/updates/update-910/db/910´ - reverting to the default location !!!!

What do i do ? I deinstalled both STEAM and FM the right way through ( i didnt just delete it on the C-drive )

I realise it is something about the patch. Does anyone seem to help me ?

I try launch the data editor and immediatly get this message.

This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

It doesn't, any ideas ??

I have downloaded FM 09, But i didnt have any options to download steam etc, It finished down loading and when ive launched the game it says....

THE APPLICATION FAILED TO INTIALIZE PROPERLY (0XC0150002)

Hi,

got the graphics problem so downloaded the update from the Microsoft Direct X SDK. Game now loads up, but where i should get the front screen, i now get a black screen with a little white/grey diagam in the bottom right hand corner.

Is this due to the fact that i only have a intel celeron 1.30ghz processor and 64mb memory which are both below requirements. I thought it meant i could still play in 2d though.

Any ideas?

On Vista, right click anywhere on the desktop and select 'Personalize'. Then choose 'Display Settings'.
On the other hand, if you're on XP, right click once again on any empty space on desktop and select 'Properties'. Then, you must choose the 'Settings' tab.

Try changing the resolution (if possible) to one higher than your current one.

I started to install FM yesterday before I got to the bit where you have to register the game online. I installed steam but it wouldn't accept my code so thought I'd wait a bit. Something came up with the other activation program (i can't remember what it's called!) and it activated my code on there. Then the computer crashed so I thought I'd start again... I removed whatever was already on my computer (through the add and remove programs thing) and tried to install it again. But now I can't get the disc to run at all! I tried going through add and remove programs to install it but my computer freezes when it gets to the bit saying Run Installation Program. The program that comes up is e://setup.ex and when I press finish a little black screen comes up and nothing happens.

Should it be a different installation program or something? I know nothing about computers!

If it's already been answered on here sorry!

Also, I've still got steam installed on my computer - if this will make a difference?

Hey Pierre,

Are you sure your computer's disc drive is a DVD drive? The drive probably doesn't read the FM 09 DVD, because it is a CD drive. And, that's why you'll need to re-install the game once again via Steam.

As for the xml errors you're facing, here's another potential workaround - you must delete the following:

C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009 Demo\settings\ (using Windows Explorer, AppData is hidden but you should get to it by typing the path)

Then, try to run the game and let us know if it fixed this issue.

This is a problem that more than a few people seem to be experiencing, unfortunately.

I'll have to bring out my check-list to see if you've installed any of the below:

1- The v9.1.0 patch? (http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php?t=60961)

2- The Microsoft Direct X SDK? (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=5493F76A-6D37-478D-BA17-28B1CCA4865A&displaylang=en)

3- Your computer's latest graphics drivers? (you'll need to give me the name of your graphics card for me to chase it down - if you don't know it you'll have to post your DXDIAG information..

How to get your Dxdiag information
Windows XP

1. Click on “Start”

2. Click on “Run”

3. In the text prompt box that appears type “dxdiag” and click ok.

4. Once the dxdiag program has finished scanning your machine click “Save All Information” save this to a place you will remember.

5. Copy and past these as/where needed.

Wndows Vista

1. Click on “Start”

2. Click inside the search box

3. In the search box type “dxdiag” and click ok.

4. Once the dxdiag program has finished scanning your machine click “Save All Information” save this to a place you will remember.

Could you please try running the game in 'Windowed' mode?

You can do so via Options -> Preferences -> Display & Sound -> Display Mode (drop menu).

Hey nesta1978,

Firsly, I should state that if you've installed the game via Steam..

1) you do not need to have Steam running to launch the game.

You can run it directly via C:/Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/Common/Football Manager 2009/ - the FM.exe should be found there.

Perhaps create a desktop shortcut for it.

However, please make sure Steam is NOT already running when you do this.

2) thus, you not need to be connected to the Internet to run the game either, as you've suspected.

With that cleared up, the error message you are getting related to the db - is it terminal in nature? i.e. it crashes the game or could you play on despite it being prompted.

It seems as though you didn't manage a clean uninstall (some files from your previous install were left behind).

You can either try to re-install once again via Steam, seeing as you experienced no problems with it and that I clarified earlier that you can run the game without Steam being open.

Or, you can try to delete the following:

The editor issue should be solved by performing the following:

XP Users
Click the links below and download the two files, then install the files in the order they are listed here. When the installation of the last file is complete re-start the computer.
