SI Staff Blue Lou Posted May 30, 2018 SI Staff Share Posted May 30, 2018 https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-soccer-worldcup-var/refs-to-get-var-help-for-red-cards-at-world-cup-idUKKCN1IV08T Quote Referees at the World Cup finals will be able to dish out red cards for off-the-ball incidents spotted by Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, soccer’s rule-making body IFAB has said. “If there is something away from the action that has been missed and it later comes to the attention of the VAR or the assistant VAR, then they can inform the referee and he can send the player off, even if it is later in the match,” IFAB technical director David Elleray told The Times. “We do not anticipate this happening very often... this would only be for serious red-card offences.” The VAR system will be rolled out for the first time at a World Cup at the June 14 to July 15 tournament in Russia. GunmaN1905
They already do that in Serie A. Fortunately, got used to it this season. I can already see a lot of people that haven't watched many games with VAR complaining about the delays.
noikeee
This is news or something? Surely it's standard for VAR matches?
PaulHartman71
Not the first time it would have happened at a World Cup tbf

It is standard practice for refereeing everywhere. Referees should act on acts of violent conduct regardless of when they are informed of them. Maple
What happens if the player sent off already been subbed? Treated like getting a red card off the pitch or is the substitution revoked and the team has to play with 10 players?
Mr Wallin
I honestly don't know, it hasn't been much of an issue previously because if something like this is seen by a AR/AAR/4th they would immediately inform the referee and thus the delay is unlikely to be more than a few seconds and thus very little will have happened. Having a VAR finding something on video would inherently mean there is a longer delay and thus more potential for things to have happened in the mean time so it might take some additional guidance to come out. For those interested this is a FIFA video on how VAR's will work during the WC. Some interesting bit on how/what/when TV-viewers and those in the stadium will get information (you have to watch at youtube). https://youtu.be/YdwOL08NfxQ
