MacBallon d'Or

Welcome to SCOTLAND!

498112-the-demand-for-emoji-flags-for-en

Got FM18 for Christmas, thanks Mrs Gizzy. So I'm going to start my first save in Scotland, with Celtic with 1 aim..... for a Scottish player to win The Ballon d'Or Award!

Impossible I hear you shout, perhaps :D

I also hate the Scottish League set up, the split is rubbish, so I've ventured into the data editor and made adjustments to the league.

There is now 3 leagues in Scotland, 16 team top division, 16 team second and a 10 team third. And of course a FA Cup and League Cup.

I will of course do my best to win as much as possible to ensure Scottish football has the best chance of producing a gem in the future, but I will also give a helping hand along the way.

Each season, I will donate at least 20% of my transfer budget to another Scottish club to help them along the way.

I have started without transfer budgets, so will be starting with what I have. We are of course favourites domestically and I will be aiming for at least a league title in my first season, I will use the cups to give youth players a chance of game time.

The Champions League will be the hardest task, and just qualifying for the group stage will be an achievement in year 1.

And there will be absolutely no chance of a Scottish Ballon d'Or winner just yet, we will be patient for that.

2 of my 3 first team CBs are injured long term.

So we will have to move a midfielder back there short term as non of the U23 defenders are ready just yet.

At least 1 defender will need to come in in Jan

To be fair it was a relative easy path to get there but very happy to have done so.

The group stage draw gave us.....

Barca, Benfica and Roma. Ouch!

Not looking good, but we'll give it a good go!

August has came and went and with it the transfer window.

No new signings were made. Had scouting some free transfers, but non impressed me that much.

100% start to the league season. Expected but great to start like that. The injuries have calmed and we now have the Int break to get some players back to fitness.

Will also give an update on how Scotland are doing as we go along. They were without a manager at the start of the game and decided to hire the St Johnstone manager....

The playoffs are possible and even winning the group with some luck.

World ranking needs to be sorted soon. Far too low.

3 League games in September

Fixtures.thumb.png.d71d65d69449cd743591601f98b3ce65.png

100% again. Had to fight right to the end against Hibs, scoring late to win the game. I had rested a few first team players as I had our first CL game next up against Barca.

League Table

Close at the top. Rangers look like they will push all the way.

2 Champions League games in September.

First up, as I said above, we were away to Barcelona. Now I wasn't expecting much from this game. A draw would be a miracle so I was hoping for a low score defeat. And thats just what we got

5a47ca6ae7d69_BarcelonavCeltic_MatchReview.thumb.png.1585ed7068040f22f589c7e1431837f3.png

First half we played really well, although a goal behind the match had been pretty even. Second half Barca went into overdrive and really should've been 3 or 4 goals up. Lucky for us Messi went off injured.

Next up was Roma at home. Now when the group was drawn I fully expected to finish bottom of the group. All 3 opponents are top teams and a few draws wouldn't have been a bad campaign.

We started the match very poorly. 3-0 down after 25 minutes. So much for a couple of draws. But no. Dembele had different ideas, a 14 minute hattrick drew us level at half time

We only went on to win

5a47ca6c5d390_CelticvRoma_MatchReview.thumb.png.b50db1f0be65d8e478d0419a79ede78e.png

Demeble going off injured after his hattrick was the only downside.

Table.thumb.png.68c3457bef825d25743a2740dc2854ef.png

Sitting pretty in 2nd after 2 games. Hopefully Roma lose all their remaining games, don't beat us at home and we finish 3rd :D

Oct 17 Update

3 more games in the league, Rangers coming to Celtic Park to be our biggest test in the league so far.

Fixtures.thumb.png.e875ebbfa790cff81334f08324f3e4c8.png

Still 100% in the league, but all 3 games were tight and hard fought. Dembele came back from injury and scored two late goals to give us the win against Hamilton.

Table.thumb.png.3773766fe73b5f0c06e875ed9b30cded.png

One game in the League Cup. Loads of changes made, some U23s made the match squad.

Happy to be in the next round, more game time for some youngsters. Partick await in the next round.

Then there was 2 games in the CL! Benfica home and away. Went into these games just as I had Barca and Roma. A draw would be good, My players were having none though...

Absolutely smashed then in the away game. They just couldn't handle our counters.

Guaranteed 2nd place and a spot in the knockout rounds

Injuries are starting to build again. Brown the most notable, he is out for 6 months :(

**** you.

In all seriousness though, I think the split gets more hate than it deserves.  It has made the relegation scrap particularly exciting for a number of seasons now given that all the teams in the bottom half have to play each other.  Certainly a better outcome at the end of the season than having, say, top play bottom.  Plus, if you're Thistle, it means you can secure 6th on the last day of the regular season, then spend five games getting absolutely horsed and not care a jot.  Yass.

The Ballon D'Or thing might not be as far-fetched as it seems.  The country always produces some very good players later on, particularly forwards, to the point where it's not out of the question to win major tournaments.  I think I had an absolute star in my long-term Scotland save who came close to the Ballon D'Or - maybe I could have pushed him that little bit further if I was managing him at club level too.

I guess the league title being wrapped up before the split even happens annoys me :D

Hopefully you're right and my aim can actually be achieved

Nov 17 Update

It wouldn't FM without a player coming to you and telling you he wants to leave. Man City are interested and Dembele can no longer bare to stay in Scotland.

I've told him I'll accept an acceptable offer of £40m, he's scoffed at that and went in a huff.

To league matters.....

Fixtures.thumb.png.1d0e8f3651725a481b7434003b986c47.png

Still 100%, wonder how much longer we can go on like this. I hope all season :D

Table.thumb.png.d972fc9be6767fc739c4243b53e2840c.png

After Brendan's advise above, I made sure Messi was given extra attention in our home match against Barca. It worked....

5a48089c13d3d_CelticvBarcelona_MatchReview.thumb.png.7717650ec8382a0ab3273a82f9c39a96.png

A great performance, it wasn;t smash and grab. We played much better than them and deserved the 3 points. Hopefully at least a draw away to Roma and we will finish top. No one would've predicted this when the group was drawn. Madness!

The only blip on an otherwise perfect month was our 2nd round league cup match. I again played the youngsters, but it seems you can't win anything with kids :(

Dec 17 Update

A bumper month of league fixtures. 5 in total, and you guessed it. 5 wins!

Fixtures.thumb.png.c94bbc29a093edbfc5d44633b441b298.png

Table.thumb.png.c964a62e9c3467e3d278b9366ead49fe.png

Rangers are absolutely relentless, if I do go on a bit of a wobble they are right there to make us look a bit silly.

Roma away was our last CL group game, even though we were through to the next round I still wanted at least the draw to see us top the group. Or at least thats what I thought.

5a48f6c360ff6_RomavCeltic_MatchReview.thumb.png.a181ab97607af525b26d4beb8a8cd394.png

A 1-1 Draw. We looked in complete control until the sending off.

5a48f6b97eab2_CLTable.thumb.png.93ce354b2c45c7b97b9dda3a12e472b9.png

But somehow we are 2nd. The group should go off head to head, so I thought we would be above Barca as we won 2-1 and home and lost 1-0 away.

But nevermind, as the next round draw has given us some hope....

5a48f6c1b9d01_OTFGizzy_Inbox-3.thumb.png.d0845d1a0ce42dc7ee8e68d7e4239b9b.png

Avoided Bayern, Spurs, City and Liverpool so happy with that.

If the two Barcelona games had been a 2 leg tie, it would have finished 2-2 and you would have 'lost' on away goals due to the 2-1 win in Glasgow, so it looks like the head to head rule works as expected.

Nice start to your career - I can imagine that it will take a few seasons to get a high class youngster through and then another few seasons to get him up to Ballon D'Or standard, so this looks like an interesting medium to long-term challenge.

Made 2 more transfers in the Jan window.

Needed some cover for left back, and found a nice little cheap option.

Stirling Albion. I also loaned him back for the duration of his Celtic contract.

Feb 18 Update

Major disappointment at the end of Jan when our only senior goalkeeper Craig Gordon got injured. Had to throw the young backup straight in.

It lead to a little indifferent form in the league, he also wouldn't be back for our first leg CL knockout game.

Fixtures.thumb.png.ad1616fb22d3d1f70b999634e4ba524f.png

Two 2-2 draws is really bad considering Rangers just kept on winning, breaking the record for consecutive cleans sheets too.

Table.thumb.png.8cd7842630e2777b7907f9e4779d0c42.png

Still top, but no slips ups can be made. Rangers up next in the league, could determine who the champions will be.

RB Leipzig were our opponents in the Champions League. Home leg first, hoped for at least a slender lend to take to Germany.

Looking good for advancing to the next round. What does RB stand for? REALLY BAD? :D

We also had another Scottish Cup game. Played a few players on the fringes. Great performance by Ntcham who bagged a hattrick

A nice little cushion at the top now. Only the 2 Old Firm games are separating us

Scottish Cup 4th round. A chance for some more youngsters to impress.

5a4a564a44fad_CelticvPartickThistle_MatchReview.thumb.png.3f22cfb73672d97ddcdf4d3bcde19a8e.png

5a4a564cd3930_RBLeipzigvCeltic_MatchReview.thumb.png.ca8100ff9c1b43d7f19e4565ffdacd06.png

A loss but a great result overall. Into the CL QFs. No one would've thought this was possible at the start of the season.

EPL leaders Man Utd await in the next round.

Mini Update

Announcement!!

We have suffered our first league defeat of the season. After 26 games undefeated, our heart has been broken by....Hearts.

Away to Hearts fell inbetween the 2 Man Utd CL games, and let me tell you.....It was worth it.

Old Trafford was up first. As tough away day as they come, and we were up against it.

5a4a6076cb42b_ManUtdvCeltic_MatchReview.thumb.png.4557c4bf32e02ad3ee5d42338c1dc6b3.png

Utd had a goal disallowed early in the first half, and we did our best to keep them out for the rest of the game.

Then we made 10 changes for the hearts game. It was close until Scott Brown, who was returning after 6 months out, got sent off. Then Hearts took control.

5a4a607513e42_HeartsvCeltic_MatchReview.thumb.png.4d8e29278b018887d0e0d2c5a30aa17d.png

But as I said, the all new line up and defeat were well worth it. As the fully rested team for the 2nd leg proved their quality.

This is getting silly now :D

Champions League Semi Final 1st leg was away in Paris to PSG.

They played very well and really should have been more than 2-0 up.

5a4a74cf66db1_PSGvCeltic_MatchReview.thumb.png.bff5f6c68d086103a1c1e7cec5beaa33.png

It looked like we were out, and our fun and games in the CL was over. Or so I thought.

5a4a74cdc05a8_CelticvPSG_MatchReview.thumb.png.3222905b0719573b256cc9c1b67822af.png

Final is now against Man City. It seems Celtic park plays a massive part in these games, maybe too much impact. So a natural final may be a step too far for us.

End of Season Update

4 league games in April and May and a butt load of cup games.

Fixtures.thumb.png.6bfedfa3dadba4602ede6d6815f35101.png

After the aforementioned defeat to Hearts we wrapped up the league with winning our last three games. Rangers also dropped points so we won it with 2 games to spare.

Table.thumb.png.418f25b0ca600bb472ab1161a99b7d27.png

12 points was the gap in the end, it was tight for so long. Rangers sacked their manager too, which I found a bit harsh.

SPL Champions, so our main objective has been achieved.

Next up is the Scottish Cup.

5a4b83cc43cec_OTFGizzy_SocialFeed.thumb.png.b2a934482119865e1dcdf2e424cbaf04.png

Liverpool sacked Klopp in March when they were in 5th place, 2 points away from 3rd. That was strange in it's self.

Then at the end of the season they pay Real £20m to get ZZ. Madness on all fronts!!

Feels a bit weird continuing, but I'm going to try. Going to clear out some of the non Scottish players and replace with Scottish youngsters. See if we can we the CL again, but with mostly Scottish players.
