The rise of an unlikely Asian star

In the dressing room of the National Stadium, the mood was gloomy in the Woodlands camp. You really could sense the disappointment. They've thrown away a potential double, and once again lived up to their reputations as chokers. Even the ever-positive coach Jorg Steinbrunner was at a loss for words.

Finally, a voice spoke up. It was Luqman, the keeper.

"Guys, I'm sorry for that mistake. Really. Especially to Ben. Sorry man, I made you score an own goal."

A brief silence, then applause followed. The team gather round, and encouraged the poor keeper. "Don't worry, everybody makes mistakes" defender Lucien Dronca said.

Ben stayed silent. He wasn't angry. He was just a bit confused. Who could blame him? So much has happened over the past week, and even more was to come for this young man.

Ben, a question.

Are you actually playing a game of FM here? Just curious. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Nope, it's all made up. Off the top of my head. icon_wink.gif </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Ben, if you're not joking there and this story isn't based on the game, then I'm afraid it raises some issues. This forum is for stories based on SI management games, and if we allow ones made up out of thin air, it could open a whole can of worms.

I'm going to close this temporarily whilst I consult with my fellow mods.

OK, Ben, the forum moderators have discussed this and, whilst we are all wary of opening the floodgates on stories which are not actually based on the playing of the game, we have decided to give this story special dispensation.

We are willing to let this story become a one-off trial on non-FM football stories whilst we make a definitive decision on the future of such stories.

Best of luck with the tale, Ben icon_smile.gif

Ah, well. Thanks. Thought I'd explain a couple of things here.

Firstly, I did state it was entirely fictional right at the start, so it did surprise me that I was only questioned about it now.

Also, although I know this story isn't based on an actual game I've played, I was inspired by the game to actually write a story, so perhaps in a way it is FM-related.

That said, I understand now what sort of stories are allowed here, and thankfully I am allowed to continue this. Cheers to you people for being understanding.

Phew, that was a bit close. Now that I've got a second chance, I suppose I shouldn't take this for granted, and try to update as much as I can. Once again, many thanks to all who have supported this story. It means a lot to me. icon_smile.gif

At the end of the season, the entire Woodlands squad was given time off to go on holiday. All except for Ben, of course. He recieved a phone call...

"Ring ring!"

Ben: Hello.

Arsene Wenger: Ben, it's Mr Wenger here

B: Oh, hi Sir.

W: Ben, I've heard about the losses.

B: (sounding a bit resigned) Yeah...

W: Don't worry about it. Every professional faces some sort of setback in their careers. You'll get over it, I'm sure about that.

B: Thank you Sir.

W: Anyway, I have some good news. We're recalling you back from your loan, and you're returning to Arsenal.

B: Oh.

W: We'll be making the arrangments for you to fly back to London, so don't worry about that.

To be honest, that wasn't totally good news for Ben. He was loath to face another long haul flight to London, but of course, he wasn't in any position to refuse. Arsenal are after all his employers.

B: Alrite then.

W: OK. I'll see you when you're in London.

After yet another overnight flight to London (Ben was already getting tired of the 'entertainment' on Singapore Airlines' First Class), Ben arrived at Heathrow exhausted and jet-lagged. Nevertheless he made his way to The Emirates Stadium.

He met up with Wenger in his office once again.

W: How was the flight Ben?

B: To be honest, a bit tiring.

W: I see. Anyway, to underline the long term commitment we have towards you, we managed to get an apartment for you near the ground, which is where you'll stay when you're in London. All expenses will be paid by the club as best as we can. If there's anything you need just ask.

B: OK.

W: Anyway, we've recalled you back because we might be hoping to play you. We're facing a bit of a defensive crisis at the moment. Who knows, you might even get a shot at the first team.

B: That would be nice Sir, but honestly, I'm a bit tired after all that exploits and flying. So perhaps I can get some rest first?

W: Sure, we won't rush you into action. We'll only play you when you're ready.

B: Thank you Sir.

W: Now, I suppose you should get to your new apartment and get unpacking.

B: I will sir.

It was November, Christmas was coming, and Ben was thousands of miles away from his friends and family. To say he was getting a bit jaded and homesick would be fairly accurate. What intially seemed like a dream now didn't look all that wonderful after all.

Cheers mate.icon_biggrin.gif Sorry for the delay, but I'm a bit busy lately.

Ben sat in his apartment, in a dilemma.

On the one hand, he was finally in London, with his boyhood club actually wanting him to play for them. It was a lifelong dream come true.

Yet on the other hand, it just didn't seem like the right time. Everything has happened so suddenly, and young Ben haven't had time to adapt. He didn't even had time to say goodbye to his family and friends.

So he did what every troubled man in London would do.

He went to the pub.

Cheers guys. I do wish it as actually true about the WP bit. I soooo want to go work there as a car journo. icon_wink.gif

On the televison at the pub...

Sky Sports News: "Arsenal has recalled their young Singaporean defender from his loan spell at Woodlands in Singapore. Ben Cee has only played two games for the northern Singaporean team, one of them a disastrous cup final in which Ben scored an own goal to condemn Woodlands to defeat. The jury's still out for this young man. Will Arsene Wenger's gamble pay off? It's looking quite unlikely at the moment. But Wenger have always been producing gems from nowhere. Will Ben be a Toure or a Stepanovs? Only time will tell."

Sigh. The pressure's on Ben now. The British media is now constantly scrutinising him, looking to find chinks in his armour, hoping that he'll fail and finally 'go home to his island', as one newspaper harshly put it. It all wasn't helping him to settle.

To top it off, he was lonely. Other than the club staff and Chris (whom he hadn't heard from since he returned to London), he knew nobody at all in London. Until...

An attractive blonde walked up to the forlorn looking Ben, and tapped him on the shoulder.

"Hey, you look familiar. Aren't you..."

"Yeah..." Ben sighed.

"Must be terrible for you at the moment. All that scrutiny by the media. Do you have any friends here in London?"

"Not really."

"My name's Rachel. You don't look so bad for someone who's jet-lagged."

"Thanks." Ben started to smile. This could be interesting.

Ooh, the story's starting to go on a bit of a tangent now. icon_wink.gif

Rachel was a bit of a rare breed, in that she's an attractive female football fan. She doesn't actually play the game, but she still follows it all the same.

Another surprise. Rachel was an Arsenal fan too. Though it was the all-conquering quadraple-winning Ladies team rather than the men's team, but she still keeps up to date with the main team news as well.

Rachel also lived near Ben. This was turning out to be an interesting evening.

Ben: Hi, I'm... B...Ben.

Rachel: I already know that, silly boy.

Ben blushed in embarrassment. He was always shy around girls, but he tried to muster up some courage.

B: Would you...like to...come to my apartment? For a chat maybe. Maybe help me unpack my stuff?

An unusual request, but the bemused Rachel could only chuckle and agreed. She was starting to like this young man.

Back at the apartment...

Rachel: So, Ben, what's Singapore like?

Ben: It's erm, sunny, but it rains too. Sometimes both happen together.(Rachel laughs) It's quite urban too, much like London.

R: Hehe. I see. So how are you finding London so far?

B: Erm, okay I guess. But it's been a lot better since I met you.

It's so hard not to like this guy. Ben's cute innocence was starting to turn Rachel on.

R: Aww... That's so sweet. Oh, it's getting late now. Tell you what, dinner tomorrow?

B: Oh, OK. Sure!

They exchanged numbers and Rachel bade Ben farewell with a kiss. It certainly won't be the last he'll receive from her.

Coming up, back to the football...

The next day, Ben turned up at The Emirates all cheery. Certainly a complete turnaround from 24 hours earlier. It surprised more than a few people.

"What's happened to you young man?" Assistant Manager Pat Rice enquired.

"Oh nothing. Just settling in well." Ben replied cheerily.

"That's good then. Suit up and get ready boy." came the reply.

Youth Coach Steve Bould decided to start the day off with a 5-a-side match between the youngsters, with Ben in defence. The first team coaches along with Wenger and Rice were watching as well.

Being young men they certainly weren't shirking in their tackles. It was a hot-blooded match that nearly boiled over at a few points. Ben soon found himself on the ball, but...

"Arrgh! You son of a..." he screamed.

Young Irish striker Anthony Stokes, who had just returned from a loan spell from Falkirk up in Scotland, had went in on Ben with a high and rather dangerous challenge.

"Get up you Asian *****! Stop being such a wuss, you Chinese monkey! Going down like a girl you are!"

Everyone else watching was stunned. Arsene Wenger immediately ordered the match to be stopped and asked Anthony to follow him to his office.

The training ground was silent as Ben writhed on the ground in pain.

Well...

In the physio room, Gary Lewin gave Ben the once over.

"It doesn't look good son. Looks like a broken ankle."

"Oh. Dammit." Ben cursed under his breath.

"You might need to see a specialist. I think it'll heal in around, say, six months?"

That wasn't what Ben wanted to hear. Just when everything was going well too. Ben was utterly gutted.

Link to post

In Arsene Wenger's office...

Wenger: Well Anthony, what happened out there was a disgrace. Care to explain yourself?

Stokes: I don't see anything wrong with what I did Sir.

Wenger: Not only did you try to deliberately try to injure your teammate, but you shouted racial abuse at him, and yet you are unrepentant. Well, you're going on the transfer list, effective immediately. The club has no room for people like you. Now go!

Stokes shuffled his way out of the office, his Arsenal career effectively over.

Sky Sports News: "Arsenal have agreed a fee with Sunderland for young striker Anthony Stokes. Sources have reported that Stokes was involved with a bust-up with Singaporean Ben Cee, which has left the young defender out injured for a significent period of time. Though there has been no official comment from the club or the players involved, newspapers have started to question Wenger's overprotectiveness of Cee. This is..."

Ben turned off the television. The ruthless hacks have once again gone into overdrive with the story, with many using the mantra of Wenger molly-coddling 'baby Ben', with nobody allowed to touch him or risk the manager's wrath.

That certainly wasn't true at all. Ben wasn't given preferential treatment by the manager, nor did he want to. All he wanted was to work hard and play for his boyhood club.

There was a knock on the door, and Ben hobbled over to open it.

"Ben! I've heard the news. Are you all right?" Rachel shrieked, giving Ben a bit of a shock.

"Well, erm, yeah. I'm okay."

"Sit down. Are you hungry? I'll cook dinner for you." Rachel offered.

Well, at least there's still some nice people around during times like this, Ben thought.

Rachel managed to set up a candlelight dinner in Ben's scruffy apartment. It didn't amount to much, and dinner was only simple spaghetti, but it'll do.

"So, is this officially a date?" Ben asked cheekily.

"Well, I suppose so." Rachel smiled.

"You know, I've never actually had a girlfriend before."

"Really?" Rachel looked surprised.

"Though I suppose you could be my first." Ben said, not flinching at all.

"Aww." Rachel started to blush. "Shucks. Okay then."

Sorry for all the romantic mush, but with Ben out of action with injury, he has to find some action elsewhere. icon_wink.gif

Anyway, a bit more about Rachel...

Ben certainly wasn't the top earner at Arsenal, and the 200 pounds he gets a week was barely enough for him to get by in expensive London. So in a way he was lucky to have 'found' Rachel.

Rachel was a part-time model by day, and her dad Aaron was a retired professional footballer, who despite not being a big name in world football, earned enough to give her a fairly good life. Her mum, unfortunately, passed away when she was a small kid.

So you could say that Rachel has a bit of financial clout, and it looks like in the early days of her relationship with Ben, she will have to support him rather than him supporting her. It doesn't seem very romantic nor gentlemanly, and if given the choice Ben wouldn't like to depend on her, but in the real world that is the harsh reality.

Ben promised that when he makes it big, he'll repay her in a big way. Note the 'when', rather than 'if'. He certainly has lots of confidence in his ability, despite the blow he has received.

Anyway, back to the story...

After dinner, Ben plonked himself on the couch to watch some football.

Typical, thought Rachel. But she joined him anyway.

Soon though, she started whispering in his ear.

"Ben" she started

"Hmm?" Ben mumbled, not really paying attention.

"Do you think I should move in with you?"

"Huh? What?!" Ben jolted a little.

"Oh come on. Surely you need someone to look after you when you're injured!" countered Rachel.

"B...but, we've only just known each other!" Which was true in a way.

"But we're boyfriend and girlfriend, no?"

"But...I only have a single bed!" Ben was desperately trying to find excuses to dissuade Rachel from the idea.

"I'll buy a double bed then!" She was fast losing her temper.

Ben, sensing the tension rising, and not wanting to 'lose' his new girlfriend, agreed reluctantly.

That appeased Rachel, and she went back to her sexy voice,

"I love you Ben..." she whispered back into his ear.

Ben turned to look at her, and they kissed, which then led to a bit more...

Ugh, bit tough writing that. icon_razz.gif

Well, I'll leave you guys to imagine what went on...

The next morning, Ben woke up, trying his best not to disturb Rachel. But it didn't matter, for she was awake too.

"That was fun last night." she said cheerfully.

"Yeah" Ben smiled, but he was already thinking of other things.

"Shall we go again?"

"Oh, no no. I have to see a specialist today about my ankle." Ben quickly replied.

"I see. Breakfast?"

"Okay then."

After breakfast, Ben got dressed and hobbled out the door. Rachel would accompany him to the specialist, then go shopping for that 'double bed' she mentioned last night. After all, it was a bit uncomfortable doing it on a bed meant for one...

Link to post

At the specialist...

"Well, doctor, what do you think about the ankle?" Ben enquired.

"Hmm," the doctor pondered.

"You're lucky that you're a young man, so there's still time for this to heal. There's only so much I can do in terms of medication and injections, but the most important thing is not to overwork the joint. No streneous activity for the next six months until it's fully recovered. You will also have to come back once a month, if only for me to monitor yor progress."

"I see", Ben nodded, though not exactly understanding what constituted 'streneous activity'.

"I'll inform your boss too. You'll probably won't be training until late May or early June."

"But, what will I do until then?" Ben was surprised.

"There's plenty of things to do young lad. You only need to look around. Go to the gym and work on your other parts. Or just relax at home."

"Right..." Ben wasn't exactly convinced.

"Remember, don't overwork the joint. No streneous activity!" the doc reminded Ben as he hobbled out the door.

Ben decided to drop by the Emirates Stadium and see Wenger.

"What are you doing here Ben?" Wenger was surprised.

"I just decided to drop by, see what I could do." Ben answered.

"Well, not a lot really. I received the doctor's report, and you will be out of training until late May at the earliest."

"What will I do in the meantime then?" Ben was curious.

"Well, you could visit the gym, do some exercises that does not affect your ankles. Or simply hang around here and mingle with the boys. Get to know them better." Arsene suggested.

"Anyway," he continued, "I sold that Stokes boy to Sunderland this morning. He won't be disturbing you anymore."

"I told Roy Keane to sort him out, so he probably will." he added.

Ben was a little surprised at the drastic action, but there's not a lot that could be done anyway. The decision laid with the manager. But it might be interesting should they meet again.

"Thank you Sir for the advice. I'll take my leave now." Ben replied. He'd thought he check up on Rachel.

"You're welcome. Oh, one more thing. We're playing Liverpool in the cup this weekend. You may join us if you want to." Arsene asked Ben.

"Hmm, sounds good."

"I'll get you a ticket then."

"Can I have two?" Ben enquired.

"Two?" Arsene asked, slightly puzzled.

"Erm, yeah" Ben replied sheepishly. "I'm bringing someone along." He was hoping Wenger didn't ask him too much about it.

"Oh, sure. I'll get two tickets for Anfield for you." Arsene agreed readily.

"Thanks boss." And with that, Ben left the stadium with two tickets to Liverpool vs Arsenal.

"That's great!" she exclaimed, the football fan in her returning.

Ben and Rachel made their way up to Anfield on Saturday to watch Arsenal tackle Liverpool in the cup. Wenger had only given them normal tickets instead of box seats, but it's still a seat. They had to made their way to Liverpool themselves instead of with the first team. Not a problem with Rachel's money, for she hired a limo. Lucky Ben.

It wasn't really an exciting match. Tomas Rosicky scored a first-half double to put the Gunners in the lead, but other than that there was nothing much to shout about, especially Liverpool's limp performance.

Second half (and Ben returned from the break with some lovely pies), and again it was more of the same. Fabio Aurelio scored an own goal to put the game beyond Liverpool's reach, and despite Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard's screamer right at the death, it was nothing more than a consolation as Arsenal surprisingly eased past their rivals.

With that, Ben and Rachel made their way back to London, where they were in for a shock...

Ben took the insulting reports to the emirates, and looked for Wenger.

AW: Yes Ben, how can I help you?

BC: Well Sir, I don't know if you have read the papers (throws papers onto the table), but the media have been constantly spreading lies about me ever since I've been here.

AW: (takes a look at the papers) So, who's this lady?

BC: She's my girlfriend Sir. I met her shortly after I came back from my loan spell. She's been really helpful in helping me settle in. Please don't believe those reports Sir. I certainly haven't been spending my money endlessly living the high life.

AW: Hmm. So, what do you intend to do about it?

BC: Well Sir, I was thinking, since I can't be training or playing with the club, maybe I could take a break and go on holiday, until my injury is better and I can return to training?

AW: Hmm, okay. If that's what you want. But I don't think running away is the solution. The media will always be here, even after you have recovered and are playing. You'll just have to deal with it.

BC: I see. Thanks Sir. But at this point in time I just want to live peacefully and let my injury heal, without thinking too much about what the media is saying about me.

AW: Hmm, okay then. I'll let you go on official leave until June. We'll release a press report too, stating that you'll be on a break for your injury and warn the media not to continue spreading lies about you.

BC: Thanks very much Sir.

Arsenal press release: Arsenal Football Club has allowed Singaporean defender Ben Cee to leave the club on a break while he continues his recovery from his ankle injury. The Club would like to wish Ben a quick recovery.

The Club has also appealed to the media not to spread insinuating reports about Cee or any of the club's players. The Club will not hesistate to take action against anybody who disregards this and continues to spread lies about The Club or it's players.

Ben was relieved to see that press release. And with that, he and Rachel packed their bags and set off for Hawaii, to 'continue his recvovery'.

Six months later... (I hope that counts as a season completed. icon_razz.gif)

Ben and Rachel returned from Hawaii, with Ben fully recovered from his injury and raring to go.

He reported for pre-season training as soon as he could, and everything seemed so familiar. It was like a year ago, when he was just a lost boy in London stumbling into the stadium for a trial.

Regardless, he was part of the club now. Wenger saw him, and remarked, "Welcome back Ben! Hope you enjoyed your holiday!"

"Well I certainly have Sir. Thanks very much for giving me the opportunity to recover from my injury." Ben sounded grateful.

"Now the real business starts. If you impress me in the pre-season friendlies, then you might just get to play a big part in the first team this coming season." Wenger said.

"But there will be no favours though. I'll treat you the same as every other player. Fail to impress and you'll be out." Wenger warned.

"Rest assured I won't let you down Sir." Ben sounded confident. He certainly could not wait to get started.

"So, what's been going on since I've been away?" Ben asked

"Well..." Wenger started to explain.

So give me a little time while I work it out. Thanks guys once again for the support and comments. I'll try to figure it out by next week. Cheers.
