[FM13] Hibernian - On The Road To Recovery

Recommended Posts

hibs_logo.gif

General Background

Hibernian were founded in 1875 by Irishmen in the Cowgate area. The name is derived from Hibernia, the Roman name for Ireland. Hibs play in Leith, on the East Coast of Scottish capital city, Edinburgh. Hibs won their first trophy in 1887, winning the Scottish Cup. Mismanagement over the next few years led to the club becoming homeless and it ceased operating during 1891. A reformed club was established and they acquired a lease on a site in late 1892 that was to become known as Easter Road. Hibernian played its first match at Easter Road on 4 February 1893. Despite this interruption, the club today views the period since 1875 as one continued history and therefore counts the honours won between 1875 and 1891, including the 1887 Scottish Cup. The club were admitted to the Scottish Football League in 1893, although they had to win the Second Division twice before being elected into the First Division in 1895.

Hibs had some success after being reformed, winning the 1902 Scottish Cup and their first league championship a year later. After this, however, the club endured a long barren spell. The club lost its placing in the league, and were relegated for the first time in 1931, although they were promoted back to the top division two years later. The notorious Scottish Cup drought began as they reached three cup finals, two in consecutive years, but lost each of them.

Bygone Days, The Days of the Famous Five

Famous_Five.jpg

Hibs' most successful era by far, was in the decade following the end of the Second World War, when it was "among the foremost clubs in Britain". The forward line of Gordon Smith, Bobby Johnstone, Lawrie Reilly, Eddie Turnbull and Willie Ormond, collectively known as the Famous Five, is "regarded as the finest ever seen in Scottish football". The quality of the Famous Five is shown by the fact that all five players scored more than 100 goals for the club, with the north stand at Easter Road now named in their honour.

Of the five, only Ormond cost Hibs a transfer fee, £1200 from Stenhousemuir. Reilly, Johnstone, Smith and Turnbull were all signed from youth or junior leagues. The first time Hibs used all five in the same team was on 21 April 1949, in a friendly match against Nithsdale Wanderers. The forward line remained in place until 1955, when Johnstone was sold to Manchester City. The great forward line, together with players like Bobby Combe and Tommy Younger, largely contributed to the winning of league championships in 1948, 1951 and 1952. The team were perhaps unfortunate not to win more trophies, as they finished second to Rangers in 1953 on goal average, and second to Rangers by a point in 1950.

First British Club In Europe

You may not believe this but it is not Man Utd, not Arsenal, not Chelsea, not Liverpool that hold the honour of being the first British Club In Europe. It is infact Hibs.

Despite only finishing fifth in the Scottish League in 1955, Hibs were invited to participate in the first season of the European Cup, which was not strictly based on league positions at that time. Eighteen clubs who were thought would generate interest across Europe and who also had the floodlights necessary to play games at night, were invited to participate. Floodlights had been used at Easter Road for the first time in a friendly match against Hearts on 18 October 1954 Hibs became the first British club in Europe because the Football League secretary Alan Hardaker persuaded Chelsea, the English champions, not to enter.

Hibs played their first tie against Rot-Weiss Essen, winning 4–0 in the Georg-Melches-Stadion and drawing 1–1 at Easter Road. They defeated Djurgårdens IF to reach the semi-final, but in that tie they were defeated 3–0 on aggregate by Stade Reims, who had the famous France international player Raymond Kopa in their side. Reims lost 4–3 to Real Madrid in the Final.

'The' Legend, 'The' Man, Eddie Turnbull and Turnbull's Tornadoes

13505566.JPG

Hibs frequently participated in the Fairs Cup during the 1960s, famously winning ties against Barcelona and Napoli. However, the club achieved little domestically until former player Eddie Turnbull was persuaded to return to Easter Road as manager in 1971. The team, popularly known as Turnbull's Tornadoes, finished second in the league in 1974 and 1975, and won the League Cup in 1972. The club also won the Drybrough Cup in 1972 and 1973, and recorded a 7–0 win over Edinburgh derby rivals Hearts, at Tynecastle on 1 January 1973.

Performances went into decline after the mid-1970s, as Hibs were replaced by the New Firm of Aberdeen and Dundee United as the main challengers to the Old Firm. Turnbull resigned as manager and Hibs were relegated, for the second time in their history, in 1980. They were immediately promoted back to the Scottish Premier Division in 1981, but the club struggled during the 1980s, failing to qualify for European competition until 1989.

Eddie Turnbull sadly passed away on the 30th April 2010 aged 88. Hibs chairman stated that no man had made a greater contribution to the club and Hibs' last game of that season against Aberdeen was dedicated to him.

HANDS OFF HIBS!!!!!

HANDS-OFF-HIBS-DPPA01.jpg

After mismanagement during the late 1980s, Hibs were on the brink of financial ruin in 1990. Wallace Mercer, the chairman of Hearts, proposed a merger of the two clubs, but the Hibs fans believed that the proposal was more like a hostile takeover. They formed the Hands off Hibs group to campaign for the continued existence of the club. Celebrity Hibs fans, The Proclaimers (Singers of 500 Miles, and Sunshine On Leith) joined this ggroup. This succeeded when a prominent local businessman, Kwik-Fit owner Sir Tom Farmer, acquired a controlling interest in Hibs. The fans were able to persuade Farmer to take control despite the fact that he had no great interest in football. Farmer was persuaded in part by the fact that a relative of his had been involved in the rescue of Hibs from financial ruin in the early 1890s. After the attempted takeover by Mercer, Hibs had a few good years in the early 1990s, winning the 1991 Scottish League Cup Final and finishing in the top five in the league in 1993, 1994 and 1995.

The Rise And Fall Of The Golden Generation

19926416.jpg

Soon after Alex McLeish was appointed as manager in 1998, Hibs were relegated to the First Division, but immediately won promotion back to the SPL in 1999. Hibs enjoyed a good season in 2000–01, as they challenged the Old Firm until Christmas, eventually finishing third in the league. Hibs also reached the Scottish Cup Final for the first time in 22 years, but lost 3–0 to Celtic at Hampden Park. McLeish departed for Rangers in December 2001; team captain Franck Sauzée was appointed as the new manager, despite the fact that he had no previous coaching experience. A disastrous run of form followed, which was dragging Hibs into a relegation battle by the time he was sacked in February 2002. Sauzée had been manager for just 69 days. Kilmarnock manager Bobby Williamson was then hired, but he proved to be unpopular with Hibs supporters. However, a string of exciting young players emerged, including Garry O’Connor, Derek Riordan, Kevin Thomson and Scott Brown. These players featured heavily as Hibs eliminated both halves of the Old Firm to reach the 2004 Scottish League Cup Final, only to lose 2–0 to Livingston. Williamson departed near the end of that season to manage Plymouth Argyle and was replaced by Tony Mowbray. Mowbray instilled a passion into the team, brought through fast, free flowing football and what were the youngsters of Hibernian, became the best Hibs team in years. With the likes of Derek Riordan, Scott Brown, Steven Fletcher, Garry O'Connor, Steven Whittaker, David Murphy and Guillaime Beuzelin in the team Hibs looked like becoming a 3rd force in Scottish Football. They finished 3rd that season and Mowbray was named manager of the year. After an impressive 4th place finish the following season, Mowbray departed to join West Bromwich Albion in October 2006 and was replace by former player John Collins. After an impressive start and winning the league cup a slump in the 2007/08 season saw Collins resign after losing the dressing room. The likes of Brown, Riordan, O'Connor, Thomson, Murphy and Whittaker were sold earing Hibs over £10m in transfer fees. Mixu Paatelainen was appointed the next manager and he also resigned by the end of the 2008/09 season after a frustrating 6th placed finish and the sale of star player Steven Flecther to Burnley. It seemed Hibs were on a slump, the next manager was another ex-player John 'Yogi' Hughes. He started the season very well, he managed to tempt Anthony Stokes and Liam Miller to Easter Road and Hibs were in 2nd place by Christmas time. A downward spiral in 2010 saw a Scottish Cup quarter final defeat to First Division Ross County and surrenderring a 6-2 lead to draw 6-6 with Motherwell saw a 4th place finish for Hibs. After a poor start to the 2010/11 season John Hughes was shown the door. He was replaced by Colin Calderwood, after a very poor season Hibs finished in 10th place. Calderwood began where he left off from last season leaving Hibs in 11th place before he was sacked in November 2011 and Irishman Pat Fenlon was hired. He managed to keep Hibs up by bringing in a raft of loan players from the English league and made the Scottish Cup Final against bitter rivals Hearts. It was an all or nothing game and Hibs bottled it and succumbed to a 5-1 loss. The loan players walked away and Hibs were left humiliated, hurt and in tatters. It was up to Fenlon to turn it around. Can you?

Edits You Should Do For Realism

Sean O'Hanlon

David Love

Adam Mitter

Lewis Horner

Jack Verth

Jamie Doris

have all been released and are no longer with Hibs

Young GK Callum Antell has been loaned to East Fife until January 31st

Ex-Dunfermline GK Sean Murdoch has been signed until January 31st

A new squad was built after the exit of the loan players, of the team that started the final only 5 remain, James McPake was signed, Leigh Griffiths was re-loaned, Jorge Claros player has a loan until January, and Lewis Stevenson and Paul Hanlon still remain.

Goalkeepers

Ben%20Williams_633591525456562500.jpg

Ben Williams - Recently signed from Colchester, more than capable at this level. He should be your first choice keeper for at least your first season. Solid Goalkeeper

Sean Murdoch - Brought in as backup to allow Callum Antell to get some experience, should be used as your No.2. I recommend you loan Antell out beyond January and let him stay until the end of the first season.

Paul 'Bobo' Grant - A born and bred Hibby, a friend of my cousin infact. Should be your 3rd choice keeper but doesn't really have much potential and should only be used as backup.

Youth Prospects - Dougie Horne, 16 and has potential to be alot better than Ben Williams

Defenders

_61276869_mcpake.jpg

Paul-Hanlon-Hibs_2433194.jpg

Tim Clancy - Another one of many new faces at Hibs in the summer. Signed on a bosman from Motherwell. Can be played right across the defence although best at RB. Surprisingly good at long passing and gets a few assists. Solid Supporting FB.

James McPake (First Picture) - Big no nonsense centre back. Signed on loan from Coventry and January and was named the Hibernian TV Player Of The Year. That says it all, played a key role for Hibs last season and has returned on a permanent basis. Wins lots in the air and is not afraid to get stuck in. A tad injury prone though. Great Stopper.

Paul Hanlon (2nd Picture) - A lifelong Hibby, brought into the first team at 17, and at 22 now, he has played 113 games for Hibs, a steady Centre Back. Good enough for the first team with bags of potential. One of your key players in your FM Save. When played with McPake, Central Defender, Cover works a treat.

Ryan McGivern - On Loan for Man City until January although it is easy to extend then is available for a bosman at the end of the season. Another player from Fenlon's revolution. Can be deployed at LB or CB, but is better out wide. Relatively steady defender. Can be played as an attacking or supporting full back. Best option at LB.

Alan Maybury - Solid versatile pro, signed from St Johnstone by Fenlon, can play right across the defence (given CB training for a month or so) and at 33 years old he is the perfect understudy for the whole of the back four.

(Pa Koo-Jab-Ee)

Pa Kujabi - A LB or LM, the less said the better. As a Hibs fan not going to say much as it brings back memories of the cup final where he was sent off and cost us 2 goals. Get Rid!

Callum Booth - A LB who burst onto the scene under Colin Calderwood and showed so much potential, a mixture of injuries and bad results lowered his confidence and he is now on loan to Livingston, can be used as cover when he returns but not the player he was on the previous FMs

Youth Prospects - Scott Smith and Jordon Foster can become steady SPL players

Transfer Targets - You may want to bring in another player for cover, Liam Cooper from Hull is a decent loan acquisition.

Midfielders

0,,10290~11236836,00.png

Paul+Cairney+in+action+for+Hibernian

164236-gary-deegan-hibernian-october-2012.jpg

David Wotherspoon (First Picture) - Came through Hibs youth setup and has played 111 games at 22. Attacking midfielder with lots of skill and also plenty room for growth, best on the right hand side of midfield, but can also play in the centre, behind the striker or even at RB. Will score plenty goals.

Paul Cairney (2nd Picture) - Just signed from First Division Partick Thistle where he scored 15 goals last season from midfield. He is probably best suited to an attacking midfield role, but due to a lack of LMs he can be used there. Reminds me of Pat McGinlay, scored goals, works hard, gets assists. Not the fastest but if used correctly he can play a vital role in your season.

Gary Deegan (3rd Picture - Ball winning Central Midfielder, just signed from Coventry. You'll get alot of hard work from him aswell as chipping in with a few goals, prone to the odd red card and rash tackle but makes up for it in his tackling.

(Tom Tye-Wo)

Tom Taiwo - Ex-Chelsea Midfielder, signed from Carlisle in the summer, a neat and tidy player can be used as a ball winner, deep lying playmaker or box to box midfielder. Not afraid to put a tackle in and he also chips in with the odd goal.

(Hor-Gey Claros)

Jorge Claros - On loan from Honduran outfit Montagua until January, a useful player, very hard to extend his loan beyond January so should be used as backup to Deegan and Taiwo for the 1st half of the season.

(Aye-Van Sprowle)

Ivan Sproule - Fast winger on his 2nd spell at Hibs after leaving for Bristol City for a while. He is bast his best now IRL but will always be regarded highly amongst the Hibs fans for his hat-trick in the 3-0 win away to Rangers and his contribution to the CIS Cup victory in 2007. On FM, he is still very useful, especially if you lose Leigh Griffiths as he bags plenty of goals.

Danny Galbraith - Another winger, rather out of the picture IRL after many injuries. Useful as an impact sub down the left hand side but nothing special. Sell him if you want to raise funds

Lewis Stevenson - Capable of playing LB, LM or CM. Been at Hibs for his whole career, in and out the squad. You have a worker in Lewis. Not the most gifted player in the world, but a guy who will put his body on the line for anything. Useful as backup, but sell in order tp raise funds shpuld you wish to.

Youth Prospects - Jamie Beaton, Andy Black, Sam Stanton and David Paul all have 4.5/5* potential and make brilliant players.

Transfer Targets - Just a few players as backup needed, Smajl Suljovic and James Knowles are ok due to the U21 rule it's an ok idea to pick these to players up

Strikers

Leigh+Griffiths+put+Hibs+ahead

(Lee Griffiths)

Leigh Griffiths (First Picture) - On loan from Wolves, a lifelong die hard Hibby. Try your absolute best to get him until at least the end of the season, sign him at all costs. Will score 20+ goals if kept until the summer. Great finisher, lots of pace, bags of potential. One of the best STs in the SPL. Keep at all costs.

(Owen Doyle)

Eoin Doyle - Signed from Sligo Rovers in January but never got a look in due to Griffiths and Garry O'Connor (2nd spell). A strange one, you may want to edit this, a poacher in real life who will work his arse off for 90 minutes, but seen as a big lump who gets fed balls all game. Will get into double figuires if played all season, but if you can't keep Griffiths it's a wise idea to invest in someone else.

(Chef-Key Koo-Chee)

Shefki Kuqi - Ex-Blackburn and Newcastle. Big Lump up front will win headers but not very mobile, should be used as backup and released at the end of the season.

Ross Caldwell - Very young forward, you should send either him or Danny Handling away on loan and use the other as the 4th choice striker. A decent poacher and advanced forward can make it in the SPL if nurtured correctly.

Danny Handling - Similar to Caldwell but with a higher CA and PA will get a handful of goals in the SPL and has the potential to play at a higher level. Keep a hold of him.

Youth Prospects - Ross Caldwell, Danny Handling, Euan Smith

Transfer Targets - Leigh Griffiths on a permanent deal is a MUST. If not possible, Mikael Forsell or someone like that can be picked up on a free agent.

2012111700001.jpg

4-2-3-1 David Wotherspoon needs to be trained at AML though

2012111700003.jpg

or 4-4-2 this leaves Sproule/Wotherspoon as an impact player but relies more heavily on keeping Griffiths

Great to see some Scottish threads coming up. I too want to take a dip with one of CPL club but not sure who to start with Aberden, Hearts, Hibbs or Motherwell. Inclined towards Motherwell though as they suit my tactics with attacking fullbacks and decent CBs. Any suggestions?

Would steer clear fof Hearts, they have lost all of their best players and IRL sit in 10th at the moment

Motherwell have a decent defence and full backs but attacking players like Jamie Murphy and Chris Humphrey seem to do better on this game

Dundee United appear to be the '2nd force' on this game, they have a solid defence, the likes of Gavin Gunning, Sean Dillon and Keith Watson are all very good players but they also have Johnny Russell, Jon Daly and Gary Mackay-Steven who are all fantastic players so they are probably your best bet

Hibs have a solid enough defence on FM, but to be honest it's not as good as United's Paul Hanlon blossoms into an excellent player and is more than capable of playing in the premier league and if you can keep Ryan McGivern he could probably play high championship/low epl.

Aberdeen, have a very solid defence, Russell Anderson, Mark Reynolds, Ryan Jack and Gary Naysmith are all great players at this level.

I'd recommend Aberdeen or Dundee Utd. But you should obviously choose Hibs :D

Valencia is always my first pick in FM. After i am bored with Valencia i generally try my luck with Hibs. However the last couple of editions i didnt enjoy playing with hibs. Quality of talent and youngsters not as good as it used to be before. I remember i could put up terrific fights in CL and Europa with Hibs. Likes of Fletcher, Brown, Riordan, O Connor used to win matches. No such players in recent editions.

They have a few decent youth players this year, Euan Smith, Andrew Black, Danny Handling and Jamie Beaton are all very good. Is stranger though because irl, Sam Stanton, Ross Caldwell, Alex Harris and Bradley Donaldson are all in and around the first team whereas only Handling is of the 4 on FM. Expect big things from Stanton and Harris especially.

If you think about it though, when we had the likes of Brown, Fletcher etc, we were brilliant. We had a real golden generation that Mowbray and others supplemented with great players. All of these players had a spell in there career at Hibs.

Garry O'Connor

Derek Riordan

Steven Fletcher

Anthony Stokes

Ricardo Vaz Te

Liam Miller

Kevin Thomson

Scott Brown

David Murphy

Steven Whittaker

Gary Caldwell

Rob Jones

Sol Bamba

and I've probably forgotten to mention a few too, we have basically had a total rebuilding job over the summer with 11 new signings it'll be a long time before we're that good again.

Fletcher was the best Hibs player for me. Had the ability to score in crunch matches. Riordan also used to be a match winner with the ability to score from banana shots.

One thing i loved about Hibs is almost in every edition they fought like gladiators against bigger teams in CL and Europa. I dont know whether it was my tactics or its in the DNA of Hibs.

aye that sounds exactly like Hibs, we'll go and beat Celtic then lose 3-0 to some diddy 2nd division team or something

How long does it take to dominate the Scottish League with Hibs. Can you win the title right away? In many previous editions i could right away challenge for the title. And once you start rebuilding your squad, you practically have no competition in SPL. One of the reasons why SPL can be boring

Season 4 - 2nd, Euro Cup Last 16, League Cup Winners, Scottish Cup Winners

My scout has just found a few French regens, complete gems. Think we can win the league this year. We went up on the co-efficient so coming 2nd, I reach the Champions League and I managed to get past Galatasaray and Benfica to get to the Group Stages (Zenit, Chelsea, R. Sociedad). Played 4 won 4 so far in the league. Think this could be the year.

1st season, i came 1st in SPL, won league cup and got put out in scottish cup semi's , 2nd season got to group stages of champions league, barca, shaktar & olympiakos, finished joint 3rd with shaktar after beating barca 3-2, ended up going out and into europa league, got chelsea in first knock out, yet to play still

Looking for a challenge which i can play for 5-6 seasons. Problem with SPL is there is hardly any competition apart from Celtic. After 1-2 seasons you can dominate for years, Europe is the only challenge.

So thinking of making some editorial tweaks and bringing Rangers back to the premier division. Yes unrealistic, but at least they can make the save more challenging

As I have said I am in the 5th season, finished 3rd in my Champions League Group.

In my 4th season, up until March, Easter Time there was a 4 way title battle between Hibs, Rangers, Hearts and Celtic. at 1 point in December only 2 points separated them all. A bizarre run of games which featured all 4 of these teams playing eachother before the split in very quick succession saw Hibs, Hearts and Rangers all take points off eacother as Celtic pulled away and won it comfortably. Also, in the 1st season Celtic beat Dundee Utd to the title on the last day of the season. Celtic needed to win and Dundee Utd to lose to win the league.

Just saying.

Nice thread. I am a Hibs supporter from Norway. Usually have a game with the Hibees each FM. Haven't started one in this version yet, but after reading your thread I am tempted. Remember in FM08 we were taken over by a swiss tycoon. Had megaloads of money in the kitty.

Nice result yesterday. Hope we will get to the cup-final this year as well. Come on Paddy Fenlons green and white army!

Good mate let us know how you get on. I'll post an update as to how I'm doing at the weekend. Maybe even start a story in the story thread. Into my 10th season now.

This is enough of a thread to prompt me into a new save.....

My granddad was a Hibs man and my only real memory of him is him talking about a ridiculous attendance (150,000????!) at Hampden for a Hibs game back in the 40's or 50's.

143,000 in 1948

Good luck mate, and make sure you beat Hearts :D

3-0 down at half time v Falkirk, won 4-3. Stuff of legend. I will never forget that game. If that was on Football Manager, it would've been dismissed as unrealistic.

We have the chance to win the Scottish Cup for the first time in 111 years against Celtic in 6 weeks time.

COME ON THE HIBEES!
