Backroom Staff: what causes them to improve?

Recommended Posts

This is something that I've yet to work out for myself.

Does anyone know exactly what causes a member of your backroom staff to improve?

For example: if a player on your team retires and becomes a coach, his non-playing attributes are obviously not yet fully honed. Under what circumstances do they improve? Is it merely a matter of being employed in the role, and then letting him gain experience over time?

I have no idea how this part of the game works, and thus I don't know what to expect from players who transition to coaching. Can anyone shed some light for me?

I tried searching, but I couldn't find anything relevant. Thanks!

From my few longish term games in FM09 I believe that if you put a coach in charge of atraining regime which emphasises one area over others then over a few seasons he/she will adapt to that role and improve on it (provided he/she is not already a specialist in a different area). I tended to hire Cascarino a lot as he had high determination and man management while being average in most every thing else. Over 5 seasons wit Barca he became a good attacking coach (about 4 stars IIRC) while in 2 1/2 seasons with Fiorentina he became an equally good defensive coach.

Is it possible for staff's job abilities to improve? For example, if I hire a coach with the coaching bar 50% will that naturally increase as he does the job because of the experience of doing it?

That’s his job preference.

Ok, I see, thanks for the fast response. Does that mean that assuming they'll accept the job a '50% preference' coach of higher ability will be better than a '100% preference' coach of lesser ability?

Thanks again.

If they have 75% with Assistant Manager, and only 50% as a Coach, they’ll pretty much only sign on as an Assistant. I’m not 100% on this, but that’s the idea I’ve gotten from it. Once you have them signed in your team though, it’s easier to keep them signed on as a coach.

So, in other words their preference bar never changes? Despite the fact I've played for years I always thought it maybe improved with experience or whatever. Shows how much attention I pay to it. I think I understand what you're meaning though, I have a feeling that it depends how desperate they are for a job how willing they'll be to do a job that's low preference to them. It maybe depends on the disparity between the club rep and staff rep. Anyway, thanks for the info!
