Hardest part about playing as Benfica is keeping the players.  I have won the league 4 years in a row, domestic quadruple once, and domestic teble 3 times.   Also on 90 something match unbeaten in the league.   In champions league,  we have been in the qtrs 3 times and semis once, but I just keep losing everyone.   I retool and go again but its annoying.

How did you manage to keep everyone?

It's actually very easy, mentor everyone so they have a professional or better personality,I think it may(pure speculation here) improve their loyalty.Everytime they ask to leave tell them they can't because they are to influential in the dressingroom. The only time it hasn't worked for me was if the player in question did not have a personality of professional or better.

I'm a Mac user. It's been over a month and my game still makes my computer run hot like its trying to ignite the atmosphere. So I'm going back to FM18. As I've done Ajax to death the last couple of years (despite having not played them until FM18 when I started reading a certain user's tactic threads) it'll be Benfica.

@Ö-zil to the Arsenal! @axehan1 any recommendations on which leagues I simply must have loaded? I've never even setup a game for the Portuguese league so I don't know it recommends many but my computer isn't that powerful, can only handle around 35k players so that's why I'm asking, in case I have to prioritise.

I've found some good regens from Serbia too.

  3. We've finally done it!!

Best feeling I've ever had playing this bloody game, a 0-3 defeat away to Bayern Munich in the 1st knockout round had me thinking "here we go again" but we smashed them 4-0 in the return leg, after that we beat PSG 2-1 in the Quarters,Monaco 6-1 in the semi's and then Man City 2-0 in the Final.

Domestically we are streets ahead of everyone else.

    o9f3TnT.jpg?1

Solid as a rock at the back and the 100 goal barrier smashed, still using control/fluid(still not sure about Overload).

A young, highly professional 1st team hungry for more trophies, meanwhile beneath this team Benfica B are champions and the U19's are Domestic and European Champions. The perfect conveyor belt from youth to 1st team, the only downside being the absolute shower of **** we get called a youth intake(1st season Golden Generation exempted of course) full of half to 2 and a half star potential no hopers. We have a good scouting network though.

Quick update - you join me at the mid-point of the 2023/24 season, having just retained the World Club Championship and preparing for a second-half of the season competing for a hat-trick of Champions Leagues, and the Euro 2024 with Portugal.

    The 4-2-3-1

    gGmg5ay.png

Those of you following my tactical threads over the years will probably have noticed the influence of the Dutch/Ajax model and then the Barcelona model in my tactical preferences, particularly in the use of 4-3-3 with a 1-2 midfield set up based largely on the logic explained here.

For the past couple of seasons, we've enjoyed great success using an Iniesta-Xavi-Busquets inspired 2-1 setup.

    PvhXm57.png

This facilitates very effective buildup play and allows wingbacks to bomb forward, but I've always felt Florentino Luis could play a more advanced role.

Searching for a solution, we've experimented with Dantas in a 6 role with João Felix and Florentino Luis pushing ahead,

    b4RhZ4D.png

As yet, the system has never quite clicked. It's always resulted in excessive attacking responsibility on Florentino Luis or under-utilising João Felix as a box-to-box midfielder.

The 4-2-3-1 gives a number of benefits:

    • Florentino Luis moves into midfield, in a role which suits him.
    • João Felix oscillates between midfield and attack, giving us an extra man in the attacking line.
    • The Dantas - Luis double pivot controls the midfield, recycles possession and frees our wingbacks to move forward.

In many systems, Deeplying Playmaker (Defend) would be a somewhat negative choice of playmaker. However, in the context of an Overload system, Fluid shape, passing Through the Middle and the absence of any individuals on Attack duty, it becomes quite aggressive.

    Vullsm3.png

He's going to sit, holding midfield and orchestrating attacking play, with lots of passing options ahead of him.

    0tfrGIE.png

My personal preference is to play with - at most - one playmaker. This comes from experimenting with the Pep's Barcelona tactic and observing - purely a subjective personal opinion - the team prioritising the more attacking playmaker, altering the way I wanted to play. This means that my Number 10 role is simply Attacking Midfield (Support). The objective is for the Number 10 to act as an all-round attacker, described in this article about the Brazilian 'Ponta de Lança' rather than a specialist playmaker, creating a 4-2-4 shape.

This system again utilises some of the more intricate mentality mechanisms, we have discussed earlier in the thread.

    • Overload mentality & Fluid shape means the team aggressively attacks and defends as a unit.
    • The absence of an individual with Attack duty slightly increases the mentality across the team.
    • Exploit the Middle increases the mentality of Central Defenders and Midfielders on Defend duty.
    • Overlapping Wingbacks increases the mentality of Wingbacks and reduces the mentality of the Inside Forwards.

This results in a few characteristics.

    • The team aren't quite all equal, but they're very close. For those still thinking in 'notches' everyone's within 2 notches of each other.
      • The entire team attacks and defends together and is aggressive and expansive in both
    • The Wingbacks and Attacking Midfielder (Support) have the highest mentalities in the team.

    mG7wwSN.png

    • The Inside forwards are a 'notch' lower.
    • The goalkeeper, central defenders, midfielders and striker are a 'notch' lower again, as the core of the team.

    Vullsm3.png

Shame there's not an easier way to show this within the interface.

This creates the 4-2-4 shape in attack, but more of a 4-5-1 in defence.

    So far, we're flying.

..including a few absolute demolition jobs.

The first team squad all seem to be right at their peak now.

    ZWcrEWA.png

..and we rotate into a 4-3-3 regularly, particularly in the league and domestic cup games.

With some real depth in the squad throughout.

B Team look OK, a couple of regens starting to look like they might challenge to break into the squad.

After the youth intake drought, my U19s have all been brought in from elsewhere.

All in all, we're gearing up nicely for the later stages of the Champions League and Euro 2024. Depending on how this goes down, it could be the natural end of this save or perhaps a new direction. Will see. Although, I'd certainly like to do a few more game analysis before finishing up, time permitting.

If you decide to finish would you put your save up for others to continue?I'd like to have a look at it.

  5. Season 21/22,the Mezalla,Winger combo for me works a treat. For instance when I play Felix(Mezzala) and Trincao(Winger) on the left they are a"classic" partnership,Trincao keeps the width while you have Felix with his natural tendancy to get into the box, meanwhile the right handside (depending on who the opposition is/how strong they are)would have Luis as a more withdrawn Mezzala due to his ppm's allowing Embolo to play as an inverted winger due to his natural tendancy to cut inside off of the wing.

There are knock on effects depending on who plays in what position for example a more withdrawn Mezzala will allow me to turn a wingbacks duty to attack to keep the width,i'm loving it.

    yuuAy7Z.jpg?1

a routine victory in the group stage in Europe.Bale and Ronaldo where hitting from distance.

  6. Still going strong with my Benfica save.

    fZ7H5R4.jpg?1

I have settled on a very strong possessions based tactic that sees us almost strangle the opposition whereby we sit almost entirely on average in the opposition half on a game by game basis.

    3D48rdQ.jpg?1

A very solid 60% possession that also sees us score a very healthy amount of goals.

    Djk54Uo.jpg?1

Almost 3 goals a game spread evenly between the front 3 and the 2 Mezzalas.

Long shot attempts are still an issue when a pass seems the better option.I understand that we are camped in the opposition half 90% of the time but the space always is there for a pass

    b7iCwWO.jpg?1

The last game a routine 4-0 win at home to FC Arouca, exactly what i'm looking for, 65% possession, camped in the opposition half, aggressive closing down and when we win the ball back triangles everywhere.27 shots,16 on target but 10 from outside the box.Maybe i'm being picky,my mezzalas have shoot less often and try risky passes but every now and then they let fly for no reason(is it a mezzala trait??)If a player has a long shot trait then I can't complain if he takes the odd long shot.I'm trying to get some of them to learn traits like refrains from taking long shots and looks for pass rather than score to see if we can "Arsenal" our way and walk the ball into the net:hammer:.

Figured we might need another creative, attacking midfielder

I think this is actually the first time ever I've gone over the £100m barrier for a player. It's happening quite regularly in this save and we've got a couple of options to recoup the cash. Will see if it comes off.

I'll be surprised if he swaps Porto for Benfica,I've tried to get their young keeper Costa(think his name is) and he has absolutely no interest in playing for a big rival.

 I'm really enjoying seeing that you're getting results as well. Funny we've got two different sets of two Joãos. I guess you've got Felix in there somewhere?

Interesting to see the academy played in a different way. You're obviously having success with João Carvalho and earlier in the thread a couple of people talked about Batista, neither of which got too far for me but shows how players can develop under different circumstances.

How did you go with Carvalho up front?

Whilst I like an out-and-out forward in most circumstances, each season it's been increasingly difficult to keep hold of Lautaro Martinez. If that happens, replacing him externally would be beyond impossible given our wage structure. Goncalo Oliveira could undoubtedly step up and do a good job and take on the goalscoring responsibility - particularly given that Jota, João Felix and Umbalo contribute considerably - but I'd be concerned about the general play. There's also nobody really pushing through in that position from the youth setup, but there's midfielders pushing to get in all over the place so a strikerless variant could be an option.

In fact, I've been training both Jota and João to play there but I am still apprehensive.

Very disappointing, he wanted to be the main man and be a "key player", which I wasn't prepared to do so he went to West Brom for £20m.

Not the best piece of business but it got money in the bank which as you know is important when you manage Benfica.

    GApmFAO.jpg?1

    VPPmGU0.jpg?1

The Champions League is my "Holy Grail" two Finals in two years and both were valiant but ultimately disappointing defeats, I almost felt like Benfica's reputation as a lesser reputable club was the deciding factor when you look at some of the "Big" clubs that we dismantled along the way to both finals.

We wont be beaten though,we're stronger every year, eventually we will win it.

    T1WUqNV.jpg?1

Tiago Dantas is the player Benfica will be built around, technically excellent, mentally sound and in 2/3 years he will be able to hold his own against anyone in world football.

His value is a joke, worth just £1.2m when he is just about the best 19 year old in Europe.

My core midfield trio of Florentino Luis(defensive mid) -Tiago Dantas(Dlp/Ap) - and Gedson Fernandes(mez) are an absolute machine.Behind them we have Ruben Dias and Pedro Alvaro at centre back, two fantastic young centre halves who dominate any strike partnership the Portuguese league has to offer.

    LBqKUg9.jpg?1

The vultures have been circling for the past three transfer windows but i'm seeling nobody. Not one player in my 1st team squad is valued above £35m and some of the transfer bids have been ludicrously low.

    XU2RDtX.jpg?1

Very happy with the way we're playing although we could score more.I may push us to attacking/fluid but I don't think we can pull off Oveload just yet.

Raul Jimenez has had three fantastic seasons as my main striker scoring 79 league goals in three seasons but he is 29 now and it's time to think about the future, this coming 4th season he will start as no1 but slowly but surely a new name will emerge.

    37kcoC4.jpg?2

Ze Gomes is the leading candidate, very adept at the Deep Lying Forward role especially with his "comes deep to get the ball",he connects well with my midfield three and opens a ton of space for the two Joao's to exploit.

    MriZNcG.jpg?1

Duk is an exciting prospect, a pure goalscorer who I think can be molded into any type of striker,he might get some Cup game time but will play mostly for the B team while he learns a couple of traits.

The youth squad are developing nicely but a couple of my "golden generation", my first youth intake just will not be tutored by anybody which for me is a real disappointment.I risk losing a couple of potential world beaters if I can't find a suitable tutor.

    O3txosB.jpg?1

Nelson Aleixo, balanced personality and outspoken media-handling(if that means anything) refuses tutoring. If I can't get him tutored then I will develop him the best I can and then move him on for a healthy profit.
